Amazing Thailand. Thailand is uniquely the only country that has not been colonized in Southeast Asia. Its culture is delicately tuned to the time-honoured Buddhist’s non-confrontational approach to life, and ideals of charity, tolerance and loving-kindness. Thailand is a country of scenic diversity and ancient traditions, of tranquil temples and modern urban excitement. With independent history going back more than seven centuries, it has managed to absorb a variety of cultural influences and blend them into something uniquely and memorably Thai. Whatever your interests you’ll find this a unique land, a place of kaleidoscopic wonders unseen elsewhere.

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Thailand

A Thai woman dressed traditionally

Amazing Thailand I first visited this great country some 30 years ago, and now I work and live here. It has changed significantly over this time with so much to discover, including some of the best beaches in the world. Thailand has something to offer everyone, from the client on a budget to those looking for true indulgence. I truly look forward to helping travellers have an unforgettable time here in the ‘Land of Smiles.’ Gordon Bell Thailand Country Manager

INTRODUCTION

THAILAND

Land of Smiles The only country in Southeast Asia never colonized, Thailand was known for centuries as Siam until 1939 and again between 1945 and 1949. On May 11, 1949, an official proclamation changed the name of the country to ‘Thailand’ or ‘Prathet Thai’ (in Thai language), by which it has since been known. The word ‘Thai’ means ‘Free’, and therefore ‘Thailand’ means ‘Land of the Free.’ Thailand’s distinctive and unparalleled characteristics stem from Indian and Chinese influences (harmoniously blended by Thai eclecticism), rich ethnic diversity, abundant natural and human resources, and over seven hundred years of cherished independence. Thailand is described by travellers as ‘the west exotic country in Asia’, and with good reason. It is coloured by a distinct culture, with a rich and varied heritage, and it poses a remarkable range of scenic beauty. Whatever your interests you’ll find this a unique land, a place of kaleidoscopic Hmong girl playing Pov Pob during Hmong New Year

Culture

wonders unseen elsewhere. You’ll marvel at wondrous sights that give definition to a kingdom with an independent history stretching back more centuries.

Thai culture is incredibly warm and welcoming; Thai people are both open to other people’s religious and political beliefs and very proud of their own culture.

Buddha images in Thailand

Visitors should dress neatly in all religious shrines. They should never enter a temple topless, or in shorts, sleeveless shirts, or other unsuitable attire. People have a deep, traditional reverence for the royal family and any image of royal family members. It is unacceptable to speak ill of the royal family and it is required by both the standards of Thai culture as well as Thai law to stand in honour of the King prior to movie screenings and other public events.

Events & Festivals APRIL

Songkran Festival

Thailand

Songkran is about cleaning, purification, and having a fresh start. Houses are cleaned; Buddha statues are carried through the streets in a procession to be washed with flower-scented water. Elders are honored by respectfully pouring water over their hands. Fortunately, getting wet during Songkran coincides with scortching weather in April - the hottest month.

MAY

Bun Bangfai Rocket Festival

Yasothon

Every year from April to June, the skies over Northeast Thailand fill with the smoke of rockets rising up over the rice fields. This is the annual Bun Bang Fai Festival, where the superstition of firing locally-made bamboo rockets towards the heavens in hopes of beckoning the rain-gods before crop season draws huge crowds of locals and adventurous travelers alike.

SEPTEMBER

Long Boat Racing

Phitsanulok

Phitsanulok Traditional Long Boat Races is held on the Nan River, in front of Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Woramahawihan temple. They are held every September along with various religious rites such as robe-offering ceremony, the changing the robe of the Buddha image Phra Phutthachinnarat, boat decoration contest, and traditional boat races.

NOVEMBER

Loy Krathong Festival

Samut Songkhram

Loy Krathong is Thailand’s very own ‘festival of lights.’ A national event, it is held annually on the evening of the 12th lunar month, usually in the first half of November. Celebration involves various rituals at the Buddhist temples around Phuket, but the most famous and popular part is the launching of a krathong – a floating lantern carrying all of your wishes.

LOCAL CUISINE

Deliciously Thai While Thai food has a reputation for being spicy, the cuisine is actually based on a balance between four different flavours: spicy, sour, sweet, salty, and bitter. One distinctive aspect of Thai food is the use of fresh herbs and spices as well as the inclusion of fermented fish sauce in many dishes. Fresh ingredients on a boat

pork, green beans, soy sauce and a little sugar. The minced, fatty pork is oily and mixes with steamed rice for a fulfilling meal.

Phad Thai

Pad Thai From Cape Town to Khao San Road, this is the default international Thai dish! Dropped in a searing hot wok, fistfuls of small, thin or wide noodles steam alongside crunchy beansprouts, onion and egg. It’s flavour lies in its fish sauce, sugar, chilli powder and ground peanuts.

Tom Yum Goong

Tom Yum Goong The quintessential Thai aroma! A bold, refreshing blend of fragrant lemongrass, chilli, galangal, lime leaves, shallots, lime juice and fish sauce shapes this classic soup, giving it its legendary herbal kick. Succulent fresh prawns and straw mushrooms lend it body. It’s invigorating sour-spicy-hot taste just screams ‘Thailand’!
