It’s show time!

Michael Costain, MD of show organisers Lyrical Communications, on the event’s rapid expansion and why this year is set to be its best outing yet

InstallerSHOW now has its own dedicated Kitchens & Bathrooms space –why should retailers and designers attend?

The delivery of kitchens and bathrooms to end users has evolved over recent years with more places to buy products than ever before, giving consumers and kitchen and bathroom installers more choice of where to source. Also, homeowners are becoming more and more price conscious and look to seek out the best possible value. Because of this, installers now play a more important role in the creation of kitchens and bathrooms than ever before, and at times become part of the decision-making process. Manufacturers, retailers and designers can no longer rely on selling directly to consumers 100% of the time, and need to engage more with the installer. With over 20,000 trade professionals visiting InstallerSHOW, we offer a unique, outstanding opportunity for suppliers to reach this audience to create market awareness and build new contacts.

The kitchens element is new this year – why have you introduced it now?

Over the years of InstallerSHOW, we have grown substantially from our roots in plumbing and heating to include more products and services for the building trades. From our research in 2022, many of our visitors suggested we needed to include bathrooms,

as the sector complemented our offer and would appeal to a large percentage of our visitors. We launched Installer Bathrooms in 2023 and it was a great success – I’m pleased to report that this part of the show will grow substantially in 2024. The same has happened with kitchens – our visitors told us what they wanted to see and we like to give them what they want. Also, I think when it comes to the building trades, housebuilders and developers, there is always lots of crossover on projects so it helps them to see more products under one roof. The 2024 InstallerSHOW will offer more than it’s offered before to more visitors from across the UK.

The programme will also feature a splash of celebrity with The Observer’s Jay Rayner talking about ‘Nights out at home’ “

What can retailers and designers learn from the Kitchen of the Future attraction?

The heart of Installer Kitchens will be award-winning designer and author Johnny Grey’s 4Gen kitchen created in collaboration with expert in ageing, Professor Peter Gore. Described as the world’s most intelligent kitchen by Newcastle Helix, and originally installed at the UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing, this prototype will be rebuilt by Installer Kitchens & Bathrooms to deliver an exclusive onsite experience for InstallerSHOW visitors. Johnny’s 4Gen kitchen looks to a future of multigenerational households using the kitchen for a multitude of reasons, not just for cooking food.

Adjacent to this will be a full programme of talks and presentations by leading experts to represent the many aspects of kitchen design and installation. Highlights include detailed consumer research by Unhooked Communications as to ‘What consumers really want in 2024’, ‘Surfaces 101 –an in-depth look at surfaces from natural stone to other modern solid surfaces’, Magnet Kitchens’ head of design

Jen Nash will give her vision of the future of kitchen design, while category expert Adam Thomas will discuss ‘Universal Access – designing kitchens for all’. The programme will also feature a splash of celebrity with The Observer’s Jay Rayner talking about ‘Nights out at home’ while Channel 5’s Mark Millar presents some of his recent building projects.

As Installer Kitchens & Bathrooms gets set to debut at InstallerSHOW 2024, we take a look at the exciting products and innovations that will be taking centre stage on exhibitors’ stands

Last year’s InstallerSHOW succeeded in breaking its own records, with over 14,700 industry professionals flocking to the NEC Birmingham over the three days of the show to engage with more than 450 exhibitors, and take part in the event’s live content programme.

This year, with the addition of Kitchens & Bathrooms in Hall 4, the event looks set to be even bigger and more dynamic, and

organisers Lyrical Communications predict it will bring together 20,000 visitors, all keen to see firsthand what the 600+ exhibitors have to reveal. Product Focus

Lee Appleby, co-owner of G&M Plumbing & Heating, Colchester

As a bathroom retailer, why do you think it’s important to attend InstallerSHOW?

Attending

InstallerSHOW is a must for retail businesses in this sector as the show offers a wide range of existing and new products on display, and gives visitors the chance to interact with the products and discuss them in depth with the suppliers. The show also offers fantastic networking opportunities with suppliers from other areas of the industry.

What did you enjoy most about your visit to the show last year?

My key takeaway from last year’s show was the fact that it gave me the opportunity to network with suppliers I hadn’t previously heard about, and as I was new to the sector then, that was invaluable. As a team, we felt we gained additional knowledge of the products and ranges, and as a result we took new product lines into our store. We also had the opportunity to speak with senior members of our suppliers’ teams, and were able to tell them directly if we had experienced product or service issues.

You’re back again this year – what are you hoping to gain?

We’re attending this year to allow other staff who couldn’t come last year the chance to attend – we hope they will gain product knowledge and make the most of the networking experience. As proud members of the IPG we will be supporting them on their stand to offer advice and hands-on experience of the benefits of supporting independent businesses.

