RUNNING INTO SUMMER I
am writing this article thinking about the Boston Marathon which just nished, and it was a hot one! It was one of the hottest on record since the temperatures got into the 90’s. As Florida runners, we do not nd running in the 90’s that unusual. Anyone training for longer events knows that we become like vampires since we don’t like the sun coming up on us since it drains our energy. If you continue to run or walk from spring into summer, you will nd that your body gets acclimated to the heat and humidity. The best thing you can do is to prepare for the hotter weather and make adjustments to your training, equipment and nutrition.
Nathan, Amphipod and Fuel Belt. Boston Bill offers a great value for very good running sunglasses, which are a must for Florida activities. Products like Body Glide, a non-petroleum lubricant, and Dry Goods, an aerosol lubricant, help eliminate chang and blisters. The fabrics from companies such as Nike, Brooks, Asics and Saucony have gotten lighter and help promote moisture management, keeping runners cooler. Sox from Balega, Feetures and Thorlo will help prevent blisters and keep you drier. Even though we all perspire during summer running, these technical fabrics will make our bodies happier and more comfortable while we are moving.
Some adjustments to training could be running inside on a treadmill for a few miles, then nishing your run outside. Running or walking in the woods is also a little cooler than running in the full sunlight. I would recommend bug spay for woods’ running in the summer because ying insects can ruin an enjoyable experience. Another way to get those miles in is to split a daily running regimen into one run in the morning and one run in the evening. The miles are cumulative so you will get the same benet with less stress from the heat. One of the best ways to get in some extra running type training is aqua jogging in a pool. This refreshing activity will give you a good workout with no strain on your body.
Proper nutrition is not only critical for summer running, it is critical for daily living. We are all a study in chemistry and we should try several options to keep ourselves hydrated and energized for summer activities. Companies such as Gu, Hammer, Accel and Cliff products offer everything from energy gels to powder to chewables. These items furnish the body with both carbohydrates and electrolyte replacement to help us get through longer workouts.Water is also essential with any type of summer activity. We need to stay hydrated all summer long. As you run from spring to summer, try some new things with your training, equipment and nutrition. This time of year is a good time for experimentation before those hot humid days take over.
The equipment for warmer weather running has continually gotten better over the years. There is a large selection of portable water belts and containers from

Are You Prepared for Summer Training? Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, CPed With the sweltering summer months just about upon us, many runners are planning their yearly tapering regimen. But a hardy group of marathon trainers will be just beginning to train for their fall marathons and half marathons. Most early morning or evening runs will include some time in the sun, resulting in the dreaded summer triad – sun (infra-red and ultra-violet rays), heat (temperature) and humidity (moisture). Let’s first address the sun. Infra-red rays are the ones that we feel warming our bare skin or the clothing covering it. The colors we wear make a significant difference. White is best because it reflects the sun’s heat. The darker or deeper the color shade, the more it absorbs and holds onto heat, culminating in the warmest color, black. So, to stay as cool as possible, try to wear white or pastels when the sun is out. This is especially important for tops because they cover a large surface area of the skin. Short colors are a little less important because the surface area is smaller. Even lighter color socks and shoes can make a difference in the amount of heat that the body will try to eliminate. Because the body’s natural heat elimination process is evaporation, the warmer you are the more you will perspire. So, the lighter the colors you wear, the less moisture you will have to deal with to cool your body. This also relates to the type of hat you wear. Overall, the most protective and coolest is a white or light colored mesh with a fairly long bill. It both shades and allows the substantial heat generated from the head to be released. Underneath, the bill should be of a darker color to absorb bright reflections from running surfaces before they get to the eyes. The bill also protects the face from potentially harmful UVA and UVB rays. We cannot feel UVA or UVB rays as they enter the skin. They are most important in the production of Vitamin D, the skin-protecting vitamin. Recent research is showing