BEATS 4DAYS GRAN FORTUNE Interview by Kierra Hart

Gran Fortune crept onto the scene last year with his hit single, “Too Popular to get Away With,” and has been taking the industry by storm. Creating a very strong presence, he has already collaborated with a few heavy hitters like; Nas, Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne, R. Kelly, Fabolous, Fat Joe, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Young Jeezy, and T.I., just to name a few. With his upcoming album, “Politically Erect,” preparing to release in October, it is clear that Gran Fortune plans on dominating this industry and very quickly. I had a chance to sit down with the driven lyricist and what I found was very pleasing. Hello Mr. Fortune, after reviewing your career thus far, I see that you have made quite a few leaps in a very short amount of time. When you embarked on whole heartedly pursuing this dream, what were some of the goals you set in place? Honestly, my goal was to primarily be a producer/beat maker. I believed that was my strongest attribute as a musician. But I figured that what better way to showcase the effect of my production than putting out music myself. I said to myself, “I’m a nice enough emcee.” But as I started to write, I’d realized that there was more to my hip hop than spittin’ about how much

I’ve earned or how clever of a emcee I am. So I ultimately want the recognition of a talented producer but make a worthwhile contribution to the hip hop community, so they trust I have something of substance to give as an artist on a whole.

principles we live by, which extends towards our everyday lives, not just our musical careers. So acclaim is a goal that when it happens, which may be sooner than expected, we will embrace it accordingly.

It seems to me that you have accomplished a lot thus far, at this rate how soon do you believe it will take you to reach national or even international acclaim?

What do qualities do you feel you possess that is different from many artists today?

In this world where anything you do can be seen all over the world in an instant with just the click of a button, I think mass recognition could happen any day now. All it takes is the right message and the right push. Me and my team realize this, so we strategized our movements, but at the same time we don’t force anything to go against the basic

I have a very diverse background in musical taste. As a fan of music, not just hip hop, I’ve studied different genres and its affect on their fan bases. I approach hip hop production with that same feeling in my production. So when I produce for me, it would sound as if it’s suited for my rhymes. If I produced for NaS or Chrisette Michelle, it would be suited for their talents. I just don’t make beats for the sake of making beats. My “signature” may

#BEATS4DAYS not be easily recognizable so it keeps me a grade above. The same goes for rhyming. I’m not a one trick pony. I can hang with the best emcees out there. Probably out rap them on their own shit if need be. What drives and motivates you so much, that you have decided to come into the game so hard? My motivation is an attitude of now or never. I’ve toyed with even doing or not doing this rap shit for years. Now that the industry is on its abysmal decline, and audiences are more independent and free thinking about their taste, I think it’s time to give them my music because I know it would be appreciated on a greater level. If not now, the world may never get a chance to hear a Gran Fortune because the industry is in the toilet.

interprets that theme. The sound and feel of it is very different from what’s out there, without sounding too nostalgic or genre defining. But its good hip hop, although, it may not make the listener feel happy at times because it’s too honest or candid. It’s Stark honesty and shock without it being intentionally controversial like what a lot of other rappers do to try to get on. Expect a few features from Sadat X, Lil’ Fame of M.O.P. and Punchline of E.M.C. All production done by me with mixing by DJ Johnny Juice (Public Enemy), all my verses were written by me, all concepts were derived by me, so it delves into my train of thought without it being linear and boring, of course.

Who is your music made for? (What type of audience do you plan to have bumping your music?) It’s for anyone who likes thought provoking content over great production. I can’t say it speaks to a certain group in hip hop because I’ve had “b-boys” love it to trap music fans love it, and of course the opposite of the spectrum. But fans of thought provoking content will really like my music. Its clever enough to keep people interested but never preachy or too demanding, too funny or too serious. Out of all of your collaborations, what is the most memorable and most honorable for you? Honestly, I was honored to be asked to do remixes for any established artist. Just to be given the opportunity I sincerely appreciate and cherish. Hopefully I plan on building more memories before I can definitively answer that question. What can we expect on this upcoming project “Politically Erect?” Politically Erect is somewhat of a concept album, as with my mix tape, Too Popular To Get Away With: Volume 1. The album’s theme is that in a world where people are expected to say and do the right thing to save face, I’m here to say that it’s the world doesn’t really work that way and here are the reasons why! The production also

