THE DIGITAL AGE

No doubt we’re living in a digital age. e pandemic has only fast-tracked that trend. And while many will be quick to dismiss social media and shout its downfalls – it’s incredibly important to be well-informed of the benefi ts for both consumers and business owners (and use them to your advantage).

Let’s look at the stats: in January 2021, Australia had 20.5 million social media users with social media penetration in Australia currently at 80%. According to the 2021 Yellow Social Media report, Australians spend one hour and 46 minutes on social media; roughly one-third of the time spent online, making it the second most popular media activity for Australians after watching television.

Furthermore, 1 in 3 users turn to social media to get information on the brands they’re considering, while 68% of people will read online reviews or blogs to fi nd out what other people think about products or services.

This represents a huge opportunity for both business owners and consumers. For consumers, quick and easy access to information and reviews of their chosen products or services enables them to make informed decisions, without ever stepping foot in the physical business.

For business owners, this means your potential clients are making decisions about your services, based on what they see online. It also gives you a unique (and costeffective) opportunity to connect with your target market on a personal level, grow the integrity of your brand and position yourself as an expert in your fi eld. Nothing will ever replace good old-fashioned communication and service. But if you’re failing to use social media to its full potential, you’re leaving money on the table and robbing your potential clients of knowing just how awesome you are.

How are you using the world’s biggest word-of-mouth recommendation platform? If you’re not happy with the answer to that question, then it’s time to take stock and decide whether you dig in and learn how to use it yourself – or, delegate it to someone who does.

For business owners, this means your potential clients are making decisions about your services, based on what they see online.

STUNNING NEW DISPLAY HOME

Multi-award winning home builder, Perry Homes has unveiled an inspiring display home in the soughta er Moonee Beach Estate.

Established in 1993, Perry Homes has been building throughout the Coffs Harbour area for more than 20 years and is firmly established as a trusted and respected builder in the region.

New Home Consultant, Phillip Hitchins said “unveiling a new display is always an exciting milestone and provides a great opportunity for people to see the quality of homes that we build as well as the latest trends in home design and interior styling.

“And the Aria home design is no exception to that. Providing four bedrooms, two living areas and three bathrooms, what is noteworthy with this design is the dual living potential. The floorplan is designed in such a way that the front living space can easily accommodate a kitchenette and be sectioned off from the rest of the home along with the fourth bedroom and third bathroom. This has certainly spurred people’s interest.

“Our clients want flexibility in their home, they want it to be able to expand and contract to their needs should a family member need to reside with them. They could even use the space to generate some extra income as an Airbnb.” Perry Homes’ new display home showcases the on-trend Hamptons design with its coastal charm.

Ben Rose is just one of those people who seems to fi t an incredible amount into a day. From running his growing landscaping business Shades Of Green, to running a marathon!

JOB ON THE BEN ROSE

Hey Ben, tell us about a typical day on the job?

I’m up early at approximately 3:30am on the computer setting up my staff and contractors, usually working on a quote or two as well.

I arrive at the landscape yard for a 6:30am start.

A day of landscaping involves digging holes, building retaining walls, paving, and using all sorts of machinery.

It’s a pretty physical job.

I usually finish the day back on the computer doing invoices, planning the next day, and back to more quoting.

How did you get into the landscaping business?

My love of the outdoors combined with landscape gardening has led me here.

As a kid I used to mow lawns after school for a bit of extra cash, I suppose that’s how it all started.

With the landscape yard, I was actually looking to hire a shed to store my equipment as I had it everywhere. I ended up going home one day to tell my wife Haylee that I had somewhere to store all my equipment now, but that we had also now taken over a landscape yard! LOL.

So you’re not only on the gardening tools by day, you also run a landscape centre in Raleigh, here on the Coffs Coast. How do you juggle them both?

The juggle is definitely tricky but I love it.

I work on the tools with my two apprentices from Monday to Thursday. And I have a crew at the landscape yard Tuesday to Saturday, consisting of horticulturalists, delivery drivers, a manager, and a few minions too! Haha.

I’m there as well every morning to help open and pick up the tools we need for the

I had a lot of time o running landscape job for that as we raised our beautiful family, but now they are growing day. What would you say would be the best part of the job? up, I have time to They say if you love concentrate back on your job you’ll never my running. It’s my work a day in your time to help clear my life. I honestly love head ready for the day what I do. I get a lot ahead. It helps me of satisfaction seeing focus, and the physical happy, smiling clients fitness definitely helps when we achieve what in my job. was set out to do.

Now the thought of landscaping would tire most people just by the thought of it, but you have also been putting in the extra yards training. What are you training for?

I’m currently training for the Gold Coast marathon at the beginning of July. That’s a 42.2 kilometre run. Not long ago I did an Olympic distance triathlon in Byron Bay. I came 16th out of 52 competitors in my age group. I was pretty happy with that! Most days I get to see a sunrise, I train before work either running or doing CrossFit. I love to do anything I can to push my body to the maximum limits.

Were you always a runner?

Yes, sure was. I used to run at state cross country every year in high school. I had a lot of time off running as we raised our beautiful family, but now they are growing up, I have time to concentrate back on my running.

It’s my time to help clear my head ready for the day ahead. It helps me focus, and the physical fitness definitely helps in my job.

How much training do you have to put into running a marathon?

Training for a marathon requires a lot of training, up to five to six days a week for me.

I go to CrossFit at Sawtell three mornings a week. This is high intensity training including weight and core strength training.

I run 10 to 15 kilometres during the week on a Tuesday or Thursday, plus Parkrun at Urunga on Saturdays which is 5 kilometres

On Sundays I do a long run of 21 or more kilometres.

Rest days are as important as training, letting the body recover is important.

With such a full plate, what’s next for Ben Rose?

Funny that, my wife keeps asking the same question!

I have big plans for the landscape yard in Raleigh. You’ll have to wait and see!

A little family camping holiday is definitely on the cards.

I hope to do the Coffs Harbour Running festival in September, taking part in all three events, five kilometre, 10 kilometre, and a 21 kilometre run.
