Intimate Engagement at the Royal Palms Resort & Spa PHOTOS BY DENNIS DEAN

Let’s face it. One of the most important pieces to an outfit is the underwear. They primarily provide support to your little fellow and prevent chaffing. But we all know if you’re expecting someone to see you in your undies, you want to look as sexy as possible. Brands are offering up a bigger selection of stylish and creative pieces each year, giving consumers the chance to find the right “fit” so to speak. For our 2013 underwear shoot, we worked with underwear designers Nico and Arthus, who also happen to run an amateur porn blog (arthusetnico.tumblr.com). The sleek, sexy Royal Palms Resort was the perfect backdrop for the shoot, with the hotel escribing its space as “tropical sensuality meets chic urban design.” The shoot features styles from a myriad of modern brands, including Diesel, Papi, Timoteo, Cell Block 13, Freedom Reigns, Stud, Teamm8, SW, C-IN2, Pikante, JOR and Pump. If you’re caught in any of these looks with your pants down, odds are the outcome won’t be so bad.

Winners at Stonewall Museum

Epic Saturdays at The Manor

o The mission of the “Winners” exhibit, is to “preserve, interpret and share the heritage of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community,” according to Stonewall National Museum’s official site. Funded by the Broward Board of County Commissions, the Florida Cultural Division, Comcast, Sidelines, the Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, Bitner Goodman, Peter Jackson, and the museum itself, there is a lot of support behind this exhibit. “Winners” covers the history of gay sports and athletes in America, nicely complimenting their Gay Games exhibit, which is running simultaneously. Highlighting athletes such as Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Dave Kopay, Brucey Hayes, and plenty more, the exhibit focuses on a few of those “who dares to be different and to make a difference.” For more information visit stonewallnationalmuseum.org. Open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Stonewall National Museum & Archives. 1300 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

oCelebrating the Independence of Brazil in the Latin room, The Manor will be one hot spot to drop by this weekend. With special guest Olga Dantelly and hostess Viva Mirage, you’re sure to be entertained, and with the Latin “papi dancers,” you’ll surely be engaged. In the main room, DJ Cindel will be spinning a set that will keep you moving, performing after his recent wins of Matinee Lass Vegas Festival and the Circuit Barcelona DJ contest. As always, no cover and $3 Iced Teas until midnight. 10:30 p.m. The Manor. 2345 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Zedd: Meet Lady Gaga’s New Producer oBruno Mars is one of those artists who dreamed of making a hit single, made said single, then continued to release hit after hit after hit. He worked hard, chased his dreams, and got what he wanted. Now that he’s acknowledged and respected within the industry, Mars is able to do more mature work. His album from last year, “Unorthodox Jukebox,” proved that the singer was capable of producing a cohesive body of mature work, with a little help from some extraordinary vocals. The Hawaiian singer-songwriter has won several awards for his work, including a Grammy, an American Music Award and a Billboard Music award. The Moonshine Jungle Tour is Mars’ second concert tour in support of last year’s “Unorthodox Jukebox,” so if you missed him last run, now’s your chance. 8 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132. guymag.net

Cassette It Together oRadio-Active Records tends to host some epic events for music lovers. They showcase various artists in a way that many venues won’t. They take chances on smaller bands they believe have “star power,” placing them right there in the store, playing live for local music enthusiasts. The store is now joining in on the first-ever Cassette Store Day, where vinyl purists and cassette tape lovers can set aside differences and celebrate more exclusive releases, live bands, and free pizza. Enjoy live performances by Miguel More Valentine, Shangri La, The Goddamn Hustle, and Lil Daggers. 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Radio-Active Records. 845 N Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Anniversary Weekend at Ramrod o The Ramrod is celebrating two anniversaries this weekend: Pig Dance’s 5 year anniversary and the bar’s 19 year anniversary. Saturday Night’s Pig Dance has been going on for five years year, which is essentially South Florida’s filthiest monthly party (we mean that in a good way). You can always expect the unexpected at Ramrod, and Pig Dance is no exception. On Sunday, celebrate the bar’s 19th anniversary, with $1,000 giveaways in cash and prizes. If you’re looking for a dark and dancy weekend, this is your stop. Ramrod. 1508 NE 4th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33304. THE WEEK continues on page 32

John Mayer: Everybody’s Guilty Pleasure o John Mayer is one of those guys that everyone loves to hate. He’s talented, he has a sense of humor, and he’s attractive. But let’s face it, the guy has balls. At times, his genitals are even the topic of conversation, like in his 2010 Playboy interview. When asked if black women throw themselves at him, Mayer responded, “I don’t think I open myself to it. My d**k is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a f****n’ David Duke c**k.” Charming, no? Even though Mayer is the guilty pleasure of millions of women around the world, he’s recently been tied down by girlfriend Katy Perry. Gossip sites are even saying that the two might wed, but in Hollywood nothing is certain (just look at Perry’s now nonexistent marriage to comedian Russel Brand). Mayer is touring in support of his newest album, “Paradise Valley.” 7 p.m. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601 Sansburys Way, West Palm Beach, 33411.