Lookout for his new mixtape “ Scrappin the Pot”

Neef Buck (born Hanif Muhammad on March 30, 1983 in West Philadelphia) has been a force in the entertainment industry for nearly 20 years. By the age of 16, his undeniable talent would have him become a critical part to the Roc-A- Fella dynasty’s domination at the new millennium - Neef Buck and his childhood friend from age of 12, Young Chris, would form the Grammy Awardnominated rap duo Young Gunz; and Neef would also become part of the collective State Property (founded by fellow Philly-native Beanie Siegel) including Siegel himself, Freeway, Oschino & Sparks, and Peedi Crack amongst others. Roc-A-Fella Records and its influence would assist in crafting the Young Gunners to create music like “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop”, one of many chart-shaking singles from the Young Gunz’ debut album Tough Luv released in 2004; bringing the rap duo to the forefront attention of the streets and clinching the #3 spot on Billboard’s Top 200 list. In 2005, the duo released their second (and final) project under Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam, titled Brothers from Another - clinching the #15 spot in its first week on Billboards charts. By 2008, Young Gunz had formed their independent label, Young Gunz Media/Koch Records; releasing independent projects like Rapid Fire, Get In Where You Fit In, and the Back To Business mixtape Hosted by Don Cannon. Collectively, the duo’s work had garnered much respect from the streets, and musical tutelage under the likes of Jay Z, Dame Dash, Kanye West, Swizz Beatz, Bangladesh, Chad Hamilton, Scott Storch, and countless other talented forces in the music business. Their persistence to furthering growth would soon have the duo begin work on solo projects of their own to build individual brands. Today, Neef’s sonically artistic-genius can be heard from his own record label (Forever Music) where he’s currently gearing to catapult the seventh installment of his streetlegendary mixtape series called Forever Do Me (which includes features from Young Chris, Freeway, Reddi Roc, Peedi Crakk, members of State Property, and other Philly artists). His fan base, spanning across several continents, are dedicated to his life journeys written in between the lines of his skilled production. Neef’s latest performances have entertained hundreds of thousands - including the 7th Annual Roots Festival (Philadelphia), and the Firefly Music Festival (Delaware). His sixth installment of Forever Do Me (and its lead single Jack In The Box) has an unprecedented clinch on social media and doesn’t seem to be settling in the dust anytime soon. Neef’s success is rooted in his belief to “not make music forever, but to make forever music”. Determined, Spiritual and full of Sex Appeal are some of the words that come to mind when describing Model/ Actor Blue Kimble. With his honey dipped smile and killer body it’s no wonder the ATL southern gentleman is steadily making a name for himself within the entertainment industry. I got to chop it up with the former NFL player turned Calvin Klein and Nike Model and it seems like the sky is the limit when we look at how far Blue has come and how much farther his journey in the Entertainment Industry will take him. ATL’s own Blue Kimble grew up in a family of 10 boys with 1 girl cousin and since a young age he was determined

#BLUEKIMBLE from.” Continuing his work with BET in yet another one of the Television Giants Hits “Being Mary Jane” starring the very beautiful & talented actress abrielle nion Blue spoke briefly on what it was like working with the beautiful and talented Gabrielle Union... “Working on set with Gabrielle was a blessing. She is such a sweetheart.” First the game and now working with Hollywood’s Elite?!!. Not bad for someone who’s only been acting for 2 years!! Now he is currently working on a TV series called “The 4th Quarter” based around football Blue is back on the eld tackling grappling in full force and with enough sexy cast for both men and women to go around cast there will be lots of juicy drama so be sure to stay tuned for that one!!

to play in the major leagues. However, an injury would force Blue to pursue other goals in life. This devastating turn of events proved to have an unforeseen silver lining when Blue was able to turn his tragedy to triumph applying the training received on the eld towards other aspects of his life. Blue laments while he does miss playing professional football, he is content with the way life is playing out and will continue to tackle life’s obstacles as they may come.

