STATE OF PLAY

with

COFFS HARBOUR MP GURMESH SINGH

Within a few short years, Coffs Harbour will be a bypassed city. Rather than slowly making their way through our CBD, travellers will stay on the M1 and save themselves 10-12 minutes on their journey.

Other towns and cities have greatly benefited from being bypassed. Our southern neighbour Port Macquarie has done extremely well despite being bypassed for decades.

But we cannot sit back and just assume that our city will thrive – it’s something we must work on.

The long-term sustainability of our city depends on the creation of great spaces for tourists and locals to enjoy. Central to that discussion has been the Jetty Foreshores. There is one aspect to the Jetty Foreshores we can all agree on – the current situation must change.

We are unique among coastal cities because rather than seeing opportunity in improving our waterfront, attempts to do so have been heavily resisted.

We need a vision for quality open spaces. The recent redevelopment of the foreshores where the markets are currently held is proof that the community flocks to the improved waterfront, rather than the beaches immediately to the north or south of the precinct where there are abundant and natural green spaces. This is an opportunity to create a vibrant and thriving foreshore precinct that is enhanced and activated for the benefit of the community, while maintaining the cultural and neighbourhood qualities the Coffs Harbour community values. Community benefits must be at the heart of the Jetty Foreshores. The centrepiece will be a new and improved Foreshore Parklands that becomes the green spine connecting the community with Coffs Harbour’s family playground. We owe it to future generations to activate the entire precinct and that’s why restaurants, bars, cafes and tourism activities need to be explored. And yes, residential is only one of the potential uses that the community was asked to provide feedback on – and reject if they choose to. The dusty gravel car park and the former transport depot adjacent to the railway line are currently an unused wasteland. Over the past few weeks, there have

There have been been many discussions many discussions about the future of about the future of the the Jetty Foreshores Jetty Foreshores – – many of them have many of them have been constructive been constructive and and productive. But productive. But disappointingly, some disappointingly, some have not. have not. Some opposing the proposal have resorted to scare tactics rather than sticking to the facts. There is no ‘highrise’ in the draft masterplan. Up to six storeys is only contemplated in the draft masterplan on two sites, with the majority being two to four storeys. Improvements and developments need to be balanced and appropriate for the area, but for too long scare-mongering has overtaken a rational approach and has acted like a handbrake on our future opportunity.

HEALTHCARE LEADERS COME TOGETHER

We’re entering a new era for Allied Health care on the Mid North Coast with the launch of Mid North Coast Allied Health, a multidisciplinary team dedicated to providing seamless care through your health and wellbeing journey.

While Mid North Coast Allied Health may appear to be a new name for local healthcare, it has a long legacy of caring for the community, made possible by the joining of two long established practices and teams. Mid North Coast Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic and Sports & Spinal Physiotherapy have come together, bringing a wealth of experience which combined has improved the health of almost 30,000 individuals across the Mid North Coast community to date. With the team working across eight locations spanning as far north as Woolgoolga and south as Laurieton, exceptional healthcare will be accessible to the entire Mid North Coast community and beyond. The merger means that clients can now be seen in Woolgoolga, Moonee Beach, Toormina and Urunga to the north, and Laurieton, Wauchope and two locations in Port Macquarie. Mid North Coast Allied Health’s services will include the familiar disciplines such as Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology, Massage Therapy, Dietetics, Myotherapy and Occupational Therapy as well as much needed specialised services including Paediatric Physiotherapy, Women’s Pelvic Physiotherapy, Concussion care and headaches, and Lymphoedema management. Through innovation and technology, Mid North Coast Allied Health will also deliver patient care outside of practices, ensuring services are accessible when and where they are most needed, including home visits and Telehealth consultations. At a time when the Mid North Coast region is experiencing significant population growth and the NSW Government has identified a struggle with recruiting and retaining healthcare staff in regional areas, this merger bolsters Mid North Coast Allied Health to continue growing and evolving to meet the ongoing needs of the community. Practice Principals Aaron Hardaker, Micheal Robinson and Robert Eid shared that both practice groups had an unwavering commitment to delivering accessible quality care to support the health and wellbeing of the community. And that commitment inspired them to develop a strategic partnership and merge, so they could do even more, support more patients, with more specialised services through their health and wellbeing journey. Managing Principal Aaron admits he is extremely excited to see the transformation of the MNC Physio signs and shopfronts currently rolling out to join the southern clinics, with a refreshed name and look that will represent an exciting future for Allied Healthcare for existing clients and the wider community. He also hinted at there being more inspiring announcements to come in the near future that will deliver even greater access to high quality healthcare in the region – watch this space!

