BOARD OF DIRECTORS

THE CHAMBER STAFF

COMMITTEE CHAIRS

CHAIR a note from the

It’s been my honor to have a seat on The Chamber’s board of directors since 2014, and I’m especially excited to step up as chair as The Chamber enters its new fiscal year.

Gate City Bank has been a Chamber member for 40 years, and I’ve been fortunate to work for this company almost as long. Our business prides ourselves on being a hometown bank with excellent service that is convenient, friendly and personalized. For our employees, we’re committed to making their lives better by investing in them and their communities. These are things I think most businesses strive for. When a community rallies together, it makes all of us stronger.

Through my decades of leadership in this region, I’ve enjoyed seeing our community – and our chamber – grow and thrive. We’re fortunate to live in a supportive and collaborative community where businesses grow together. One common thread in the fabric of this community is The Chamber. Behind it, Chamber leadership, staff and volunteers are committed to the mission of ensuring the growth and prosperity

of our regional business community and members through leadership in advocacy, education and engagement. Over this past fiscal year, we have seen many successes. Chamber events continue to sell out and programs continue to grow and gain recognition. From the second-ever Young Entrepreneurs Academy class to initiatives from the Leadership group that are making real differences in the community, from winning an Event of the Year award to numerous gains in the public policy arena, there are too many accomplishments to list here. I hope you join us at September’s Annual Meeting to hear more about what we’ve been up to and what is next.

As always, it is busy at The Chamber, and all of these successes are a testament to the team of staff and supporters who are a group of talented men and women working tirelessly on behalf of our 2,100 member businesses and their employees. I want to thank each and every member business, regardless of size or industry. It is organizations like each of yours that make us what we are today.

There is even more to look forward to in our next year ahead. Our events and programs will only keep growing and getting better. We have an exciting strategic initiative in the works that will launch this fall and make our region more competitive. As always, we’ll be dedicated to furthering our advocacy efforts and getting involved in public policy matters. Workforce, the Diversion and a convention center will continue to be among our priorities because of how these affect all of us.

You can count on your chamber to see through these commitments, and I look forward to seeing what else we can accomplish in this year ahead.

On the corner of 8th and Main in Moorhead, there’s a place that has stood the test of time with a sweet story behind it. But it isn’t just any fast food restaurant. The Moorhead Dairy Queen is a treasured gem in our community—and around the nation.

In fact, it’s celebrating its 68th year of business! And much of the store’s success can be credited to Bob and Phyllis Litherland, the original founders who set a standard of hard work and dedication that the current owners have proudly followed over the past 23 years.

This walk-up style Dairy Queen is one of the oldest original stores in the entire Dairy Queen system. Aside from favorite treats such as Bar-B-Que sandwiches and hand-dipped Buster and Dilly Bars, you can also find an outdoor patio under signature red and white umbrellas. They even have “doggie dishes” for that favorite canine in your life!

Current owners Troy and Diane DeLeon are humble, and never made a point to announce their new ownership of the location. Instead, they snuck in under the radar and focused on maintaining all the old practices handed down from the Litherlands—namely offering a quality product at a fair price for families and friends to gather at.

The original franchise contract was signed by the Litherlands on June 14, 1949, and the transfer of ownership to the DeLeons was signed on the very same day 46 years later. It was that fact, coupled with a sermon that Sunday about taking a leap of faith that resonated with Diane, that sealed the deal for them to take on this adventure together all those years ago.

Tradition is extremely important to the couple, and perhaps the only thing higher on the list of priorities is customer service. Everything they do at the Moorhead DQ goes back to offering the best for every single person that walks up. That’s why almost everything on the menu is hand-made and triple checked and why the owners lead by example. Troy often goes to work at 6:30 a.m. to hose down the patio and sidewalks, complete equipment maintenance and begin cooking Bar-B-Que for the day. There’s no doubt that the DeLeons care about their customers and their community from the bottom of their hearts, and their work ethic is second to none. Both Troy and Diane work every single day during the eight-month season. And they also go above and beyond to support their community. The team looks forward to their annual Miracle Treat event each year. It is one of the busiest days of the entire season! They love every opportunity to support Sanford Children’s Hospital, and get involved in numerous other fundraisers and benefits. They are also excited to sponsor WDAY’s Honor Flight this summer, especially since the founder Bob Litherland was a Korean War and World War II veteran.

