Dear Staff, Parents and Students, ‘Built to Last’ might have been a popular mantra but ‘Build to Adapt’ is the way to go. At the start of 2021, we took the teachings of The Choluteca Bridge (The Bridge of The Rising Sun) and focused on the need to build a school that can adapt to change.

As Headmaster I am conscious of the great honour it is to take responsibility for your child’s education and, working alongside an extraordinary team of staff, we are totally committed to helping each of our students to achieve their academic and personal goals.

We believe that education is the foundation upon which a compassionate, successful, and forward-thinking society is built and that our duty as educators in today’s constantly changing world is to prepare our students to face global challenges with the intellectual skill and personal confidence necessary to succeed. We adhere to and promote St Peter’s College vision; “Empowering Students for Life”.

However, I wanted to start by thanking you all as parents and carers for your fantastic support over the last 18 months. I am particularly appreciative for everything that you have been doing to support learning from home when the need arose.

I know how difficult it is to juggle working from home with supporting your own children with their schooling, and this is of course in addition to dealing with all the normal challenges of family life. The College has also received several messages of thanks and support from so many of you over these past few months, and these are all received very gratefully indeed.

I would like to thank once again all the teaching staff who have continued to work exceptionally hard to ensure that our students are able to continue with their studies. I hope that your children have found accessing the work via the Teams platform to be straight-forward and helpful. As said previously, although nothing can replace the impact of students being in school to receive the direct instruction and immediate feedback from their teachers, the use of the Teams platform has enabled us to provide the students with the next best thing.

Over the course of the last three months, the College has quite literally sprung into life. A few days of warming temperatures with a little sunshine have banished memories

CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT On the back of these confident predictions, the St Peter’s College Council granted authorisation to move to the next stage of planning and preparation for an exciting new capital development, the first significant investment in our academic infrastructure since the onset of COVID-19 in 2020.

The building of our new state of the art Maths Centre has already begun in earnest next to the Administration Block to meet the demand for the growth in student numbers.

Further expansion to the infrastructure of our school, is the Indoor Basketball and Multipurpose Hall to accommodate the growth in student numbers, as well as the popularity of basketball at St Peter’s College. We look forward to the development and success that this hall will bring for sports and recreation at the College, for which building will commence in January 2021. Besides the Maths and Basketball Centre, there are a number of exciting projects that are still in the pipeline, such as the swimming pool and squash courts.

The K60 extension is finally becoming a reality. The K60 is a 4 lane freeway that will bypass the school linking the end of Van Der Bijl Rd in Sunninghill to Allendale Rd in the North by way of spanning the N1, K101 (Old Pretoria Rd) and the Jukskei River. This freeway build contract is due to be awarded imminently with site mobilisation planned for before the end of the year and will take 18 months to build.

STAFF MATTERS Each term brings positive change. This includes a few additions to our staff:

VISUAL ARTS Juanita Viegas joins the Visual Arts department in place of Alex Trapani. We have been very fortunate that Alex extended his resignation to the end of 2021 to allow us to appoint the right candidate.

SOCIAL SCIENCE Kevin McCarthy was on a teaching practical at St Peter’s College in Term 3 and has been appointed to teach Social Sciences in the place of Tebogo Maneli.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Nontobeko Sangweni returns to the St Peter’s College IT department after a stint at Reddam Helderfontein.

AFRIKAANS Rose Koffman was appointed as an Afrikaans teacher to meet the growth in the College numbers. Rose joins us from The Hill High School.

SOCIAL SCIENCE & LO Aamir Samaai is a teacher at Curro in Krugersdorp who will be teaching History and LO ACCOUNTING Shelley Elias joins the Business Studies team and will be teaching Accounting.

SCHOOL SHOP Cath Dracatos replaces Nerina Deeb who retired at the end of October 2021 after 14 years of dedicated service. Cath has stepped down from her role as HOD of Business Studies.

HOD OF BUSINESS STUDIES Vuyelwa Kekana replaces Cath Dracatos as Head of Department.

BUSINESS STUDIES Alumnus Victor Hiemstra has resigned to go back into full time studies, and he will be replaced by Marsha Webber who is returning to South Africa after teaching at an international school in Chile.

MATHEMATICS Evelyn Naidoo joins the Maths department to replace Leslie Reddy who is moving to Steyn City School.

GRADE HEAD ASSISTANTS Congratulations to Dylan Hayes (Grade 8) and Daya Lutchman (Grade 12) who have been appointed as Grade Head assistants.

SPORT We say farewell to Michael Backus who has been an integral part of the sports department for over a decade as he is emigrating to the UK. Alumnus Matthew Amner and Coach Samantha Mposi will be joining the sports team in 2021.

I strongly believe that instilling values such as hard work, selfdiscipline, and a sense of responsibility within a positive and forward-thinking working environment plays an essential role in our quest to provide our students with a well-balanced, integrated education. Our curriculum is based upon an innovative teaching and learning methodology which, inter alia, focuses on developing fluency and confidence in the academic sphere, promotes a wide range of co-curricular subjects including Music, Sport and the Arts and incorporates cutting-edge technologies. This broad and balanced approach is underpinned by continual reinforcement of our core values and principles, which we believe to be fundamental to the education of compassionate, well-educated, motivated, and responsible young adults.

