2022 Wrapped FLORIDA THEATER A NNUAL REPORT

Our Mission

Our mission, as a nonprofit organization, is to enhance the North Florida community’s quality of life by providing diverse and memorable arts and entertainment experiences, and by preserving a unique historic Jacksonville landmark.

Letter to Our Supporters

Hello Friends and Supporters,

We are pleased to present the Florida Theatre’s Annual Report for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2022. As a nonprofit corporation, we believe that it’s important to report to the community about our efforts to serve the community.

We began the fiscal year on October 1, 2021 with a show that very night by the Little River Band. Ticket sales were still a little post-COVID sluggish, but in hindsight, that was the beginning of what turned out to be a fantastic year, both in terms of the artistic content we were able to put on the historic Florida Theatre stage, and in terms of attendance.

For a while, it looked like we were on track to break a 25-year record, and even though in the end we did not break the record, it was still an outstanding year. In fact, when compared to all other theatre venues worldwide by the concert industry magazine Pollstar, the Florida Theatre’s attendance ranked #49 overall in the world, and #5 nationally for theatres under 2,000 seats. If you’re a supporter, and you’ve ever wondered if we’re delivering appropriate results, there is an objective measurement.

The pages of this report chronicle the year in facts, numbers and photos, but there are a few things we think are important to highlight here.

The Theatreworks program continued to recover from COVID, with 11 performances on the Florida Theatre stage, and 30 performances that we sent directly to schools who were still unable to travel for field trips this year. The 16,609 students served is a fraction of what the program serves in a good year, but it continues to be better than the COVID years!

The percentage of audience members from Duval County fell slightly, but with overall attendance increasing, that just means that more people are coming to downtown Jacksonville from outside of

Jacksonville to spend their entertainment dollars here. Later in this report you’ll see what that means for economic impact. (Spoiler: it’s good!)

We also continued a multi-year commitment to improving the historic Florida Theatre. In just the last three years, we have replaced the theatre’s seats, doubled the number of wheelchair accessible seats, installed a new assistive listening system for the hearing impaired, installed a new stage lighting system and installed a new concer t sound system. During fiscal 2022 we began to build out a new Men’s Room in the Mezzanine, and the brand-new Remedy Lounge, a 3,000 square foot hospitality space for members and donors right off the Mezzanine lobby. As of this writing, three months after the end of the fiscal year, it is officially open, and has been enthusiastically received.

In the coming year, we will be closed for four months, from July to October to restore the decorative plaster in the auditorium and lobbies; paint the auditorium and lobbies with historic accuracy; replace the 40+ year old heating, ventilation and air conditioning system; restore all of the restrooms; and move the electrical vault from the first floor, where it is a flood risk and an obstacle to further improvements, to the third floor.

By the end of this year we will have expended $14 million on these projects and we are grateful for the support of the donors to the Centennial Campaign listed herein; the City of Jacksonville, the administration of Mayor Curry, and the City Council for matching the funds we raise; and the ticket buyers who have paid a restoration fee when purchasing their tickets.

The Florida Theatre turns 100 in 2027, and our goal is to make the venue the best venue it can be for the artists and audience it serves, and to keep putting great performances on the stage. Thank you for your support.