Acting and modeling offered up yet another opportunity for Blue when he met Legendary Choreographer/ Actor Darrin Henson on the set of “What Love Will Make You Do.” Darrin later brought Blue on board to be in his upcoming tness video which is sponsored by United Healthcare. when discussing the project Blue stated...”Health is Wealth. I just want to help other people... that’s how I feel I can bless them by reaching their tness goals to live a better life. Take care of your health take care of your body you only get one of them. The Gift of sports is that it prepares you for what life may throw at you. No matter what obstacles in our path we must Always Evolve.” A Gorgeous Man of principle who follows his purpose looking to help empower others... That’s what we call lyboy f cial.

There’s no denying Blue sports training left him with an amazing body to show for but more importantly a mentality he could bank on. His acting roots sprouted on the Hit BET series “The Game” placing Blue back in his comfort zone on the football eld. ow this can all be summed up to the irony of life but to Blue, its God opening up a window after a doors been shut. For now it’s all good!! Working on set as an actor has allowed Blue to venture into modeling landing a Nike commercial and an editorial shoot with Calvin Klein. He was thrust into the modeling world and so Blue humbly says “I’m not a Model, I’ve never been a model Until I started acting. I’ve just been blessed to be around amazing people to learn FLYBOY MAGAZINE | 21 | WWW.FLYBOYMAGAZINE.COM

Now You Know Edition:

(Entertainment Tribute) “Talking All That Jazz” Ray Mantilla (Legendary Percussionist) Native Peruvian/Puerto Rican American Biography Ray Mantilla was born in 1934 in the rhythm rich, dancecrazed atmosphere of the South Bronx where Afro-Cuban rhythmic forms transmogrified with jazz harmonies and sensibilities in the streets, the homes and dance halls. By 21, Mantilla was on the bandstand playing conga drums along with contemporaries Eddie Palmieri and Ray Barretto, playing that unique Neouyorican synthesis known as salsa . With flutist Herbie Mann, Ray Mantilla entered the international spotlight in 1960. Then, Max Roach invited him to be part of the classic “Freedom Now Suite” recording. After a stint in Puerto Rico where he honed his skills on the trap set, ay returned to the States to find himself touring nationally and in Europe and Japan with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. For the seven years Ray was with Blakey he occupied his off-hours doing studio work while recording and performing with almost every ma or figure in azz including singers artha itt and Josephine Baker. In 1977, Ray Mantilla became the first orth American Latin musician to play in Cuba since the Cuban Revolution when he appeared there as an essential member of the historic goodwill ensemble led by Dizzy Gillespie. Ray Mantilla’s career has included membership in many legendary Jazz and Latin Jazz ensembles. #FRESHGIRL Career Minded/Skills Driven: Not Just A Booty And Pretty Smile: “Blue/White Collar Jobs Are Becoming Sexier”. Women are career driven now not just trying to be models.. but in fact the same beautiful models are working in all types of male domination jobs. olice, Firefighters, Construction Workers, Boxers, Mechanics, Truck Drivers etc. uoted by ice resident of FlyBoy Magazine and vent Coordinator of rofessional Boxing Association Sarah Fina “ Women have made leaps and bounds since the days of the Womens Liberation Movement. However, in today’s society women are still put in a very compromising position. Many of the models that you see in magazines are entrepreneurs and have learned how to play the game of living in a man’s world. I personally work in the boxing industry and have been through hell and high water when dealing with sexual harassment. There comes a point where you just learn to laugh it off. Men are going to flirt with you if you are pretty. am not saying that sexual harassment should be forgiven, but sometimes you have to have thick skin in order to succeed in a male dominated business. The fact of the matter is that men will be men and it is up to you whether or not you are going to be able to deal with what is thrown at you. The old terminology that you have to “use what you have to get what you want definitely comes into play in many cases. can admit to being overly flirtatious in situations in which I needed to close a deal or book a gig. Giving a man just a glimmer of hope that he might be able to “date” you may be all it takes to get that check cut”. Women are not just taking the backseats playing passengers neither.. They are Driving the cars now running the show and barking the orders... Their your Presidents and Vice Presidents of major cooperations and Owners of their own companies as well..No longer that average girl that work at that 9 to 5 but she quickly becoming the pretty girl you would never think or ever would of thought she would be working side by side with an average Joe like yourself...Things are changing.

