BRIEF ENCOUNTER

SHAKINA NAYFACK

THE ‘TRANS TRUTHER’ FROM ‘DIFFICULT PEOPLE’ BY JOHN WALKER

We chatted with the Hulu star about casting trans actors, North Carolina’s bathroom bill, and, yes, whether jet fuel can melt steel beams.

T

he TV Tropes wiki might be packed full of television’s most overused clichés and storytelling devices, but nowhere throughout its thousands upon thousands of web pages will you find an entry for “trans truther.” That’s because there has only been one such character in the history of TV, and she’s played by New York’s own Shakina Nayfack. Nayfack, a performer and actress who debuted her one woman rock musical, Manifest Pussy, at Joe’s Pub last June, recently joined the cast of Hulu’s Difficult People. She plays Lola, a selfdescribed “trans truther” who’s as eager to call out transphobic comments as she is to tell anyone within earshot that “Bush did 9/11.” I recently had the chance to speak with Shakina over the phone. Over the course of our conversation, she touched on a number of important conversations like casting trans actors in trans roles, playing an “imperfect” trans character (i.e., a narcissistic asshole who happens to be trans), taki ng Manifest Pussy on the road in protest of North Carolina’s anti LGBT legislation, and, yes, whether or not jet fuel can melt steel beams. 12 AUGUST 18, 2016

Have you watched the latest episode of Difficult People yet? Oh, of course! I stayed up till midnight last night to watch it as soon as I could. I know some actors feel weird about watching themselves on screen. Do you feel that way? No, I don’t have that dissonance. It’s exciting! I mean, acting on TV is so new to me, but it’s awesome. How did you land the part of Lola? Did Julie Klausner reach out to you, or…? I auditioned just like everybody else. There was a casting call that was distributed rather discreetly, looking for a transgender actress to not only play the role but also consult with them on the character. The one thing they knew was that they wanted this character to be a “trans truther,” so the jokes were all about 9/11 and assumptions people make about being a trans woman. After I was cast, I read all the scripts, gave feedback, and made suggestions about what Lola might say or do in a scene

WHAT’SNEXT What are some of the suggestions you made? I don’t want to give away any jokes that are coming up, but, well, I introduced everyone to the concept of biological essentialism. And in the first episode, I wrote the line: “Check your privilege, faggot! And I can say that because I was one.”

How does Lola differ from the, albeit super limited, number of trans characters we’ve seen on TV in the last few years? I think Lola might be the first, or at least one of the first, comedic transgender roles played by a transgender actress on TV. Even though people will qualify other shows as “comedy,” the trans characters don’t get to do anything funny. There might be comedy happening a round them, but they’re never the ones generating the laughs. That’s what’s really exciting about Difficult People. The show is about narcissistic thirtysomething New Yorkers, and Lola is allowed to be just as imperfect and offensive as everybody else—while still being on the right side of the joke.

Do you think that balance would have been more difficult to strike if the show had cast a cis actress in the role of Lola? Sure. I mean, if you let someone else tell your story, they’re going to get the details wrong. Trans representation is really on trend at the moment. We’re seeing it more and more in pop culture and in national conversations about civil rights and legal protections. So if you introduce trans characters that aren’t played by trans people, you’re not really doing any favors to further trans visibility. It’s not just our narratives that are on the line; it’s our bodies, our presence—our very existence. This past year, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in hate crimes and murders of trans women of color, and it’s no coincidence that this uptick in violence comes at a time of increased trans representation in popular culture and political discourse. N

The levels to that line! I’ve literally never heard anything like it on TV before. It’s so cool how you get to break a lot of new ground with this character. She’s a politicized character, however flawed and hyperbolic her politics may be, so I get to speak some real truth on the show. I really love when Lola’s able to call out people’s assumptions, label them, and correct them. There’ve been times in my own life when people have treated me like a drag queen or a sex worker just because I’m a trans woman, so we bring those experiences to Lola so that she can shut them down and give voice to a trans experience that, so far, isn’t reflected in mainstream media.

