JUNE 16, 2016 SMACK DOWN Noah Galvin has quickly apologized after a fiery interview in which he managed to insult Colton Haynes, Bryan Singer, Eric Stonestreet, and just about the entire LGBT entertainment community. The out 22-year-old is the star of ABC’s sitcom The Real O’Neals, playing a teenage boy who rocks his Catholic family when he comes out as gay. It’s pretty clear it’s going to get exciting when early on in the interview he describes David Blaine as “the weirdest fucking dude,” but that was just the beginning. He went on to call Colton Haynes “the worst,” before criticizing the way he came out, ““That’s not coming out. That’s fucking pussy bullshit,” Galvin said. “That’s like, enough people assume that I sleep with men, so I’m just going to slightly confirm the fact that I’ve sucked a dick or two. That’s not doing anything for the little gays but giving them more masturbation material.” THROWBACK THURSDAY Madonna celebrated Throwback Thursday last week by appearing

SORELY MISSED Gay porn star Chris Burke died at
his San Francisco home last week, and tributes have poured in. The young actor was relatively new to the adult film industry, but was a visible face in the kink community, and had appeared in videos for Kink.com, Bound Jocks, Guy Bone Media among others. His last film, for Bound Gods, was released just this week. It’s not yet known how he died, but friends have apparently said he passed away “suddenly” at his apartment in the Castro, San Francisco. INCLUSION ACT Laverne Cox and several Democratic members of Congress gathered to show their support on Capitol Hill for the LGBT Data Inclusion Act, which was proposed late last month by Arizona Rep. Raúl Grijalva. “Misinformation is allowed to be spread about transgender people because we don’t have actual data about who trans people are and our lived experiences,” Cox said Thursday during a news conference. “LGBT people exist, we are a vital part of the fabric of this country and we just want to be counted.”

There will be much to do that day including the Stonewall Village at Hagen Park Community Center (2020 Wilton Drive Wilton Manors FL 33305) from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and the Stonewall Parade on Wilton Drive at 6:00 pm. Sandwiched in between the Stonewall Village festivities and the spectacular Stonewall Parade is Stonewall Pride’s annual expo, which will have vendors of all sort from LGBT nonprofits to corporate supporters. t is on and popping at Progress Bar (2440 Wilton Drive Wilton Manors FL 33305; 954-533-4916) during Stonewall Pride this year. In association with the Impulse Group, the Fort Lauderdale club will be having a Pride Summerfest on its huge mega erected stage. Its headlining act and parade diva is the spitfire blazer Laganja Estranja from RuPaul’s Drag Race season six. It’s been two seasons since the rambunctious Laganja made her presence known on the adored Drag Race show. That might have been sometime ago but the statuesque diva made her everlasting mark with an unforgettable death drop entrance and flexible lip sync for your life. Those iconic moments have been seared into our memories but Laganja sure did leave us all wondering, “what’s she up to now?” We sat down with the man (Jay Jackson) behind the diva to catch up where he left off.

WHAT’S A lot of people commented on how young (immature you came across) on Drag Race. How would you say you’ve grown since your time on the show? I’ve grown so much. I’m sober now, for one. I run my business. I have learned how to take responsibility for my life and my journey. Without RuPaul, I would not be traveling the world promoting my brand and my dance. I am thankful for the business opportunities, and also the challenges that come along with my self-improvement.
How’s your friendship with Adore now? At DXP last month, Adore and I were able to have some quality time hanging out. We have both been so busy that we really don’t get to chill very often. It was a special moment to be real with my sister. What are some of the new projects you’re working on now? I released a cannabis joint collaboration called #LAhepburns, consisting of solventless ice-water hash and premium flower. I am also happy to announce that I am teaching dance classes (Laganja’s Dance School) with regular sessions in North Hollywood. We are also focusing more on my YouTube series (Ganja Smokes, Ask Ganja, and Dabbers Day Out). Is the handsome Jay seeing anyone special or just a something, something for right now? I have one guy in mind. He’s gorgeous and he knows how I feel (about him). I get butterflies when he texts me. But nothing is official. Now, onto the important questions. Your high heel maneuvering is on point; it’s amazing what you can do in heels. How does someone master their heel game like you?

