At times, it can be hard to love your body shape when the world around you is so focused on looking a certain way.

We forget that the female form is beautiful for its individuality, and there are so many things to love about your curves in all their sexy, voluptuous glory, so embrace them. No matter how you feel about your body, it is yours and it always will be. No one has the perfect body and it is a fact only Photoshop creates perfect bodies.

While other people are obsessed with clothes and what’s happening Friday or Saturday night, you may feel like your weight overshadows everything, feeling uncomfortable in your own skin and around other people. After enough thoughtless, mean, insensitive comments you may think it’s easier to just accept yourself as what you hear others calling you: “the fat person”. Some people who feel ashamed of their weight may believe they deserve to be bullied, and the truth is no one deserves that. Being bullied is not your fault, bullies have difficulties getting along with other people they like to hurt and humiliate. This makes them feel more powerful in their minds. Never let being plus-sized feel like a burden. Instead, flaunt your beauty with confidence and style. Don’t stress over what size your clothes are, what your body looks like in clothes or what people think of your looks and in the long haul you will be so much happier.

PROTECTING IN A FIERY WINTER

As our northern neighbors are shoveling and snowboarding, we here in Florida are still fighting the fiery furnace called Summer, with great anticipation for that one day we get to wear winter boots. Our minds and air conditioners both anxiously await a much needed break from the intense humidity and scorch of the largest star in our solar system, the Sun. Every true Floridian is armed daily with our two most powerful weapons – an umbrella and sunblock.

As a hairstylist, I often ask my clients, “How are you protecting your hair”?. The response is generally a quizzical look of is there even such a thing? ABSOLUTELY! Let me share a couple of tips on keeping your tresses protected in this transitional season: 1. We love our last pool days, your hair doesn’t. Be sure to saturate your hair with clean water before entering to minimize the absorption of chlorine. For avid swimmers, a clarifying shampoo followed by an intense hydrating mask is vital. Nevertheless, a trim will be in your near future.

2. Retain moisture during our dryer, winter months and shampoo less.

Sounds simple but your stressed ends will thank you. Dry shampoo and a quick braid will get you through most days. When shampoo day arrives, use a restorative shampoo and nourishing conditioner. A natural oil for daily maintenance will seal in moisture.

Our seasons generally fluctuate between hot and hotter, these tips are little gems on how to get us all through the best of times and the hotter ones.

A Formal Round-Up

Suits

When it comes to the jacket, make sure that it hugs your shoulders, is slim in the body and that it covers your bottom.

The trousers should be slim, not skinny, and have a break that suits your personal taste.

For your first suit, go for something in a solid navy or gray and then expand from there – burgundy, olive, khaki and French blue are all viable options. Black is NEVER suitable for business or the day time (if you want something similar, go for charcoal gray instead), but can look very modern and stylish when warn in the evening.

As long as the suit fits you properly, you can dress it up or down to your tastes. Think dress shirts, grenadine ties and Derby shoes or neutral t-shirts, trainers and chambray shirts.

Blazers/Sport Coats

Same fit as a suit jacket but cut a little shorter in length.

They can still be solid in color but I tend to think they look better when they have a pattern or interesting color involved such as brown windowpane check, navy plaid or pastel shades.

Look for jackets that have softer shoulders and minimal lining for a comfortable fit that feels more like wearing a shirt than a jacket. Try pairing them with everything from a classic jeans and t-shirt combination to a pair of corduroy trousers and a rugby top.

And don’t forget to add a flourish with a pocket square.

the INTERVIEW...

1. When did you know you wanted to become a singer and actress?

People have always asked me “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, my answer was always the same, an Artist. I can’t remember the exact day i fell in love with music and acting, it has always been a part of who i am as a person. I go back into my childhood and i see myself with a hairbrush in my hand (pretending it was a microphone) and singing to my mom who was always standing by my door watching me “perform”.

2. What inspired you to become an Artist?

People did, and that great feeling you get knowing that you can change lives with what you do. You could feel down or even depressed, and music can heal your soul. Sometimes you can feel stressed, but a good comedy play or a motivational movie can help you forget your troubles. As entertainers we have a big responsibility towards our audience and they are counting on us to deliver a message that can release them from their daily routines for a little while, or maybe for life.

6. Aside from your musical and acting career, what else do you dedicate time to?

I have a day job as an Elementary School Music Teacher. There i conduct the school Choir and the hand - bells ensemble. I also teach private vocal lessons and am an acting coach at a modeling and talent agency.

