ou are never quite prepared for this to happen, and my sisters and I realise now what a pleasure it was to have her in our lives for such a long time. Thank you to the many people who found out about mum and sent me lovely cards, flowers and well wishes … so very much appreciated. My first topic of conversation today is about what I have learnt about organising a funeral and the mistakes I made, which I hope you find informative and useful for the future. Funerals: you have to dig deep! My mother had a pre paid funeral plan which she took out over 8 or 9 years ago after she moved to Port. Unfortunately, she had stipulated a certain Funeral Parlour in Port, and when I made the funeral arrangements, I went with another Parlour – as I was friends with the owner. I rang the Friendly Society to check what monies were available, so I didn’t go over the amount stipulated after adding accumulated interest over the years.

bugger-all in the proceedings. (Though legally

After the funeral, monies were paid out to the various people involved (paper, flowers etc.) but to my amazement, I was over $700 short. To cut a long story short, the Funeral Parlour whose name was on the Society’s papers insisted on a percentage of the money before the rest would be released to the people who did the funeral.

that way. Unique!

Upset enough, I rang this Funeral Parlour and explained I did not know about this, and I certainly couldn’t afford to fork out an extra $700 plus. He explained that because his name was on the ‘contract’, he really was entitled to ALL the monies, but would except the money mentioned above. He said he was once bitten, twice shy! This is why I am writing about this subject, as personally I would not be putting any funeral place down and actually leaving it to the family to sort out when the time arose. Other reasons to think about this is if you move interstate or overseas. I understood the reason this all happened, but as far as PR goes, it upset me ... but most of all that someone can dictate how and when somebody else’s money is released when they did absolutely

correct). Not a nice subject to talk about, but a costly exercise if you don’t know the rules! Sorry Mum! Footnote I know the Carbon Tax is a worry, but what about GST … $600 on my mother’s funeral, and just look at your electricity bill … did someone say many moons ago there will never be GST? Snippets 1. On a more pleasant subject … I am in love with South West Rocks. Spent a weekend there and fell in love with the place. The people are so friendly, the place is still an old fashioned seaside resort with beautiful beaches, the Gaol and many other tourist spots to visit, not to mention the best seafood at The Trial Bay Kiosk. The Sea Breeze Pub had great accommodation for us all, and their food was yum-oh as well. Starting to sound like John Laws ... heaven forbid. Hope they keep it 2. Haven’t finished my story on Poker Machines yet, but I did see on The 7.30 Report that Woolies own more poker machines than any other company in Australia. I find that quite disturbing ... poker machines, petrol, food etc. etc. etc.! like to know about ‘Baked Fruit Filled Bars’… made by Leda Nutrition that are low fat, no added sugar, gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, egg free, no trans fats, vegan and no added preservatives. Sounds awful, don’t they? But I tried them, and they are pretty good. Five bars in a packet (apple, strawberry and triple berry flavours) and sell for about $4 a packet. Available at IGA Gordon Street and other major supermarkets. (Made in Australia.) MARRIAGE IS LIKE A DECK OF CARDS: ALL YOU NEED IS TWO HEARTS AND A DIAMOND, AND MAYBE AFTER A WHILE ALL YOU NEED IS A CLUB AND A SPADE! Keep smiling!
