WE

care

MORE

We have just celebrated our 13th year anniversary in business as The Running Center and have been reflecting on how things are going. As with most small businesses, we have had our ups and downs, but have always tried to function as a successful business and to be a place that treated its customers as we would treat our friends. Seth Godin, author of Tribes and Linchpin, has said that successful specialty stores are so because they “care more” for their customers than do the chain stores or big box stores.

The Running Center sponsors a racing team that has done quite well in the local area. They have won such races as the Gasparilla, the Turkey Trot, Miles for Moffitt and many other races in the Tampa Bay area.We have had a runner qualify for the Olympic Marathon Trials. Our racing team has also been the overall winner in several college meets. We support this group because we want to offer a venue that the after-college runner can belong to and still be able to run at a high level. This team meets on a regular basis for longer runs and track work outs.

We prove we care more by providing the newest and best products for our customers. We also are constantly updating our knowledge on the latest innovations on each new product. I have become a Certified Pedorthist to be able to give more insight into the correction of running injuries and the proper fitting of running shoes. When we see the new updates on shoes we know that some people are “married” to their shoes so we look for ways of helping our customers adjust to the change. Feet are unique to each individual and we base our purchases on what will work the best for our customers. All our employees are active runners and we have them try on each new shoe to understand the fit and feel to make them knowledgeable when selling that product. We all use the products we sell and do not carry any products we do not believe in and feel would be a benefit to our customers.

The Running Center also sponsors local races with monetary donations, gift certificates, numbers, tee shirts or direct involvement, by putting on the race itself. We have collected thousands of pairs of used running shoes for the homeless. We do free clinics for high school and junior high distance runners during the summers. You will see Running Center representatives at health fairs and small business events around the Tampa Bay area. I would like to think we are the only running store in the Tampa Bay area but I know this is not the case. There are several other locally owned running stores which do a good job in their community supporting the sport of running. If they’re in your area, you should support them. We all do “care more” for our customers and prove it everyday. We thank you for your past support of our store and look forward to serving you in the future.

What are you waiting for? Call and make an appointment today to be ready for the season!

A proper fit is essential to take full advantage of all your training. Proper fit equates to more efficiency and comfort which directly relates to more speed. For the month of June only we are offering specials on service and our RETUL fit. Receive a $50 gift card on the purchase of a RETUL 3D motion capture bicycle fit. 18 INTERESTING HEALTH AND NUTRITION “PEARLS” Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, C PED

Following are some pearls based on research studies, personal experience and general information that I’ve come across over the years. They are for informational purposes only and should be used as guidelines for additional investigation. Please consult your doctor if you have any questions or special health concerns. If you can find a homeopathic doctor in your area, he or she may be worth a visit. 1. Weight loss = calories taken in from all foods minus calories expended from all activities. 2. +3,500 calories = 1 pound of weight gain; -3,500 calories = 1 pound weight loss. 3. A 120-130 pound person running 9 min/mile burns about 690 calories per hour. A 170180 pound person running at the same pace burns about 960 calories per hour. 4. Increased speed, running hills and higher heat and humidity levels increases caloric burn. 5. To lose weight the average woman’s daily caloric intake goal should = 1,200; the average man’s, 1,400. These are based on consuming healthy nutritionally-dense foods. Very active individuals will need more. 6. Nutritionally-dense foods do not include calories consumed from white carbohydrates such as sugar, pasta, potatoes, rice and bread. Try to limit your intake of these. Whole grains are better. Instead of wheat, try oats, rye and more unheard of grains such as quinoa, spelt, barley, lentils and kasha. 7. Try to eat 5 different colors of foods each day – red, purple, yellow, green and orange. 8. Raw foods contain enzymes which are very important to the digestion process. Cooking foods above 110 degrees Fahrenheit destroys enzymes and some vitamins. Boiling foods causes mineral loss into the water. Alternatively, try light steaming or stir-frying. 9. It is said that many of our common foods contain only 20% of the nutrition that they did 100 years ago. Eat organic as often as possible for added nutrition and to help eliminate pesticide ingestion. As there are varying measures of organic, foods marked with the seal “USDA Organic” are the most safe and nutritious. 10. Red meat has vitamins that are not found in any other food source. 11. A good whole-food multi-vitamin, each day, is probably a good idea. 12. Beans and peas (legumes) are excellent sources of protein and fiber. Have some every day. Enzymes such as “Beano” should ease any related gas issue. 13. Have a handful of nuts and seeds every day, adding additional protein, fiber and nutrients to your diet. 14. Eaten whole (hard-boiled, poached or sunny-side up), the egg is one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. There is no research showing that eggs raise cholesterol levels. Just to be safe, some scientists still recommend moderation when consuming eggs (2-3/day). 15. Pasteurized and homogenized milk is being questioned as to how good a food source it really is. One study suggests that it may actually be involved in decreasing bone density. 16. Alfalfa supplements may be helpful in alleviating plantar fascitis and other tendon and joint issues. It is suggested that one reason is its natural anti-inflammatory properties. 17. Knowing the signs of stroke can get a person medical help sooner (within hours) and save them from years of debilitation. Ask them to smile; raise both arms; say a simple sentence coherently, like “chicken soup”; and stick their tongue out – if it’s twisted suspect a stroke. If the person lacks the ability to do any of these tasks, get them immediate attention. 18. Important sports energy drinks and nutrition help maintain your energy and performance level by replenishing your immediate energy and metabolic needs, with minimal added calories. flraceplace.com

Responsibilities of a triathlete:

Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for twenty six years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and currently serves on the national Board of Directors for USA Triathlon as the Florida Region Representative, holding the office of President of the Board. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.