What are your top tips for someone attending InstallerSHOW for the first time?

1 - Allow enough time to visit the stands you’re interested in – this is a big show

2 - Don’t be afraid to ask the suppliers questions – they’re extremely helpful

3 - Take business cards and wear comfy shoes

Dan Martin, installer communications manager at Mira Showers

Tell us about Mira’s plans for InstallerSHOW 2024 –what hero products will you be highlighting? We are incredibly excited for InstallerSHOW and are delighted to be showcasing some of our latest product launches of the last 18 months on the stand. The first is the latest generation of Mira Sport, our most popular electric shower. We work directly with installers to provide a range of versatile and flexible showering solutions that don’t compromise on quality and just like its predecessor when that was originally brought to market, the refreshed Mira Sport is no different. The range comes with a host of patented innovations: Mira Sensi-flo (which protects users against hot water surges), Mira Opti-flo (which optimises shower flow throughout the year) and AirBoost, our patented technology that infuses water with air to amplify the power of the flow by up to 30% without using any more water.

The second product on our stand will be Mira Platinum, which was launched at the end of 2023. Available in single and dual outlets, the Mira Platinum is Mira’s most innovative digital shower to date, offering the end-user a seamless and fully connected experience.

Last but not least, we’ll be bringing Mira Form back to the stand. The only multifit concentric mixer on the market, it is a truly problem-solving shower that allows installers to effortlessly upgrade to a dual outlet – whether fitting a new concentric or upgrading an existing one.

What smart features are making their way into the latest showering products?

We know that homeowners look for ways that will help them lead a more efficient life in all parts of their home, and the bathroom is no exception. Digital mixer showers – and the smart features and technology that come with them – give users easy-to-use tools that offer clear benefits for both and can help them save energy and money along the way through the water management aspects.

They include:

• Built in pre-sets that are designed to limit our impact on the planet, such as our Eco Mode

• Customisable profiles so that every shower user can experience the shower personalised to them

• Compatibility with smart devices, so that users can ask Alexa to warm up their shower or set a schedule in Google Home

• Total control of it all – from precise heat and flow, to pre-sets and max temperatures for family-safe showering

• Tracking of time and volumes that can be monitored over time

What support do you offer retailers? We work with our customers to understand their needs, and ensure they have what they need to talk about our products effectively. As well as POS materials, we have a fantastic sales team that deliver training to staff.

Lewis Neathey, product management at Grohe UK, Lixil, EMENA

Why do you think the trend for concealed installation is so popular?

As bathrooms have become integrated living spaces we’ve seen a shift in elevated bathroom design and the desire for a streamlined look that is in keeping with the rest of a building’s style. Designers and specifiers opt for fittings that provide a sleek finish, while still providing premium functionality.

What are the key mistakes to avoid with behind-the-wall installation?

The bathroom is a high traffic area and failing to invest in quality, high-spec fixtures can quickly become a costly mistake. You want to ensure the product is premium quality from a reputable brand and will not require regular maintenance that will involve breaking tiles and digging into a wall. One consideration is to seek flush-frame systems that provide access to the thermostat, or inner workings of a wall-hung toilet, through the control plate. Also check the product guarantee –does it include parts and labour, and does the manufacturer have a good guarantee on how long parts will be available? Another key consideration is the accessibility for the users, and any future-proofing measures that can be taken at the point of install. If installing a concealed shower, the positioning of the controls will be a key design element as these can be placed separate from the showerhead, but for an enjoyable experience, it’s essential to position them for ease of function.

Tell us about the latest concealed product solutions from Grohe

At InstallerSHOW 2024, we’ll showcase the Grohe Rapido Shower Frame, which provides installers with preassembled components such as mixed water pipes and concealed elements to allow installation in just a few steps. With an installation depth of 80mm, it fits into almost any plasterboard wall. The planning process, including preparing bids and configuration, is accelerated as the entire solution is delivered from a single source. For WCs, our Quiet Mark approved Grohe Rapid SL flush frame provides whisper-quiet functional benefits alongside a sleek design. Grohe’s Whisper technology of the dual-flush cistern works by preventing sound transfer thanks to the decoupled pipes. Elsewhere, the Rapid SL comes equipped with Grohe’s water-saving technology, EcoJoy, which reduces water consumption up to 50%.

7) IMPEY WETROOMS Stand 4D26

In addition to displaying its brand-new Aqua-Dec floor former, Impey will be returning with its interactive wet room training stand. Led by technical expert Shaun Hunt, the team will be available to demonstrate the layers of a wetroom and provide handson product training; offering expert technical guidance and encouraging visitors to ask questions about product specification, installation, and levelaccess best-practice.

