Wear Your Bravery On Your Sleeve BY JAMEER BAPTISTE Lady Gaga and Elton John are two exceptional artists who have repeatedly opened their hearts and wallets for good causes. It comes as no surprise that the two iconic celebrities have collaborated on a new charitable clothing line together. Love Bravery was launched across the country at select Macy’s department stores on May 19, 2016. Among other Macy’s hotspots, Miami, New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles all welcomed the clothing line. A total of 150 Macy’s stores will be exclusively carrying the charitable brand. It is available online at Macys.com. The collaborated effort by the two talented artists is predicated on their love for giving back and making the world a better place through their respective foundations. With the sale of the garments and accessories, Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation and The Elton John AIDS Foundation will raise much-needed funds to help their causes. “It’s an honor to team up with Sir Elton John to create this line with Macy’s,” said Lady Gaga. “We need to make the world a kinder and braver place where men and women

WHAT’S everywhere are empowered to live with compassion. That’s what Born This Way Foundation is all about, that’s what The Elton John AIDS Foundation is all about, and that’s what Love Bravery is all about.”

The designs are collaborative creations spawned from Lady Gaga’s sister, Natali Germanotta, and designer Brandon Maxwell. Every item sold exclusively at Macy’s will raise 25 percent for the Born This Way Foundation, which will then be split 50/50 with The Elton John AIDS Foundation. The limited-edition line will be sold through August 30 2016 in participating stores and online at macys.com. N

WHAT’S

A

new revolutionary iPhone and iPad app has just hit the market, adding a new tool to on-line relationships. Creator Adam Newell, one-time server at Liza Vanderpump’s SUR in West Hollywood, calls it an “all-inclusive video dating platform for people of all ages, sexualities and locations” and he means it. Known as The Coy App, the on-line dating release is the first to includes a profile distinction for the transgender community.. “There are a lot of dating apps out there right now, so it’s a crowded market. But the problem is that 54% of the user profiles on them are ‘catfish’”’—phony profiles from wannabes, Newell told the Next magazine. “Transgender users, because they are normally identified as a man or a woman, are isolated and at a disadvantage when it comes to in-person meets. Typically, they are not upfront about it, and it can lead to a dangerous and hostile environment.” The concept for the app came to Newell when his brother met a date on Tinder who turned out to be transgender and hadn’t revealed it before. “He felt cheated and deceived, but the date said, ‘I really didn’t have the option of selecting the category, and if I wrote in in my profile, it would be the first thing people see and judge me on.’” “What we did was create a dating platform that has a safer platform for all communities—both LGBT and straight. And not only are we all-inclusive, but after you set up your profile, you are required to make a 10-second ‘first impression’ video. What that does is put a voice to a face and within those ten seconds, you’ll know if this is a match.” Once the initial sign-up is completed, a user can determine the kind of person they want to search for with customizable specifics including age, gender, sexuality and distance. “When users find someone they like, they send their video as an introduction, and if the person is interest, they send their video in response,” Newell said. “If there is mutual interest, then the users can chat and build a connection.” This is not another version of Scruff or

Grindr, which are designed for quite hookups. The Coy App is all about the connection. Newell came out a year ago, before moving from Los Angeles to New York. Originally from the city of Royal Palm in Palm Beach County, Florida, 22-year-old Newell made several moves back and forth with family to Tennessee, before ultimate becoming an intern at E! Entertainment in LA. After eventually being hired as a model represented by Wilhelmina, he became involved with SUR and its owner Lisa Vanderpump, herself a huge LGBT advocate. Newell hopes to ultimately throw a launch party to benefit The Trevor Project, which provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to gay and lesbian youth ages 13-24. “I saw an opportunity to take some of the danger out of on-line dating, particularly for the transgender community who is more susceptible even in today’s more open environment. The Coy App is for them, and for you, and for everyone.” The free app is available for download through the Apple Store. No catfish allowed.--- Richard Hack

HERE IS MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE TO JACK SPARER. DURING THE WEEK, HE IS A BUTTONED UP BANKING EXECUTIVE WHO DOES LOTS OF GOOD FOR THE LGBT COMMUNITY. ON THE WEEKENDS, HE LETS LOOSE AND IS AN ADVENTUROUS THRILL SEEKER WITH A PENSION FOR TRYING NEW THINGS. WE PEELED BACK SPARER’S LAYERS ON THE BEACHES OF CENTRAL FLORIDA, OPENING HIM UP ONE QUESTION AT A TIME EXPOSING THE VIBRANCY OF HIS PRIDE.