What’s also impressive is how well they treat their staff, which they kindly refer to as their “co-workers,” displaying more of their humble attitude that makes them so likable. “We pride ourselves on hiring bright and hardworking individuals with smiling personalities,” Diane said. “They are great representatives of our business and the Dairy Queen brand.”

Troy and Diane also fondly recall when they bought the Dairy Queen, the Litherlands insisted that they work in the store before they would sell it to them to ensure they knew what it took to run a successful store. “We will do the same, looking for just the right couple with a strong marriage and a solid work ethic,” Diane said. “The third owners of the Moorhead Dairy Queen will need to love it as much. They have to have a full realization that this is more than just a building with a Dairy Queen sign on the roof. It is about tradition, sense of community, faithful customers, amazing co-workers and relationships built throughout the years.”

While much in the world has changed in the last 68 years, you can count on the Moorhead Dairy Queen to continue serving up smiles for many more with old-fashioned flavor and a big helping of hospitality.

What’s going on with the regional workforce

You’ve probably heard that our region – and the nation – is experiencing a workforce shortage. You may have also heard that there’s a Career Academy in the works that could help address this issue. At our July Eggs & Issues, we looked at both to get an update of the situation and possible solutions.

We were joined by John Richman and Tony Grindberg of North Dakota State College of Science; Denise Jonas, Fargo Public Schools; and Perry Lubbers, Trail King.

These folks are looking at a Next Generation Sector Partnerships model that puts businesses at the center of the discussion.

In North Dakota, the total number of high school graduates has dropped from 12,000 to 7,000 since the mid-80s according to Richman. But, this spring will be the first that we’ll see an increased number of grads since then. At the same time, we’re seeing a rise in tech advancements in all industries and a shortage of people, yet our culture seems to have devalued technicians. “There isn’t one perfect

solution to this, but if we collaborate and create partnerships, we can do better,” he said. “We believe the concept of the career academy is going to help all of us.

Lubbers spoke about his perspective as an employer that is looking for about 50 people with a certain skill set, but is unable to find them. What he’s learned is that it’s best to focus on young people in the tristate area, rather than looking around the nation. “We believe that it’s important to get in front of young people and let them know of the opportunities in our region and our state,” he said. If you look at the statistics today, of those that graduate, it’s not good. We’ve got to figure out how to keep our most valuable resources. We believe that through this CTE center, we can accomplish a lot of that.”

As the career academy now looks to get off the ground, the next critical step is funding. Discussions are starting, and a taskforce is also forming to address the operational piece of the project.

We also had lots of questions from the audience, and we thank all that showed up to discuss this important topic. Stay tuned for even more on this workforce issue.

Drought Crisis – Heavy Impacts to Region’s Top Industry

Wednesday, September 6 | 7:30 to 9 a.m. Courtyard by Marriott

We have seen in the headlines the drought crisis that is impacting farmers and ranchers across the state. Governor Burgum has declared a state of emergency in areas facing these challenges. Agriculture remains a vital backbone for our region’s economy, so what kind of ripple effects can we expect from the drought? How are those farmers and ranchers impacted by this crisis handling it and how do they move forward?

Join us to hear from a panel of experts who are examining these challenges. Dr. Frayne Olson, Agribusiness & Applied Economics at North Dakota State University, Dr. Greg Lardy, assistant vice president of agriculture affairs at NDSU, Daryl Ritchison, interim director of the North Dakota Agricultural Weather Network, and Weston Dvorak, an ag producer, will all share their perspective.

Individuals who live in alignment with their guiding principles are more likely to feel fulfilled and achieve the loftiest of goals. Yet, less than 20% of leaders report having a strong sense of purpose. This session will take you on a mini journey of self-discovery and provide resources to begin leading with intention in all aspects of your life.

MILITARY AFFAIRS

One of The Chamber’s priorities is to support the men and women who serve in our armed forces. We are fortunate to live in a community that is rich in well-trained and professional military outfits including our Army National Guard Units, Naval Reserve squadron and the 119th Wing of the North Dakota Air National Guard, aka the Happy Hooligans. A special moment in time is being marked for the airmen of the Happy Hooligans as they are in the process of completing a successful transition to operating the MQ-9 reaper, a mediumaltitude, long-endurance aircraft capable of precision attack and reconnaissance.

