Be Kind to fellow triathletes Month
Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for twenty six years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and currently serves on the national Board of Directors for USA Triathlon as the Florida Region Representative, holding the office of President of the Board. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.
Now that we’re in the heart of the racing season (and in Florida, we’re lucky enough to have a race within driving distance nearly every weekend!), I’d like to make a suggestion that can make everyone’s experience a better one: make a conscious effort to be nice to one of your competitors. We triathletes are an intense breed; sometimes (probably most of the time) so focused on our own training and racing to forget those around you are actually human beings. I can prove this theory to you: if you say something as brief as “hello” to them; or, even if you want to go radical, tell them they are “looking great” on the course, they will almost always respond in kind. It’s important to remember that everyone racing with you has a lot in common with you; for starters, they aren’t home in bed with the other 98% of the population! One of the reasons I’ve been around the sport and lifestyle of triathlon for thirty years is the quality of people and their friendliness, humor, and helpfulness that has always seemed to be a big part of the environment. Lately, however, I’ve witnessed some not so friendly attitudes by athletes towards other athletes, towards officials, and even to volunteers. This is not to say there aren’t gestures of great sportsmanship. My daughter, Brianne Gaal was participating in a charity race/eating challenge in Raleigh, NC a couple of weeks ago when she had the misfortune of having not one but two simultaneous flats, in a short bike leg (she didn’t even have a pump or tube with her, silly girl) and one of her competitors tossed her his entire kit strapped to his seat. Unfortunately, she had borrowed a teammate’s disc wheel, and realized it was a tubular (not a good idea to mix clinchers and tubulars), so her day was done. But her fellow athlete was willing to assist her without hesitation. More kind gestures like this make for a better world in our sport. I know, I know, am I not a USAT Board member? Yes. Isn’t what I just described a violation of the rule that says “no assistance?” Yes. Is that a stupid rule when the athlete rendering assistance actually puts his/her own race in jeopardy should they have a flat? YES! Good works should be rewarded, not penalized. Helping a teammate gain unfair advantage, not so much. But being willing to help an athlete in need; go for it. Let’s try to promise to make an effort to meet at least one new competitor at your next race; to make a point of talking to and encouraging a first timer (they are usually easy to spot); and by all means, give a positive shout out to a policeman, volunteer, or God forbid, even a race official. Without all of these people present on race day, you wouldn’t be racing. Stay positive, and remember, if racing is not fun at some level, you’ll soon be joining the ranks of former triathletes. We need you here at the races. Brian Harrington, Race Announcer, Immediate Past President, Current board member, USAT Representing the Florida Region

MINIMAL SHOES - BUYER BE AWARE Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, C PED As I talk to running stores around the country, I ask the question, “What is a minimal shoe?” For the most part, the answer is “a shoe with a lower heel-to-forefoot height ratio”, and maybe adding, “a thin and more flexible midsole.” And they’re right, according to what most shoe manufacturers have been touting and are currently producing. Can essentially one shoe be good for every runner when we’ve been telling everyone that there have always been runners needing one of three basic shoe types – neutral, stability or motion control? Sure, a lower heel does more naturally and seemingly positively change the human gait. But does it suffice to allow a runner who severely overpronates to wear the same shoe that an oversupinator is wearing? Common biomechanical sense tells me, no. How about a lightweight runner vs. a heavyweight runner? Far too many individualities exist to think that one shoe will be good for all. Are minimal shoes safer? I agree that they can, with a lower heel, put the runner in a more biomechanically advantageous position as compared to most running shoes produced today, but at what cost? Lower to the ground minimal shoes seem to be a quickfix for manufacturers who haven’t been able to keep up with those in making the most mechanically efficient and injury preventive shoes currently on the market. Mechanically they are better, but at a cost that is only beginning to arise – foot structure breakdown. Thinner is not better, less is not more when shoes begin to