COMMENT OF THE WEEK:

“Actually, I’m here to interview you,” Hillary Clinton said to Ellen DeGeneres on her show. “I know that you have a lot to contribute and I would make you really be in charge of returning kindness to America – something that you care a lot about.”

JUNE 02, 2016 WE HAVE A WINNER Sexually fluid Nyle DiMarco took home another reality competition win last week, when he walked home with the coveted mirror ball trophy after winning the latest season of Dancing with the Stars. The deaf hunk rose to stardom after winning America’s Next Top Model last year, and was fan favorite from early on during this last season of DWTS. But is he single? The 27-year-old told People Now that he is not currently dating anyone: "I am very single. A relationship is not a priority of mine. But I'm hoping soon enough." DRAG PROPOSAL Love was in the air at the RuPaul’s Drag Race “Battle of the Seasons” tour stop in New York last Wednesday night. Even though she wasn’t performing, Phi Phi O’Hara surprised her fiancé with an adorable proposal fit for a queen. “I knew from that moment that my forever was standing right in front of me. POLITICAL WARFARE Democratic Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders tried his best to remove former 32-year-congressman Barney Frank from his role in the upcoming Democratic National Convention. Sander’s political camp sighted that Frank’s deep seeded hatred for the candidate and his supporters makes him bias, therefore, incapable. But the DNC had Frank’s back rejecting Sander’s attempt based on the fact that the gay congressman violated no rules and was elected fairly to the committee. EYE’S UP HERE John Snow is over being just a sex symbol for Hollywood. In a recent interview, Game of Thrones star Kit Harington made his opinion known that men in the acting industry are

suffering from sexism just like the women. The curly-haired, rock hard abs actor feels demeaned when he is asked to take his clothes off during a photoshoot. Harington feels so strongly about the subject that he goes so far as to say that if his looks were the only reason why he received gigs in Hollywood he would quit. DISNEY FAIRY NIGHTMARE The once adorable child star, now The View’s infamous talk show cast member speaks to the It Gets Better organization about her experience while acting as a Disney star. Raven-Symoné says she struggled with her sexuality and coming out because of the pressure she received at a young age to do what was best for her brand. They ingrained such self-hatred in her that she even detested Ellen DeGeneres when she came out. But after removing herself temporarily from the industry and finding love she in turn learned to love herself.

BONE ISLAND: Roam Free In Key West

12

WHAT’S

C

alling all naturists to Key West! Coming this July, Key West will become home to all those who like to live and party in the buff. It’s all thanks to one man who took his love for the Au Natural to a public forum. Dean Townsend has a deep passion for his bare skin--so much so that he couldn’t help but seek out environments in which he could express himself freely. One day over ten years ago, he found his bare buns on a nude cruise, which arose a grand scheme in his head. Once he disembarked from his exhibitionist cruise, he put the wheels in motion to bring the freeing affair on dry land in good ole Key West. He made his rounds and talked to business owners and within no time he organized his first ever Bone Island event that took place in December of 2006. Although Key West was already known to the gays to have clothing optional guesthouses, Townsend took it a couple steps further. He envisioned an environment of total nudity all day, everyday and during all event festivities. The first Bone Island was a weekend of pool parties, night owl dancing, parasailing and snorkeling all while in the buff. The 35 to 40 guys who showed up, all primarily from Florida, completed Townsend dream. But that was only a small nut compared to the explosion that was soon to occur.

dence at non-gay specific hotels. The July event always tends to be a bigger turnout than the December event, which still racks in hundreds of partygoers. And no need to fear shrinkage, because winter rarely, if ever, rears its chilling head in tropical Key West. No cover up needed, or allowed for that matter. Townsend learned years ago that a no clothing policy rather than a clothing optional one tended to make the leery and timid more inclined to disrobe, since everyone else is free of fabric. Townsend has thought of everything including clothes checks for all nighttime events. P.S. No camera use of any kind. There’s never random picture taking allowed. The two week-long nude fests encompass nightly pool parties at different gay resorts, pedal boarding, catamaran rides and sometimes yoga, body painting and sports activities. It’s always a new array of festivities at every Bone Island. However, there are three consistencies since conception: night events, pool parties and Mr. Naked Key West who wins cash, a couple complimentary night’s stays, a bar tab and a sash by audience applauds. If you can’t make it on July 6 – 10, plan a trip to bare it all on December 1 - 4. Passes go on sale the first week of June for July’s Bone Island. Go to nakedkeywest.squarespace.com to purchase your pass. N ---Jameer Baptiste

“What’s great is people come from all over the world,” added Townsend. “It interesting, every year we always seem to get one person from Japan and not the same guy.” The event attracts so many attendees that they sell out all the gay guesthouses to the point of which the Bone Islanders take resi-

Now on the horizon of Bone Island’s tenth year, more than 300 naturists’ men descend on the small island to rejoice in pure nakedness. And it’s not once a year but twice a year that hundreds of nudists make their way to the freeing island. What was once known as Key West’s major down time in tourism, July and December, have now become serious money days thanks to the influx of Bone Islanders.

