or podorthist and sent to a lab to be made. What I am discussing in this article is the accommodative insert that most retailers sell. These accommodative inserts are sold under names like Spenco, Powerstep, Superfeet, Good Feet and Aetrex just to name a few. There is a general thought that 80% of people should have some type of corrective inserts in their shoes. With running and walking, foot movement becomes very repetitive so the importance of inserts is magnified.These inserts are made with different densities to give you cushioning and support.The term for density in these materials is called a durometer. The higher the durometer, the denser and harder the material. If you have a flat foot or tend to roll in excessively, you probably need an insert that is harder on the medial side to help prevent that roll. If you have high arches, you tend to land on the ball of your foot and can roll out excessively, so you would need more cushioning. Everyone in between these foot types needs to be aware of their tendencies in order to help balance the foot. Shoes come with corrective features built into the shoe, so you need to make sure that your insert matches up with the shoe. Once again, you are going to need the knowledge of a experienced salesperson to help you select the right insert for your foot. The only way to do this is to try them on together and to run on a treadmill in the store or run outside. Some of the more supportive inserts will take some getting used to and when new should only be worn for short periods of time. Most accommodative inserts generally have a life of about a year with regular use. Inserts in both dress shoes and running shoes can make your feet feel better and will also help make your shoes last longer.

hen you are going to buy a pair of running or walking shoes, you should go to a specialty store with knowledgeable sales people. Most of these stores do a gait analysis which will tell you what type of shoe you should look for. They should also check the length and width of your foot for the proper fit. Knowledgable personnel will then select a shoe model or two for you to try on to see what feels the most comfortable. I like to hear the phrase “This shoe feels like it was made for my foot!”That means the customer is happy with the fit.

If we could just get the color right every time, we would feel like we have done a great job.

The hard thing about fitting people’s feet is getting shoes and feet to match up. Shoes are made to be identical albeit left and right.There are fit differences in companies in that each company uses its own unique computer generated set of lasts. Lasts are what they build the shoe around which give shoes a fit characteristic. That is one reason why once your favorite shoe has gone through an update, it doesn’t fit the same. The manufacturer could have changed the last on you. These manufacturers then build their own proprietary features into a shoe for example Asics Gel, Brooks DNA, Nike Fly Wire or Mizuno Wave. These features added in the right areas along with Polyurethane, EVA and other plastics give you the cushioning and support you are looking for.

To create a better fit from shoes that are built to be identical, we can try to use an insert. There are two major types of inserts, one is a functional insert designed to change the functional movement of your foot. The functional insert is custom fitted usually by a podiatrist

RUNNING - EVERYONE NEEDS AT LEAST ONE HEALTHY PASSION

To me, a passion is something that keeps you going, makes you happy and gets you out of bed in the morning. One should be your job or at least something related to your job. If it’s not, you can be relegated to many years of wasted natural “therapy” time. A passion can be something that keeps you propped up when everything else seems to be going wrong or trying to knock you down. It could be anything from helping people in need to spending time with your dog. Some events we cannot change but all are temporary, time-wise or in scope. Your passion can help you cope and give you time to overcome any obstacle. It can get your mind off of your problems, clear your thinking, and help you realize that there is much more to life than worrying, especially about things we cannot change. With each passing day, exercise is proving to be one of the most powerfully healthy passions for both mind and body. And because you’re reading this, one of yours is probably our popular sport of running.

Running is the easiest exercise in which to participate. You’ve heard it before, “all you need is a pair of shoes and some comfortable running apparel” and out the door you go. One thing though that will put a damper on your running passion is pain.

I just love to work with runners who are experiencing anything trying to keep them from participating in their sport. That’s where my passion comes in.

While working with runners for over 37 years, clinically speaking, I’ve noticed that there are running pains that react favorably to specific changes. It takes a basic understanding of the individual’s anatomy, gait and shoe mechanics, making specific recommendations and then noticing how the body responds to these changes while in motion.

Initially, I received my massage license basically to help alleviate runners’ injuries through muscle manipulation. Although massage works very well, I became aware that I was working on resulting pain and not the preventive aspects of such pain.

After a bit of research I found that there was a wealth of information to learn by studying pedorthics. I was the only student in my class whose sole interest was in working with injured runners. Although we are trained the fabrication of custom foot orthotics and shoe modifications, my goal was to study abnormal foot and ankle motion and how everyday over-the-counter products can be used to help eliminate common running issues. This is my passion – to keep runners running without pain. My satisfaction comes from seeing or hearing from those whom I’ve worked with stating something like: “No more pain…my running is great!”

This brings to mind a couple, Rob and Brenda, wincing in pain who came into the Thorlo sock booth at the Disney Marathon expo with toe and ball-of-the-foot pain, Brenda’s being much worse. She also had a little pain on top of her foot as well as on the outside of her ankle. They were hoping a padded sock would help get them through the half. I said it would probably be a band-aid but asked if they had the time to get to the bottom of what was actually causing the pain. They enthusiastically said “YES”! A long story short, their shoes were the proper model, both Brooks Ghost, a half-size (male) and a size (female) short, and have been worn out for over a month (fortunately they didn’t buy them in Florida from one of my accounts – they bought them online). I mentioned that new shoes were in order and if they wanted to potentially run with minimal pain, they could wear them the next day, along with a new pair of Experia socks to pad their inflamed balls-of-the-feet. “Wear a new pair of shoes the next day!!?” they exclaimed. Here’s where a little biomechanical and shoe-fitting experience comes in. I knew how their old shoes fit as well as the most likely causes of their pains. And putting them in the same style of shoe is almost a no-brainer. I said, “You know the pain that you will have wearing your old shoes tomorrow, right? I’m pretty confident that your new shoes and socks will work very well (99.9% – there’s no 100% when working with the body) and you both will have a better and much more comfortable race”.