compromise impact protection from modern man’s concrete and asphalt world. Our fat pads underfoot have evolved over the last 50,000 years to accommodate natural, three-dimensional surfaces. Our feet are called “mobile adapters” and are designed to easily traverse the earth’s varying and undulating surfaces, continually adapting and helping eliminate over-use to any particular foot or body structure. The earth is also forgiving and offers us natural shock absorption. On the other hand, our newly introduced hard, two-dimensional surfaces throw a wrench into our mobility equation. This surface is so consistent that the foot can no longer be infinitely mobile. It is relegated to basically one motion determined by both the flat hard surface and the shoe that it is enclosed within. Today, we still need shock protection similar to what the earth has always offered us for the 50,000 years that modern man has been around. And, this shock protection should ultimately be designed to least affect natural, barefoot gait. Anytime we put any type of foot covering on the foot, we alter biomechanics. The challenge for shoe manufacturers has always been to develop shoes which closely emulate the function of barefoot mobility, but in a protective package. Some have taken this challenge much more seriously than others by investing in state-of-the-art biomechanical labs and working with some of the best biomechanical experts and university labs in the world. Simply explained, the idea is to first study the entire body in motion, barefoot, on forgiving, natural surfaces. Then once this control is established, try to get as close as possible to this natural body position and function when the protective factor of shoes are added. This process is painstakingly intense as even minute adjustments to the shoes can produce dramatic positive or negative results. The best manufacturers can make footwear adjustments on the spot and see results within hours. Others produce footwear with “ideas” and wait to see how runners react to them – kind of a “try and see” approach. Such shoes are usually the ones that seem to change most from year to year. These are the reasons all running shoes are not created equal - and the reason why most say that you have to “break your shoes in”. It’s really just the opposite that is happening – most shoes are breaking you in. You are the one who must get used to their often compromised mechanics. A good, properly fitted and mechanically efficient running shoe does not need to be “broken in”. I have fit untold numbers of runners the day before a big race or marathon and have afterwards gotten innumerable calls and emails with statements such as, “pr, great race, no pain, and I’m not going to quit running now!” Where am I going with this? Simply, there are extremely good “core” running shoes out there that are mechanically efficient enough and protective enough to help you run just about as long and far as you want. They are the safest shoes to use for the majority of your running. Some even come very close to functioning similarly to a minimal shoe but with all of the protection factors that a conventional running shoe offers. Although I don’t see minimal shoes replacing conventional running shoes for the vast majority of runners, I do see them as a very relevant addition to the runner’s arsenal. Minimal shoes on the market today are not much more than racing flats. Other than having a lower heel and thinner midsole, dimensionally and structurally speaking, there’s not much more designed into these products that scream “barefoot”. In any event, if you so choose to try a minimal running shoe, begin very slowly, maybe running a couple hundred yards or so and gradually working up to your shortest run of the week. Try them during your track workout. Think of them as your cross-training running shoe. Take special care to notice any Achilles tendon or calf pain or tightness as the lowered heel of a minimal shoe puts more stretch on these tissues. If experiencing any pain, especially in the back of the leg, heel and arch area, or general foot soreness, don’t try to run through it. Podiatrists and Physical Therapists have been experiencing a mini-surge in business recently, and are relating it to minimal and “toe shoes”. If ignoring the need for shock absorption, my guess is that you’ll be at least buying larger shoes in the future due to structure and tissue breakdown in the foot. Case in point, I was helping a female runner who came to buy a pair of “regular” running shoes after two and a half months of exclusively running in her “toe shoes”, stating that her feet were “just sore”. I asked what size she was wearing and she said, “7½”. I looked at her foot and it looked more like a 9 or 9½. Well, much to her great dismay, she ended up with a size 10 Wide! I believe structure and tissue stress due to lack of shock absorption was the main culprit.