RYAN TOWNSEND Embodies Matthew Shepard In Musical Drama BY JAMEER BAPTISTE
T
he stage production organization Opera Fusion will be debuting their musical drama Not In My Town as a sanctioned Stonewall Pride event at the Sunshine Cathedral (1480 SW 9 Ave Fort Lauderdale FL 33315) on Friday, June 17. Actor, singer Ryan Townsend has the delicate role of playing Matthew Shepard in the musical drama. The talented 27 year old has been preparing for this role for a majority of his life. As a young boy, Townsend became a thespian out of the desire to be with his friends who all were interested in the arts. That desire transformed into an allconsuming passion for the go-getter actor. He was in every school band, choir, show choir and all of his school productions. Townsend then toted his passion all the way from Philadelphia where he was born and raised, to Miami where he received his master's degree in music from the University of Miami in 2015.

Townsend’s life now is still consumed with his passion for the arts. He is a proud voice teacher who insists that it is his students who inspire him all the time. When he’s not acting as the “Voice Papa,” he is securing gigs and making his mark on the thespian world - and jogging, doing yoga, hanging with his cat and indulging in his obsession for everything Disney. With so much training and experience under his belt, we wondered how Townsend is preparing for his upcoming lead role.
BRIEF ENCOUNTER
How are you preparing for your role as Matthew Shepard?
sentence, I’m thrilled to be portraying Matt even if it is slightly intimidating.
To get in the head and body of an actual human of history is daunting. You want to do it justice. He wasn’t a caricature, he wasn’t a fictional being, he was a person who walked on this Earth. I take this as an amazing opportunity to try and communicate the realness that was Matt. I’ve watched every single movie portrayal available, I’ve read the news articles and seen the TV coverage of his stay in the hospital and his funeral, but the most helpful media has been his mother’s book, The Meaning of Matthew. The movies give a picture of who Matt was but I’m watching an actor playing Matt. His mother’s words are probably the most accurate description of how Matt functioned - his strengths, his weaknesses, his passions, his motivations.
What can you tell us about this musical drama?
What does it mean to you personally to be betraying Matthew Shepard? Like I said, it’s daunting. Anytime you’re given a real person to play, there’s a level of “getting it right.” Matt Shepard is viewed as an icon for LGBT rights, but more importantly he was a living person. A person who was outgoing, friendly, generous, intelligent, reckless, foolish and damaged. I’m honored to be telling his story. If I’m not wrong, I think this is the first time Matt will be on stage, which I think is awesome! So to answer your question in a
Although Matt is the subject matter of the show, it truly is about his best friend Romaine Patterson and how she has inspired countless people to stand up to bullying and to fight for love and the right to love. There are some scenes that make me cry, some that make me laugh, and one particular scene, which terrifies me. How do you embody Matthew’s character without getting caught up in the emotions of it all? Well, as an actor, you can’t get caught up in the thought of “this is so sad, poor Matt” that’s poor storytelling. That’s experiencing. My job isn’t to experience. It’s to tell. It’s your job as the viewer to experience. Are there any unique rituals or superstitions you adhere to before a casting and/ or performance? I used to eat carrots. But now I always make sure that I’m hydrated, well rested, and fed. Before I enter the room or the stage, I try to focus on what I, the character, am doing and what is my purpose.

Things You Must Do in South Africa

t’s a lofty claim, but no country on Earth packs as powerful a travel punch as South Africa. With incredible wildlife, breathtaking scenery, posh resorts, a captivating history and its dynamic mashup of cultures, this is the sort of place you’ll want to return to again and again to discover more— but since it’s not exactly next door (factor in a solid day of flying each way from L.A.), you’ll want to make the most of your first visit. Here are seven things you absolutely must do.