By : Nicole Flores

One of the Brilliant quotes Celebrated Artist Leland Sharp shared summing up what he believes encompasses art as a whole. With Leland beginning his road to success as a NYC club promoter 20 years ago, moving on to Hairstyling and Styling for Celebrities such as Eddie Murphy, Kadeem Hardison, Malcolm Jamal Warner and Lorenze Tate, even managing the True School Hip Hop Trio ONXY, it became apparent weaving in and out of our destinies is something life always finds a way of ensuring, however, what is meant for you will always reintroduce itself. And so in speaking with this humbly prolific Celebrity Artist it was understood sometimes there is no one right path. So long as you follow that innate voice what’s meant will always find its way with something similar of the magnetism produced by Leland’s work. Before Leland became a well known NYC promoter he had shown great talent as a novice artist and decided to pursue his degree attending art school in

NY. Unfortunately his time in art school provided a rather lackluster experience. “When I graduated from art and design everybody thought ‘He’s going to be this great artist’... I got very discouraged with art because I felt like art school made me have a lot of restrictions and it kinda inhibited my painting. Every time I tried to paint something I had all these laws and regulations in my mind about perspective and color coordinating and color mixing so really didn t like art when finished school.. I became a self taught musician and started producing records So I was pretty well known in the record business. It wasn’t until I moved to Los Angeles did I start to paint again” Falling in love with California for its laid back atmosphere with no chance for a real snowstorm, Leland first moved to La oya, San iego. e headed up in LA and it was there he met his artistic muse Robin Strayhorn (robinstrayhorn.com), the woman he attributes with reviving the artist in him. Leland expressed his admiration for Robin, describing her as a

LELANDSHARP# Cosby.... My last and final piece of comedy art work is finally done.... @L LA S A is a amazing artist. Thank you man, my house art tells a amazing story because of your talent....I appreciate u man!!!” -Kevin Hart, Actor/Comedian Leland has now moved his refined eye back to fashion and is in negotiations with Timberland to design custom made boots to create individualized hand painted inspired urban fashion. He shared a photo of his next aspiration of which he hand painted the eity Horus using Egyptian Hieroglyphs. Leland executes the concept of his future styling venture using ‘Sharp’ detailing, infusing iridescent paints to pick up the light blended with acrylics in a bold one of a kind fashion. brilliant painter. When he arrived at Robin’s house he was immediately inspired. “I met her in ‘96 and I didn’t know what type artist she was. I thought she was an actress.. I didn’t know she was actually a painter. She invited me to her home to see what she does and her whole entire place had canvasses everywhere, even in her bathroom and then its funny cause I hadn’t painted in years but there was something about the connection walking into her house when I left I went to buy a canvass, an easel and paint something... I wound up spending like $3000.. My truck was so full of canvasses and paints I could barely drive back home... I locked myself in my house for a month and I painted. uring that month made paintings. They were all 3x4’ canvasses. I sold most of them but some I still have like the izzy illespie... Mehki hifer bought one, abrielle nion... they were friends of mine who would come to my house and ask who painted these so when I told them I did they didn’t believe. No one believed that I painted because no one knew I was an artist.”

Leland looks to Norman Rockwell as a great artistic inspiration but says now that he’s been painting and looking in galleries its important to understand artistic ability can be found in anybody. He believes just as in nature there are many expressions of od s work as Art is to the Artist. “The question that frightens me most when I run into people is “What do you do?!” I just create! If its music .. if its art... I make clothes, I do hair, I’m a photographer... I am a creator.”

