RUNNING AS AN
ART FORM
W
hen I started running over 40 years ago, we believed that anyone not running an 8 minute mile or faster was not really running. They were just jogging and jogging was not considered a bona fide exercise at all. Today, the average marathon time is over 5 hours, which equates to about a 12 minute pace per mile. I now believe a runner is anyone attempting to cover the ground moving as best he can, ranging from a 5 minute mile to a 13 minute mile. In fact we should think about running as an art form due to the image of the body in forward motion. Many of us think about running as work, which eliminates the pleasure from the sport. We set up a schedule to incorporate long runs, tempo runs and track workouts. We also do cross training to help us eliminate the possibility of injury. Looking at running as work, means we force ourselves to do it and we think of it as a chore. There is always a watch to tell us that we are not as fast as we need to be or used to be. If running is work, then we want to get finished and move on to another chore. However, if we look at running as an enjoyable art form, then we want to see more and do more and be more, because good art makes you recognize beauty in various forms. Running as art lets us think of all the integral pieces of the sport as additional dynamics enhancing the finished product. The finished product is a healthier
“you”. The related components are everything from the proper shoes and apparel to the training regimen that works best for you. You must think like an artist and believe every thing you put into the finished product will add value or beauty to what you are doing. If a training regimen, or a shoe or some other item doesn’t work for you find one that does. Don’t do something just because it may be great for someone else because it might be counterproductive for you. I have said many times when it come to nutrition we are all a study in chemistry. That means everybody is different, which is also true with our bodies. Everybody has one foot bigger than the other and we all have our own unique shape. This canvas, we have as a body, is constantly changing so we must make adjustments to be able to enhance the art we are creating. In creating this unique individual we should only add what is absolutely necessary and essential. We cannot create perfection, but we can do our best with what we have. Running as art will make us value the endeavor itself and we will want our body to become an object of beauty. The image of beauty is with our grasp; we can achieve this image by running for the pleasure of accomplishment. Our end product will allow us to both feel and see positive results.

RUNNING SHOE “STUDIES” LEAVE MUCH TO BE DESIRED Gene Ulishney BS HPE, LMT, CPED It seems every month another running shoe study comes out and is basically described as finally conquering the running injury dilemma. The elusive question and primary focus, “why, with all the technology in shoes today, are the number of running injuries not decreasing?” Every study begins with a theory and then focuses on a single element which is intended to prove that supposition. Then, when it appears in print, everyone takes it as gospel. It is interesting though when talking to podiatrists and physical therapists, that running injuries seem to increase as these new theories are tested by everyday runners. From the desire for more lighter-weight neutral shoes to the barefoot epiphany and on to the minimal craze (which is now beginning to slow down), runners are still finding themselves searching for that magic pill (shoe) that will end their aches and pains. The basic issues with every running shoe study are that they have flawed controls. Take, for instance, the latest one that seemed to “prove” that there is no difference between neutral and stability shoes relative to injury prevention. Some very relative questions for this and any study would be: how far were the participants running?, how experienced were they?, were they in-shape or overweight?, were their needs neutral, stability or motion control?, were the shoes they were using flexible or inflexible?, were they all wearing the same shoes?, and what is the track record of (how well are they selling) the shoes used in the study? Those of us in the industry know, pragmatically speaking, that there are basically three in-need foot-types, neutral, stability and motion control. We know that when identifying the proper shoe and foot supports for a particular runner that we can eliminate most aches, pains and injuries. We know that there are shoes in the same category that do a better job than others. We know that barefoot, on a hard surface, is not natural. We know that lack of cushioning is not natural, and is the primary reason for the “minimal” shoe craze decline, even though low-profile, light-weight cushioned shoes continue to grow at a relatively fast rate. We know the farther you run, the greater the chance of injury. And, if you find a shoe that works, don’t change it. The best running stores can give a runner valid national statistics on just how well a particular shoe, or brand, is selling and how long it has held its position. Runners will continue wearing and highly recommending a shoe that works for them either because it kept them injury free or in helped to eliminate a previous injury. Amazing is why runners remain loyal to a shoe even though they continue having issues while wearing them. The best-selling shoes, over a period of time, are usually those which are best at helping to eliminate running related aches and pains, and I stress, over a period of time. All running shoes are not created equal, just as are not all cars, appliances, tennis racquets, massage therapists or anything for that matter. Ok, back to running shoe studies. Don’t, for your running’s sake, keep jumping on the latest fad. They are usually focusing on only one aspect of biomechanics or shoe mechanics and most of their controls are quite suspect. A result may help one thing but hurt another. It’s not that anyone is trying to pull the wool over our eyes, but that there is not enough information or knowledge out there yet to make these studies valid. Running is multi-dimensional and a lot more complex than anyone can or may want to believe. There is no magic pill. But, if you can find it, there is most likely a magic shoe for you. flraceplace.com