FITNESS

EXERCISE AND DIET MYTHS THAT ARE KEEPING YOU FROM REACHING YOUR GOALS BY TONY EDGE

41

W

hen it comes to getting results physically speaking in the gym, everyone is always looking for the latest 'diet craze' or 'hottest exercise routine.' Many people in our culture are looking to get the best results in the shortest time possible. This leads to many myths and shortcuts that are many times very pervasive and difficult to dispel. In this month's column, I'm going to expose these myths and help you cut through much of the B.S. to help you get results! YOU CAN WORKOUT AT THE GYM SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK AND THEN EAT WHATEVER YOU WANT. I've said this before and I'll say it again: ANY physical goal that you might have-whether you go to a gym, are a runner, swimmer, etc.--is dependent on your nutrition. Around 70% of any goal is what you eat/drink/put in your body. The best trainers, the hottest new 'fad' exercise routine ( ABCFit, G80X, etc.), or the newest cutting-edge supplement won't do a DAMN thing for you if you spend the rest of the day after your workout eating food like pizzas, hotdogs, pies, pastries, or, worst still, consuming them

42

along with alcohol. Listen to your body and eat when you’re hungry to the point of being satisfied. SINCE I'M LOOKING TO LOSE WEIGHT, I'LL JUST BUY ALL OF THESE DIET/NONFAT/SUGAR FREE FOODS AND BEVERAGES. I've had heated debates with people over this one over the years, but now there are many studies that have come out to back up my original claims. Before becoming a personal trainer, I was an avid gum chewer and also consumed about 6-10 glasses per week of a well known mass-market powdered 'sugar free' drink that you could mix with water. While working in retail and going to the gym 2-3 times per week, I ballooned up from 190 lbs to 246 lbs (around 45 pounds of that being body fat). One weekday after leaving my job, I felt a migraine coming on and rushed home to take my prescription pill to curtail the episode. Not only did it not work, I wound up taking about 3 other over-the-counter meds to try to stop it. About 16 hours later after losing every bit of food in my stomach

FITNESS

from the previous day and not even being able to keep any water down, a friend was nice enough to come over and drive me to the hospital. The doctor in the E.R. the popped an IV into my arm to re-hydrate me and gave me a few CC's of morphine along with a photocopy sheet of a list of 'triggers' for migraines. About halfway down this list were 'artificial sweeteners.' After cutting the products out of my diet, not only did I lose weight but the migraines also ceased. According to Mercola.com, "research shows that 'aspartame worsens insulin sensitivity to a greater degree then sugar. In addition they may also promote weight gain by tricking your body into thinking it will receive sugar (calories); when the sugar doesn't come, then carb cravings can result. Also they tend to cause weight gain by disrupting your intestinal microflora, thereby raising your risk of both obesity and diabetes." ALL CALORIES ARE THE SAME. Yes I know what most people that are avid calorie counters will say, "But Tony 100 calories from broccoli is the same as 100 calories from a piece of pizza right?" While it's true

that all calories have the same amount of energy, different foods are processed different ways in the body. Also something to keep in mind is that different macro-nutrients have effects on various hormones in our body and can also mess with your hunger cravings ( see artificial sweeteners above). When you consume different foods consisting of varying ratios of protein, carbs and fat, your body processes them differently. The 'thermic effect of food' is a measure of how much different foods increase energy expenditure due to the energy required to digest, absorb and metabolize the nutrients. Sources vary slightly on exact numbers but they are--Fat: 2-3%, Carbs: 6-8% and Protein: 25-30%. In other words, a diet high in lean proteins can boost your metabolism by around 100 calories a day. I hope I've helped to clear up some of the pervasive myths that many of you have heard from your buddies at the gym or your friend that lost a ton of weight by 'crash dieting.' Just remember to do your research on any new 'fad' diet, exercise craze or supplement. Eat a well-balanced diet with as little processed ingredients as possible and drink plenty of water! See you in the gym! N ---Tony Edge

How To Treat Your Father BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

F

ather’s Day is a whole different ballpark when it comes to taking your dad out to eat (compared to the restaurant choices ideal for mom). Yes, times are changing but for a majority of us, we can’t honestly think that our fabulous drag queen brunches and truly expressive gay restaurants are dads’ comfort zones. Of course, he most likely is proud of who we are and celebrates us in our own skin. But we can only be so lucky to go so deep and expose him to our cherished culture without some awkwardness -- to those who can, you have a super dad. Ultimately, the day is intended to be all about him, right? So why not treat him to a celebratory meal that focuses the attention on him? Here are five Father’s Day designated restaurants that are sure to make him happy.

Atlantic Bar & Grill (AB&G) Restaurant 2800 S Ocean Blvd Palm Beach FL 33480; 561582-2800. This Palm Beach Four Seasons Hotel restaurant has summertime beach views that are simply magnificent to say the least. As if the picture perfect outdoor scenery isn’t enough, the food is impeccable and perfect for a dad. You just can’t go wrong with a McDaddy burger (that offers a dash of gay innuendo) with beer pairing. There’s seafood too.

For Father’s Day, there is a brunch special at $49.95 per person that includes pork from a slow roasted whole pig, a slider bar and more for two hour seatings.

The Capital Grille 2430 E Sunrise Blvd Fort Lauderdale FL 33304; 954-446-2000. The Galleria Mall has some great restaurants and The Capital Grille just so happens to be one of them. The upscale steakhouse will have you salivating with its Father’s Day Bone-In Tomahawk Ribeye. Can you say delicious? If your dad loves his wine, then this is the place to be as they have extensive labels of over 350 wines available for his drinking pleasure.

Area 31 270 Biscayne Blvd Way Miami FL 33131; 305424-5234. The Epic Hotel has created a rooftop terrace restaurants with incredible views overlooking the heart of Miami and the beauty ocean. Customary to the skyline dining experience will be unique creations by the restaurant’s chef Wolfgang Birk--this time for Father’s Day. It’s going to be a delectable meal of seasonal foods.

Bianca 1685 Collins Ave Miami Beach FL 33139; 305674-5752. The Delano Hotel in South Beach celebrates dads every year with a fantastic Father’s Day Brunch from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