Since then Leland has reached monumental heights in many genres of the entertainment industry. His ‘Stand Up Comedy Legends’ paintings can be seen during Oprah Winfrey’s one on one with Actor/Comedian Kevin Hart. Kevin Hart has publicly expressed his gratitude and appreciation for Lelands Talent in painting Homage to Comedic greats such as ichard ryor, ddie Murphy, ave Chapelle, Bill www.FLYBOYMAGAZINE.com | 58 | FLYBOY MAGAZINE

FREEDOM: “GIRLS NOW ENJOYING THE SINGLE LIFESTYLE” By Veronica Feliciano To thot, or not to thot? That is the question. Weather the answer is yay or nay, one thing is for certain, more single women feel just as happy and complete exploring their sexuality being single as they do being in a relationship these days. More women are no longer battling with having to pick between the two paradigms of the “virgin” good girl and the “evil” bad girl. Femme fatals are embracing both, without feeling guilty about it either.

Politically Correct or Nah? : Human energy like a lighten bolt consumed, shattered, brought back to life in a BIG city. Feelings crumbled. Working up emotions and sustaining high expectations to stumble at unexpected journey of life’s surprises. Souls crashing harshly like earthquakes on a beautiful sunny day. Jungles of intentions, inhibitions, perceptions lost and found...again...Evolution of life, written like blueprints of a skyscraper. -Ruth Ayon

The 21 century continues to evolve in our presence .The world continues to move away from a black & white existence. More & more of todays society are identifying with their cultural upbringing rather then the color of their skin (ask yourself was this all in his plans?). The face of the Beast is now the financial suitability and otal ind control of the Powers that be(More like a committee and not like a community of people). The world continues to evolve and technology takes over all media outlets, controlled by the Beast that oversees its functions. Just as in the 1960s blockbuster “The Wizard of OZ”. What would you do if you finally reali e that he Beast controllin everything in this world looks just like me and you? Humans Until Animal Ambitions. Anonymous Jones

MYLEZIA RISING R&B STARLET Mylezia (pronounce MyLeezuh) is soon to be a household name as an up and coming R&B sensation. With a sugar coated voice remnant of the Late Great R&B singer Aaliyah, Mylezia always had a love of music, singing in her church which she refers to as more of a huge concert. About 2 years ago she decided to pursue her dream and began writing and recording her own songs a lot of which she draws from personal experiences. Growing up in Twin Oaks, Delaware an only child on her mother’s side, recent High School Graduate Myle-

zia says it’s been a rough road but she made it through to receive her diploma in the end. Mylezia grew up finding it a bit difficult interacting with kids her own age. Often with little peer interaction, her mother had bought her a video camera and in private moments Mylezia found herself in music. “I remember my mom had bought me a video camera and I would make little music videos in my room but I would never let anyone see them... Me thinking I was Beyoncé or something but I’ve always wanted to sing” Mylezia comes from a musical background from both her Mother and Fathers side, mom being a singer and dad a singer and keyboard player, Mylezia was moved www.FLYBOYMAGAZINE.com | 88| FLYBOY MAGAZINE

#WHOSNEXT to sing her Mothers favorite song ‘I love You Lord’ in church one day. “No one knew I sang. My mother told my father and they couldn’t believe it. I used to always say ‘No No, I don’t want to sing’ but my family kept pushing me because they saw something in me. Eventually I would come out and sing more and they were just so excited.”

Eventually word got around that the coy Mylezia had a voice on her which opened up the opportunity for her to enter the studio.