ISIZULU Nelisiwe Msomi will come into a full time IsiZulu post to replace Zandile Dube who retires at the end of 2021. Zandile was in a part time post but due to the growth in the College numbers and in students taking IsiZulu as a subject, we needed to appoint a teacher in a full-time capacity.

of winter, encouraging us all to be increasingly optimistic about the future. When planning for the 2023 academic year, with the launch of our move towards a sense of “normality”, I am delighted to be able to report that the news is mostly extremely positive. Due to popular demand, we have opened another class in the Grade 8 group to meet the demand for places at St Peter’s College. With this healthy interest at all points of entry, including Grade 9-11, there is every expectation that the College will receive its biggest contingent of new students in its history when we open for the 2022 Academic year in January.

As we now approach the end of what has been a rather strange year, and in view of the recent announcements from President Cyril Ramaphosa pertaining to the latest COVID-19 variant, Omicron, I focus on a message a fellow Head wrote to parents with children at her school to highlight that ‘times are tough at the moment’, with ‘our mental health taking a battering’ and praising parents for what they are doing to get by. She said: “Whatever your personal circumstances, you are doing a great job. If your child has had lots of microwave meals, stayed up too late, played too much on the Xbox and not finished all their schoolwork, THAT’S OK!” I am very mindful that these continue to be unsettling and difficult times for students, staff, and parents. However, through working together so positively over these recent months we have demonstrated just how much can be achieved within such a cohesive, assured, caring and supportive community such as ours, and from this we should continue to draw much strength.

As mentioned in my previous communication: “It remains our policy to take a calm and considered approach, as we respond to this unfolding challenge. We are committed to being proactive and we will communicate all planning with the College community. The past few days has again seen an escalation in the spread of the virus, both in South Africa and around the world. I know that you will all understand that the objective remains the health and safety of our students and staff, in line with the advice and guidance of the relevant authorities. As further decisions are taken by the Government, we will continue to keep you informed of our plans and strategies as promptly as possible. These are very

uncertain times, with an unclear roadmap, the next step is for us to implement the plans as best we can, and constantly evaluate our deliverables against the milestones we set and have the courage to course correct when required. The 2022 academic year could be affected, but we will do our best to ensure that your child’s education is interrupted as little as possible for the remainder of the year. I wish to extend my sincere thanks to you as parents, the staff and the students for your co-operation.

In conclusion, I thought I would mention the developing educational debate concerning ‘resilience’, about which there has been a great deal written in the press. There appears to be general evidence that reliance on mobile and email contact, an increasingly ‘cotton-wool’ lifestyle and a heightened aversion by society to appropriate risk, have all meant that modern teenagers are less resilient and robust in the face of real pressure and challenge than they used to be. That notwithstanding, I am not at all sure that our students conform to this stereotype. Here at St Peter’s College we will continue to strive to provide opportunities for boys and girls to test themselves, both as individuals and against others, through healthy competition and to increase confidence by involvement in a wide range of activities. A strong community such as ours can offer the encouragement to ‘put one’s head above the parapet’ and ‘have a go’, overcoming the fear of failure that can stifle creativity and limit the acceptance of responsibility.

Finally, it’s my hope and prayer that you enjoy this festive season with all the love, peace, and fun there is in the world.

Chair College Council The College was once again impacted by the effects of Covid-19 in 2021, and, once again, as it did in 2020, the College managed this admirably. The Council has been extremely grateful to Rui Morais and the team for the way they have risen to the challenge. The pandemic has not been easy on them, but they have continued to give all our students the best education in the circumstances.

Unfortunately, there have been some unavoidable drawbacks, especially in co-curricular activities, because of regulations. While this was not by choice, we regret not given the full Saint Peter’s experience this year. We have tried to address this financially, but, the reality is, 2021 is in the past and what students missed out cannot simply caught up on.

• The bonds that students make often last lifetimes. Virtual meetings do not allow for this.

• The experiences outside of the curricula and outside of classrooms, sharing some of the challenges being teenagers in these times, are not had by sticking to the syllabus or timetable. They just happen when students meet up.

• Sports, drama and music performances, art exhibitions and poetry recitations are all driven by spectators who drive athletes and artists to greater heights, when they hear applause and praise – and when their peers force the very best out of them.

• The challenges youth face today include the negatives of social media, fake news, cancel culture and so on. Grounding from educators, counsellors and chaplains gives perspective and insight.

This is not to downplay the difficulties of 2021; this is to reinforce what Saint Peter’s has always offered. Parents who believe in these are investing in them and our communities. No pandemic will change these and the College has just cemented its position of offering this. While the educational environment is changing, we believe basics will not.

Thank you to all who shared this vision in 2021 and made it a success – students, staff, parents and (more personally for me) the Council members, who have unselfishly contributed so much too.

School Chaplain and Head of Transformation at St Peter’s College, Reverend Kabelo Motlhakane, is unique amongst his fellow specialists in transformation and belonging, as possibly the only ordained priest that holds both callings.

St Peter’s espouses Anglican Christian values in every facet of its activities and promotes a deep-seated culture of respect across colour, creed and background as outlined in the school’s Mission statement and core values of respect, honour, compassion, collaboration, resilience and responsibility.

Reverend Kabelo’s role reinforces this approach as he serves both as the school’s spiritual leader and as a consciousness for all matters relating to the intersectional nature of race, religion, sexuality, gender, and other social differentiators. On an overarching level, he aims to ensure that all who enter the St Peter’s College Campus feel safe, heard, seen and appreciated.

