HELPFUL

HINTS W

e are starting our 15th year at The Running Center and over the years many of the same issues come up regarding running or walking problems. I have discussed some of these problems in other articles but feel they should be revisited along with some hints about other foot problems.

eliminate the discomfort. There are heelcushions that will provide some comfort for sore heels. There is a sock you can wear when sleeping to help with sore heels when you get up in the morning. If you have a sore knee or IT band there are straps that might help you recover or ease the discomfort.

First of all, you must be fitted properly for your shoes. Most people wear shoes that are too short because feet get longer and flatter as you age. Your feet will get any where from a ½ size to a 1 ½ sizes bigger when you exercise. You must also be aware of the width of a shoe and make sure you don’t feel any excess pressure around the ball of your foot. If you are on your feet all day at work your feet will swell up just like you were running. That means you need to have a thumb nail or about an inch from your longest toe to the end of the shoe and you should feel like you could “play a piano with your toes”. The feeling of freedom in the shoe will allow you to run or walk with less discomfort. One must also consider the depth of the shoe because if the shoe bothers your ankle bone when trying it on, that feeling will get worse. As you wear shoes they start to customize themselves to your foot, become a bit more flexible and your foot sinks a little into the shoe.

Inserts can be useful for providing additional support or cushioning. If you tend to roll in, try an insert that has a stronger medial post or feels a little stiffer under your arch. If you are running on concrete most of the time, try a cushioned insert and it will help your body absorb more shock. Concrete is about 10 times harder than the asphalt so give yourself a little more cushioning if you are on this surface most of the time. If you have access to a pool (not heated) when you get through running or walking put your legs, at least from your knees down , in the pool for 5 minutes. You will find this helps with reducing soreness. Roll a tennis ball on the bottom of your foot and this will help minor soreness on the fascia of your foot. If you can walk or run through minor discomfort you should do so because the body will recover. If a discomfort gets worse as you exercise you need to stop and look into the problem. If discomfort persists more than a week or so you need to see a medical professional to see the exact cause so you don’t injure yourself further.

Over the counter items can be useful to care for minor problems with your feet. If you have a sore Achilles tendon you might try putting a thin wedge underneath the heel of the insert, this will shorten the extension of your Achilles tendon and provide some relief. If the ball of your foot seems to be sore, there are metatarsal pads which can be placed just behind your metatarsal arch which may

Hopefully, this info helps and keeps you exercising in a pain free manner.

Over-The-Counter Orthotics and Foot Supports…Are They Worth Considering? By Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, C.Ped.

Merriam Webster defines “Orthotic” as “a support or brace for weak or ineffective joints or muscles”.