“I used to have a hash tag I used on twitter #IWannaBeTheNextAliciaKeys, cause I Love Love Love Her and IDK how it happened exactly but my mom came downstairs and told me “Guess what... Someone wants to get into the studio with you” from there we were in the studio. I would be writing every night, it was summer time and I remembered staying up until 4 o’clock in the morning just writing different songs off instrumentals from youtube and of course we never used those beats so when we got in the studio we ended up creating a whole new song with the lyrics I wrote. I would tell my producer whether I wanted guitars or piano and we would create a new song.”

of my mom who is my manager, Jaquetta King and we’re partnered with SSD productions who support me throughout.” Mylezia sweet disposition is not to be confused with being unsure. She knows exactly what she wants out of her sound and her team collabs with her to bring about a great flow to her album. Currently in the studio with 6 songs ready for her upcoming album (name to be announced) Mylezia has been working nonstop to get her songs out. She had three songs available to the public as is currently an ASCAP member which helps with her to copywrite all her works.

Mylezia is also apart of Super Duper Fly Missy Elliots Artist Sharaya J’s B.A.N.J.I movement which stands for Be Authentic and Never Jeopardize Individuality.

“I absolutely LOVE Missy and Sharaya and I really agree with this whole movement which is why I’m a part of it. Missy calls me her little sister and she’ll reach out to me on twitter a lot offering words of wisdom. She is very nice.”

Mylezia is deeply rooted in faith and talks about her working with producers with fond memories.

“I loved it, both producers I’ve worked with come from church and when they hear my first songs you can hear the church choir and we just work so well together. I love it. They basically helped me to get out of my shy bubble.”

The former track star and recent grad will be heading to Newman College and says that will not stop her in chasing her dreams furthering her ambitions by starting her own production company, Myleez Productions.

“I’m basically setting out to make my music and continue to create my fan base but we definitely have our followers and its steadily growing. My team consists FLYBOY MAGAZINE|89 | www.FLYBOYMAGAZINE.com

Mylezia is preparing herself for being in the industry and is looking to stay true to who she is as both a person and artist once she becomes a household name. “Everyone talks to me about being in “The industry”... When I was younger I auditioned for the Disney Channel and I made it through to one but I’m kinda glad that never happened because looking at all these stars that grew up in that child atmosphere you see how they were stuck in that bubble for a long time and then go crazy cause they’ve been in that child hood space for such a long time. I don’t really think that’s gonna be me because first of all m too much of a odly person and I’m very humble and my mom is not gonna allow that.. I see how my little sister looks up to me. I want to make sure I inspire others and make sure they never have to second guess about me.” Next stop on the young musicians rise to the top will be Opening for Love and hip Hop Atlanta’s K. Fashion Statement: Dawn Of New Era:

“Fastening Your Belts To A New World of Fashioning”. Just like the beginning of time fashion has been as mysterious as how this world actually came into existence. .You can ask several scientists and philosophers, you will get different stories and different philosophies of how this world, revolved into how,we know it now.. So to, is the fashion world we currently living in.. The Golden Era of Fashion has just begun in our urban communities... The youth is no longer concerned about the names of the designers more then the branding of the names.. Such as the latest brands that dominated our urban stories across the country Gucci, Louie, MCM, Versace, Prada, Hermes, Chanel, Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs,D&G, MK, CK, BB,True Religion, Red Bottoms, Buffalo,Sean John ,Jordan, Nike, Rocawear, etc Fashion in the urban community is now changing to newer brands like Yeezy,LBJ, Melo, KDs, KBs,Born Fly, MDR, SlowBucks,Rich Yung, Rich Gang, MMG, BABES,CAS, Mr. Mason, Flight School(PixxelGem), Repo Brand ,DC list goes on and on.. Depending on where you from theres a brand in that community you may not of heard of that the locals know very well... And I myself could not be more happier. In my growth as a youth, no one in the urban community even knew designers that were based in London, Japan or anywhere else in the world. The only thing that we as a community knew were Crossed Colors, FuBu, Karl Kani, Pelle Pelle and etc. Those were all wonderful brands back in the day. But today we see so many people in the Urban community really trying to change their sense of fashion and style. But in this “New Era” still no one in our community really even knows the names of any designers. They just know the “label”. Not who actually designed the clothes themselves. There are tons of designers. I am going to make it my mission to introduce an array of designers from all backgrounds to you. Which includes beauty, fashion, and accessories. And every once in a while things for the home, from all price points. It is my wish that you let me take you on a tour of fashion. I hope that you will join me. XO, Brandi Owens