1. Cape Town, Bottom to Top
Cape Town is South Africa’s shining star for travelers, and no wonder: Its mountainbackdropped seaside setting is picture perfect, its weather is gorgeous virtually year-round, and its people are warm, culturally diverse and beautiful. The city’s also home to fantastic beaches, a throbbing gay scene, unique neighborhoods like the colorful Bo-Kaap, and some of the world’s best restaurants and cafes, like Test Kitchen and Truth. What’s more, intimate contact with whales, penguins and great white sharks is always within easy reach. For a special treat, check out the stunning views of the city from on high with a cable car ride to the top of the iconic Table Mountain, or you can hike up Lion’s Head at sunrise or Signal Hill at sunset.
2. Track the Big Five
A proper South African holiday should factor in at least three days for safari, where you’ll have the chance to spot some of the world’s most exciting animals living (and yes, sometimes eating other) in their natural habitats. The ultimate safari checklist is the so-called Big Five (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard), and while nothing’s ever certain on safari, you’ll have a good shot at seeing them all at properties like Jaci’s Tree Lodge in the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve, or at the gloriously renovated Singita Ebony Lodge,

the fabulous original Singita property on the Sabi Sand Game Reserve (which shares an unfenced border with Kruger National Park).
3. Take Advantage of the Exchange Rate
While top-end properties like Singita would’ve been out of reach for most Americans a few years ago, the current exceptional exchange rate (now about 15 South African rand to 1 U.S. dollar, double what it was in 2012) means that you can treat yourself to some of South Africa’s—and indeed the world’s—most incredible and exclusive accommodations. Cape Town’s phenomenal Ellerman House offers impeccable service, rooms to die for with unmatched ocean views and an extraordinary South African art collection. The Delaire Graff Estate in the wine country’s Stellenbosch, meanwhile, is a heavenly oasis of total indulgence, with huge rooms (each with marble bath and its own private heated plunge pool) and a phenomenal spa. Fine dining is also far easier on the wallet than it would be at home, like at Johannesburg’s fabulous Winehouse restaurant—gay-owned, and completely inspired by a French painting of Amy Winehouse. On the more traditional side, high tea at Cape Town’s “Nellie”, aka the Belmond Mount Nelson, is a refined but relaxed not-to-miss classic.
TRAVEL 4. Visit a Township
Catch the town’s hop-on hop-off Wine Tram and visit up to eight fantastic local wine estates, and your transfer to and from Cape Town can even be booked as part of the same package.
5. Learn a Thing or Two at Local Museums
Cape Towners may try to convince you that Johannesburg, the country’s largest city, is too dirty and dangerous to be worth your time. Don’t believe them. Joburg may indeed have some very unsafe sections, but the city’s also tangibly alive with creativity and excitement, and so large and sprawling (not unlike L.A. in that way) that you need never come near its no-go areas. First-timers to Joburg are often struck by how green the city is, and many formerly sketchy neighborhoods, like Newtown at the city center, are rapidly transforming into hotspots. Downtown’s Braamfontein section is the site of The Orbit, the city’s most popular jazz club, as well as Saturday’s wildly popular Neighbourgoods Market. On Sunday the place to be is the Arts on Main warehouse complex in Maboneng, where you’ll find a wonderfully diverse mix of the city’s most beautiful, arty and hip hanging out. The more collegetownish Melville, just outside the city center, is home to an eclectic cluster of shops and venues, including 27 Boxes, a newly opened small-shop mall made of shipping containers.
Put all that fanciness into perspective with a visit to a South African township or two. Several respectful (i.e., non-gawky) township tours are available, including those offered by the excellent philanthropic group Uthando and bookable through tour experts Jacada Travel. No township is as tied to South Africa’s history as the largest of them all, Johannesburg’s Soweto, where Vilikazi Street was the onetime home to both President Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu. Numerous Soweto tours are now available, including by bus, bike and even Segway.
South Africa’s history is quite complex, often disturbing, and ever-evolving, but a few key museums will go a long way in helping you better understand how the country got where it is today. Cape Town’s District Six Museum chronicles the forced removal of an entire nonwhite downtown neighborhood in the 1970s, while Johannesburg’s excellent Apartheid Museum uses a variety of media to go into deep detail about how apartheid started, thrived, caused tremendous suffering, nearly tore the country apart and finally ended in 1994. The struggle for gay and lesbian rights in South Africa is neatly incorporated into the mix, and through mid-June the museum is even hosting a special exhibition about LGBTI people and their relationships to their faiths.