BY ALEXANDER KACALA

Tell our readers what you do in Jacksonville? I do a wide variety of things throughout the week in Jacksonville. My days are pretty simple Monday through Friday; go to work at Deutsche Bank in the Fixed Income Settlement Department, then off to the gym, followed by cooking or dining with friends. Some of my favorite things to do during my free time are going to the beach, hiking at one of the nearby parks, watching movies with friends, and going out to the bars at night. I am pretty adventurous so I am always up for trying new things and seeing new places. Some spontaneous and different activities I enjoy with my friends include indoor ice skating (yes they have that here), playing laser tag, jumping in a trampoline gym, and jet skiing in the inter-coastal. What is your favorite thing to do in Central Florida? I have so many things that I enjoy doing in Central Florida so this a tough one. I would have to choose going to the fresh water springs such as Wekiwa or Blue Springs State Park. I love exploring the clear blue waters and floating down the springs in a tube. This was a tough choice when thinking about how much fun I also have going to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventures. Single or taken? I am currently single. Tell our readers what you look for in a partner. Although I am a pretty open book, I want someone who loves me in my entirety, and consequently someone I can trust to show my whole self to. As I hate conflict, I need a Continued on page 34 n

partner that's easy to get along with and into honest cooperation. I want someone with a great sense of humor, as I love to laugh and make jokes. I want someone kind, because how he treats others is just as important to me as how he treats me. I want someone who is humble, because I find arrogance appalling. I want someone I can talk to on a philosophic level, who can keep up with my random deep thoughts about life. It’s also important that my partner takes good care of themselves by eating right and staying active as I do. Lastly, I want someone driven to try and see and do new and better things. I am in a constant state of trying to improve myself and learn as much about the world as I can and I would like them to be able to experience that with me.

34

How do you stay involved with the LGBT community in Central Florida? Well as I live in Jacksonville in North Florida, it is tough to be involved in the LGBT community in Central Florida. In Jacksonville however, I am on a LGBT committee for Deutsche Bank. We do work throughout the year to ensure awareness of the LGBT community among the locations through various internal and external events. What are you looking forward to most at Gay Days? Last year was actually my first year to ever go to Gay Days in Orlando. I had a lot of new experiences and it was an absolute blast, which is why I have chosen to return this year. I think what most excites me about the upcoming weekend are all of the pool

parties during the day. I love meeting new people, being outside, dancing, and those events gave a great mixture of all those things. Typhoon Lagoon will also be a blast I’m sure! Where does your pride come from? As a child, I experienced a lot of hardship throughout school in regards to my sexuality. Although I was in the closet, many of the other students could tell that I was gay very early on in my life. I was bullied a lot for it and I remember countless times crying and thinking that I would never be accepted for who I am. So as most children do at an early age, I hid it and it affected me so much more than I knew at the time, all the way up until senior year of high school. I finally came out of the closet at 17 years of age and things began to

change. I realized that it is okay to be who I am, and people who don’t like it shouldn’t matter to me. I gained a confidence that I never had before; I began to smile more often, joke more often, and live life in a way I never was able to. My pride comes from all of those horrible experiences in public school that I had endured and from all of those bullies that called me names, telling me that I would never fit in, etc. I want change for anyone dealing with the same type of situation I was in, because it is a horrible way to live. Fortunately, the world is slowly changing for the better and the LGBT community is being accepted more and more every day--but homophobia is still out there. My hope is for that to disappear so that no one has to deal with what I went through. show. n

SPOTLIGHT

Andres Bustani A Tennis Player Comes Out BY JAMEER BAPTISTE 38

N

o matter how many sports stars come out of the closet, each revelation is a major victory for inclusiveness. But in the world of tennis, gay and out males are virtually nonexistent. All of which makes Andres Bustani all the more unique.