MARC JOHN JEFFERIES THE STARZ THE LIMIT FLYBOY MAGAZINE | 97 | www.FLYBOYMAGAZINE.com

10/8/14 12:30 AM

marcjohnj# “It was great! You know I love being on set, Its a learning experience every time we step on set so working with them was just something different because not only were they nice but they wanted to help and they gave so much guidance and mentored me through my career so it was more than just doing a project it was building relationships. These impressive mentorships helped cultivate Marc Johns expansive career which opened up doors to stage and screen. Marc John moved forward to perform on Broadway in a play called ‘Taller than a Dwarf’ Starring Matthew Broderick. We asked Marc John, ‘What are some of the differences between genres and what was your time like on stage vs screen?’

Meet the Newest Member to Join the #TeamFlyboy family and can I just say we are TOO excited to have him joining our movement. With movies under his belt such as ‘Losing Isaiah’ starring Legendary Actress Halle Berry to playing the young Curtis Jackson aka 50 Cent in ‘Get Rich or Die Trying’, Bronx native Marc John Jefferies has been a working actor in a number of Hollywood Blockbusters working with some of Hollywood’s Elite in projects of both stage and screen, moving to produce his own works and becoming an investor in an entrepreneurial venture to bring Crochet Swimsuits to the market. Flyboy magazine sat down with its newest member to talk with Marc John about his stellar career and how he feels now that he’s joined the ranks of some of the Flyest who ever did it. ‘So Marc John you got to work with some amazing people including Halle Berry, Jessica Lange and Comedic Legends Bill Cosby and Eddie Murphy just to name a few. With all that star power how were sets like for you?’

“Well Theatre and Film & TV are a different animal. I prefer Film because in theatre it tends to be a lot more repetitive. Its like you’re playing the same character with the same lines and same outfits like everyday of your life anywhere from 6 months to a year depending on the run of the show. So the demand of consistency is a lot higher and a lot more tedious because the rehearsal itself is continuous... TV and Film is great I love it, like just being on set and being able to develop different characters and understand how different scenes make a character feel different ways. and you get to build bonds with these actors on set which are soon to end on set but can still be continued for years to come so I love the, I guess you could say, the Thrill of being on set because its forever changing and you never know what to expect.” Based on all these experiences Marc John decided he would pay it forward, starting ‘The Marc John Jefferies Acting Academy’ here in the heart of NYC. “One thing about this academy, and I’ll never put down another program or school down, but the difference between our academy is I am an actual working actor... There are other academy by working actors such as Michael Cain who has his own academy and the difference us working actors can provide is the understanding that sometimes techniques don’t work for every body. One thing that both myself and Mr. Cain have said previously is that when a technique doesn’t work, your experience helps you to teach other actors how they can apply or direct certain information to help them.... Its www.FLYBOYMAGAZINE.com | 98| FLYBOY MAGAZINE

001-10-marc john.indd 2

10/8/14 12:30 AM

#marsjohnj like if I’m fat and your skinny we are going to have different routes to getting to our desired bodies.. Like I would have to lose weight first, lift lighter weights to tone up, do more cardio and eat less carbs where adversely you would have to eat more carbs more protein and lift heavier weights so I guess its to say the destination is the same but the route to get there is different” Being an actor all these years in the industry you’ve now set out to produce your own works. Can you tell Flyboy a little bit about that transition from being in front of the camera to behind the scenes? “Well one of the reasons I started producing is there are a lot of actors I know, my students being one of them but friends as well, that I see them trying and I see their persistence and being diligent in their efforts and sometimes they don’t get anywhere cause of the way some projects are made and the demand nowadays.. so me getting into producing was my way of trying to give others an opportunity to get start careers and display their talent and show there can be work as an actor.. So it started as that and basically started to have a real love for it of putting a project together and developing it so now its like a new hobby for me.” Tell me a bit about growing up and your school experience. You had already made a name for yourself at such a young age so what was it like amongst your peers? “Well I actually had a private teacher from the third grade on so you know when I was younger in 1st, 2nd, 3rd grade kids were too young to recognize ‘Oh he was in a movie.. He does this’ but once I started 3rd grade I had a private teacher from then on so mot my schooling was either done on set or in this private schooling facility my parents had built for me in the back of my house. When I was in the 10th grade we started a learning program online and my tutor she taught me from their curriculum so when