Proper and properly made footwear is our best protection from the extreme forces that our feet have to contend with when running. But, what we are asking our shoes to do with a 3-dimensional foot, on, essentially, a 2-dimensional flat surface is usually more than they can handle on their own. Although a shoe has some contour underfoot, it is usually not enough to do an optimal job. While a shoe can offer excellent bracing around the foot and guidance and shock absorption throughout ground contact, foot orthotics shine as the foot’s foundation and base of support, enabling it to react and perform in a more optimal position, without excess and unwanted movement. Eliminating excess movement can reduce energy use and effort that may lead to compromised performance, fatigue and ultimately, overuse injuries. Considering that virtually every professional athlete wears some type of secondary foot-aid device, its usefulness is worth discussion. These high-level athletes depend on their feet for their livelihood. Injury prevention as well as performance enhancement enable these professionals to get the most out of their careers. Granted, most have custom-made orthotics and are adjusted multiple times in order to get that “perfect fit”. Interestingly, recent studies show that a good over-the-counter device works better and more often, right out of the box, than a custom device that cannot be adjusted. These published studies were done with both athletes and military personnel. I might also add that there are always varied results depending on the proficiency of the practitioner and their source of manufacture. When choosing a custom device, ask if adjustments can be made if needed. In my opinion, almost everyone can benefit from some type of replacement insert or orthotic. Individuals with faulty biomechanics will benefit from the added support and structure. On the other hand, efficient individuals can benefit by adding structure to delay and possibly eliminate the inevitable tissue and structural breakdown within their feet. This structural breakdown is the reason for our feet “growing” an average of 2 ½ sizes during our adult life. Yes, wearing foot supports may just help keep our feet from growing old. Because reasons for wearing foot orthotics are never ending, I’m just going to list some of the advantages for their use, though each really deserves its own discussion. Indications for foot support and orthotic use may include, but are not limited to: performance enhancement; injury prevention; maintaining the structural integrity of the foot; shock absorption; alleviating shearing forces which cause blisters, calluses and corns; improve the structural position of the foot; helping eliminate structural and tissue pain throughout the whole kinetic chain from the foot all the way to the neck (a huge array of issues); improving posture; improving stability; providing more comfort; less strain; less fatigue; less plantar pressure; better efficiency; less overuse; and actually increase the useful life of footwear. The culmination of the above, and more, enables the runner to run better and longer with less pain and providing less excuses for becoming a couch potato. There are many devices that can help to more properly support the foot in shoes. Some that I feel, would be the first to consider are made by Spenco, Downunders and Superfeet. I believe these companies have made the best efforts to more naturally address the performance needs of the individual as well as the structural needs of the compromised foot. Spenco makes a wide array of foot care devices from metatarsal pads, heel pads, heel cups, arch support devices to a new full-length orthotic device called Spenco Total Support. Known for their superior, long-lasting cushioning materials, Spenco is first to combine such a cushioned product with an exceptionally deep heel cup, as well as varied features for excellent heel support, balance, natural arch support and mid-foot protection and support. Spenco Total Support can be worn right out of the box and will mold to the foot in a couple of days or so. This product is an excellent choice for individuals wanting or needing extra control, as well as offering superior cushioning underfoot for heel and forefoot pain and pressure issues. Total Supports are now offered in a Max version for those needing the most support possible, including heavier individuals, as well as a Thin version which was designed for minimal shoes and those with less volume such as casual and dress. Between the three, an individual can get about a custom a fit as possible from an over-the-counter device. Downunders is the lightest of the bunch, and first to address heel control as primary to supporting the foot. If the calcaneus is supported in its neutral, vertical position, the need for mid-tarsal support is greatly reduced. This helps eliminate the “hard bump” feel under the foot. Specifically designed for dynamic and more natural foot control with some cushioning, Downunders offers excellent metatarsal support and will custom mold to the foot within a few days of wearing. Downunders is an excellent choice for more competitive runners as well as those with heel and forefoot pain related to plantar fasciitis and neuroma. Both Total Supports and Downunders utilize “new school” biomechanical support of the heel. Superfeet was the first serious over-the-counter foot support, hitting the market over 30 years ago. Originally designed for ski boots and hiking boots, it entered the athletic market with some success. The only foot support available for years, it became the staple until about 10 years ago when others woke up to the fact that foot supports both worked and were needed. Functioning very well, but mostly unchanged since inception, they may take some getting used to. Fairly lightweight with fair cushioning, Superfeet has yet to address the forefoot to any major extent. Still, this product remains among the elite in over-the-counter foot support devices. If an issue such as an ache or pain arises, first check the outsole and midsole of your shoes for excessive wear. If they are fairly new, have them analyzed by your local running store’s personnel for their correct category and function, relative to your foot and gait. If neither are found faulty, a good replacement insert, or over-the-counter orthotic should be tried. If your issues still persist, you should consult a good Podiatrist. In the best interests of his patient, unless he finds an unusual foot abnormality that can only be addressed by a custom orthotic, a good Podiatrist will first make sure a store bought device has already been tested. Depending on the runner’s needs, the device will cost from about $10 for a heel cup or heel cushion to just under $40 for a full support. A custom orthotic will range from $275 to more than $600. This is all the more reason to first exhaust over-the-counter devices. If you are having issues such as aches and pains when you run or walk or have questions regarding shoes, socks and inserts and how they can help keep you running pain and injury-free, stop in your local running store and try some on. Your feet and body will love you for it.

Road Rage Tips

Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the immediate Past President of that Organization. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.