The now confident tennis star struggled in his youth with his sexuality. Born and raised in Mexico, the odds were stacked against Bustani when it came to expressing his true self. His native Spanish culture wasn’t very accepting of the gay lifestyle. His only cooping mechanism was to burying himself by focusing on his first true love--tennis “I began to play tennis when I was 8 years old,” recalled Bustani. “I quickly fell in love with the game; it gave me hope and a passion in life.” That passion helped him through his adolescent years leading up to high school at an age when he first realized what his internal feelings meant. When he was 13, Bustani moved with family from Mexico City to the town of Cancun. It was there that the teenage tennis enthusiast had a moment that would change his life forever--he accepted that he was attracted to men. Still too young to act on his sexual identity, and with no one close to confide in, he refocused his energy on tennis. His graduation and subsequent acceptance into an American sports college retriggered his suppressed feelings.

It was an internet connection that brought the two college boys together. One in Idaho and the other in New York, they managed to keep communication solid for six months and then finally got up the courage to meet faceto-face in New York. Adam showed Bustani a healthy dose of gay culture--an experience that enlightened him and helped build a strong bond between the two and officially made them boyfriends. Adam continued to encourage Bustani by giving him the love he desired and showing him that coming out isn't as frightening as he once thought. Just by witnessing the support and good nature of Adam's friends and family was all Bustani needed to gain the freedom to be himself. It allowed him to open up to his own friends and family one-byone starting with his female best friend. She took it in strive and the elated Bustani spread the news like wildfire. Fortunately, like the lucky few of us who have positive coming out experiences, Bustani found acceptance from everyone in his life from his tennis team to his family. Today, the new Andres Bustani lives happily playing tennis and cuddling close with his long-distance love, Adam.

“I couldn’t have been more excited to be recruited by Lewis Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho,” Bustani said. “I was aware that being gay in America was more common and accepted, and that gave me hope.”

The courageous young adult just finished his four-year degree in Industrial Electronic Technology with a minor in coaching. And he’s currently finishing up his last tennis season in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament. From there, he will be off to an unspecified national destination to assume the position of country club or resort tennis coach.

What the naïve Bustani failed to realize is that Idaho, circa 2010/21011, had little to no gay life. Especially not in Lewiston with its population of 32,000. And he had yet shaken the in-bred notion that jocks just weren't suppose to be gay. But cupid’s arrow gave the timid tennis star the nudge he needed to live in his truth. Adam his first and only boyfriend bestowed a sense of clarity within him.

The young 22-year-old Bustani still has a lot of life ahead of him but for right now his hopes and dreams have come to fruition. But he will not allow his good fortune to go to waste. He will tell his story to all who listen with the hope that everyone out there who think that they’re struggling with demons will realize that it’s just more of their beautiful truth. N

BOB THE DRAG QUEEN:

WINS 'RUPAUL'S DRAG RACE' SEASON 8 BY ALEXANDER KACALA

L

ast spring, I was sitting outside with some friends enjoying a happy hour seltzer on the corner of Locust and 12th Streets in Philadelphia. I saw my good friend Matt Beierschmitt down the street, so I waved. He had wanted me to DJ a drag show at the gay sports bar Tabu later that evening, so I wanted to find out the details. As I waved, a tall, bald headed, gay, black man with a septum piercing thought I was waving to him. I awkwardly corrected the mistake, and he continued to shake off the blunder with a hilarious facial expression I probably won’t ever forget. When I went upstairs to meet the cast of the show later that night, that same person was busy finishing his nails at the vanity. He was quiet, unassuming, and soft spoken. I recently realized who he was; Bob The Drag Queen. I already sort of became a fan from afar, seeing posts about the comedy queen on social media and hearing only great things about the performer. I fan girled out, and instantly realized my dumb ass gaff earlier that day, recognizing I was in the presence of a true gay great.