TOP 5 COFFEE SHOPS IN GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE We round-up some of our local favorites for a cup of caffeine. BY CHRISTOPHER MURO

LIFESTYLE “We didn’t want to isolate ourselves and create a space geared to any particular crowd,” said Protsman. “We have a super friendly staff and there’s no arrogance. We want you to come in and feel comfortable asking questions,” he added. So yeah, have you heard about the new coffee shop by the train tracks in Oakland Park? That’s Switchbox Roaster. You should definitely stop by.

Hey! If you’re not too busy, do you want to meet for coffee later? We know that there’s more to a good coffee shop than excellent coffee. That’s why we’ve comprised a list of the five coffee shop hangouts in the Fort Lauderdale area that simply won’t let you down. So the next time you’re looking for a place to have coffee with friends or feel someone out before an “official” date night, consider one of these very attractive options.

2. SIP JAVA CO.

1. SWITCHBOX COFFEE ROASTERS

3446 NE 12TH Ave, Oakland Park When this spacious, attention grabbing shop opened just two and a half months ago, it hoped to be a welcoming community space that people from all walks of life can grow to enjoy. Luckily, it has quickly transformed into just that says Brian Protsman. Protsman owns the shop with his wife Miriam. He said the idea for the shop first started around a fire pit in Denver with his life and business partner, who he also says is the true visionary behind the store, By roasting their own coffee in house, Protsman says that they are able to choose which coffees best fit their theme. By avoiding the popular dark roasts that many other shops seem to glorify, Switchbox Roaster allows the customer to taste all the nuances of the coffee without heavy flavoring. The shop, which does minimal advertising, believes in both organic coffee and growth. With more and more fans every week, their approach has clearly been working. 16 AUGUST 18, 2016

638 N Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale When we dropped by, the proud owner of Sip Java Co., Bob Calabro was in mid conversation with a customer. After taking Calabro’s advice, the customer quickly drank his espresso and commented on how tasty it was. He then told Calabro that he had to leave because his repairman was stopping by to fix his roof. The comment sparked the memory of Calabro who then expressed his concern about a long list of other things they had discussed in the customer’s previous visits to the coffee shop. At this point, the customer seemed impressed that Calabro remembered the details of his life. It’s this kind of exchange between the staff and customers that makes Sip Java Co. more than just another coffee shop. “They know most of our customers if not by first name, by what they order,” said Calabro of his warm staff. “Most of the time they will have a drink going even if the person is three back in line so that they can pick up the drink and go about their busy day”. No matter how hectic your day may be, dropping in to Sip Java Co. is destined to make it better. Oh, be sure to try the Canadian while you’re there. There’s something about coffee and maple syrup that makes the heavens open.

4. THE ALCHEMIST

2430 NE 13th Ave, Wilton Manors This Wilton Manor treasure greeted us with a sign that read, “Coffee and Friends make the perfect blend.” We couldn’t agree more! If you’re looking for a hangout spot with your crew this may be the best option on our list for just that. With a serene outdoor seating section highlighted by bright blue and orange umbrellas, The Alchemist provides the perfect escape from a busy day at school or the office. Located just opposite Wilton Station, it is easily accessible from the drive yet it seems miles away and provides a feeling of seclusion and security that few businesses can. In addition to a tasty cup of coffee, you can also get a great slicer here. A chalkboard near the entrance defines a slicer as an “open faced sandwich Tuscan bread toasted to perfection with a delicious choice of combinations’ for those of you who were wondering. With just one visit you will see that The Alchemist certainly belongs on this list.

5. UNDERGROUNDS COFFEEHAUS

3. JAVA BOYS

2230 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors Surrounded by popular bars and nightclubs, it’s easy for a small coffee shop to get lost in the party sauce. However, Java Boys does a great job at providing an escape from the noise and some recovery from the hangovers. Located on the famed Wilton Manor strip, Java Boys will provide delicious breakfast options, good coffee, and a staff that will welcome you with open arms (literally, if you really need a hug). Here is where you will find refreshing smoothies, funny debates, and maybe even a date if you’re looking for one. Due to its comfort, proximity to the action, and always chill feel - Java Boys simply had to be on our list.