November/December

Following up on last months article, and with recent events continuing to show the danger for us on the roads, I have some suggestions should you or your group ride encounter someone similar to the 72 year old in Texas who ran cyclists off the road; stopped, threatening them with a baseball bat, and then crushing a riders new bike with his car as he left. While I know this happens all too often to all of us here are my suggestions on how to deal with the situation so that the outcome is in our best interests: 1- Use your technology: A: Call 911 immediately; Always tell the operator the perp is threatening your life, and is armed (in this case, the baseball bat is a lethal weapon, not to mention the dangerous instrumentality that is his vehicle). Law enforcement tends to respond more rapidly when they know it has life or death potential. B: wUse your cell phone video to capture the words and behavior of the perp. The odds are the Texas crazy man would have walked if it were just a “he said she said” situation. The video they had made certain he was arrested, and charged with a felony. Your best weapon against this type of a situation is your cell phone. We all make sure we have our cell phones when out riding. USE IT 2. We always need to keep our cool: In the video of this incident, the cyclists were not screaming, they were controlled, and did nothing beyond asking him why he was behaving badly. 3. Do nothing to further antagonize the perp. Remember everything you do or say is on video as well. The suggestions above obviously are for when there is already an emergency or threatening situation. What works better is to take steps to minimize the potential conflict. In this case, the cyclists were doing everything right. Be safe in this offseason of training and recovery. I hope to see you all at the races, or on the road next year. Brian Harrington Immediate Past President, USATriathlon Board of Directors Race Announcer Attorney 49

TAMPA BAY RACE COUNCIL – November/2013

written by Lynn Gray

Dear Race Directors, Organizers and Participants,

The Tampa Bay Race Council is now underway and we would like to share our goals as it relates to the race event community.

* To promote camaraderie, professionalism, and unity among new and existing race directors with the emphasis on helping each other market their race; with the inclusion of assisting with volunteerism whenever possible * To implement a code of ethics among existing and new race directors as it relates to their implementation of road racing and/or other road/triathlon/adventure events * To establish a unified yearly calendar to foster non-duplication of race events as much as possible * To provide programs and services aimed at educating new race directors, such that their event goal is done with the highest amount of success

Thus Far: * The council has decided on putting our logo on all races, which have our complete backing resulting from ethical and professional practices * The council welcomes race directors to join us on Facebook and profit by gaining more race direction knowledge and increase participant sign-up from increased cross marketing * An ongoing all inclusive race calendar is being developed, in hopes of minimizing duplication of events. This calendar will assist participants in the planning of their events in advance. * Council meetings will be held monthly alternating between the locations of St. Petersburg and Tampa; this way both sides of the bay are accommodated with the drive. * Each month, one race director will provide a brief presentation on an aspect of their race proven to be successful and which may help guide and educate the rest of us. * There is now increased cross-marketing with each other in helping to get the word out among race participants. If you are currently a race director or are about ready to become one, be it a road race or a triathlon, feel free to contact me. Sincerely,

Lynn Gray

President Tampa Bay Race Council

Making the Transition to Obstacle Racing By Pete Williams

O

bstacle races require athletes to have a versatile skill set. The events require strength and endurance, combining running with climbing ropes and walls, carrying logs, and crawling through claustrophobia-inducing tunnels. Since many athletes fall into two camps – distance runners and the anaerobic strengthtraining gym crowd - they often lack the overall fitness to navigate an obstacle course without walking parts of it. Let’s break down some of the most popular training regimens and give you a game plan to address weaknesses so you’ll be ready to dominate any obstacle event.

CROSSFIT ENTHUSIAST

• WHY IT’S GOOD PREPARATION: CrossFit’s workout of the day (WOD) format, in which athletes do Burpees, pull-ups, pushups, and other exercises in a rapid-fire, anaerobic fashion, provides a good overall base for obstacle racing.

TRIATHLETE

• WHY IT’S GOOD PREPARATION: You’re accustomed to being versatile, training for three disciplines and even a fourth: transitions. A typical mud run has two dozen obstacles and just as many “transitions,” so you’ll be in good shape.

• WHY IT’S LACKING: Most CrossFit WODs include little running. • WHY IT’S LACKING: Triathletes tend to do little beyond endurance So while CrossFitters power through obstacles, they often struggle with work.
