Smart Exercising to Lose Weight Over the past 50 years, Americans have packed on the pounds. In fact, the average American gains 2 pounds per year. The increased weight leads to obesity which causes a host of problems that are linked to diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, and some cancers. So how much exercise do you need to lose weight? The American College of Sports Medicine recommends using the FITT Principle (frequency, intensity, time, type). The frequency should be at least 3 days per week with a goal of 5 or more. Intensity should be moderate to allow for daily consistency and long enough duration. Time should be at least 30 minutes up to 60 minutes. And finally, type of exercise should use large muscles groups (ie legs) and you should enjoy it, so you’ll do it consistently. If you are incorporating resistance training, a fitness professional is essential for novices to use proper technique. The best programs last a minimum of 6 months and aim to take off 10% of an individual’s body weight. After 6 months, the program can be stepped up for continued progress.