2nd Annual Classic Film Festival o Gateway Theatre is hosting their 2nd Annual Classic Film Festival this month – until the 26th – where moviegoers can enjoy their favorite classics in the space and comfort of a movie theater. The festival boasts titles such as “Tootsie,” “Dr. Strangelove,” “The Graduate,” “The Way We Were,” “It’s A Wonderful Life,” and “Young Frankenstein” to name a few. The festival reminds people that classics will always be classics, regardless of the year they were originally released. A portion of the ticket sales will benefit the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund, a McCormick Foundation fund that is committed to supporting programs that move low-income children and families to selfsufficiency. On this particular night, September 9, the theater will be showing “Band Wagon” at 1 p.m., “Tootsie” at 4 p.m., and “All About Eve” at 7:30 p.m. Gateway Theatre. 1820 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

TRAVEL

Austin, Texas Riding a Cowboy, Leading a Horse By Robert Elias Deaton

The Moody Theater

o

Every Friday night from 5 p.m to 8 p.m., the men who like to eat come out for Rose’s free buffet at Oilcan Harry’s (211 W 4th St at Lavaca). It’s a rather lavish spread appropriate for the most popular club in all of Gay Austin, otherwise known as Bat City for the number of the flying mammals visible in the sky at dusk. Oilcans is in the Warehouse District, which is hardly Austin’s my attractive section. Tbe Warehouse District does reinforce Austin’s reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World with the “Austin City Limits” television show live at the Moody Theater (310 W Willie Nelson Blvd.). Music, in fact, is everywhere in this town— beginning at the airline terminal as you deplane in Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), named after Captain John August Earl Bergstrom, an officer who served with the 19th Bombardment Group, one of the 15 original combat air groups formed by the Army before World War II. You’ll discover combos playing at Whole Foods Market, outdoors at the Blues on the Green (Zilker Park Rock Island,2100 Barton Springs Rd.) series, the South by Southwest Music Festival, as well as any number of other clubs, coffeehouses, bars, taquerias, auditoriums and concert halls. And this coming weekend, music will hold forth in the grandest gay tradition as Austin celebrates Gay Pride 2013 at the Fiesta Gardens (2101 Jesse E Segovia St). The theme is “Love Unites!” with performers Andy Bell and Crystal Waters joining other entertainers as well as 120 vendors along the shores of Lady Bird Lake. Two hours later the Pride Parade launches from in front of the State Capitol Building (112 E 11th St). The capital city of Texas boasts many fine hotels as you might expect, but none capture the history of the place quite like the Driskill Hotel (604 Brazos St). It was originally built in 1896 as the home of cattle baron Jesse Driskill, and boasts 188 magnificent rooms and suites, close to the Austin Convention Center and the Long Center for the Arts.

guymag.net

When it’s time to head out into the night, the gays play all over town. Rain (217B W 4th St) is located adjacent to Oilcan Harry’s and is known for its live combos and teeming dance floor. Up the street at Chain Drive (504 Willow St at Red River St.) is the closest thing this town has to a leather bar. Unlike most leather bars, however, this one does not depend on bears for its clientele. Here, the patrons are young, lacking much in the way of gear, and mainly interested in the music. (Yes, there’s that word again.) No visit to Austin is complete without at least one stop at the Jackalope (404 E 6th St between Trinity St & Neches St). Not only do they have the best waffle fries in town, but sit in the back of the joint and get to watch foreign horror movies with subtitles for free. A dive bar meets the drive in. For those who rely on old bar lists, beware of venturing toward the old Red Room (219 W 4th St). It used to have a pretty cool reputation as one the best gay handouts in town. But the place was sold within the last two months and the new owner not only discourages gay business, he is only hostile to gays who dare to cross its boundaries. Please try to control the urge to pee on the front door and leave your scent. Take it down the street to Oilcan Harry’s, which likes those things… and more.

FITNESS

The ABC’s For Awesome Abdominals by Tom

Bonanti

o

No doubt about it, a chiseled midsection is the crowning achievement of any physique. In addition to looking sleek and hot, a lean and toned middle is good for maintaining a healthy, pain-free lower back. Also, keeping belly fat at a minimal has been shown to prevent heart disease, colo-rectal cancer and other life threatening conditions associated with obesity. I’m not saying that your abs are the most muscle group of the body, but as you can see, keeping them healthy is beneficial for many reasons. And it’s not that difficult! Basically, your abdominals are comprised of the transverse abdominus, the rectus abdominus (your six pack), and the internal and external obliques. Because your abs are such a large muscle group, you need to train them 3-4 times per week and work them to exhaustion. Four or five good exercises using 3-4 sets of 15 reps should do the trick. For optimal results, the crunch and variations of this movement should be at the heart of every successful ab routine. Avoid commercial devices that promise immediate results and stick with basic crunches and bent knee leg lifts that you can do on any mat at home, at the office or in the gym. Begin a crunch in a supine position lying on a mat. Place your feet on a bench or exercise ball with your hips and knees flexed at 90 degrees. Rest your arms across your chest. This is the starting position. For proper technique, move the chin to the chest. Pull the rib cage up and over the pelvis. guymag.net

Keep the lower back flat and continue to crunch upward, elbows and chest to the knees. Contract your abs as hard as possible. To make crunches harder, add resistance by clasping a 10 or 15 lb weight to you chest as you crunch. Great abs don’t just depend upon endless hours in the gym doing crunches and cardio. What you put in your mouth is even more important! Get you mind out of the gutter, I’m talking about your nutrition. The expression, “You are what you eat!” has never been truer. Stellar abs require sacrifice. Cut out all fast foods – they’re loaded with salt, sugar, preservatives and saturated fat. Nix all refined sugars, i.e. candy, cookies and the like. Sodas are out of the question. Cut back on the booze and you’re sure to see and feel results overnight! Carbohydrates are your friends, especially complex, low glycemic index carbs like fruits, veggies and whole grains. Consume these early in the day to fuel your activities. Lay off carbs after 6 PM, because these are going to be stored as fat as your body slows down. Eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. Avoid monster meals and portions. A dynamite six-pack depends upon how faithful you are to a great 3-way. Rev up your metabolism with cardio, do your crunches to build muscle, and stick with a high protein, moderate carb diet. For more tips on steel like abs, contact trainertomb@ aol.com.