7. What projects are you currently working on?

3. Where did you learn your craft?

My first music steps were defined listening to my dad sing and play the piano. I use to perform in every single talent show at school. That gave me the experience and a chance to grow from each performance. In middle school, i became a singer in the school’s band. There I learned to sing different music genres and how to perform on stage. I was a member of the band until high school and my music teacher, who was a great mentor, encouraged me to continue a formal music education in college, so i did. I went to the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and Vocal Performance. My vocal lessons there were My vocal lessons there were all classical performance and opera, a great chance for me to develop this vocal technique and apply it to my popular music technique. In college i was part of a community theater where i learned all about musicals and plays.

4. What is your favorite genre?

I don’t really have a favorite type of music. If a song comes out on the radio and it catches my attention, i just download it to my play list. However, i do enjoy listening to reggae music in my car and at home. When reading a book, i enjoy listening to oldies and classical music.

5. What has been your greatest accomplishments as a singer and an actress?

No doubt that one of my biggest accomplishments in music was singing on stage with two of my favorite bands like Cultura Profetica and Gondwana, where i have opened shows for their concerts. Also, being able to sing in many stages around he state of Florida, like Hard Rock Cafe and House of Blues where i entertain tourists and locals. Acting at the Mad Cow Theater, the Orlando Shakespeare Theater and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts has been my greatest accomplishments as an actress. Sharing the stage with well - known Puerto Rican Artists like Gladys Rodriguez, Maricarmen Aviles, Edwin Ocasio and the Spanish actress Sara Pastor. I am so grateful.

The evening was perfect that the atmosphere lent itself to a marriage proposal from the young Axel Ruíz to his girlfriend Stephanie, who very excitedly accepted the proposal from the brave young man. Among the attendees were Miguel Cotto and his wife Melissa, the teacher Cuco Peña, Michael Stuart, Nicole Chacón who enjoyed the wonderful repertoire presented by this artist.

At a solemn moment Luis asked the attendees to give him 15 seconds of silence for everything that is happening in his native Nicaragua, mentioning the atrocities of the government towards the people and begging for peace for their land.

The night culminated with "Yo no sé mañana" creating a stir in those present making the orchestra after finishing, come back for Luis Enrique to play the last song "Así es la vida" creating a magical night of love and musical delirium.

On Saturday, June 30, Arena Live served as the perfect setting for an evening full of salsa, flavor and feeling. The prince of salsa Luis Enrique was the special dish of the night but not before having as a preamble the talented Norberto and Gerardo of NG2 as a preview of what would be a night full of memories.

The boys of NG2 masterfully animated the atmosphere interpreting themes of their past productions, songs like "Amores extraños", "Como amigos" and the now famous "Ella menea" among others. Norberto and Gerardo interacted with the public that came together to see one of the querendones of the decade of the 80's, allowing them to excel with the demanding public that waited to see one of their idols from the time of romantic salsa. NG2, showed once again that salsa is still fashionable and that it continues to gather followers so that the genre does not die.

Luis Enrique made a triumphant entry with the chords of the song "Así es la vida" provoking euphoria among the women present. Luis Enrique was very assertive in choosing the themes presented on that night, interpreting themes from his beginnings to the most recent. The night culminated with "Yo no sé mañana" creating a stir in those present making the orchestra after finishing, come back for Luis Enrique to play the last song "Así es la vida" creating a magical night of love and musical delirium. Sun, sea, sand, and year-round warm, balmy weather, Florida is a popular go-to destination for visitors wanting to escape colder climes or taking a break from college. Spring Break draws a young, party-ready crowd to the shores of Florida looking for fun in the sun, and cities all along the coast vibrate with an energetic and dynamic vibe.

But it’s not only the great weather and beautiful beaches that attract thousands of tourists every month - the state offers a plethora of attractions, activities, and adventures for all tastes. From arts and cultural excursions to water sports and land-based recreational events, here is a list of fun and exciting places to see and explore in the state of Florida.

1. Panama City Beach

Renowned for its miles of palm-lined white sandy beaches lapped by the calm, clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Panama City Beach is a famous seafront town and vacation spot in northwest Florida. Panama City Beach is home to two protected state parks, namely St. Andrews State Park and Pier Park, which are bordered by the Gulf and offer a variety of activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and fishing.

The beach is also home to many excellent waterfront restaurants that serve fresh local seafood, and plenty of attractions and the waters off the coast feature dozens of artificial reefs, which are ideal for snorkeling, scuba diving, and deep-sea fishing.

