November/December

should wear a little better, and the crash pad in the rear of the shoe works better. The overall fit should be the same and the performance you loved is still there. Price of the Adrenaline 12 is going to $110.

TIME FOR AN

UPDATE

The shoe that the Adrenaline knocked out of first place was the Asics 2160. This model has always been a great shoe with a very strong following. If this is your shoe, expect a little change. The weight is going from 11.7 oz to 11.4 oz, (all weights given are for a men’s size 9.5) so you probably won’t notice the difference, but you might notice that the eyelet configuration is different and that will change the fit. The 2170 is still a great performance shoe and it should be a very close version of the 2160. Price of the 2170 will be $110. Nike’s Structure 15 has no major changes and should fit, feel and perform just like the model 14. Nike is still using airbag and fly wire technology in these shoes so they should continue to be great running shoes. The price of the Structure 15 is at $100. Saucony Guide is going through the biggest changes of any of these shoes. The weight is going from 11.6 oz to 10.2 oz which is a feature you will feel, and the Guide 5 will go to an 8mm off set. This means that the heel of the shoe will drop dramatically versus the Guide 4 version. Saucony is taking a major risk with reducing the weight and height of their best selling stability shoe but I think most runners will like the changes. The price of the Guide 5 will be $100.

The Brooks Adrenaline, Asics 2160, Nike Structure and the Saucony Guide are all going through updates and they will be out sometime in November. I have said many times: “Don’t get married to your shoes because what you love about your shoe could change!” Some of the updates on these shoes are quite dramatic, so you will have to run in them to make sure they still work for you.

Some brand new shoes have been introduced by these companies and they deserve to be considered. Brooks has the new Pure shoes, Asics has the 33 series, Nike has the Free series and Saucony has the Kinvara/ Mirage models. All of these new shoes are light weight and bio-efficient or minimalist in their performance. These companies have set the standards for years on quality and performance and with these new models they can offer you just about every option you are looking for in a running shoe.

This year’s best selling running shoe in specialty stores has been the Brooks Adrenaline 11. Many of you loved the Adrenaline 11 and with the changes in model 12, you should still find the new Adrenaline your favorite shoe. The mesh is more breathable; the heel

And, the listed "potential remedies" seem to be some the more common "first response" aids to help alleviate these issues. Brooks' shoe mechanics are unparalleled and the result of being the sole company designing only running shoes. Brooks' exceptional flexibility is a very important key to their injury prevention characteristics. You can find numerous Brooks innovations in every running shoe produced today. TIME TO REFLECT; REVITALIZE; AND RENEW

Yes, you’ve reached the end of another active season of multisport training and competition. Hopefully, there have been many PR’s; many times of pride and accomplishment; many opportunities to meet and train with new friends with similar life outlooks; and few instances of injury. Now is the time to look back on your accomplishments, to see where you reached your goals, and, if not, how to improve on reaching them in 2012. Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for twenty six years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and currently serves on the national Board of Directors for USA Triathlon as the Florida Region Representative, holding the office of President of the Board. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.

Now is the time for some well deserved rest; ratcheting down of mileage and early morning wakeups; time to revitalize, to allow your body to recover; to allow your family to rightfully demand your full time involvement. Now is the time to begin planning what your 2012 goals should be; how you can not only improve your athletic performances; but also, how you can work to make yourself a better person, a better citizen, a better performer on the stage of life. Some suggestions: renew your commitment, for you and your family, to the healthy lifestyle. Make the decision to not only race/compete next year, but to get a family member, or friend to begin living this great lifestyle we have. Make a commitment to work at least one race/event as a volunteer; many of us race often; few of us give back so other’s can do the same. Get involved in the governance of your sport; as a race official; as an elected member of USAT Florida Region; as a member of the Board of your local triathlon club; as a member who participates in a committee of USAT. We need more women in governance at all levels. Women make up nearly 50% of USAT membership; but as of January 1, 2012, there will be NO elected female member on the USAT national Board of Directors. Ladies: start somewhere. My wife, a non triathlete, but a successful businesswoman, has chaired the USAT Women’s committee, and she has to beg women to be involved. That’s not right; and it’s not good for our sport. It is important to have new blood in leadership. I have had the pleasure of serving as your representative on the USAT Board; I don’t plan to be there forever (and term limits would preclude it even if I did J). Where’s the female Florida Region triathlete/multisport person who will want to replace me on this board? I know you’re out there. Let me hear from you if you’re interested. Be safe, have a wonderful holiday season; we’ll see you at the races in 2012.