Happy Hooligans: Flying the Fargo Skies Again

This completed transition marks the first time that a Happy Hooligans aircraft has flown over the skies of Fargo since the F-16s left in 2007 and the C-21s left in 2013. It’s truly a remarkable moment. While the flights you see in the skies above you are done for training purposes, it is important to note that our airmen are also supporting missions where their expertise is needed across the world.

The 119th Wing’s mission to provide trained and ready airmen executing world class MQ-9 precision attach and reconnaissance, kinetic and non-kinetic target intelligence production and expeditionary support capabilities is vital for the safety and security of our nation. With over 1,100 personnel, the 119th Wing is actively supporting the mission of national security abroad while standing ready to protect North Dakotans in times of natural disasters.

The Happy Hooligans have a true history of military excellence and their smooth transition to the MQ-9 Reaper aircraft

shows that will be continuing long into the future. We’re proud of the work these airmen have done and will continue to do to protect us at home and abroad. These men and women are members of our community, and their excellence in the skies and airfields carries over into our community.

If you know a young adult in our area who would be a great fit for this organization, you can learn more at GoNDAir.com. And remember, keep your eyes to the sky and feel confident knowing the Happy Hooligans are once again flying the skies above Fargo.

MILITARY AFFAIRS PROGRAM SPONSORS

With area schools back in session, students are quickly filling their schedules with homework and extra-curricular activities, and we are excited to once again offer the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) to middle and high school students in the FMWF community and surrounding region. In YEA!, students can bring their business ideas to life! Starting in October, students learn from local entrepreneurs and business leaders, work with mentors who help them write business plans and pitch their ideas to a panel of investors in hopes of receiving real money as they launch real businesses! Throughout the course of this 30week program, students are also developing 21st century skills that will set them up for professional success for years to come.

When we tell adults about this unique program, they often say, “I wish this was around when I was a kid!” and then jokingly ask if they can join. Although, students have to be in grades 6 through 12, we have a huge need for adults to volunteer. Did you know we had over 50 volunteer as guest speakers, mentors, field trip hosts, mock networkers and investors last year? Even our instructor, Josh Teigen, was a volunteer.

YEA! kicks off next month, so if you are interested in learning more about how you can get involved, please contact Katie Ralston at kralston@fmwfchamber.com or 218.359.0511. Or, if you know a student with big ideas, dedication and a willingness to work hard, please encourage him or her to apply at fmwfchamber.com/YEA

Update on Local YEA! Saunders Scholar

Since winning the local Investor Panel Shark Tank and competing at the National Saunders Scholars Competition, Moorhead High School Senior, Bridget McManamon, has taken the FMWF community by storm. Bridget has launched Herstory, the business she developed in YEA!, and has donated hygiene products to multiple non-profits that are distributing them to women and girls in need. Most recently, Bridget presented at TEDxFargo where she received a standing ovation from an audience of 2,000 people! We at The Chamber are very proud of the work she is doing and are thrilled to have her here for another year, as she is an excellent example of what students can accomplish in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy.

WELCOME CLASS OF 2017-18

Last month, the Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo class of 2017-18 started off their 10-month program by diving right in. After hearing from The Chamber president and CEO and members of the planning committee about what to expect and how to prepare for the coming months, they were able to get an insider’s look at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex.

Next up, Mitch Johnson, CoreLink Administrative Solutions, helped the class find out a little more about their communication styles and, more importantly, how to flex those styles to work with others.

Along with some ice breakers, networking activities and preparing for facilitating Junior Achievement lessons with local students at a future session, the day was full of fun and excitement. While the class has only just begun, we are certain this group of business leaders will make a lasting impact on our community, and we couldn’t be more excited to see what lies ahead.

Let’s meet the new class!

But on the weekends, many of these children struggled with hunger. Designed to meet the needs of hungry children at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends and school vacations, the BackPack Program is tested and proven effective in alleviating childhood hunger. The program is simple: backpacks are filled with food that children take home on weekends or school vacations.

Interested in being part of this program? Join us as we fill backpacks for local children in need! Space is limited to 15 people, so sign up soon! Contact Sam at sgust@fmwfchamber.com for more info or to sign up.