3020 N Federal Hwy, STE A, Fort Lauderdale “This is like your Indie home away from your Indie home,” says barista Austin Rodriquez. While that is an interesting way to describe the laid back, welcoming feel of this hidden gem, there’s much more to it than its comfortable sofa and pink blanket. Conveniently located near the Coral Ridge Mall, this coffee shop resembles a pixie dream house straight out of your imagination. The walls are decorated by images of Elvis (yes, Elvis), old movie posters, and colorful images that will provoke nostalgia and awe. If you’re looking for something refreshing and light to get you through a summer day, drop in and ask for a Grasshopper Latte. Complete with two shots of espresso, mint syrup, and a boost of chocolate, this is just one of the highlights of a diverse and unique menu. The shop is also decorated by several bookshelves for those who are looking for something good to read. Nestled in the “Hard Fiction” section we couldn’t help but notice Dean Koontz’s Your Heart Belongs to Me. Drop by this coffee house and it may just win your heart. AUGUST 18, 2016 17

Adrian, Joshua, Kyle & Tyler relaxing in the Serenity Room.

Recently, part of the magical Gym Bar team decided to take a break from the nightlife in search of relaxation. Thanks to the 5 Elements Spa and Longevity Center, they didn’t have to go too far to find their little piece of paradise. In fact, all they had to do was hold hands and walk directly across the street. The conveniently located spa, which takes a holistic approach to better health and well being, pampered the team with an array of services that rejuvenated their minds and bodies. “It was created to have a spa ambiance and give you a true spa experience, said Spa Manager, Phil Benitez. “We believe that with the combination of the quality therapists that we have and our life coaches, we bring a wonderful experience to our guests,” he added. Since opening just under two months ago, the spa has received a warm welcome from people in the community. If you were to take one visit to the spa, you would quickly understand why. As you enter, you will be greeted by shades of brown and green everywhere, giving you a sense of nature and serenity that will put you at ease. When you add in the calming music coming from the state-of-the-art sound system, you will quickly transition into a more Zen state of mind. And that’s 20 AUGUST 18, 2016

just the beginning. Just wait until you see all that the spa has to offer. A short tour will lead you down a manicured hallway to a clean and spacious room that was recently built. Here is where the spa plans to offer “mani-pedis” to its customers in the coming weeks. Next, you will see the Thai Room – a dimly lit room with oriental designs on what resembles a yoga mat, ideal for stretching and compressions. According to Benitez, one of the more popular rooms thus far has been the Couples Suite. Complete with a gigantic Japanese soaking tub, a large glass shower, two comfortable beds and all of the luxury and glamor that you would expect from a high-end spa, this is a perfect way to show your appreciation to your significant other. If that’s not enough, maybe you will fall in love with the comfy and welcoming lounge area. Highlighted by its soft yellow chairs and bold statue, this area will do wonders to free you from the stress of your busy day. With a state-of-the-art sauna, steam room and locker room, the spa has everything to make your day memorable. “It really is a customized experience, “ said Benitez of the suites. “We try to do whatever we can to make your stay at

the spa comfortable and enjoyable. If it’s your birthday we will bring you cup cakes. It is something that you can reserve for 2-5 hours or an entire day if you prefer. We are all about doing whatever we can to make our guests happy.”

Beat the heat facial

With such an assortment of options, the 5 Elements staff will likely be able to do just that. The spa offers massages, body scrubs, Thai massages, deep tissue treatments, Swedish body rubs, sports massages and a detoxifying ritual called raindrop therapy that combines massage and stretching. Benitez says that regardless of what ailments you are experiencing, the 5 Elements Spa and Longevity Center will be able to help. If your body is sore and aching from the gym, Pain Management Specialist John Romano may be able to help with Micro Current Point Stimulation or a series of treatments geared toward your problem areas. Or maybe you just need a break from the everyday grind and you want to kick back and release with a warm massage therapist like Nickki Borgesano. No matter what the case may be, 5 Elements will provide you with the change of pace that you’re looking for at an affordable rate. Drop by sometime and see for yourself how 5 Elements is reinventing the spa experience. N

MILK MONEY Local entrepreneur set to rock Fort Lauderdale with new creation.