Brian Harrington, Race Announcer, Immediate Past President, Current board member, USAT Representing the Florida Region November/December

Saucony Triumph 9___ $129.99

Asics 2170_________ $109.99

Leading the way in the 8mm revolution is the Saucony Triumph 9, and the 8mm heeltoe drop is not the only change with this dramatic update. In addition to the 8mm platform differential, the Triumph 9 swaps out ProGrid cushioning in favor of PowerGrid with PowerFoam, which is being introduced in the new Saucony Cortana (July 2011). The advantages of the technology shift are reduced weight and a softer yet responsive feel. Furthermore, the Triumph 9 moves to an injected molded foam construction that further reduces weight and increase softness. While these changes may alienate some of the current Triumph loyalists, this is not the first time the Triumph has undergone radical changes. Saucony reinvented themselves with a very fresh and polarizing Triumph 4, that was lighter, softer and more colorful than previous models. The change resulted in a hugely popular shoe that changed the look of future Saucony

Discrete Eyelets To compliment the lighter weight design, the upper now features Discrete Eyelets for a more uniform pull when the laces are tightened; creating an improved personalized upper fit. This series of individual eyestays allow the shoe to move with the foot more effectively while providing a great fit over the instep, as well as a decreased potential for irritation. Large GEL® Cushioning System ASICS takes great pride in its GEL Cushioning System and this year’s GT-2170 receives the largest GEL® unit in the GT2000™ series to date. This one piece GEL® heel unit has been designed with a sculpted shape to optimize cushioning. Full-Length Guidance Line® Combine the largest series GEL® Cushioning System with a Full Length Guidance Line® extending from the heel to the forefoot and you’ve got a super cushioned ride, perfect for helping the foot move properly through its natural path of progression.

shoes. Over the years, the Triumph has crept up in weight and firmness and thus has had hard time competing in the premium neutralcushion category. With the Triumph 9, Saucony becomes relevant

Five Recovery Secrets of Endurance Athletes

W

By PETE WILLIAMS

hen it comes to recovery strategies, endurance athletes are a notoriously stubborn bunch, preferring to push forward with tough workouts day after day. While such a work ethic is admirable, it’s impossible

to go all-out all the time. You won’t train as effectively and you’ll likely break down with injuries and ailments. On the other hand, if you can focus on having high-quality rest and regeneration, you’ll be able to get more return on investment from every minute of your workout. Regeneration increases your energy, boosts your immune system, and helps you get the most out of each training session, which ultimately will improve your performance. Regeneration improves your hormone profile, decreases inflammation, and improves tissue quality, thus decreasing the number of overuse injuries you may experience. Here are five recovery secrets of endurance athletes:

1. Get More Sleep Getting adequate sleep is the easiest way to boost endurance performance. It’s crucial to maximize deep, restorative sleep time, which happens in the first few hours of sleep each night. Though butterflies and adrenaline can contribute to an uneasy night of pre-race sleep—especially when you’ve set the alarm for 3:30—it’s important to make adequate sleep a regular part of your lifestyle. Need more incentive? Charlie Futrell, a Florida resident who still is doing triathlons at 91, attributes his race longevity in part to going to bed at 9:30 and waking at 7. That’s unrealistic for most working adults, but there’s no doubt most of us should make time for more sleep. 2. Recover with Nutrition Nutrition is a key part of recovery. Many athletes gather their gear or head for the beer tent immediately after a running event or triathlon. Be sure first to take advantage of that 30-minute post-race recovery period when your body is craving nutrients to replenish itself. “Give your body what it needs when it’s most open and able to absorb it,” says pro endurance guru Jessi Stensland. It’s ideal to consume a shake, energy bar, piece of fruit, and/or sports drink immediately following a workout or race. Do this before anything else. The food or supplement you choose should provide about 0.8 gram of carbs per kilogram of body weight and 0.4 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight. 3. Re-hydrate It’s impossible not to want water following a race or workout, and you should drink two cups for every pound lost during exercise. But you can jumpstart your recovery and optimize performance by staying hydrated throughout the day. Keep a water bottle with

you all day. Drink ½ to 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day to stay hydrated. Keep an eye on your urine color. It should be clear. If not, drink more water. 4. Get a Massage Ideally, we’d get professional massages immediately after every race or tough training session. Since that’s not usually practical or affordable, do some self-massage with a foam or tennis ball. Cold plunges also are an effective way to jumpstart recovery. Lynn Gray, a Tampa-based running coach, combines both using washcloths dunked in ice water. “Giving yourself a massage and using some ice water really accelerates recovery and keeps you from waking up tight and sore the next day,” Gray says. 5. Stretch it Out Active-isolate stretching, developed by Aaron Mattes, is a great way to recover postworkout. Take an 8-to-10 foot length of rope, about the thickness of jump rope, and wrap it around one foot at a time. You can perform a series of moves that will reprogram your muscles to contract and relax through new ranges of motion. Use the rope to gently assist the muscle’s range of motion about 10 to 20 percent farther than your body would ordinarily allow.

Fitness journalist Pete Williams is the creator of EnduranceSportsFlorida.com and the co-author of Mark Verstegen’s Core Performance book series. His new video book Paddle Fit, created with stand-up paddleboard guru Brody Welte on the multimedia “Vook” platform, is now available at iTunes and vook.com.