“My role is integral to how individuals, especially those who belong to marginalised groups (both historically and contextually), interact with the school’s content and the symbols and culture the school embodies, “ he says. “As an ordained Anglican priest, my departure point for the work of transformation and belonging is always from the perspective that Jesus is an active liberator and one that finds common ground in spaces of great conflict.

The Grade Pastoral Care Team comprises of five Grade Heads, five Grade Heads Assistants and two Educational Psychologists; all of whom are focused on meeting the emotional, physical and academic needs of the students. The student programme is designed to value the unique contribution of each individual. Towards that end, pastoral and academic staff collaborate in nurturing confidence and maturity in an atmosphere of opportunity and enquiry, and through excellent structures of care.

Brian’s career success revolves around his ability to relate to young people and forge strong relationships with students, staff and parents built on trust. His knowledge of the education environment and insight into current familial and socio-economic pressures make him particularly effective in his role.

He believes that in an ever-changing world, young people must embody values that will enable them to thrive within diverse communities. At St Peter’s, the core values are Relationships, Respect, Responsibility and Resilience and students are encouraged to live these values in every aspect of their lives.

The Pastoral Care team oversees many necessary aspects of school life that contribute to the social and emotional well-being of the students under their care. Their goal is to develop young people with vision, energy, and enterprise; who are not afraid of hard work, who value teamwork, and who bear the good of the greater community in mind at all times.

Brian Armitage has an in-depth understanding of, and unwavering belief in, the holistic programme on offer at St Peter’s College. His 26 years of teaching Mathematics, Technical Subjects and Mathematical Literacy, coupled with extensive managerial experience as Head of Department, Grade Head and Head of Co-Curricular have prepared him well for his role as Deputy Headmaster, Student Affairs. At St Peter’s, the role of Deputy Headmaster includes managing the Pastoral Care Team and overseeing the Student Programme in line with the overall strategic plan and objectives of the executive committee.

Rui’s exceptional interpersonal and communication skills ensure that he naturally develops a strong rapport with others while developing curriculum and management strategy. Yet, these relationships often extend beyond traditional business interaction. His reputation as a motivational and inspirational team player is well-founded, and he finds fulfilment in coaching and empowering others towards fulfilling their potential and making a positive contribution to the achievement of their personal objectives.

As a competent strategist, Rui has also proven his ability to influence policy and developments with direct and positive impact on education and learning. Coupled with his strong planning capabilities, this characteristic provides clear direction for the future of St Peter’s College, taking into consideration all aspects involved in increasing establishment ranking.

A qualified Chartered Accountant with a strong background in the audit, advisory and financial services industry, Ndivhuwo Nengovhela fulfilled the role of Executive Finance Manager at St Peter’s Prep School for four years before joining St Peter’s College as Senior Finance Manager in September 2021.

Ndivhuwo’s career success is built around her ability to continuously create organisational value across various fast-paced environments. That characteristic, combined with in-depth knowledge and skills of technical and industry elements, provides the perfect foundation for managing the St Peter’s College Finances.

At St Peter’s, the role of Senior Finance Manager is to navigate the College through the finance, governance, risk management and systems landscape towards financial sustainability and growth.

However, together with overall financial oversight and risk mitigation aspects, come significant Business Management responsibilities. As part of the Senior Executive team involved in developing and implementing the strategic direction for the College, Ndivhuwo’s contribution includes scoping and proposing optimal organisational business structure and the planning, accessing, negotiation and implementation of the most appropriate capital structure and debt funding.

Her proficiency in driving seamless operations and rapidly assessing and fulfilling requirements has informed her career journey thus far and now benefits the College’s financial team. Ndivhuwo describes her professional and personal outlook with a quote by Tony Robbins; “Only those who have learned the power of sincere and selfless contribution, experience life’s deepest joy: true fulfilment.”

Senior Finance Manager

One of the strongest testimonies to the value and integrity of St Peter’s is the enduring relationships that so many of its employees have with the institution, and their unwavering dedication to furthering its goals.

However, when St Peter’s call to take up the position of professional assistant came in 2015, she took on the challenge with enthusiasm. The rest, as they say, is history! Her ongoing commitment and talent led to Lynda taking up the reins in Operations in 2020, where the portfolio encompasses the planning, directing, coordinating, and overseeing of all operations, including oversight of the building and assets maintenance staff, drivers, security services and various outsourced service providers, including grounds and cleaning teams. In keeping with the school’s ethos, Lynda’s role focuses predominantly on the day-to-day activities that create a safe, clean environment in which staff and learners can perform to their maximum.

As a member of the Executive, Lynda also scopes out the College infrastructure into the future to ensure that the College community continues to have a clean, well-maintained and safe campus in which to realise their potential.

EXECUTIVE MEMBERS

St Peter’s Operations Manager, Lynda Kirkland, is yet another example in a string of long-term connections between the College and its staff members. Her first engagement with St Peter’s College took place way back in its founding days when Lynda’s son, Mathew Kirkland, was one of the College’s founding students and her initial voluntary work at the school shop, led to her appointment as Personal Assistant to former St Peter’s Rector, Mr. Greg Royce. She continued to work with several school heads until family commitments saw her relocating to Port Alfred, where she owned and managed a successful gym for a few years.