I

went to meet Blaise McMackin on a Thursday morning at Warsaw Coffee. As you will learn, the modern coffee shop, is one of his many passions of late. He said that he was working on a new project-one that was going to make a big impact on Fort Lauderdale. Naturally, I couldn’t wait to hear about it. At 8:45am, the shop was buzzing with energy. There were more than a dozen customers, but nobody seemed to be in a rush. In fact, everyone seemed to be at home. MacBooks and well-dressed men with tattoo filled arms decorated the coffee house where bold mugs of coffee scented the room. The airy shop seemed to provide the perfect location for business meetings, school projects and day-off chill sessions. At first glance, it was clear that McMackin had struck gold with Warsaw. The sense of calmness he possessed as he walked around the room showed that he knew he had something special. “I don’t think there are nearly enough meeting places in Fort Lauderdale,” said McMackin, sitting back confidently in a metal chair, Almond Latte in hand. “I’d always want to sit with friends of mine and we always had a hard time finding a place that wasn’t too small. That was the initial motivation behind Warsaw,” he said. It was just over two years ago when McMackin and his business partner, Scott Ojeda, found the space that would become Warsaw. Conveniently located near Wilton Manors on NE 13th Street, the pair had a vision that they couldn’t wait to bring to life. They then invested 5 and a half months into reshaping and renovating the building into what has blossomed into Warsaw today.

WE WANTED A PLACE WITH A DECENT ENVIRONMENT THAT WAS OPEN AND AIRY WITH A LOT OF LIGHT AND A COZY FEELING “We wanted a place with a decent environment that was open and airy with a lot of light and a cozy feeling. I know that part of it is just branding something and getting something out of the ordinary and something new,” said McMackin. “I feel like it is something that you would find in New York and San Francisco. We didn’t really have anything like it here.” 26 AUGUST 18, 2016

AM I OBSESSED WITH BUSINESS? NO, I THINK OBSESSED MEANS THERE’S A

DISPROPORTIONATE BALANCE WITH YOUR LIFE

McMackin, who grew up in suburban Long Island, New York, is the youngest of six. He chose the name Warsaw to honor his Polish heritage (Warsaw is the name of the capital of Poland) and of course, because he knew it would be part of a memorable brand. With his father immersed in the world of real estate, McMackin was accustomed to painting, fixing things and working on several projects at once. Little did he know, helping out his dad would groom him for all that he is balancing today. This leads us to the latest project that the hardworking entrepreneur is eager to unveil. Get ready for Milk Money! While Warsaw has already became a staple amongst coffee lovers in the city, McMackin is excited about the evolution and growth of the business. In the coming months, he is gearing up to introduce Fort Lauderdale to Milk Money, a 7,000 sq. feet craft cocktail bar that he hopes will rejuvenate the city and usher in a new era of business. But don’t worry Warsaw enthusiasts, your favorite coffee hangout isn’t going anywhere. Instead, just think of it as the same unique coffee house with several amazing add-ons that will only make your experience better.

McMackin says that he plans to incorporate all of Warsaw into the Milk Money brand. He hopes it will be the perfect blend of the cozy coffee house that so many have grown to love and a comfortable lounge/bar area that changes the scope of nightlife fun in and around Fort Lauderdale. Once completed, customers will be able to enter through Warsaw and walk through the coffee shop directly into Milk Money. The two will work together instead of being separate entities. Once a customer enters Milk Money, they will experience a full service upscale bar, comfy lounge areas and a welcoming staff. Open from 7am-1am daily, the bar will allow you to have an earlier start on the party than you may have imagined. But you won’t have to get a cocktail that early unless you absolutely want to. Milk Money will serve refreshing cold pressed juices and smoothies in the day in an environment that’s serene and chill yet cool and current at the same time. “Milk Money will have like a 35 seat bar and it’s an exceptionally big bar. The bar will be a full service one where you can sit at the bar and get breakfast such as omelets and pancakes or whatever you like. You can come in and get food made from scratch for lunch that will be fresh and we will even have some type of bar snacks in the evening to go along with our specialty cocktails,” said McMackin, as his eyes widened with excitement. AUGUST 18, 2016 27

