Anaerobic training, also known as HIIT, is a popular way of getting fast fi tness results. Social Media and marketing have played a huge role in selling these high intensity workout methods, promoting fat loss, improved fi tness and better body composition in a short period of time. This intense energy system training does have some merit and can certainly boost performance and fat loss, no doubt, but without a long-term plan it can result in burnout, injury and weight gain.
Let’s dive a little deeper into some of the negative effects of long term HIIT style training on your health and fat loss goals:
Appetite Control:
The body’s heightened need for energy (calories in) to sustain regular high intensity training can lead to sugar and salty food cravings (aka junk food). Not so optimal if the goal is fat loss.
Stress:
Ever reach for that extra cup of coffee or pre-workout drink to give you the energy to go work out...? Over consumption of caffeine affects our adrenal system. Excess caffeine plus elevated cortisol from frequent high-intensity sessions tires the adrenal system and in turn can deplete or steal from other important hormone production. High cortisol levels can cause the body to hold onto fat storage and retain fl uid, again contradicting the reason for doing high-intensity workouts.
Burnout:
High intensity training can get very addictive (that dopamine rush). Constantly trying to push a little harder, doing more and more sessions or outperforming the last session can lead to overtraining (aka burnout). Along with elevated adrenals and poor nutrition, your quality of sleep can be compromised and therefore your ability to recover is reduced.
Injury:
Under recovery and overtraining may compromise your next session’s performance leading to poor technique and subsequently to injury. Injuries are painful, to say the least. The inability to continue with your training can also infl uence your emotional health.
Personally, I enjoy a period of HIIT style training in my own workout programming and that of my personal training clients. However, if you’ve been training this way for a long period of time and your fat loss journey has stalled or if you can relate to any of the aforementioned conditions, it may be time to invest in a more systematic approach to your health and fi tness goals. Exercising for health and fi tness adds value to your life now, as well as longevity to your life. Not only do you feel better within yourself, have an improved hormonal profi le and restorative sleep, but you also gain a better relationship with food and elevated mental health. Before the new year begins, get a review and reprogram of your exercise regime and start the new year feeling your BEST! Simply pop into Club Lime Toormina or Moonee Beach or give Leanne a call on 0408 011 388.
By the way... the most common side effect to improving your overall health and fi tness, is WEIGHT LOSS.