Shelly Matthews has a teaching career that spans over 20 years, more than 10 of which have been spent at St Peter’s College, where as Deputy Head of Academic, her role is integral to the institution’s offering of a relevant yet diverse education in a co-educational environment.

St Peter’s approach is focused on preparing young people holistically and guiding their future according to their strengths and interests rather than concentrating solely on Academic achievements. Shelly’s own passion for continuous development is perfectly aligned with that of the College. She studied teaching, taught for 10 years in an HOD role at Sacred Heart College before returning to Wits University to complete her honours degree in Education. The importance of lifelong learning is one of the fundamental messages that she and her team try to impart to their students on a daily basis.

St Peter’s graduates go on to attend both local and international universities and the school itself boasts a 100% pass rate with around a 90% rate of university passes. The education they receive at the College prepares them well for the challenges of tertiary education and a healthy number make the Dean’s list or receive high-level scholarships.

The academic team encourages St Peter’s students to be the change they would like to see in the world, and strive to provide them with a healthy learning foundation to help them become these agents of change. Nelson Mandela’s words of wisdom, encapsulate Shelly’s own philosophy around learning: “Education is the most lethal weapon, because with it you can change the world.”

A natural passion for sustainable development, youth and leadership development has positioned Nosipho as a mentor and coach within her community, where she facilitates access to entrepreneurship, higher education and skills development. This is a drive that underpins her work at the College as well, where her role is to build high impact strategies around inclusivity and diversity, while nurturing the talent and potential of scholars and teams alike, as outlined in the institution’s vision.

Nosipho’s career history includes a diverse training ground in marketing and communication, programme management, business development, fundraising and coaching. Add to that her 14 years in public relations and communication working within the education and NGO sectors and you have a recipe for marketing success.

At the heart of her personal philosophy is a strong belief that the child must be at the centre of all that education does and aspires to be. “At the heart of education, is the future of all nations.”

Nosipho is focused on utilising St Peter’s marketing campaigns as a medium through which to grow an ever-expanding pool of young leaders and advance St Peter’s relationships with stakeholders across multiple disciplines.

St Peter’s Human Resources Manager, Toni Batchelor, graduated Cum Laude from her Master’s degree in Industrial Psychology, at the University of Witwatersrand. She is also registered with the Health Professionals Council as an Industrial Psychologist (PS 0147931). At St Peter’s, the role of HR Manager is to provide effective HR support to the school with an emphasis on HR initiatives that address the value of relationships and optimise performance in the context of the College’s business functions.

Toni’s ability to realise the benefits of healthy working relationships, combined with in-depth knowledge and skills of Human Resource Management; Labour Relations; Talent Management and Psychometrics is at the heart of her career success and contribution to the College.

NOSIPHO NKOSI

Nosipho Nkosi heads up the Marketing, Alumni & Admissions portfolio at St Peter’s College, as executive team lead. This portfolio contributes both strategically and operationally to the growth and positioning of St Peter’s College by ensuring that the College remains a strong, recognisable and engaging brand that lives out its values. Under her leadership, the St Peter’s brand continues to be recognised as one of the leading independent schools in South Africa.

Practical exposure to a variety of functional sections during an early internship role at Shine, (a niche consultancy focused on improving performance and reducing stress in the workplace, through enabling healthy relationships) laid a strong foundation of workable knowledge and competency across her various areas of practice.

Now, as part of the Senior Executive team at St Peter’s, Toni is involved in developing and fulfilling the strategic goals of the College by effecting Human Relations aspects that harness optimal organisational potential.

Toni believes that investing in ALL personnel makes the organisation functionally more effective, because through working together, everyone achieves more. The phrase “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts” first coined by the philosopher Aristotle, sums up her approach to the HR function at St Peter’s!

I am also quite present in the college life. This has afforded me the opportunity to build relationships in different situations, i.e. the classroom, the courts and relationships are the key to success. As the African proverb goes

Head Boy My journey at St. Peter’s College has been one like no other.

From shouting my lungs out and going crazy with my friends at every single rugby derby day, to dunking the basketball hoop and making the crowd go wild. The college has really given us students the opportunity to pursue our interest and further grow our passion in the activities we enjoy.

Soirée nights, the drumline’s vibe and dancing in the MADD center all uplifted my spirits when things got tough and there were quite a few of those days.

Connections were made between students of all grades and memories were engraved that will never be forgotten.

Whether they were older or younger, getting to know new faces was exciting and receiving help to get where I am was even better. From academic support, to tips on the the court, I have always had the college family to rely on. I can truly say that my high school career was the best time of my life.

The 4 core values were the anchors of my development as a student. I am a student athlete and with that came the responsibility of having to balance both school and sports making sure to give my best in each. Experiencing the hardships of being a hard worker and not reaching my goal on the first attempt taught me resilience to come back even harder than before. The journey of moving from being a junior to a senior student taught me the importance of respect and how it is fundamental aspect of all relationships both among peers and staff.

Over the years, I have learned that what makes St Peter’s unique is the passion and commitment that the teachers and coaches have for what they do, whether it’s an early morning sports practice underneath the floodlights or an extra online lesson over the weekend - their dedication is unwavering.

I am beyond honoured to be appointed as Head Girl for 2021, a dream that has finally come true and an incredible opportunity to represent each amazing student at the school.