JAMIE SYME IS THE NEW OWNER OF CROSSFIT SAWTELL. WE HAD A CHAT WITH JAMIE TO FIND OUT MORE...

Why the Coffs Coast?

I hail from Edinburgh, Scotland. Myself and my wife, Claire and our 4 kids were planning to get to these shores a lot earlier but due to the start of the pandemic and lockdowns we found ourselves on a wee remote island on the west coast of Scotland called The Isle of Tiree for the last 2.5 years. We have family living in Sawtell who have just started a family so we wanted to be around. We have always wanted to live the beach lifestyle, our kids go to the local Sawtell Public school and get home in time for us to go to the beach after school! When I tell that to people back home they don’t believe us! We are very fortunate.

Describe how you got started in your business?

My sporting background is in Rugby Union where I played at every level from club to international 7’s and I’ve been lucky to have played around the world. Injury put a stop to playing so it was a natural transition into Strength & Conditioning. I have been working in S&C/CrossFit for the past 21 years. I gained experience again through rugby union where I’ve worked with the likes of Scotland, the All Blacks, Edinburgh, Glasgow and other professional teams throughout the UK and some Super Rugby teams.

And you have a family... How do you juggle it all?

We make it work, like any family it’s never easy but there are loads more opportunities for kids with the climate here. We want them to try as many sports and immerse ourselves in as many clubs as we can. We like to be active and Scotland was great but the weather can be frustrating.

How do you measure success in business?

In my line of work it’s simple – Health. Being stronger, A longer life. Imagine being a granny or grandpa or a parent and being able to keep up with the kids/grandkids. That’s success in my eyes. A lot of gyms just want as many people through the door as they can but if there’s anything I’ve learned it’s to look after the members you have. Hopefully we can achieve a fitter and stronger Sawtell community and we can make a real difference to people’s lives.

A lot of gyms just want as many people through the door as they can but if there’s anything I’ve learned it’s to look after the members you have.

What is the most satisfying aspect of your role?

Meeting people from all walks of life! I started the first CrossFit box in Edinburgh back in 2011 – CrossFit MTS, which I still own and we run 8 classes daily. MTS is coming up for its 12th year of affiliation with CrossFit. During that time I’ve been lucky enough to have collaborated with some of the biggest names in the CrossFit world. Rich Froning, Jason Khalipa and Dmitry Klokov. The amazing thing is they are really ‘good normal people’ despite their fame. Building a community of good/like-minded people that actually care and look out for each other is a wonderful thing. So providing a facility where people can come and feel safe/change/take control of their own lives and put health first while looking out for each other is very satisfying indeed.

Where do you see your business in the future?

Immersed in the community of Sawtell and the surrounding area, helping all ages feel fitter and stronger. To be known as the place where you will be looked after while you achieve your fitness goals and not just a number. It would be great to have a CrossFit/ functional fitness program in the local schools to show kids that hard work is a good thing, and educate them on the benefits of what a healthy lifestyle is.

Most rewarding part of your job?

Doing the right things at the right times for the right people. Helping people achieve their goals. Whether it’s as simple as something like being able to run for 5 min non-stop or being strong enough to be able to get themselves out of a chair. Helping youth realise their potential so they can excel at sports. People achieving things they didn’t think they could.

Helping youth realise their potential so they can excel at sports. People achieving things they didn’t think they could. I I enjoy helping others be better. If I was the enjoy helping fittest strongest athlete at my gym I wouldn’t others be better. be doing my job right as a coach.

What do you enjoy most about the Coffs Coast?

Apart from the beaches, rainforests and the mountains it just has a really good feel about the place. The bairns (Scottish word for kids) are absolutely loving life and seeing them so happy makes our day! The people have been so welcoming to myself and the family! Hopefully I can give something back!