8) KBBG Stand 4A23

Neil Wilson, senior marketing manager at Triton Showers

You’re back at InstallerSHOW having exhibited previously –what is it about the show that works for Triton?

Having seen the event scale up and grow year-on-year, InstallerSHOW is a great opportunity for us to engage with a variety of audiences. As one of the UK’s leading shower manufacturers, we are keen to both promote and discover the latest technological innovations and exciting trend-driven products in the industry. We’re excited to continue our support of InstallerSHOW as an exhibitor and sponsor of the elemental lounge.

It sounds like you’re doing things slightly differently – how are you changing things up?

Last year’s launch of ENVi marked a significant milestone for Triton, as the firstto-market concept revealed our continued leadership in driving sustainable action through energy-efficient electric showering. The show was an essential part of our launch strategy, enabling us to showcase our latest product – the first electric shower to balance personalised profiles, settings to encourage behaviour change and an installation solution that contributes to a

sleek bathroom design. This year, however, we will be showcasing Triton’s broader product offering, including dual outlet electric showers and our Omnicare range, which encompasses inclusive and safe showering, alongside ENVi.

What are the key products that Triton will be showcasing at this year’s event?

This year’s key products include the ENVi next generation electric shower, alongside the Omnicare range of inclusive electric care showers, the dual outlet mixer showers and DuElec electric showers. We recognise the need to ensure that there is a showering solution for every individual and aim to offer this through the variety of products in our range.

Are there any other highlights that visitors can expect to see on your stand?

As the market around us evolves and organisations are tasked with increasing their environmental efforts, we are looking forward to sharing the steps we have taken so far on our journey to achieving Net Zero by 2035. A collaborative effort from the industry will be crucial in reducing the nation’s water and energy consumption, and there’s no better place than InstallerSHOW to share our experiences and learn from other key players within the sector.

What are you most looking forward to about this year’s show?

We are excited to meet – and receive invaluable feedback from – the nation’s bathroom installers who are rightfully viewed as trusted advisors by homeowners across the country. By sharing our latest product offerings and ideas with installers, it’s important for us to understand both their thoughts and the anticipated views of the end-user, to ensure future product development is tailored to their demands. Likewise, showcasing our products to key decision-makers across three action-packed days is a great opportunity to network and engage with industry professionals that are used to the ever-changing challenges and requirements of the housing provision and development sector.

What would your top tips be to someone who is attending for the first time, when it comes to getting the most out of their day?

If you’re eager to experience everything on offer at InstallerSHOW 2024, then planning your day is key. Whether you’re keen to engage in networking events and attend live sessions to learn about the latest trends and technology in the market, then I’d recommend earmarking the exhibitors you’d like to visit, alongside the most appealing events, beforehand.

Meet the team

Lecico Bathrooms is looking forward to welcoming you to stand 4F15 at InstallerSHOW 2024 –here are the people who will be there to meet you

Antony Thompson, Managing Director

As MD at Lecico Bathrooms, my role is to provide the tools and resources to enable our team of very experienced people to develop and deliver a long-term strategy for the business.

The cornerstone of our business is our great people. Whether you’re selling, specifying, or fitting bathrooms, our customers want a manufacturer that offers more than just a great deal – they want great products, from people who are great to work with.

The passion and commitment of our team help us deliver our vision. This has made us one of the UK’s favourite bathroom brands. We are trusted by merchants, retailers, specifiers, installers, and homeowners to produce stylish, reliable, and innovative bathroom solutions that offer unbeatable value for money.

I’m very proud that Lecico Bathrooms has become one of the world’s best-loved bathroom brands.

Tom Farrant,

Our solutions are installed in homes, hotels, healthcare, education, leisure, offices, and more. From basins to baths, toilets to taps, we offer a wide choice of products for specifiers including modern and traditional, functional, and fabulous. Whatever type of bathroom or washroom being specified, you’ll discover a smarter range of choices with us. Better still, we offer design advice and specification support including technical data, CAD and BIM files, sustainability data, dedicated proposals, and have a team on hand to assist in the design and specification of bathrooms and washrooms. We have a phrase we use internally about our service: We can, and we will.

Sophie Bishop, Director of Sales

My role is simple – understand our customers and exceed their expectations. The wealth of experience in our team allows us to provide the best levels of service in our industry. We understand the bathroom you’re specifying, installing, or supplying isn’t always just a series of purchases –it can be a journey to realise a vision. We always aim to meet specific requirements – on time, on brief and on budget.

Many brands talk about value – but few deliver value like us. And when we say value, we mean so much more than an attractive price. We mean quality, design, water efficiency, reliability, service, warranty, support… all the things you actually buy when you think you’re just buying a product.