When I joined the College in Grade 8, I knew instantly that this was my second home. St Peter’s College has everything on offer, from exceptional sport and cultural facilities to excellent academics; however, what sets it apart from every other school is the unspoken bond that we have with each other. We are all connected by the respect and care we share for one another, and the love and pride we have for our school. When we win on the sports field, receive a standing ovation up on stage or achieve in the classroom, it is humility that underpins St Peter’s College as a school.

Whilst writing this speech, I tried to think of what I would like to be my last message to you.

I kept on thinking, how I could make this speech exceptional and unique? I kept on wanting to change and adapt my speech to make it sound more professional and acceptable.

Every time I did that it sounded less and less like me writing the speech. It took me doing this over and over to realise: “Why are you trying to be someone else?”

I needed to BE me! Be yourself!

And that was my lightbulb moment. I realized I was trying to find this ‘amazing’ message but what can be more exceptional, more unique, more amazing than to be, who you were made to be.

When I googled the word “be”, the 1st word that came up was: “exist”. Then I went further and ‘to exist’ is defined as the following… “To exist is to be real, have life and to be present.”

That is when I realized, this needs to be my message to you.

I want you to exist!

On your journey over the last 5 years, you have overcome many obstacles. You have experienced pain, joy, love, sorrow and rejection. These experiences have all molded you into the person you are today, with the help of your teachers, who have tried to give you the necessary skill set to be and to exist.

You came into Grade 8, unsure anxious, questioning where you fit in. Buried a time capsule.

You made friends, tried out new sports and challenged yourself with the cultural events.

You went into Grade 9, maybe still unsure, started making new relationships, dropped other relationships. So happy that you are not Grade 8 anymore but also knowing you are not a senior yet.

Grade 10. It was wonderful knowing you are now officially a senior, even though you were seen by the Grade 11s and Grade 12s as juniors. You possibly changed a subject and struggled with “what I want to be in the future.”

Then came Grade 11. This is the year that you are now a senior. This is the year where you really started to worry about your results. You might have dropped a subject and adjusted very quickly to your new choice. And then you found yourself counting down the days until you are in Grade 12.

And here you are… your Grade 12 year. Wishing from day 1 that this year will end. Waiting for all your main functions and knowing that everything you do in this year, is for the last time.

You will experience all of this again, be it, at tertiary education or a new job. Wanting to fit in, wanting to make a change, not always feeling empowered. But you have already experienced and dealt with all of that.

It is now your official last day of school. Looking back at the last 5 years: You experienced it all, you meant something, you played a part in this magnificent thing called life.

My wish for you is to be able to exist, to live to be everything at least once in your life. To be able to be the best you. To be able to be unique. To be able to be comfortable in your own skin.

There will be days where it is going to be difficult and there will be days where you will want to give up. But you need to exist.

I want you to: Be curious Be resilient Be life Be present Be kind Be hopeful Be empowered Be adventurous Remember you are who you are, and don’t for one second BE apologetic for who you are.

Starting 2021 with online school felt like an unwelcomed déjà vu.

Beginning the year without meeting our teachers in person proved to be a challenge, however, all our teachers rose to the occasion and welcomed us with open warm ‘virtual’ arms.

Coming back to school caused much inner turmoil. However, this turmoil soon vanished at the sound of echoes of laughter consuming the corridors. This laughter would travel to the sports fields and the MADD centre. The hockey astro would host passionate 5-a-side games while the dance studio contained many electrified dancers.

This excitement would soon get turned into anguish with the return to online school. This return would bring so much anxiety and exams had to be delayed, thus delaying the obvious stress that comes with exams. Looking back, the postponement of these exams would help us in preparation for our November examinations.

2021 was a year to remember, as it taught us the importance of selfcare, independence and supportive friends. For all the confusion last year brought us, one certainty was the lessons that were cherished.

2021 began with uncertainty as we were amidst another wave of Covid. The uncertainty of whether schools will return on time created anxiety in the education sector. We were fortunate to start on time and knew that we could revert to online learning ahould the need be.

Term one saw many of our Grade 9 students go through an adjustment phase and with grit they overcame many of the hurdles that Covid posed. Students were well aware of the academic rigour needed in Grade 9 and our students were well prepared for their Module Examinations. It was heartwarming to see the effort that was put into their preparation.

Term two saw us again revert to an online model. This time around our students we well versed in this process, and many used this time effectively. Normal schooling returned in June, and it was a delight to welcome our Grade 9s back to campus. The upcoming July Examinations loomed, and preparation was the order of the day. The Grade 9s in true St Peter’s spirit overcame many hurdles and did themselves proud in these examinations.

Term Three like all other terms at the College was busy. Sport returned to “normality” after being sidelined for a major part of the school calendar. It was amazing to see our Grade 9’s take to the field and showcase their talent in the various activities on offer. It was interesting to see the amount of Grade 9’s filling spaces in senior teams which bodes well for sport at the College.

After a busy lead up to the Half-Term, the juniors were granted a picnic afternoon. With sports and games on the go, our Grade 9’s took full advantage of this and used the time to let off steam and enjoy the afternoon.

On the academic front, subject choice was the order of the day. Our Grade 9’s was given extensive insight into the various career paths. Parents were also part of the process which helped them guide their children into making correct subject choices.

The highlight of Term Three was definitely seeing our Grade 9’s integrate into school and embrace the College culture by partaking in our extra-curricular program and making the quick adjustment to school uniform. Another “win” this term was the subtle change in academic rigor by our Grade 9’s. This will surely impacted their results positively. This is a vibrant group that seem to enjoy our balanced approach to education.