South Africa’s incredible wines are commanding more and more global attention, and its dazzling wine country starts just about half an hour east of Cape Town at the gorgeous Stellenbosch, also the nation’s second oldest town. Another half-hour eastward puts you in the ultra-charming Franschhoek, first settled by French Hugonots in the late 17th century.
Of course no man is as important to South Africa’s history as its first post-apartheid president, Nelson Mandela, who died in 2013 and whose memory is still very fresh in the hearts and minds of today’s South Africans—not unlike how it must’ve been for just-post-Washington early Americans. Scores of sites throughout the country pay homage to Mandela, and there’s none more important than Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town. Former fellow prisoners lead moving tours of the building where Mandela was held captive in a tiny cell for 18 of his 27 years in state captivity.

Rather than starving yourself by trying some radical fad diet, instead cut back on calories sensibly by practicing portion control. The concept is not new, and much has been written about it recently, especially in this age of Big Gulps, super sizing, and all you can eat

buffets. Portion control doesn’t mean eating miniscule tidbits of food. It is a wonderful nutritional principle that can teach you to eat healthier as you reduce portion sizes, cut calories, and lose fat. Without leaving you feeling deprived and famished, you’ll be delighted at the effect portion control will have on your waistline. Here’s how to get started.
FITNESS »Before a meal or grabbing a snack, try drinking a 16 ounce glass of water. Often when you’re feeling hungry, it’s because you’re dehydrated. Water will fill your belly and make you less likely to overeat. During hot summer months, chill H2O and squeeze fresh lemon or lime in it for a refreshing treat.
»Portion control be-
gins as you set the table. Use smaller plates and bowls for soups, salads and entrees. Researchers have found that people serve themselves more reasonable portions and eat less if the size of dinnerware is scaled down. Also, the color of your plate influences how much you eat. Select plates that have a color contrast to the food you’re having at mealtime. For example, you’re more likely to serve up a smaller wedge of lasagna on a stark white plate. The contrasting white plate serves as a reality check for the amount you are about to scarf down.
»Ambiance means a lot.
Make mealtimes an event, even if it’s just you. Dim the lights, turn off the TV, phone and computer. Listen to relaxing music. Chew slowly, savor the food’s taste and texture, put down your knife and fork after each bite and sip water to make your meal last longer. Eat at a leisurely pace and refrain from gulping and gobbling on the run and you’re bound to eat less.
»Have soup, a salad or both.
Before you tackle your main course, have soup, a salad or both. Starting with one or both of these appetizers may help reduce overall caloric intake by 20%. A broth-based soup with lots of veggies and or a green salad with a low-fat dressing are your best bets.
»Make your meals more about veggies
and you’ll fill up more quickly. Lean protein sources like chicken or fish are vital for every nutritional plan, but vegetables add fiber, vitamins and much less fat. Carbohy-
drates are an important source of energy, but rethink the way you use grains and starches. These foods are calorie dense, so less is better. Instead of eliminating bread, rice, and potatoes altogether, substitute brown rice, whole grains, and yams.
»As far as snacking goes, never eat from
the bag or box. Determine serving size, pour it into an appropriate bowl and put away the rest. If you have a sweet tooth after supper, brew a low-calorie tea like peppermint or berry zinger.