Why so many impact injuries? Not long ago at the Big Sur Marathon event I noticed a number of runners and walkers with corrective bands, knee sleeves, kinesio taping, and other mixtures of biomechanical remedies. This is in light of the fact that shoe technology, shoe companies, and running education are at an all-time high. I include walkers in this mix. So why do walkers and runners continue to be experience injuries? The obvious reason is there are simply many more walkers and runners engaged in distance sports. However, as a walk to run coach and a runner for more than 45 years, I do not buy that factor alone. Let’s explore together what our runners and walkers quiet likely are asking themselves when they suffer what seems to be an inevitable if not probable part of the process of getting fit with distance training. Could it be the shoe? Yes and No. Years of research on impact and biomechanical technology reveal top running shoe sellers offer tremendously advanced cushioned and or stability shoes. In contrast to now, in the seventies I began running in Maas Brothers sneakers since they did not offer running shoes, and then later advanced to New Balance 990 series for men. No injuries then to report. However with the onset of the “racing flat” in the 1980s…many of us had impact injures on the foot, most notably neuromas and stress fractures on the metatarsals. The new “barefoot” running shoes have brought podiatrists a growing amount of business due to the enormous impact of the foot…not to mention the rest of the body. Could it be the longer distance? No doubt continued impact on hard surface results in muscular skeleton challenges. However, the famous coach of years ago, Arthur Lydiard introduced the LSD running, long slow distance. Dedicated followers of LSD went many more miles to gain fitness and conquer time goals than most folks train today. The variable was the slower speed in which we trained. We should question notions that marathon training can be completed in three to four months with time goals on top of the brevity of recommended training phases. It is in fact a lifestyle and lifetime of fitness which enables those of us to continue multiple marathons and distance events without getting sidelined with injuries. Could it be due to lack of muscular strength? Now we are getting closer to the answer. Increased muscular strength goes a long way to protect the bones from impact, especially when the upper body is strong enough to help “lift” the legs while running. Strong core and hip strength brings the integrity of good posture. Posture is critical in distance running due to the repetition of steps. A slight angle forward can magnify knee problems, hamstring issues, and back problems. Weak calves spell danger to the Achilles tendon, one of the largest tendons in the body. The tendon must do most of the work since between angling forward and weak calves, guess what has to take the brunt. Could it be the lack of stretching? Absolutely. Powerful strong leg muscles can go up and down hills in a single bound, but without stretching before and afterward the muscles are shortened due to contraction. Too much contraction creates a limited range of motion. A limited range of motion translates to a decreased stride resulting in the body’s compensating more to the left or right especially if the left and right leg muscle groups are uneven. Then there is the issue of neglecting to stretch. How many of us do the poor person’s massage called Yoga? How many of us can afford a weekly massage? How many of us use a foam roller and/or rolling stick? There are many ways to prevent muscle imbalances and tightness. Could it be just too much racing? Always did it to me. We don’t purposely intend to go to all these “unique” and inaugural half marathons and marathons with fancy names in front of them in locations all around the world. Big business is finding ways to reel us into their event from out of town by giving us amenities above and beyond the race. We now go on race vacations. Consider another popular alternative large race events offer; that of multiple race events in one weekend. Now, we can not only do a marathon one day, but a half marathon the next day. I think Disney calls it Goofy…hmm, what were they thinking. Let’s go a step further. Some race events now offer up to 4 events in one weekend for the biggest medal ever and not only do you receive the medal, but if you go fast enough, an award may be given. One big factor which the “multiple and many” participants face is overuse syndromes due to preparing for the ultra-distance; and if they aren’t physically prepared the results of multiple miles on hard surfaces will up the ante for injuries. I have experienced each of the above training errors especially my first fifteen years or so of running. The solutions to preventing injuries are found in the questions themselves. I hope some of the insight imparted will help you understand why many overuse injuries are occurring and bring awareness of preventive ways of distance training. Paddle Boarding By Pete Williams It’s a warm afternoon in Clearwater and the water, as usual, is flat. That