I graduated high school I flew out to Pennsylvania to graduate with other students from all over who were a part of it so it was dope!!” So let’s talk about when you were in ‘Get Rich or Die Trying”’ which is 50 Cent’s movie where you played the young Curtis Jackson. How did you land that role? “I just went and auditioned! I got the call to meet with the director Tim Sheridan and when I went in to do our auditions he had his assistant pull out his camera from home, he was from Ireland and had just flew in so his assistant used his personal camera and started recording me aside from the casting directors camera and he said ‘Marc John, I want you to pretend you just seen a man walk through the door who looks like Rick James” So I’m like, ‘Walk out the room’ and he’s like ‘yea walk out and I’ll follow you.’ So he follows me with the camera into the audition area where all the kids who were auditioning for the part were and my dad is sitting there like ‘how did it go’ and I’m like ‘Dad I’m still auditioning” the director was following me so when it was done he said ‘That’s great’ then turned to the others guys in the audition area and said ‘Alright guys, thank you for coming out but we’ve just found our little 50. The role has been cast ya’ll can leave.’ He congratulated me but the crazy thing is after I left I hadn’t heard anything from them for like two and a half months till one day I get a call and they’re like “Marc John you leave in 3 days going to Toronto, Canada where you’re going to be spending the month out there with 50 before the movie and we start filming after that for 4 months.’ With this jet setter way of life what way do you decompress? What do you do in your free time? “Basketball... playing a lot of Basketball, MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), I love to cook I love to eat, I crochet... I love going out going to restaurants.....” You Crochet?!! How did that come about??!!!

marcjohnj# “Yea! My teacher on the set of the Haunted Mansion was into crocheting... I had a Basketball court outside near the make up trailer but on rainy days in between schooling and being on set there was really nothing for me to do so she was like you need to find another hobby.. ‘How about you let me teach you how to crochet?’ and ever since then I’ve been crocheting.

girls) will be in attendance for another epic night of all around Flyness. With all of the esteem held by Marc John you already know both he and Flyboy will be setting it off in a major way. Make sure you STAY LOCKED with the future of Urban Life & Style publications, #TeamFlyboy.

I asked Marc John if he had made a special crochet piece for anyone and considering his strong connection with his Family and Genuine Vibe his answer did not surprise.... “My grandmother was in the hospital dying and said she always wanted a pink and grey scarf so I crochet a pink and gray scarf for her. She passed away before I was able to finish making it but after the funeral arrangements were made I finished it up and they actually buried her with it.. That was the last piece I ever made anyone in like a year.” Probably the most endearing thing I’ve heard... Marc has now teamed up with his recording artist Queenie Couture investing in her line designing Custom Crochet bathing suits which he is now learning to make as well, building as an entrepreneur and designer you need to Stay Tuned for this up and coming swim wear line. Who knows maybe Marc and Queenie’s Swimsuit venture will be featured in a future Flyboy Mag editorial shoot with our Flyboy Models (wink wink) That being said I moved on to congratulate Marc on officially being a part of the Flyboy Magazine team and asked how he came to be a part of our growing family... “I actually met the owner of Flyboy at an event and we was just chillin’ and kickin’ it.. he gave me an article and I looked through it and was like ‘Oh Alright this is dope, definitely!!’ So we text at a later date arranged a photoshoot with ‘Ride With Me’ TV host Jai Ortiz, now we’ve interviewed and the rest is history!” Marc John will be working with the team and will be IN THE BUILDING on July 18th as Flyboy Mag hosts R&B singer K Michele and Mack Wilds at Amazura Night Club in Queens NY in association with Hood Royalty Management.
