f you are watching a game of baseball at the Plant City Little League field with the Rays team on the field, little six-year-old Zachary Schulte will be there playing his heart out. This young dedicated athlete gives his 110% every time he goes out on the field. He began his fun sports journey in the fall of 2013 and realized he loved baseball. With just two seasons, he has already earned three “game balls.” When asked how he earned those, Schulte replied, “I just played really hard and helped my team.” In Little League, the players usually rotate around to have experience in each position and find the position that fits them. Zachary’s favorite positions are pitcher, shortstop, and catcher. Out of those three, he especially loves being on the pitcher’s mound. When he first started playing baseball, he would shy away from the ball. But with much practice and guidance of his Dad(and coach), he now charges after the ball with no hesitation. He has grown in this sport with the help of his determination to strengthen his skill. He is not the kind of player that just concentrates on his own skill. Zachary cheers on his fellow teammates each time they are up to bat or making a really great play. His great sportsmanship shines through and he plays a huge positive role on his team. In fact, his mother, Shanon Shulte said, “Zachary is a total team player. He always cheers and is happy when one of his teammates does well. He will come home talking about how proud he was of one of his teammates who did something good during the game. He has a big heart.” The skill on the field is not where it all stops. For an athlete to truly be an inspiration, academics should be at the top of the list. Zachary holds his academics to an even higher standard. He works very hard in school and always tries to do his very best. His grades speak for him. Working at above level in most subjects, he definitely sets high goals for himself and works hard to achieve them. With his caring attitude with others, his cheerful spirit, and determination that won’t give up, this young athlete has begun his baseball journey the right way. Congratulations Zachary Schulte for being selected “Athlete of the Month.”