28 AUGUST 18, 2016

But wait there’s more, while the first stage of Milk Money is set to open by December 2016, the final phase set for early 2017 will also include an art gallery, barbershop and a high ends men clothing store. The line of businesses will mean new options for customers to enjoy and new job opportunities for those seeking employment. “There are some great businesses in Fort Lauderdale like Rhythm and Vine, Louie Bossi and a few others that have opened but I don’t feel like there’s enough bars in Fort Lauderdale with meeting spaces and relatively quiet music where you can get a nice drink in a good environment. I feel like there’s a lot of opportunity in Fort Lauderdale. Milk Money will be welcoming and has parking and all of the things you want really,” he added. While the creation of Milk Money certainly seems to have McMackin inspired, it is just one of the businesses that he is currently juggling. In just a few weeks, The Beer Plant, a vegan beer bar concept, will be opening in Austin, TX. The gastropub is the brain trust of McMackin and his brother, Ray. In the spring of 2017, G21, a personal training gym complete with auditorium spinning, therapy rooms for massage, flotation tanks and a juice bar is set to open. The gym, which he is opening with partners Renato Silva, Andrew Garthwaite and Kimberly Wong, will be one-of-a-kind in the Oakland Park neighborhood. Also slated for an early 2017 debut is BarRita, a two story Mexican restaurant with a roof top patio at 1401, S Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. Despite having to balance so many projects at once, McMackin says that the pleasure of doing business is what drives him and he doesn’t see it as an obsession. “Am I obsessed with business? No, I think obsessed means there’s a disproportionate balance with your life. I don’t think I am obsessed at all. I have plenty of time. I travel and do plenty of things with my life besides business, “ he said. When asked what advice he would give to aspiring business owners and budding entrepreneurs, the renaissance man of sorts added, “Be well capitalized. Find a good location with parking in a safe area and think outside the box as far as concepts. Also, whatever business you open find the best talent you can afford and share! If you’re going to be profitable, share on the profits.” If his track record is any indication, Milk money is bound to be a profitable venture that all of Fort Lauderdale can share and enjoy. In just a few months, you’ll have Milk Money. N AUGUST 18, 2016 29

3 SPOTS FOR THE NIGHTLIFE SEEKER

F

or some, vacation isn’t all about relaxation. Or, I should say, some people are at their most relaxed with a couple vodka-sodas in their gut, twirling on a dance floor or floating like a butterfly among throngs of fellow revelers on a bar’s smoking patio. For these individuals—gay men who seek drunks, DJs, drag queens and various other creatures of the night while on holiday—there are cities the world over whose nightlife scenes are the stuff of legend. These are but a few tried-and-true favorites. SAN FRANCISCO The Bay Area—a prime locale for the Angeleno who only has the weekend to spare— has a ton to offer those seeking boozy nights amidst a new crowd of hunky men. Much like our own SoCal city, it boasts two markedly different gay scenes, made up of West Hollywood-like gay ghetto The Castro and the more rough-and-tumble neighborhood of SoMa.Book your travel right and you’ll start your evening out with one of Peaches Christ’s legendary stage parodies at the Castro Theatre. Past productions—generally starring Drag Race queens—have included She-Devil, Sister Act and Hocus Pocus. Those looking to spend the rest of their evening in the Castro can hop between 440 for draft beers, Badlands for a sweaty dance floor or popular video bar Midnight Sun for Top 40 and a drag performance. Those seeking beards, leather and even cheaper drinks can head South of Market to mainstays SF Eagle, Lone Star Saloon and the Heklina-owned club (which also hosts the weekly drag night Mother) Oasis. Come 2 a.m., those willing to carouse with heteros (and pay a stiff cover) can party ‘til morning at The Endup, open til 8 a.m. on weekends. LONDON It’s hardly a surprise that one of the world’s most vibrant destinations would also house a thrilling nightlife scene.