that it is extremely important in cancer prevention. Now, the dilemma – to sunscreen or not. Today, most sunscreens block both UVA and UVB rays, all but eliminating all important Vitamin D production. This could be one reason that those having used sunscreens all their lives have more of a tendency (from some research) to develop some type of skin cancer. Another could be that some early sunscreens only blocked the UVB (skin burning) rays and not the UVA (skin penetrating) rays, so those not burning stayed in the sun for longer periods. Still others are questioning the chemicals being used in their formulations. All this being said, moderation and some protection is probably warranted. If you are spending a fair amount of time running in the sun, look for tops stickered with a UPF (Universal Protection Factor) 40+, as they offer excellent sun protection on their own. Compare fabrics, as they can vary in weight and breathability. Your local running store is your best resource. Well-designed synthetic fabrics are an extension of the skin. They begin by immediately wicking perspiration to the fabric’s surface and then spreading it out to most efficiently begin the body-cooling, heat-dissipating, evaporation process. The idea is that the more you spread the moisture the faster cooling begins and continues. Efficient evaporation means that the body doesn’t have to work as hard pumping blood to the skin’s surface to cool itself. Although heat can slow you down somewhat, humidity is what makes the air seem thick and hard to breathe – the excess moisture in the air most likely crowds out some of the oxygen entering the lungs. Hypothetically, it can also create more air resistance as the body moves through it. You’ve noticed how much more effortlessly running seems on a crisp, cool day. Or, how much farther you can hit a golf ball on the same day. Because your body is working harder during this time of year, summer’s added energy and fluid requirements bring us to a most important question: “How can I keep my energy level up, especially during my long training runs?” This is where energy drinks and energy foods become most important. Because your energy needs are so high to keep you moving efficiently and your fluid needs to keep you from overheating, continuous replenishment is absolutely necessary. Don’t underestimate the nutrients and electrolytes that you are using up and sweating out, the energy that you are expending and the water loss that you are experiencing, especially during these hot and humid summer months. High-tech, quick release nutrition foods help to quickly and efficiently replenish what you are expending. Your local running store can recommend an energy food regimen for you to help keep you moving with reduced fatigue, minimal cramping, quicker recovery time and less chance of heat complications. Chance of injury can also be reduced from impaired performance due to low energy levels. How you personally address the summer’s stronger sun, higher heat and humidity, as well as your fluid and energy needs, will determine whether you get the bear or the bear gets you. Get the bear.

THE OLYMPICS ARE COMING! THE OLYMPICS ARE COMING!
Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for twenty six years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and currently serves on the national Board of Directors for USA Triathlon as the Florida Region Representative, holding the office of President of the Board. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.
May/June
In approximately three months, the Olympics will be upon us in London; the triathlon now a growing part of the Summer Olympics, to be held as well. Unfortunately, our (United States) chances of medaling appear to be slim at this point. None of our men have qualified yet; they hope to at the ITU Olympic qualifier in San Diego on May 11-12; while two of our women qualified early on: Sarah Groff, and Gwen Jorgensen. Neither of them raced well in Sydney, the first ITU race of the season in early April. The men could be buoyed by the reappearance of our Floridian mainstay, Hunter Kemper, who will be trying to qualify for his fourth Olympic triathlon (there have only been four races including 2012!). Hunter is coming off a major injury which occurred last Fall when a slow pro ran into Hunter while Hunter was leading the completion of the first bike lap, with the slow athlete just arriving from the swim in transition. He had surgery, then fought a serious infection; the San Diego event will be his only qualification chance. Should the United States not qualify athletes at San Diego, it will be up to a selection process to fill slots. Look for information as to the live broadcast of both the men’s and women’s races, which will be on one of the NBC networks, most probably the NBC Universal network. Hopefully, some of our active triathlon groups will have “watch” parties. Mad Dogs, are you reading this??