50

Who was mild-mannered and unassuming in the dressing room became larger than life on stage. Her performances only superseded my high expectations. With about 15 people in the audience, a lower turn out than usual, she performed an incredible show that you would think was being delivered to a sold out house at Carnegie Hall. Now, more than a year later, Bob The Drag Queen is on top. She seemingly swiftly sashayed through the competition on RuPaul's Drag Race with ease and finesse - similar to Bianca Del Rio two seasons ago. She claimed the title this season, winning the hearts and minds of not only America, but most importantly RuPaul herself. Bob has established herself as the best – and she is ready to take the world by storm this year with a new song, a documentary, and lots of live performances. We had the opportunity to ask Bob a few questions before her win.

BRIEF ENCOUNTER Your favorite memory from this season? My favorite memory this season was during the episode of “Untucked” when Chi Chi finds out Derrick Barry has two boyfriends. She was just like, “Oh that’s amazing, that really is.” Ha! I say that all the time now, “Oh that’s amazing, that really is.” Looking back, do you regret anything you said on camera? No no no, I think I hold myself to a great level of integrity. I may have spoken incorrectly when I said, “I hate Lorde.” That wasn’t true. I do not hate Lorde (the singer). Tell our readers about your new single "Purse First." My single is available on iTunes now! “Purse First” is inspired by Purse First – she was born on the first episode of Drag Race (season 8). And she stars in nearly every episode. Why do you think NY queens do so well in the competition? What's the competitive edge? Most of us were performers before we did drag, and we were already performing when we discovered drag. So we already had a leg up. We already knew how to be a performer, you know? My favorite quote of yours all season was, "Everything works out in the end. If it's not working out, it's not the end." Who inspired that and looking back, what does that mean to you now that you are here at the end? It’s something I read back when I was in high school, I think I first read it on a magnet. I just immediately thought the meaning is so important. It’s so important to remember that your life will always work out in the end, and that’s still how I feel now. Everything will work out in the end. What do you want your fans to know if you lose? If I lose, it’s not going to change my trajectory or my path. It will only change how I am introduced when I go on stage. What do you want your fans to know if you win? The win is not for me, it’s for the people.

EXERCISE AND DIET MYTHS THAT ARE KEEPING YOU FROM REACHING YOUR GOALS BY TONY EDGE

61

W

a

hen it comes to getting results physically speaking in the gym, everyone is always looking for the latest 'diet craze' or 'hottest exercise routine.' Many people in our culture are looking to get the best results in the shortest time possible. This leads to many myths and shortcuts that are many times very pervasive and difficult to dispel. In this month's column, I'm going to expose these myths and help you cut through much of the B.S. to help you get results!

62

FITNESS YOU CAN WORKOUT AT THE GYM SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK AND THEN EAT WHATEVER YOU WANT. I've said this before and I'll say it again: ANY physical goal that you might have--whether you go to a gym, are a runner, swimmer, etc.-is dependent on your nutrition. Around 70% of any goal is what you eat/drink/put in your body. The best trainers, the hottest new 'fad' exercise routine ( ABC-Fit, G80X, etc.), or the newest cutting-edge supplement won't do a DAMN thing for you if you spend the rest of the day after your workout eating food like pizzas, hotdogs, pies, pastries, or, worst still, consuming them along with alcohol. Listen to your body and eat when you’re hungry to the point of being satisfied. SINCE I'M LOOKING TO LOSE WEIGHT, I'LL JUST BUY ALL OF THESE DIET/NONFAT/SUGAR FREE FOODS AND BEVERAGES. I've had heated debates with people over this one over the years, but now there are many studies that have come out to back up my original claims. Before becoming a personal trainer, I was an avid gum chewer and also consumed about 6-10 glasses per week of a well known mass-market powdered 'sugar free' drink that you could mix with water. Prior to my move to Orlando, while working in retail and going to the gym 2-3 times per week, I ballooned up from 190 lbs to 246 lbs (around 45 pounds of that being body fat). One weekday after leaving my job, I felt a migraine coming on and rushed home to take my prescription pill to curtail the episode. Not only did it not work, I wound up taking about 3 other over-the-counter meds to try to stop it. About 16 hours later after losing every bit of food in my stomach from the previous day and not even being able to keep any water down, a friend was nice enough to come over and drive me to the hospital. The doctor in the E.R. the popped an IV into my arm to re-hydrate me and gave me a few CC's of morphine along with a photocopy sheet of a list of 'triggers' for migraines. About halfway down this list were 'artificial sweeteners.' After cutting the products out of my diet, not only did I lose weight but the migraines also ceased.