We’ve been in the race game for over 30 years. Like us the brand of Chip Timing equipment we use was first on the scene and considered by most to be the best. We use ChampionChip for triathlons and other sports where a foot or ankle worn system is appropriate. For most running races we use MyLaps which is the chip-in-the bib technology and uses a disposable device attached to the back of the runner’s number. MyLaps was specifically created for use with chip-in-the-bib where the chip is worn above the waist and hence has a better reliability than other such systems. Having so much experience enables us to provide expert consultation on just about any race related matter. We’ve seen every kind of mistake made by race organizations and have often been there to avert disaster. Having been involved in the inner workings of the sports’ governing bodies over the years, we know the rules. Having competed at an award winning level, we know the game from the athlete’s viewpoint. Although, these days, our primary function is data management, timing and scoring we can provide needed equipment such as finish line archways, fencing, large digital clocks, bike racks, course marking signs, PA systems and more. BTW the 2:08:37 on the clock above was the questionable marathon world record until 1981 when Alberto Salazar ran 2:08:13 at New York. One other very important aspect of our race services is a client’s ability to communicate to our super large database of endurance sport participants via a page on our site and email blasts. We can handle any size event in Florida. For more information, contact John Boyle at jboyle@altavistasports.com or 386 736-0002

OUR OWN WORST ENEMY As most of you know, in addition to my hobby of triathlon/announcing races, I am an actively practicing trial attorney who frequently represents one of you when you are hit by a motor vehicle while training. These are difficult cases, for many reasons. I’d like to take a few moments of your time to help educate you how all of you can help when one of your friends is in need. My suggestions include, when riding your bikes on the roads: Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for twenty six years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and currently serves on the national Board of Directors for USA Triathlon as the Florida Region Representative, holding the office of President of the Board. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.

1. Don’t violate drivers’ right of way; it’s dangerous, and they will be on your jury if you are injured and make a claim; 2. Never get into an altercation with a driver; do you ever step back and realize how exposed you are on a bicycle? 3. If at a traffic controlled intersection, NEVER roll through if there are any vehicles present, even going in your lane of traffic; those drivers who are stopped for the light won’t forgive you, and, oh, by the way, see #1 above, they will be on your jury; 4. Always purchase good limits for your uninsured/underinsured motorist’s coverage on your auto insurance; I know I beat this to death, but it is vitally important. Why believe the irresponsible driver who takes you out will be responsible about having adequate insurance? And, by the way, this insurance covers you any time you are injured by a motor vehicle; not just when in your car or on your bike; it also applies if you are struck while jogging/walking! IT’S IMPORTANT. 5. Never do what a group cycling on Gulf Boulevard did during this year’s Madeira Beach Triathlon: curse, yell, and give arm and hand gestures to a police officer trying to keep the race lane clear for triathletes. If you doubt this happened, ask Kerry Sullivan, who was leading the race and had to slow because of the cycling group’s antics, or, better yet, ask Carl Allison, who was in the Sheriff’s vehicle and witnessed this shameful behavior. Mob mentality should not be a part of a safe cyclists’ behavior. Our sport and lifestyle provide many wonderful experiences; we are blessed to be able to participate in these activities in a State that provides year round opportunities. Please be respectful of others, even when some of them are not to us; to do otherwise is to invite at least unpleasantness and at worst catastrophe. Let’s be kind to one another, and enjoy life.

TAMPA BAY RACE COUNCIL
written by Lynn Gray
Dear Race Directors, Organizers and Participants,
The Tampa Bay Race Council is now underway and we would like to share our goals as it relates to the race event community.
* To promote camaraderie, professionalism, and unity among new and existing race directors with the emphasis on helping each other market their race; with the inclusion of assisting with volunteerism whenever possible * To implement a code of ethics among existing and new race directors as it relates to their implementation of road racing and/or other road/triathlon/adventure events * To establish a unified yearly calendar to foster non-duplication of race events as much as possible * To provide programs and services aimed at educating new race directors, such that their event goal is done with the highest amount of success We are now making headway and are currently forming a Board of Directors, written By Laws, and an interactive race calendar. Thus far this month: * The council has decided on putting our logo on all races, which have our complete backing resulting from ethical and professional practices * The council welcomes race directors to join us on Facebook and profit by gaining more race direction knowledge and increase participant sign-up from increased cross marketing * The council is forming an ongoing all inclusive race calendar (online), in hopes of minimizing duplication of events; this will assist participants in the planning of their events in advance * Council meetings will be held monthly alternating between the locations of St. Petersburg and Tampa; this way both sides of the bay are accommodated with the drive. If you are currently a race director or are about ready to become one, be it a road race or a triathlon, feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Lynn Gray President Tampa Bay Race Council

Making the Transition to Obstacle Racing By Pete Williams
O
bstacle races require athletes to have a versatile skill set. The events require strength and endurance, combining running with climbing ropes and walls, carrying logs, and crawling through claustrophobia-inducing tunnels. Since many athletes fall into two camps – distance runners and the anaerobic strengthtraining gym crowd - they often lack the overall fitness to navigate an obstacle course without walking parts of it. Let’s break down some of the most popular training regimens and give you a game plan to address weaknesses so you’ll be ready to dominate any obstacle event.
CROSSFIT ENTHUSIAST