BIKE ACCIDENTS CONTINUE TO PLAGUE US We continue to have numerous bicycle/car accidents resulting in serious injuries to the cyclists. Please remember to properly insure yourselves; Florida law allows you to carry enhanced PIP/Med PAY, as well and uninsured/underinsured coverages on your auto, which will protect you in event your hit while on your bike, or, for that matter, while jogging. Please don’t depend on the irresponsible driver to be responsible about carrying adequate insurance. You can and must protect yourself. MUCH ADO ABOUT SOMETHING By Bob Schwartz
With much anticipation and excitement I finished my run, went inside and took off my shoes. The latter I’d done innumerable times before, but this time was different. This was the day of reckoning. After a month of my personal experiment, the results were about to be revealed. I grabbed the tops of my shoes and took a deep breath. As the suspense heightened I glanced towards my wife and requested, “Drum roll, please.” Before revealing the results and what happened next, let me start at the beginning to provide some background. When the focus on running form became more prevalent, I didn’t think much about it. My motto was if it works don’t fix it. It was running for gosh sakes; this wasn’t a golf swing, tennis stroke or even a basketball jump shot. I recognized that form was significant for those activities and recalled honing my shot with a continuous recitation of “square your body, elbow in, bend your wrist, fingertip release, and follow through.” But running? The only cadence in my head was one foot forward, body to follow. Oh sure, I had my share of injuries over the years, but I never attributed those to form, but to a violation of one or more of the “too” principles. As in, too many miles, too much speedwork, too many fast long runs or the all too common double whammy of too much, too soon. All of which were too bad. But then something happened. One of my running buddies told me his wife had seen me running and asked him if I was combating an injury, as it appeared that I was leading and leaning with the left side of my body and a bit choppy with my stride. The good news was I wasn’t injured but, then again, the bad news was I wasn’t injured (if that was the form I was exhibiting when healthy). Of course I quickly dismissed her recount, which led me to the only reasonable conclusion. His wife’s vision must lean to the left. When I ran I felt graceful, fluid and nimble. Leading/leaning to the left? Really? All I kept hearing was Beyonce’s song “Irreplaceable” (“To the left, to the left, to the left, to the left”). I then realized that after 40 years of running I’d never actually seen myself run minus an occasional reflection in a storefront glass window. Sure I’d seen race photos etc. but never any actual ongoing examination of my running form. I hadn’t paid a lot of attention to how I ran, only that I ran. Maybe my form could and should be tweaked but, then again, what about many elite runners who ran fast despite quirks in their form? Such as, Paula Radcliffe running like a bobblehead, or Alberto Salazar’s shuffling stride, Kara Goucher or Meb Keflezighi’s heel striking or Bill Rodgers’ arm motion crossing his body. I then concluded that was all irrelevant because, guess what, I wasn’t elite. So I read a lot about running form (upper body aligned, tall and relaxed; shoulders loose with forward lean; shorter stride/quick leg turnover; land lightly with mid-foot strike etc.) and decided I’d try and implement things for a month. Most importantly, I’d flraceplace.com

concentrate on avoiding my usual heel striking foot landing (inefficient braking effect and also producing more stress/impact) and aim for the mid-foot landing. Hence my experiment. The proof would be in the pudding or, rather, the substantiation would be in the sole. After 30 days of concentrating on my foot landing, I examined my soles to see how the mid foot strike had changed my usual shoe wear pattern of the heels. Back to “Drum roll, please.”. I turned my shoes over and all I could say was “What the heck?” I was crushed. My wear pattern was pretty much the same as always! Go figure. Apparently, given my limited attention span, my powers of form concentration were not lasting longer than for about the first 600 yards of my runs. I then took the next step, literally, and elected to go for a video running gait analysis at a local sports medicine clinic. I’d get to the bottom of this lean to the left thing. The analysis was designed to address biomechanical abnormalities that should be corrected to improve performance and efficiency and involved a clinical exam and a treadmill run examining the angulations, strength and flexibility in my hips, knees, ankles etc. It provided information of things below my knee but way over my head with terminology like my Q angle (I was feeling more obtuse than Q) and ankle equinus (limited upward bending of the ankle joint.) etc. The video also examined hip hiking (hitch hiking I knew but I learned the former was the lifting of one’s hip/pelvis on one side). Early on in the process I sensed my belief of being a gracefully efficient runner was about to be shattered. Perhaps I was overly sensitive, but when the professionals performing the exam began raising their eyebrows, whispering to each other and subtly shaking their heads, I was getting a not so subtle clue to their opinion. After the analysis was completed, I was advised I had flexibility and strength imbalances, excessive shoulder and hip lateral rotation, pressed too hard on the ball of my right foot, had a contralateral hip drop and internal thigh rotation due to hip weakness, tight lower back and hip flexors as well as overpronation, overstriding and right arm overswinging. Eventually they were over with my various “overs.” I couldn’t help but then somewhat jokingly say, “Other than that, it’s all good right?” One of them then added, “Oh, plus you lead with your left.” Great. Eventually, I walked away with some exercises, stretches, and running drills etc. Over the next few months I did implement everything and was confident that concentrating on my running form had assisted with my speed, efficiency, and leg discomforts. Shortly thereafter, I was doing some cross training on the elliptical at the fitness center when my wife came by. She was looking at me for a bit and had a slightly quizzical expression as I pounded away, feeling smooth and graceful. Me and the machine in harmony. She then said, “Do you know you lead with your left?” Oy! I wonder if there is video elliptical gait analysis? Bob is the author of the best selling humor book “I Run, Therefore I Am – NUTS!” Sequel coming out in Nov. 2012! Check out: http://www.runninglaughsblog.com May/June