According to Mercola.com, "research shows that 'aspartame worsens insulin sensitivity to a greater degree then sugar. In addition they may also promote weight gain by tricking your body into thinking it will receive sugar (calories); when the sugar doesn't come, then carb cravings can result. Also they tend to cause weight gain by disrupting your intestinal microflora, thereby raising your risk of both obesity and diabetes." ALL CALORIES ARE THE SAME. Yes I know what most people that are avid calorie counters will say, "But Tony 100 calories from broccoli is the same as 100 calories from a piece of pizza right?" While it's true that all calories have the same amount of energy, different foods are processed different ways in the body. Also something to keep in mind is that different macro-nutrients have effects on various hormones in our body and can also mess with your hunger cravings ( see artificial sweeteners above). When you consume different foods consisting of varying ratios of protein, carbs and fat, your body processes them differently. The 'thermic effect of food' is a measure of how much different foods increase energy expenditure due to the energy required to digest, absorb and metabolize the nutrients. Sources vary slightly on exact numbers but they are--Fat: 2-3%, Carbs: 6-8% and Protein: 25-30%. In other words, a diet high in lean proteins can boost your metabolism by around 100 calories a day. I hope I've helped to clear up some of the pervasive myths that many of you have heard from your buddies at the gym or your friend that lost a ton of weight by 'crash dieting.' Just remember to do your research on any new 'fad' diet, exercise craze or supplement. Eat a well-balanced diet with as little processed ingredients as possible and drink plenty of water! See you in the gym! Tony Edge C.P.T. MUSLARTORLANDO@yahoo.com IG: Tony_Edge_Fitness Facebook: Tony Edge Fitness

A LAND REMEMBERED: THE STEAKHOUSE BY SCOTT SPAR 66

DINING

Land Remembered, a AAA Four Diamond restaurant, is truly one of Orlando’s hidden gems. Located inside the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort on Universal Blvd near SR 528, the restaurant is just off to the side of the porte cochere entrance. Our servers Bob, Simo and Christina offered us recommendations that were perfectly suited to our individual tastes. Based on Bob’s suggestions for appetizers, we ordered Prince Edward Island Diver Scallops, Crab Cakes and Shrimp Cocktail. The scallops were big in size and perfectly seasoned, the crab cakes were moist and made with real lump crab from Maryland (no fillers at all), and the shrimp cocktail were large in size and served perfectly chilled along with a three-layer cocktail sauce that gets spicier as you eat.

offer great service and food, but an atmosphere resembling a club house restaurant of an upscale country club. When you visit be sure to ask for Bob, and, while you’re there, have him sign you up for the Rosen Hotels Black Card which offers you a 25% discount (even off of your meal that night) in a few of their restaurants on property and at other select Rosen hotels. Valet parking is free of charge. Just be sure to have your server validate your parking claim check.

The restaurant features Harris Ranch Black Angus Prime Beef. I ordered the Surf and Turf--the Filet Mignon was close to perfection paired with a one pound Cold Water Lobster Tail. My partner had the bone-in ribeye steak which was served medium as requested. The meat was well seasoned, tender to the touch. Our meals were accompanied by three side items--creamed spinach, grilled asparagus with hollandaise sauce, and (my favorite) baked sweet potato mash with cinnamon honey butter, all served family style. For dessrt we ordered a slice of Chocolate Mousse cake which was layered with a pecan nougatine (simply DELISH), along with a plethora of “Minis” which were like a little bit of heaven in a shot glass. There were six to choose from including chocolate mousse cake, creme brûlée (served flambé), strawberry cheese cake, Glenda’s banana cream, and fresh mixed berries. All of these desserts were creations of Executive Pastry Chef David Ramirez, who with his wife Nicole also operate the world-renowned David Ramirez Chocolates (2164 Central Florida Parkway, Orlando). A Land Remembered is one of Orlando’s finest steakhouses and one that we highly recommend our readers to try. They not only