The start of 2021 was filled with hope and enthusiasm as the Grade 8 class began their High School journey at the College. Having faced the previous year with the many challenges that COVID brought, our students were eager to return to a somewhat ‘normal’ academic year.

Our Grade 8 students had the opportunity to meet new friends and become accustomed to the College routine while attending the Orientation Programme designed to help alleviate the anxiety and uncertainty that often comes with beginning High School. The Orientation Programme certainly set the students in good stead as we began the academic year with a rotation of students on and off campus. Although online learning posed several challenges, the students faced these giants head-on.

We were also able to conduct our annual Mentor-Mentee Programme which involved each Grade 8 student being paired up with a Matric student who acted as a ‘buddy’ to help navigate their way through High School. Several block lessons were allocated to this programme.

As is customary in the junior grades at the College, we had the opportunity to host our annual Creative Arts Day: a fun-filled day dedicated to creative engagement, exploration, and expression. Each elective – Music, Art, Dance, Drama, and French – had an extended period of time during which students were enriched creatively and conducted or performed practical work.

In 2021, we also kicked off our Food Parcel Drive - linked with Community Hours SA - and encouraged our students to bring food parcels for members of the community who are less fortunate. These food parcels were donated as part of the Gideon Rambuwani Outreach Programme. The Grade 8s generously contributed over 240 food parcels in 2021!

After we spent several weeks during 2021 learning online, we were pleased that we were able to have a Junior Picnic with the Grade 8s and 9s. This Picnic was well-attended and afforded the students an opportunity to make new friends in other grades, as the social interaction at the College had been limited due to COVID. Slowly we were able to integrate our students back into a normal High School routine. We are in a very fortunate position to have such a resilient and eager group of students, and the future promises to be bright.

School closures due to COVID-19 have brought significant disruptions to education globally. Emerging evidence indicates that the pandemic gave rise to the loss of teaching and learning time. To navigate this challenge St Peter’s College was in the fortunate position to already have Microsoft Teams had successfully set up. This proved to be a vital tool that allowed us to continue with for effective teaching, assessing and communication. However, this necessary online phase still did not fully replicate the classroom experience and interaction.

We were delighted to have our students return to campus.

When the students returned to school they were supported by health and safety protocols and had the opportunity to opt for vaccination programmes offered on property. It was as if College life has barely changed from 2020, but we know that this not true, our students faced many new challenges.

Education is not just focused teaching skills and knowledge, and we have come to realise the importance of resilience as a vital component of success in education. Many years ago, St Peter’s had elected to add Resilience to the core values of Respect, Relationships Responsibility. We were and remain aware of the importance of building resilience in our students.

Resilience or grit is a vital characteristic of successful people.

Our aim is to provide our students with a holistic offering, at times, this may cause the students some stress. Our students are kept busy with academic demands, co-curricular activities, and added to this, their social lives. The good news that we are all far more capable than we realise. However, the reality is that fear and insecurity may creep during moments of stress. Unfortunately, fear and anxiety affect our ability to draw on our resilience reserves when we need it most. The most common question is, can we teach resilience?

According to a leading Australian youth mental health site, resilience is taught in an environment where all students feel safe and supported. A ‘safe’ environment then allows for students to try new things and emphasise the growth and learning opportunities and not fear failure or making mistakes.

As a College Community, we celebrated excellent Grade 12 results for 2021. In hindsight, it was a journey. The students were unsettled by the sudden return to online learning at the start of their Grade 12 academic year and they felt the impact of the loss of many Grade 12 traditions. On more occasions than I wish to recall, the students had requested that we defer examinations, but as an Executive, we had stood our ground.

The proof was in the pudding, the Bachelor Pass increased from 94% in 2021 to 98% in 2022. This is a noteworthy achievement, and we congratulate the Class of 2021. Yi Lou who attained 100% for Mathematics, is a true example of a resilient young man. He arrived at St Peter’s College in 2018 speaking broken English. He persevered and walked away as the Dux scholar for 2021 and achieved an impressive 8 distinctions.

It is believed that when building resilience, it is all about the journey and not just the destination. I can come to realise over the years that when we only celebrate the academic wins, we instil a belief that the only thing that matters of the product. To build a positive mindset and a willingness to grow, it’s important to focus on progress and not just the end results. This can be done through providing open feedback to students that focuses on their effort rather than the outcome.

This is best modelled in the Project Based Learning classroom in Grade 8 and 9. The students have the freedom to explore, make mistakes, and develop a love for learning. This is really a safe space to develop, progress while building resilience without the pressure of a percentage. I enjoyed the privilege of assessing PBL projects last year. I was impressed by the standard of work presented and the level of confidence of the Grade 9 students. Resilience is truly practised in PBL. After a rather disruptive academic year, the Grade 10 and 11 students wrote both Mid-year and Final Examinations in 2021.

Although we saw a slight dip in the Mid-year results, it was pleasing to see that the averages followed the usual trend of improving by the end of the Final Examinations. At the end of 2021, St Peter’s College proudly presented 27 students with academic half colours, 8 students with academic full colours and 15 students with Academic honours. These awards are testament to the students and the resilience of our students. And so, we go bravely into the future .... with our resilient students.

St Peter’s College, Anglican Day School in Sandton, is once again celebrating the excellent results achieved by their Matric Class of 2021. Despite another tough year for students the world over, and for education overall, St Peter’s College Matrics have come out on top.