means surf’s up for the dozen or so people standing on boards and using long paddles to navigate the waters just off the Clearwater Community Sailing Center. Depending on your vantage point, stand-up paddling (or “SUP” for short) is a popular new sport, a challenging core fitness routine, or a recreational alternative to kayaking and boating. “It’s all three,” says Brody Welte, who owns and operates Stand Up Fitness Inc. in St. Petersburg. “You’re not going to find waves everywhere and this is an awesome workout you can do year-round. Plus it’s a lot of fun.” Stand-up paddling dates back centuries in Hawaii, but has taken off in the last few years. From big-wave surfers such as Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama to people who have never been on a surfboard, large numbers of Americans are standing on boards and paddling. Much like a stability ball or BOSU ball, a paddleboard requires athletes to perform a balancing act that enlists the pillar muscles of the hips, shoulders, and core. “The board forces you to stay balanced,” Welte says. “If you have any asymmetries, they get exposed and you can work on them.” First timers kneel on the board initially but soon find they can stand up without too much effort. Welte says only five percent of his newcomers fall in the water unintentionally. “The key is to keep moving,” says Jeff Archer, co-owner of YOLO Board, a board manufacturer in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. “It’s like riding a bike. If you come to a stop without putting your foot down, you tend to fall over.” The learning curve is much quicker than surfing because of the flat water and the wider board. Beginner paddle boards are about 32 inches wide, a foot wider than a surfboard, though paddlers can advance to more narrow boards. Feet should be positioned in an athletic stance, shoulder-width apart, and in roughly the center of the board. (Many boards have inset handles that serve as a good reference point.) Most newcomers to the sport are surprised that they rarely fall into the water—even on their maiden outing, though personal flotation devices are recommended for first timers and required for non-swimmers.
Newbie paddleboarders realize that the long-armed paddling stroke is something of an optical illusion. Though it’s performed in a sweeping motion with a paddle 8 to 10 inches taller than the paddler, the power comes from the hips and midsection, with the arms mostly just along for the ride. “You’re using your hip flexors, core, shoulders, and triceps and transferring that force from the water through the board and your feet up through your entire body,” says Welte, who has become something of a cottage industry in the sport with certification classes for trainers and weeklong camps with Dave Kalama to exotic destinations such as Fiji and Costa Rica. “That’s why from a fitness standpoint it’s one of the best exercises you could ever do. It’s zero impact and you’re really working on everything.” Like cycling or swimming, stand-up paddling can be done at an all-out pace or more leisurely. It’s perfect for interval training. Boards come in numerous sizes depending on the paddler’s height, weight and how the board is to be used. There are longer, heavier boards for exploring nature, sleeker models for racing, and smaller versions that can double as surfboards. High-end boards range in price from $800 to $2,000 and paddles cost $100 to $400. Like the cycling industry, there’s an arms race in SUP, with carbon fiber race boards approaching $3,000. A number of races have popped up in recent years, mostly in Hawaii, California, and Florida but also in inland areas. Many consist of a 3-mile recreational division and a 7-mile elite class. In August, New York organizers will stage an annual 28-mile race around Manhattan. Welte put on the second-annual Gulf Coast Stand-Up Paddleboard Championships in Madeira Beach in May and plans to stage a second-annual YOLO Board Winter Race Series beginning in November. Other upcoming events include the SUP Splash on July 16. Chase Kosterlitz, owner of the Water Monkey Shop in St. Petersburg and a top SUP racer, hosts the annual Fall Paddle Festival in St. Pete on Oct. 29. Newcomers can enter a race almost immediately. The 3-mile events are likened to 5K runs and take only slightly longer (30 minutes on average). Welte has spent more than a decade as a personal trainer but began focusing on stand-up paddling two years ago as a way to get clients out of the gym. Now a typical workout can entail seeing dolphins and stingrays up close. He finds children more receptive to SUP than adults. “Kids have fewer reservations about encountering big scary stuff in the water,” Welte says. “They think it’s awesome and get right up on the board. Once adults get over the mental hurdle, they have a blast.” Upcoming Florida stand-up paddle board races: July 16 – SUP Splash, Postcard Inn, St. Pete Beach http://supsplashrace.com/st-pete/ September 9-10 – Seaside YOLO Celebration, Seaside, FL www.yoloseasiderace.com Oct. 16 – Treasure Island Classic – Treasure Island, FL Oct. 29 – The Fall Paddle Festival – St. Petersburg, FL