2. Jacksonville

Set at the mouth of the St. John’s River in northeastern Florida, Jacksonville is a large city and regional business center as well as a natural paradise for vacationers wanting an escape. An overview of diabetes types Diabetes is a condition that impairs the body’s ability to process blood glucose, otherwise known as blood sugar. In the United States, the estimated number of people over 18 years of age with diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes is 30.2 million. The figure represents between 27.9 and 32.7 percent of the population.

Without ongoing, careful management, diabetes can lead to a buildup of sugars in the blood, which can increase the risk of dangerous complications, including stroke and heart disease.

Different kinds of diabetes can occur, and managing the condition depends on the type. Not all forms of diabetes stem from a person being overweight or leading an inactive lifestyle. In fact, some are present from childhood.

Diabetes

There are several types of diabetes.

Three major diabetes types can develop: Type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes: Type I diabetes: Also known as juvenile diabetes, this type occurs when the body fails to produce insulin. People with type I diabetes are insulin-dependent, which means they must take artificial insulin daily to stay alive.

Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes affects the way the body uses insulin. While the body still makes insulin, unlike in type I, the cells in the body do not respond to it as effectively as they once did. This is the most common type of diabetes, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and it has strong links with obesity.

Gestational diabetes: This type occurs in women during pregnancy when the body can become less sensitive to insulin. Gestational diabetes does not occur in all women and usually resolves after giving birth.

Less common types of diabetes include monogenic diabetes and cystic fibrosis-related diabetes.

Prediabetes

Doctors refer to some people as having prediabetes or borderline diabetes when blood sugar is usually in the range of 100 to 125 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).

Normal blood sugar levels sit between 70 and 99 mg/dL, whereas a person with diabetes will have a fasting blood sugar higher than 126 mg/dL. The prediabetes level means that blood glucose is higher than usual but not so high as to constitute diabetes.

People with prediabetes are, however, at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, although they do not usually experience the symptoms of full diabetes.

The risk factors for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes are similar. They include: being overweight a family history of diabetes having a high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level lower than 40 mg/dL or 50 mg/dL a history of high blood pressure having gestational diabetes or giving birth to a child with a birth weight of more than 9 pounds a history of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) being of African-American, Native American, Latin American, or Asian-Pacific Islander descent being more than 45 years of age having a sedentary lifestyle The complications of diabetes can be severe, including kidney failure and stroke, so managing the condition is vital.

How Seasonal Allergies can Affect Your Oral Health Dr. Geoffrey Morris on Quick Tips to Fight Back

Morris, DMD, MS Bees in the air, flowers blooming big and bright, over sized coats and hoodies being stuffed to the back of the closet are just some of the signs signaling the few days of winter are behind us and spring is approaching. With allergy season right around the corner, many Floridians are starting to reach for our boxes of tissues and over-the-counter medicines.

According to data published by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is estimated that around 21.5 million people or 14% of the U.S. population suffers from seasonal allergies.

Seasonal allergies are caused by our body’s immune system developing a hypersensitivity to an environmental substance, which under normal conditions would not elicit an immune response. On a close up molecular level, antibodies known as Immunoglobulin E (IgE), bind to foreign allergens triggering a chemical cascade resulting in the release of inflammatory compounds such as histamines.

One thing many of you may be surprised to know is that seasonal allergies do not only cause stuffy noses and itchy eyes but can also actually affect your oral health.

Tooth Pain

Bad Breath

During this time of year many patients come into my office with what they think is tooth pain and come to find out it is actually sinus related. When thinking about the location of teeth people generally think about the mouth. Although this is obviously correct, what many people don’t realize is that the roots of some upper molars may actually project into the sinus cavity. Ultimately that long agonizing tooth ache you’re experiencing during pollen season may actually be attributed to allergy symptoms. During this immune reaction inflammation builds up in the maxillary sinus, which causes pressure that can present as pain when biting down or hot/cold sensitivity. Your primary care physician may prescribe you an oral or nasal antihistamine to get these reactions under control.

Allergies can also attribute to bad breath in two different ways. The first way is due to postnasal drip and sore throats. For some people a coating containing dead cells, glycoproteins, immubnoglobulins, lipids and other foreign substances may occur in the back of the throat, these substances have been known to carry an odor. The second way is due to dry mouth. When your nose is congested, individuals tend to breath from their mouth, drying up teeth and mucus membranes. A lack of protective saliva allows for proliferation of bacteria that both cause tooth decay and give off volatile sulfur compounds. Fight off this problem constantly staying hydrated with water, chew lots of gum (of course sugar free) and using an over the counter rinse like Biotene. Be careful to pick a mouthwash meant for dry mouth, many products on the market contain alcohol and other ingredients that may dry the mouth even more.