“Our Matrics have conquered hurdles no one could have foreseen. They did not get to experience many of the milestones traditionally celebrated and enjoyed by Grade 12 students. They have lived through two pandemic years and had even more online teaching than the Grade 12s of 2020. Even under greater pressure than usual, they have been truly resilient; showing extraordinary tenacity and a level of dedication that has made us really proud,” says Mrs Shelly Matthews, Deputy Head of Academics at St Peter’s College.

The 2021 matric results showed a marked upward trend from Preliminary Results to Finals, culminating in a 98% BD pass, 208 A symbols, 255 B symbols and some standout individual achievements.

Deputy Headmaster, Student Affairs We live in an ever-changing world where young people need to be equipped with the correct values and skills to thrive within diverse communities. We strive to teach our students to live up to the core values of Relationships, Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. The year 2021 presented our students, parents and staff with many challenges and change. However, our students have persevered, shown resilience, and embraced change and came out the year stronger. Our teachers approach and their ability to adapt while meeting the demands of the families we serve has been remarkable.

The challenges presented by the pandemic impacted on our students social, physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. The changes in their daily lives and routine created a greater awareness of the importance of their health and mental wellbeing. The Wellness department, Grade Head Committee and Co-Curricular department adapted and made the necessary changes in their approach to meet our student needs through a variety of initiatives, activities and interventions. Our students displayed an increased confidence in their approach to their academics and wellness throughout the year.

The strategies implemented by our staff to ensure that the transition into the “new norm” were a great success. Navigating this uncharted territory required a combined effort from teachers, parents, and students. The Pastoral Care Team adapted and implemented new initiatives to ensure that our student’s emotional, social, physical, and academic needs were met.

We continued to remain alert and act upon the current trend of self-harm and depression. Our community is constantly reminded to support all College endeavours by exercising deep listening and to be vigilant at all times.

Various support interventions with our Educational Psychologists and Grade Heads provided the platform to address Mental wellness amongst students on a continuous basis.

Our students’ good mental health remained a priority as we were continuously required to adapt our delivery of teaching and our offering. Whilst academic performance is paramount, the holistic development of our students was embedded in safe and all-round healthy environments. As a result of the above-mentioned, and the move to level 1 restrictions, our focus shifted on supporting and encouraging our students to take part in the Co-Curricular programme, and to host social events such as the Grade 11 bonding day, Grade 8 and Grade 9 picnic and social.

St Peter’s College has always strived to make our students high school experience the best days of their lives. It was evident with the

current climate in the country that our children were yearning for the many events that have become a tradition at the College, and some form of normally. The traditional high events like the Matric Dance, Prize Giving, Final Assembly and Valediction, the events that mean so much to our Grade 12s were extremely well attended and enjoyed by all. The Grade 12s were so grateful for the successful Matric Dance, Valediction and Prize Giving/Final Assembly. The notorious “silly season” which ended with a very well attended beach day and braai did not give rise to much mischief, the Class 2021 was the bestbehaved Grade 12 group during their last days at high school. The Grade 8 and 9 picnic and social created an opportunity for cohesion between the grades as often our students isolate themselves within their grade and struggle to form relationships with children of other age groups. The group activities helped mitigate the conflict that often occurs between different grades. The Grade 11 Bonding Day was a massive success. The Grade 11s missed out on their Hike as well as the Leadership Identification Camp due to Covid-restrictions.

They also did not have a Spring Ball. These events are usually put into place for the Grade to bond and to get to know each other a little better. The Grade 11s took advantage of this opportunity and participated with great enthusiasm. They had the opportunity to get to know each other on a different level. The purpose of this day was to bond and establishment a relationship with someone based on shared feelings, interests or experiences.

The Student Leadership application process commenced in June. The Grade 11 candidates applied via an online questionnaire, the questions were designed in a way that the candidate self-analyse their character, values and morals. In consultation with the Grade 11 Student Body, the 2021 Prefect Body, Grade Heads and the Transformation and Inclusion Committee, the following changes were proposed and accepted by the Executive Committee:

• Change in name; from Prefects to Student Leadership Council, with the focus on committee leadership and not policing duties.

• Committee structure change to heads of committees.

• Leadership training Workshops were introduced.

• Leadership Camp where the Student Leadership Council voted for the three executive heads: Head of Academic Committee, Head of Co-Curricular Committee and Head of Pastoral Committee.

• The Leadership Body also voted for one Head of School on Leadership Camp.

The Gideon Rambuwani Food Parcel Drive that was initiated not only to substitute previously planned outreach programmes but more importantly to assist the community of Gideon Rambuwani Primary school during these challenging times. This initiative has also assisted our students in meeting the community hours requirements for Grade 8 to Grade 10 and also is assisting the Grade 11s and Grade 12s in obtaining the required social responsibility hours for Life Orientation. The St Peter’s College community’s response has been fantastic. We have managed to contribute over 1 200 food parcels over the past 18 months.

We are looking forward to reinstating the Grade 11 Outreach (House/ school build) programme in 2022.

Our students have also been active on the Community Hours SA virtual volunteering offering which has created the opportunity to achieve the required number community hours that each Grade 8 to Grade 10 students needs to complete every year.

We are affiliated, as an educational institution, to the Anglican Diocese of Johannesburg. The Bishop of the Diocese is the Spiritual Head and Visitor on the Council.

