Kick-Start Career A young Coffs Harbour man is using a school based traineeship to kick-start his career as a Chef. Brendon Scott, 17, is a student at Bishop Druitt College who is also completing a school based traineeship with North Coast Group Training (NCGT). As part of his HSC, Brendon attends North Coast Institute of TAFE once a week and receives on the job training by working an average of one day a week for C.ex Coffs. Brendon says the school-based traineeship has many benefits. He is being paid to work while he obtains his HSC and the credit towards his further qualification.

NCGT manager Alison Vella says there are many trades available for school based traineeships.

Brendon’s aim is to go on to working as a fulltime apprentice chef at the end of the year. “The traineeship has given me a great insight into the trade and practical experience while I study,” Brendon says.

“We already have a large number of students in health, aged care, hospitality and automotive, and we will be expanding our school-based apprenticeships and traineeships into many more industries next year,” Ms Vella says.

“I believe this trade can take me anywhere, including overseas,” he says. C.ex Coffs Head Chef, Greg Watkins, says a school based traineeship is a great scheme for employers and a fantastic opportunity for young people to move into your career of choice. “Brendon is a great worker and an asset to our kitchen team,” Mr Watkins says.

“School-based apprenticeships and traineeships benefit both students and employers and are a great way for young people looking to have the edge over others when getting a job.” Students, parents or businesses interested in the scheme can contact Alison at North Coast Group Training on 6652 4566 or visit the NCGT stand at the Coffs Careers Expo on May 8.