Whether you’re seeking a casual night out at the pub (head to The Duke of Wellington in Soho or the nearby Comptons, both of which are perfect pre-gaming spots), a night of dancing to the gay divas (you’ll want to join the young crowd at G-A-Y Bar) or a night of campy drag, live music or cabaret (all of which is offered at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern), you can find it here. The one event not to be missed by those seeking hairy men and hedonism—and, really, who isn’t?—is Horse Meat Disco, a party that sees the world-famous DJ collective take over the dance floor of Eagle London every Sunday night. It’s an assuredly packed crowd, and a guaranteed good time. MONTRÉAL You’d be hard-pressed to find a city more ready, willing and able to party than Montréal during its annual Black & Blue Festival, which coincidentally celebrates its quarter-century anniversay this October. But the city is a lively one after dark nonetheless; simply head to the gay village of Saint Catherine Street (a pedestrian street from May to September) to have every type of night out at your disposal. You’ll find drag each night of the week at Cabaret Mado, which doubles as a popular dancing spot. Those seeking raunch and fetish gear should head to L’Aigle Noir (the city’s own Eagle establishment), and head back for a Sunday afternoon spent on the rooftop patio. Take your pick of hip-hop, house or pop music at Complexe Sky, Canada’s largest gay club, which offers four floors and a pool and hot tub on the terrace. And those looking for the attention of male strippers—who regularly strip down completely and are quick to offer you a lap dance—should head to Campus or Stock Bar in the village. —S.H. MAJOR MISTAKES

HOLDING YOU BACK IN THE GYM

Not seeing the results of your hard work? Here are five possible reasons why. BY DAN WELDEN

Y

ou workout everyday for what seems like hours. You want to get ripped but seem to be making little to no progress, yet you go out and see others that appear to be growing in mass or gaining definition far faster than you. So you ask yourself, “What the hell am I doing wrong?” Here are 5 mistakes that may be holding up your progress.

1. NOT EATING BEFORE AND AFTER YOU WORKOUT

Yes, I get it. You want to lose weight, but starving yourself is not the solution. Think of your body like a vehicle. It needs fuel to operate. Additionally, if you are trying to gain muscle mass, you need to provide your body with adequate nutrition. You’ll want a protein packed meal before and after every workout. I would recommend eating approximately an hour before your workout and drinking a protein shake within 30 minutes after your workout.

2. NOT CHANGING UP YOUR ROUTINE

Many individuals fall into the habit of following the same routine for months. We’re comfortable with what we know and many of us are fearful of looking awkward trying something we have not mastered. However, when you do the same routine over and over, your body becomes accustomed to the exercises and growth tends to slow down or stop all together. To continually stimulate muscle development, you should consider switching up your routine every month or two. This includes trying new exercises, adding sets, even trying new group classes at your gym. By attending a group fitness class you can learn some new moves and maybe even meet Mr. Right. 36 AUGUST 18, 2016

FITNESS 3. OVERTRAINING

Some people will spend hours at the gym and actually start to see muscle mass and strength decrease. You could be overtraining. This can also happen if you train the same muscle group everyday. I usually recommend alternating musclegroups. One day focus on the upper half of your body and the next day focus on the lower half.

4. ALCOHOL

It’s fun to let loose on the weekends and have a drink or ten, but alcohol has a number of detrimental effects on the body including significantly lowering your testosterone levels. If you’re going to have a party night, try to schedule it to where your rest day is the next day and limit it to once a week. If you’re the type that drinks everyday, stop and find a new hobby. You’re not going to get the results you want and you’re damaging your body more than you think. It catches up to you, if it hasn’t already.

5. LACK OF SLEEP

NYC is a city that never sleeps. I often find myself getting minimal sleep due to my chaotic schedule and social obligations. I personally have noticed and impact on muscle development and have proactively taken steps to get in a few more hours of sleep a night. We should all aim to have at least eight hours of sleep per night. Many of us are up doing things that are not great for our body anyway. When we workout, we are basically breaking down our muscles. When we sleep, the muscles repair. So it is essential to get the appropriate amount of rest each night. This may require a significant lifestyle change for some. Aim for minor lifestyle modification and progress from there. Start with minor changes, like going to bed 15 minutes earlier than normal. Add 15 minutes of sleep every week until you get that extra hour or two you need to hit at least eight hours a night. N Follow Dan Welden on Instagram @Danwelden or visit danstotalfitness.com.