We strive to be the UK’s number one in terms of customer satisfaction – just ask anyone who specifies, installs, or buys from us. And although we grew big, we never stopped attending to every detail, to deliver the best possible products and service to our customers.

Lecico Bathrooms is in a wonderful position in the UK market and that brings opportunity. Recent growth has allowed us to secure a leading position, but we are still agile enough to operate with market-leading levels of service. We are big enough to support large contracts and specifiers, but we have never lost our focus on offering the flexibility that our customers need. We are a family business at heart and that sets us apart.

In addition, our technical innovations and partnerships have seen us launch award-winning and groundbreaking sustainable bathroom solutions that will contribute to tackling climate change and manage our scarce water supply more effectively in the future.

I am very proud of our recent product introductions and excited by the volume of new innovations within our product development roadmap. Our plans are focused on delivering solutions that make our customers’ lives easier, whether that’s an installer, specifier, or re-seller. We’re also highly focused on water saving and sustainability. We’ve a lot more to say about what we can do for our customers. And we’re great listeners, too. We actively seek customer feedback to help refine our product plans. Give us a call or drop us an email anytime. Whatever a bathroom needs, only Lecico Bathrooms offers more value, more satisfaction, more choice.

We’ve watched with interest how InstallerSHOW has developed, particularly in bathrooms, and feel that there is a growth opportunity for kitchens now too. With a push into the kitchen arena planned for this year’s show, we feel that now is a good chance to be part of an emerging sector for what is a growing event.

Why should InstallerSHOW attendees visit the Waterline stand?

Essentially Waterline can offer a one-stop shop – excellent service, products and expertise to know what customers really want from a kitchen and how getting this right can sell properties.

Who are you hoping to reach at the show?

The elemental audience from the show of specifiers and developers aligns with the growth area that we have identified for our business. Having worked with developers for over a decade, we have a keen understanding of the evolving needs of the market, and we have now launched a free design service to enable developers to make the most from our comprehensive product offering.

What will Waterline be showcasing?

This will be the first time in over a decade that Waterline is exhibiting so it will be incredibly exciting to be a part of the InstallerSHOW. We will be partnering with several of our suppliers at the show as well as showcasing the benefits, installer-friendly and design features of our own Lifestyle Kitchens and Crown Imperial brands.

One of our partners that you will find on our stand will be Carysil who will be showcasing sinks and taps as well as a range of worktops with installer-friendly features such as pre-configured cut outs. Haier will also be showcasing how its range of appliances can help a kitchen really stand out from the crowd. Plus, Sensio will demonstrate how lighting can be pre-configured into kitchen cabinetry for ease of installation.

We will also be announcing a big launch at the show, which I can’t say too much about for now – but we can’t wait to hear what our customers have to say!

I’m most looking forward to…

• InstallerSHOW has already announced a great line-up of speakers and events. I will definitely be there for Terry Butcher’s talk and we will have our own speaker slot too so look out for that!

• I can’t wait to walk around the show and see all the other stands InstallerSHOW has been gaining momentum for quite a few years now and always puts on a good event

• We will have an area of our stand dedicated to fitting demonstrations . I’ve been saying for a while now that our products are so simple that even I could fit them – it might be time for me to put my money where my mouth is!

Innovative & Sustainable Shower Panels, Shower Trays and Shower Flooring solutions from Lecico Bathrooms

Repeat Materials are made from recycled PET. This plastic is best known for its use in drinking bottles, billions of which are made and discarded each year.

As the waste is not “polluted” with other materials, it can be recycled into new panels, instead of having to down-cycle it into lower quality products. This way REPEAT Materials® can close the loop, and turn the linear use of construction materials into a circular one.

Central to the kitchens and bathrooms section of InstallerSHOW 2024 will be the Kitchen of the Future attraction, in partnership with BiKBBI – Emma Hedges talks to legendary designer Johnny Grey about his multigenerational 4Gen concept

The inclusion of kitchens in the Installer Kitchens & Bathrooms section marks a significant moment in the event’s development, and opens up the show to a fresh section of the industry. At the heart of the kitchens zone will be the Kitchen of the Future – a unique 4Gen kitchen concept for multigenerational use, which is the result of a collaboration between award-winning designer and author Johnny Grey, and expert in ageing Professor Peter Gore.

The kitchen is designed to be intuitive to use for all ages and abilities, and flexible in the sense that it can be manipulated, for example with the inclusion of rise-and-fall surfaces, to suit varying needs. It’s a space that can adapt to support the user’s body, so that the kitchen can be enjoyed by all, while also being somewhere that encourages people to come together and congregate, in both a casual sense for a quick conversation, or for meal preparation, or for a sit-down meal.