I received the below email about two hours after the Disney Half.

As a quick refresher because I’m sure you talked to hundreds if not thousands of people this week at the Disney Expo, you assisted my girlfriend and I with our Brooks sneaker purchases. Brenda was having issues with the ball of her feet and her toes.

You quickly assessed that she was in the wrong size shoe and that both of us were running in worn out shoes.

I am happy to report that we finished the half marathon today - our first - with absolutely no issues with our feet or shoes.

After 13 miles, our feet were certainly tired but not sore because of the shoes. You were absolutely correct that new Brooks would be fine.

Thank you so much for spending a large amount of time with us. It made a huge difference in our run. Your knowledge and expertise surely showed, and we are greatly appreciative.

Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the immediate Past President of that Organization.

He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.

The Vuelta Puerto Rico is a three day 375 mile bicycle circumnavigation of the island of Puerto Rico. It’s purpose is to give athletes the feel of riding in a tour like atmosphere. Police motorcycle escorts block roads so as you pass through towns, you are unhindered, just like a Tour De France participant. There are three different peletons, based on average speed, with approximately 650 total riders. The “A” peleton consists of riders who will average twenty five miles per hour, riding between twenty five to thirty miles an hour. Obviously, this is the smallest peleton, and it grows smaller each day. At the other end is peleton “C,” which averages fifteen miles per hour, riding between fifteen and twenty miles per hour for each day.

The distances are HUGE! Day one: 155 miles; day two: 80 miles with plenty of climbing; and day three: 135 miles, usually into a stiff headwind. It’s not for the faint of heart.

This event is well supported, with numerous sag stops, great police coverage, and some of the most beautiful vistas while riding you will ever see. The group of riders I trained with, under the able coaching of Roy Foley (aeroprocoaching. com) were all excellent athletes, well trained, and all of whom successfully completed an event they will never forget. For me, unfortunately, my performance was forgettable, due largely to my body’s inability to replace fluid and electrolytes as quickly as I burned them ; especially in 92 degree record breaking heat.

Normal temperature for January was advertised as between 70 and 80 degrees.

Nonetheless, all of the aeropro athletes, including coach Roy Foley, with his seven flats, completed the event.

If you decide to try this event, I recommend the following: learn how to bunny hop potholes; the potholes there can swallow you whole! Always avoid grates; for some reason, they are designed to grab your wheel rather than allow safe passage. Plan to take in amazingly breathtaking views of the Island and the Caribbean; and make certain your hotel in Old San Juan has an elevator. My room was on the fifth floor of the Casablanca Hotel; a charming place with no elevators; made for some good leg workouts both pre and post race. Finally, if you meet any of the participants of this event, be respectful; it is quite an accomplishment; and we all are the better for having been there.

This person will symbolize the greatness of running as a sport and as an individual who has built positive relationships in giving others the gift of “movement”. Hall of Famers will be chosen yearly. Your recommendations are welcomed. A yearly TBRC 5K race will be held raising money for a high school or college running scholarship as well.

Profile In Running: Carrie Pustilnik

Carrie Pustilnik was raised in Boca Raton, FL. She began her early childhood years playing tennis competitively. Growing up in a competitive tennis family she developed discipline, responsibility, and leadership. She blossomed into a nationally top ranked junior player, before entering The University of Tennessee in 1994 on a full Tennis Scholarship. After four years playing on the SEC Top ranked Tennis team she graduated in the winter of 1997.

Carrie is extremely confident, motivated, hardworking, driven, and successful. She is the mother of three young girls, ages twelve, nine and seven. For the last thirteen years she has been a top telephone sales rep for a non-profit small business organization, known as NFIB. . With her drive and passion she is dedicated and focused on making sure she is always the best she can be. She trains & mentors many young runners and many marathoner runners. As well as, leads an active life and lives a healthy lifestyle. Throughout her life, Carrieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hobby has always been running. In Feb 2007, she ran her first marathon in Ft .Lauderdaleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s A1A Marathon, and came in first in her age group. In the last six years, she has run a total of 16 marathons including A1A four times holds course record( Two-time Winner 2010:2:58 , 2011: 3:00), Philly, NYC , Marine Corp, Chicago, St. Jude Memphis, Boston three times, The Disney Goofy Challenge, Palm Beach , and Ogden. Her most recent was a 50k in the Palm 100 on March 23, 2013, in which she finished as the first Female with the time of 4:32:53 with a course record, and to her resume she was the first South Floridian to cross the finish line in the April 2010 Boston Marathon. Her next challenges will be the 2014 A1A Marathon and 2014 Boston Marathon which will be her 17h and 18th. She reached a status as an elite runner in the Palm Beach Marathon on December 06, 2009 with her PR of 2 hours and 57 minutes and qualified and ran with the elite development program in Chicago on 10/10/10, where she ran a 3:00:10. Carrie trains on her treadmill at 4:30 am in her garage before work 6 days a week. She runs because she feels it is the most relaxing part of her stressful day and running a marathon is 3hrs of peace and quiet for her. Her real passion is running local 5ks with her three little girls. They inspire her and she inspires them because they know if u believe in yourself and work hard you can accomplish anything. She is excited for Boston this year because she is taking her girls and will run with them the day before marathon in the Boston 5k!