July/August

Did you know there are people who volunteer at most of the area races you compete/participate in on the Suncoast who are not triathletes, who don’t get paid, and without whom you could not race? We triathletes are such a driven group with our training and racing goals driving our activity that we seldom stop to think about not racing, and about volunteering at an event so others can race. I’ve had many athletes over the years look surprised when asked if they were volunteering at a race they were not doing. Normally, the answer goes something like this: “gosh, no, I’m not; I have to train.” Please make a commitment to give back to your sport, to your hobby, to your passion. No race, however successful, cannot survive without competent volunteers. Every triathlete should volunteer when not racing; not only to help a race, but to see the process from another perspective. Even if you’re working a water stop, you’ll learn something positive, and be able to encourage other athletes in their own goal setting experiences. I would suggest volunteer for early morning duty, and post race breakdown; you’ll then have a full appreciation for what race organizers go through for your safety and enjoyment. If you have a kayak, volunteer to assist Darry Jackson’t crew; they are invaluable to your safety on the water. Better yet, if you are a stand up paddle boarder, those provide wonderful views of the water chaos that is the swim portion of the race. Finally, if you, like most of us, have reached a point where you don’t feel like racing quite as much, but want to remain a part of the lifestyle, give serious consideration to becoming certified as a USAT official. We have a good number of wonderful officials who work hard to make your triathlon experience a safe and fair one; but with our sport, especially in Florida, continuing to add races, there is a great need for more officials. In closing, the words of the day are: GIVE BACK TO YOUR SPORT! See you at the races! Brian Harrington, Race Announcer, Immediate Past President, Current board member, USAT Representing the Florida Region 49

HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN OBSTACLE RACE

O

By Pete Williams

bstacle races have exploded in popularity in the last 18 months. National races like Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, and Warrior Dash, along with popular Florida-based races such as Savage Race and The Highlander, require athletes to display both strength and endurance as they navigate obstacles spread out over courses ranging from 3 to 12 miles. That combination can be a challenge for many athletes. Most runners have no problem completing the distance, but often lack the strength to handle the challenges. Many anaerobic athletes breeze through the challenges, but struggle with distance running. Here are some strategies for not just surviving but thriving in an obstacle mud run:

1. Train Like You Will Race

One of the attractions of obstacle races is the unexpected. Athletes never know what kind of challenge waits at the next turn. But chances are it’s something that will require an effort of pushing or pulling after running between a half-mile and two miles. That’s why Darcy Norman, a performance specialist at Athletes’ Performance in Phoenix, recommends beginning with a circuit that could include 400 meters of running, 10 pull-ups, and 20 push-ups. “See how many circuits you can perform in 15 minutes,” Norman says. “Just make sure you’re not sacrificing quality for quantity.”

distance runners. That’s why distance running should be part of the training equation. “You need that aerobic base to be able to repeat this effort over and over,” Norman says. “Some endurance runners go long and slow so much that they need to do more intervals, whereas your anaerobic athletes need to do some long and slow stuff. You need both.” Check out miCoach.com for cardio plans for various race distances.

2. Work Up to Race Distance

Anyone who has trained for a marathon knows the importance of working up to where you can do a run of 18-to-20 miles, if not longer. With obstacle races, the challenge is to simulate race conditions with training sessions that last as long as the race itself. A 3-mile obstacle race takes many athletes just 40 minutes to an hour. A longer version of the circuits described above can be sufficient for training. But a race like the 13-mile Tough Mudder requires a longer regimen. Eric Stratman, owner of The Next Level training center in Tampa, prepares athletes for the Tough Mudder by putting them through progressively longer sessions. One 75-minute circuit includes a 2-mile run followed by rope climbs, another 800-meter run, pushing a “Prowler” weight sled 200 meters, another 800-meter run, various 200- and 400- meter runs (backward, lateral shuffle), tire tossing, a 200-meter “farmer’s carry” of 45-pound weight plates, and a whopping 50 Burpees. “Tough Mudder is not a race your average athlete can show up to and hope to complete,” Stratman says. “The obstacles will be too much. You have to train accordingly.”

4. Get Uncomfortable

Obstacle races are known for making athletes uncomfortable, whether it’s crawling commando-style under barbwire through mud or navigating through icy water obstacles. Laurel Blackburn, who trains athletes for the notorious Spartan Death Race, the annual Vermont event that can go on for days, will have clients pull heavy rocks up from the bottom of her cold swimming pool. She’s also had them crawl on their bellies across a field and then hosed them with cold water. “People have an aversion to being cold and dirty but you have to get over it,” Blackburn says. “The more you can simulate actual race conditions, the better prepared you’re going to be.” Pete Williams is a NASM-certified personal trainer, the editor of www.endurancesportsflorida. com, and the host of The Fitness Buff Radio Show (www.fitnessbuffshow.com). He provides fitness segments on Sunday mornings on ABC Action News in Tampa Bay. Look for his latest book, The Obstacle Race Training Guide, later this summer.

3. Don’t Forget Distance

Many athletes accustomed to the high-intensity, anaerobic training of CrossFit and similar programs lack the aerobic base of photos courtesy of Savage Race