Most kitchens are really only designed for one cook at a time, which – if you think about multigenerational living – is a tragic attitude “

“Most kitchens are really only designed for one cook at a time, which – if you think about multigenerational living – is a tragic attitude,” says Grey. “Often the most enjoyable part of the process is what comes before a meal – it’s got so much magic to it.”

He believes that not enough kitchens have room for stools that can be easily accessed when the user wants to sit to prepare food, or perch for a chat, so he’s designed a stool that slots into the island countertop so it can disappear out of the way completely when not in use and doesn’t become a trip hazard.

“The central island is probably the most charismatic bit of furniture in the entire kitchen for obvious reasons, and it’s got a number of innovative features,” says Grey. The island is thin and easy to move around, while including a shelf that can double as a breakfast bar, a smart ‘cooking anywhere’ induction surface, and a hot tap zone that creates an area to make drinks. For safety,

all appliance power cabling is hidden and embedded so there are no visible electrical leads. “The game changer is the rise-and-fall mechanism,” says Grey. “Once you put that into a kitchen, you’re giving people of different ages and abilities the chance to participate in a number of ways.”

The curved shapes throughout the space not only make it feel softer and more welcoming, they make it safer and more practical. “People in wheelchairs don’t go round rooms in rectangles – they flow round smoothly, so soft geometry works really well,” says Grey. “Visible storage is also key, so the contents of the pantry can easily be seen – people with memory loss forget what they’ve got in their store cupboards, and you need to see things in order to use them regularly”.

Grey is looking forward to participating in a number of talks at the show and is hoping to

do a live ‘walk around’ the display, which will enable him to discuss elements of the design. “What I really like about that idea is that I’ll be able to actually talk about something real while touching it – so not in an intellectual way, but quite a pragmatic way.”

Ultimately, he hopes that the 4Gen kitchen display will provide food for thought for the installers who are playing a more important part in the creation of a kitchen project, as well as for retailers and designers visiting the show too.

“Creating a kitchen that was welcoming for everyone, not just older people but children, friends and home workers was an exciting challenge. It combines beauty and function, with flexible, responsive furniture, and technology which means it behaves in a way that works for the whole family. It’s more than just a kitchen – it’s a living space. I’m thrilled that Installer Kitchens & Bathrooms visitors will have the chance to enjoy it,” says Grey.

In today’s fast-paced world, our schedules are busier than ever. It’s understandable why tradespeople might hesitate when it comes to trade shows. Many factors can sway the decision to attend, from workload to weather. Normally, taking a day out of the schedule to travel across the country for an exhibition ranks low on the priority list for me. However, InstallerSHOW stands out. Our industry needs to support it. Let’s be honest, in the realm of

The Problems

Leaking toilets waste between 215 and 400 litres of clean drinking water on average every day

Between 5 and 8% of toilets in the UK are leaking, mostly dual flush toilets

A principle cause of a leaking toilet is a faulty button operated flush valve

Syphons cannot leak when they fail, however syphons traditionally use lever control which is seen as outdated

The Solutions

> A syphon operated cistern actuated with a push button

> A product that has no joint beneath the waterline

> A product that lifts water up

What consumers want in 2024 and beyond

Whether you’re an installer, retailer or manufacturer visiting this year’s InstallerSHOW, if you want to know about current market trends, as well as how to promote your products and services effectively to consumers, be sure to check out the first talk on the Kitchens of the Future stage with Unhooked Communications MD, Claire Gamble.

With 15 years’ experience working in PR and marketing, Claire runs Unhooked Communications, a PR agency that specialises in PR services for businesses in the construction, property and home sectors. Unhooked works with major brands, including Häfele UK, Jewson, Marshalls, Flooring Superstore and more, to help them build brand awareness, manage their reputations and engage with their target audiences in meaningful ways.

Full of the latest data, information and advice, this session – entitled ‘What consumers really want in 2024’ – will help the audience understand current market opportunities, learn about the buying process and create impactful content and marketing campaigns to appeal to customers and grow their businesses.

Research from Unhooked reveals that 39% of people would like to – or need to – move house, but the current situation with the property market, interest rates and general costs relating to moving means they’ll focus on improving their current home instead. Attendees can expect to learn about what home improvements are planned for the year ahead – with new bathrooms and kitchens featuring highly in the research – as well as what the motives

are for carrying out the work. On top of this, the talk will cover how the current economic climate is affecting buying decisions, with price-conscious consumers looking for both value and quality. Claire will also explore how people feel about sustainability and how this can be factored into marketing approaches, as well as what sort of content resonates with buyers the most when they’re researching businesses and individuals to buy from or work with.

Explaining in more detail, Claire says: “After many businesses benefited from the home improvement boom that we saw during the pandemic, the landscape has been more challenging for many over the last couple of years. But there are still lots of opportunities as consumers continue to find ways to improve their homes.