As a Christian institution we espouse the values that Jesus Christ taught. We aim to equip our students with a holistic education that encompasses the spiritual, intellectual, physical, and social aspects. Most days begin with a reading from the Holy Scriptures and prayer.

Chapel service is held on alternate Wednesdays, and Grade Chapel services are held on alternate Thursdays. We celebrate the Holy Eucharist on high holy days (such as Ash Wednesday), on special occasions, and to highlight important historical days such as Heritage Day or Youth Day. Eucharist is also held on the first and last days of each term. Students wear their formal uniforms to Chapel and Eucharist services. In all grades our goal is to equip our students with the fundamentals in making valuebased decisions to address the challenges that life may present.

DANCE Mrs Lutchman has stepped into the departure of Mrs Maneli.

Both Contemporary Dance as well as Street Dance have weekly rehearsals in preparation for the 2022 season. St Peter’s College will once again compete in the Dance Sport Schools League (DSSL) as well as the Inter-High Dance Festival. The two performances during Open Day were well-received, and the Gumboot Dance Experience for prospective students and parents has lifted the conversation as to the College’s offering to new heights.

SALT (SOUND AND LIGHTING TEAM) SALT has increased their activities with assemblies now being viable. Live streaming remains a goal and will improve in quality as we progress to the end of the year. This might become a separate entity in 2022.

AD@M (ART, DESIGN AND MEDIA TEAM) The ambitious 2021 Drawings Project has garnered over 700 entries, and they were displayed to great effect during the Open Day. The artwork is due to be auctioned in January next year.

The Music Mural, with the audacious disintegrating pianoforte is nearing completion.

The Bookbinding Workshop was well-attended, and students are using this new skill to present innovative notebooks in class settings.

ANNUAL SPORT AND CULTURAL FESTIVAL Planning has started on this venture for 2022, and the first communication to schools is due to be released before November.

DEBATING Unfortunately, none of our teams “broke” in the SACEE league.

However, Mr Hiemstra and Mrs Ripley-Evans organised three friendlies to fill the gap. The online training format has been kept and will end for the year after Mid-Term.

The combined St Petrian and Photography Club competition will close on 1 November.

Photographers are now tasked at every home fixture and event taking place. For example, three students attended the Golf Day. The resource create by this has assisted the Marketing department with lots of material for their cyberspaces.

DRAMA Musical Theatre has increased its participation and did performances from “Les Misérables “and “Revolting Children.”

For the rest of the year the focus will be on so-called Jukebox Musicals where popular show tunes are strung together in new and exciting combinations.

The rehearsals for our Physical Theatre production continue over weekends with Mr Doneda.

MUSIC (VOCAL AND INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES) All the ensembles are rehearsing weekly. During Open Day, the respective Marimba bands as well as the Drumline performed. The mini concerts in the Music Studio during the tours were a highlight for many visitors.

St Peter’s not only supplies tuition in several instruments but also offers: VOCAL MUSIC Choir, Beauty Shop, and Barbershop.

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES Jazz Band, Marimba Band for each grade 8 – 12, Steelpan Band, Orchestra, Rock Band, and Drumline.

ECO-PETS The club hosted a meaningful two-night stay at Rotavi Lodge in the Waterberg District of Limpopo. The students learnt about conservation efforts in the area and contributed in some of the activities. This is slated to become an annual event.

FIRST AID With the return to Sport fixtures, the First Aid team do a minimum of 35 hours per week.

Netcare will again provide training at the start of the year to students and teachers.

ST PETRIAN DIGITAL NEWSPAPER The online format will be tweaked in 2022 as the current site does not promote enough “hits.” Notwithstanding, several articles were recently loaded, and we hope the traffic will increase.

The return to Sport in Term 3 was remarkable, and our students need to be commended for rising to the occasion.

It has been quite impressive to see numbers swell at sports practices even though Sport is not compulsory under COVID-19 times. The anticipation of returning to inter-school competitions and tournaments was palpable, and St Peter’s College participated in numerous events across all codes.

The following sporting codes were active in Term 3: Athletics, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Esports, Equestrian, Football, Golf, Swimming, Tennis and Water Polo.

Head of Sport Our tennis players competed in the St Dunstan’s College Mixed Doubles Tournament, and the A team won the tournament. The 1st Team Water Polo girls achieved bronze, and our 1st Team boy’s won gold at the Regional Co-Eds 2021 Tournament. The 1st team boys also won gold at the 2021 Reef Cup. Despite the limited number of golf league fixtures, our 1st Golf Team played some impressive golf and placed first at the St Peter’s College PA Golf Day. Another highlight was the introduction of the College first Esports FIFA tournament.

The Sports Office is eagerly looking forward to 2022 and to once again hold our flagship events that we have sorely missed during the pandemic. Hopefully, the Old Petrian’s Water Polo, Basketball and T20 Cricket Tournaments, and the Sport and Cultural Festival will not be impacted by COVID-19 next year.

With all inter-school athletic meetings still cancelled due to COVID-19, St Peter’s College hosted the Inter-House Track and Field Events over two afternoons. The Inter-House event was a resounding success watching our athletes compete against each other and witnessing the enjoyment of our athletes trying out new field events. Our football players enjoyed an extremely successful short season, and the 1st Girls and Boys football teams won the CEPSSL Football league. Our U15 Boys were placed 2nd in the league.