“At Unhooked, we’ve carried out our own bespoke research, questioning over 2,000 consumers across the UK to get a deeper understanding of what opportunities there are for the industry. We’ve also explored what are the most important considerations for buyers – factors such as recommendations, being able to see products or materials in person and added value services – as well as what channels and platforms consumers look to for information and advice. This session at InstallerSHOW will bring together all of this research and our team’s insights to inform and inspire attendees, empowering them to confidently market to customers and propel their business growth over the next year and beyond.”

Thomas, specialist accessible design consultant and designer at Freedom by Symphony

How should retailers and designers approach an accessible kitchen design?

The main issues that need to be addressed within any kitchen that is to be futureproofed are the kitchen layout, heights, storage, appliances, work surfaces and plug sockets. The number of steps between the cooking appliances and the sink has a huge impact on safety so the placement of the sink, oven and hob should be as close as possible to prevent the need for carrying hot/heavy items from one to the other. The oven should also be installed with a sufficient amount of work surface next to it so that dishes can be taken straight from the oven and placed safely and quickly beside it.

In your experience, what are the key elements that get overlooked?

The main element is often not fully understanding the needs and capabilities of the client. The correct position of storage reduces unnecessary carrying and reaching. Wall cabinets need to be fitted at a height that is accessible with pull-down compartments or shelving. Pull-out larders and base cabinets with drawers are also easier to access while reduced depth cabinets ensure contents are within easy reach and items don’t get pushed into the back.

The best option for ovens is the ‘slideand-hide’ style, where the door pulls open then retracts safely underneath, preventing users from burning themselves on a hot oven door. A heat-resistant pull-out shelf set at the correct height underneath an oven is also essential for wheelchair users.

In terms of hobs, induction is the safest as it’s the pan that heats up rather than the hob and it can also be installed in a flexible-height

work surface. Ensuring that the controls are at the front rather than the side prevents unnecessary reaching over hot pans. Extractors that are activated when the hob is in use are key, as are intelligent appliances that can be controlled via a smartphone or tablet.

How has the sector evolved over the years?

We are seeing a broader understanding and appreciation of inclusive design, with a focus on creating accessible and functional spaces for all members of a family, irrespective of their age or requirements. This is evident through the increasing use of accessible design features in modern kitchens, making them suitable for a wide range of users.

Is there potential for retailers and designers adding inclusive design to the mix?

According to data, there are over 14million disabled people living in the UK. With the purple pound worth £274billion a year (that’s families with at least one disabled person), retailers and designers should be looking at inclusive design as a way to enhance their businesses. The steady trend of multigenerational living is also likely to see a significant uptick due to various societal and economic factors.

What are your top 3 tips to get the most out of visiting InstallerSHOW?

Firstly, make a list of all of the stands you want to visit. Secondly, do the same for the talks you’d like to attend. Otherwise, you might get carried away and miss something you really wanted to see! Lastly, just soak in the atmosphere and keep an open mind when walking round the show – you never know what you might discover just by wandering.

Helen Lord, co-founder & director of Rehome, the UK’s largest KBB marketplace selling pre-owned interiors, ex-display and surplus stock

When it comes to sustainability, how can retailers and installers can make a difference? We believe sustainability can be a challenge for retailers and installers, as it’s not always at the forefront of a consumer’s mind when it comes to home renovations. There is also strong debate across the industry as to whether explaining sustainability information about a product to the consumer is the responsibility of the manufacturers or the retailers. However this debate lands, there are many other initiatives a retailer or installer can undertake to ensure their methods of working are as sustainable as possible. Use of electric vehicles, correct destruction of packaging, plastic reduction and collaborating with sustainability initiatives for re-use, will all help improve a retailer’s sustainability credentials.

Are there some ‘easy wins’ that retailers can introduce to their businesses?

Sustainability is a broad subject and is not just focused on product choice. Running your business sustainably can have the advantage of being very ‘visual’ to your customers, which will send a positive message and show you care as a business. Dealing with waste in the most sustainable way is the most obvious ‘easy win’. Most consumers hate having a skip on the drive, so if products have not reached end of life and can be taken away and re-used, this is a leap forward. Likewise, there are many waste collection models out there, where correct segregation of waste is made easier, and comes with the relevant certifications too. These are well worth exploring. An advisory note here is that legislation is looming for both retailers and installers regarding the correct disposal of waste, so acting sooner rather than later will put you ahead of this.

In what key ways would you like the kitchen industry to evolve?

I n a perfect world, wouldn’t it be great if our industry stopped using environmentally damaging manufacturing techniques and only made products that were as sustainable as possible? Making sustainability a ‘fait accompli’ is the goal, but we all know for this to happen, it will take legislation and time.

What services does Rehome offer retailers and how can it help them achieve their sustainability goals?

We are the UK’s no.1 industry outlet when it comes to selling ex-display and slow-moving stock but we have just launched Rehome+. This is an online gateway for retailers and installers to recommend their customers to sell quality pre-owned interiors that are being replaced. Rehome+ offers an immediate,

sustainability and commercially driven solution for domestic customers that KBB businesses and professionals can ‘private label’ as their own initiative. Once your customer comes to us, they are offered a complete turnkey sales service, which includes dismantle and delivery to its new home, leaving you with an empty room. We see this as a huge step forward in helping our industry to reduce waste and ensure 360 degree sustainability.

What new developments can we expect to see at Rehome next?

We are expanding our e-commerce offering to the wider KBB industry, including appliances, bathrooms, bedrooms etc, retailing end of line, discontinued and reconditioned stock. This expands our customer base to become an alternative site for retailers and installers to offer cost-conscious and sustainability driven consumers an alternative to buying ‘new’.

UK consumer bathroom habits revealed

The Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) has released its latest research, revealing insights into the area of UK adults’ bathroom habits. The study, supported by Professor Ian Walker of the School of Psychology at Swansea University, embarked on a journey to unravel the mysteries behind the bathroom door.

Focusing on daily routines, the research aimed to uncover why we engage in certain practices and the underlying factors that drive our actions, particularly concerning watersaving habits.

Many bathroom habits are deeply rooted in childhood, forming subconscious routines that persist into adulthood. However, installing a new bathroom presents a unique opportunity for behaviour change, disrupting established patterns and paving the way for adopting sustainable practices.

Reflecting on wasteful habits, participants cited deep-seated routines and prioritisation of personal wellbeing as primary drivers,

indicating a reluctance to modify their behaviour despite being aware of the environmental impact.

As the study drew to a close, participants were asked to envision ‘the perfect bathroom’, revealing emerging design trends such as black brassware, botanical accents, and thoughtful lighting arrangements.

The BMA’s research manager, Jane Blakeborough, pictured left, said: “Our research offers insights into the complexities of human behaviour within the private realm of the bathroom.

“By understanding the motivations behind our habits, we can create more sustainable and satisfying spaces that harmonise with our lifestyle needs.”

Key findings from the study include:

Toilet Habits:

• 3 out of every 50 of us don’t wash our hands after a toilet visit at home.

• 1 in 25 of our toilet visits need a little extra help to clear the pan, with men particularly fond of the double flush.

Bath Utilisation:

• Despite the prevalence of baths in 87% of households, nearly a third remain unused.

• Reading a book and catching up with social media are our two favourite bathtime activities.

Water Wastage:

• 3 out of 5 participants admitted to leaving the tap running while washing hands, with 42% doing so while brushing their teeth.

Showering Preferences:

• Women like their showers hot. While most people favour maintaining a consistent shower temperature, the study suggests that 19 out of 50 women opt to increase the temperature during their showers.

Technology in the Bathroom:

• People are turning their backs on technology in the bathroom. Despite the increasing digitalisation of contemporary life, only 13% would like to have more technology in their bathroom environments. Instead, the majority sought to create a tranquil sanctuary without external distractions, focusing on water-saving innovations rather than gadgets.

Designing a kitchen that stands the test of time requires a professional insight that incorporates universal design principles, flexible layouts, sustainable materials, smart storage, cutting-edge technology, and – most importantly – understanding the client.

A flexible layout is vital to accommodate changing needs and preferences over time. Modular cabinetry, movable islands, and adaptable workspaces allow for easy adjustments. In smaller homes, the kitchen often doubles as an office, so incorporating dual-use spaces, like an IT garage or a printer nook, can enhance functionality and keep work equipment out of sight when not in use.

With an eye to the future, choosing durable materials and energy-efficient appliances reduces environmental impact and long-term operating costs. Ensuring that appliance partners are EPS-free and produce longlasting products is crucial (and legally required with certain builds). The goal is to match the lifespan of the appliances with that of the kitchen itself, minimising the need for replacements and promoting sustainability.

Innovative storage solutions are key, and integrating technology into the design enhances functionality and user experience. Smart and hidden appliances, and features like downdraft extraction allied to induction cooking can help create a dream kitchen. Tech should be seamlessly incorporated to free up space and streamline operations, adding value for the client and simplicity for the installer.

In addition, a timeless aesthetic allows the kitchen to adapt to evolving trends without requiring a complete overhaul. For example, painted kitchens can allow the actual wood in the kitchen to be updated as fashions change.

Lastly, modern appliances can offer a

Linda Barker, TV presenter and design expert

TV presenter Linda Barker is one of the UK’s most well-known interior designers, and with her own brand of furniture, fabric, wallpaper and household accessories, she has become a popular designer in her own right. First rising into the public eye in the 1990’s after appearing as one of the lead designers and TV presenters on BBC1’s hit series Changing Rooms, Linda has continued to work in both interior design and television since leaving the show.

In more recent years Linda has hosted a variety of TV and radio shows while continuing to indulge in her personal passion for interior design with shows such as Building the Dream, With A Little Help From My Friends and Under Construction, all for ITV. Linda has also taken part in a number of reality TV shows, most notably I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! and Come Dine With Me, as well as publishing a number of design books.

range of features designed to enhance usability for individuals of all abilities.

Intuitive controls, large jog shuttles, TFT touchscreen interfaces, and haptic feedback improve the user experience.

Adaptive technologies, such as voice control and remote monitoring, make appliances more accessible, but these all need explaining and commissioning with the end client, something installers could monetise!

In my view, the future of kitchen design and appliance technology is exciting. With each generation, innovations offer new possibilities for creating kitchens that are functional, adaptable, and beautiful, and meet the needs of a client not just for today, but for life.

Secure your space for InstallerSHOW 2025

InstallerSHOW returns to the NEC, Birmingham on 24th - 26th June 2025! Prepare to be surprised for an even bigger and better event as we expand the show, once again, to welcome even more exhibitors and visitors.

Space is currently at a premium with many of this year’s brands already pre-booked for the 2025 event. To find out more information about exhibiting, scan the QR code below or reach out to David Ventris-Field on dventris-field@lyricalcomms.com

InstallerSHOW is more than an exhibition, it’s an active partner in promoting sustainability and net zero. We’re in this together.

A trade show survival guide

Veteran trade show visitor and SENSTEC USA MD Mark Conacher gives his top tips on how to get the most out of your visit to InstallerSHOW

Do: Dress to Impress. Rock that trade show runway. This show may be work-related, but you’re not at work, so get your snazziest gear on and turn up feeling like a million dollars. You can dress in something you’re comfortable in but add a little flair. This is a no-silicone zone.

Don’t: Forget to wear comfortable shoes. You will walk far more than you anticipate, and will be on your feet most of the day for multiple days. Don’t wear new shoes. Don’t wear high heels. Stick your cleanest trainers on or something similar. Your feet will thank you. And you’re welcome.

Do: Bring business cards. This is a fantastic arena to network in, and being in a position to exchange contact details easily is vital. You’ve heard the old saying: It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Start knowing. Stick your neck out. Introduce yourself and work that room like a boss.

Don’t: Forget to hydrate. It may sound like stating the obvious, but make sure you carry a (refillable) bottle of water. With so much excitement going on around you, it’s easy to forget the basics and earn yourself a nice dehydration headache. Staying hydrated will keep you in top form.

I’ve always viewed attending trade shows as a bit of a journey into the unknown. It’s an exciting opportunity to immerse yourself in the bustling energy of an industry gathering, and for me, it’s an experience like no other. With InstallerSHOW on the horizon, it’s time to embark on a new adventure, armed with enthusiasm and anticipation.

InstallerSHOW is, without doubt, the top destination in the UK for installers and specifiers of energy, heat, water, and air technologies. And now, for 2024, we have the introduction of the Installer Kitchens & Bathrooms zone, which – if I’m being honest

Do: Engage with exhibitors. As an exhibitor at KBIS in Las Vegas earlier this year, the more people I had to talk to, the better my day was. Ask questions, probe about the benefits, and try the products out. The suppliers will love you for it – that’s why they are there.

Don’t: Hog the booth. Now, while it’s great to engage, be mindful and don’t go to the other extreme. This show will be jam-packed, and the exhibitors will want to answer everyone’s questions.

Do: Attend the talks and demonstrations. For me, this is the best part. Get there early and snag a seat. There’s a wealth of knowledge and expertise that’s shared by industry experts at these talks. It’s an invaluable opportunity to learn from the experiences of others and gain a deeper understanding of your industry.

Don’t: Try to do everything. Plan your visit well but don’t put pressure on yourself to try to do everything. Trade show adventures are meant to be fun – so go forth, mingle, learn, and conquer that InstallerSHOW floor like the true champion you are!

– has sent my anticipation through the roof, and the fitter in me may just have done a little happy dance. True story.

This event will provide industry experts and tradespeople alike (including kitchen and bathroom ones) with an opportunity to explore new product innovations, meet with peers and manufacturers, and gain valuable insights that just might help them stay ahead of the game.

So, as InstallerSHOW 2024 won’t be my first rodeo when it comes to trade shows, here are some of my do’s and don’ts so you can make the most of your time.

Ask questions, probe about the benefits, and try the products out – the suppliers will love you for it
