Joe Komara Breaks All of the Rules Cinemax Star Tells All

Joe Komara landed his role on “The Girl’s Guide to Depravity” with only one audition. “Apparently the producers liked me,” he says with a flash of his Colgate smile. “A few weeks after that first meeting, I got the offer. It couldn’t have been easier.” And Komara couldn’t be happier with the series. “It’s a show all single people can relate to. Dating, trying to figure out the right games to play or not play, trying to have fun meeting new people while also trying to keep hearts from getting broken. Especially our own.” The former gymnast-turned-singer from small town Indiana got his start in acting on the New York stage, performing in the off-Broadway production of “The Donkey Show” and then on Broadway in “Grease.” “My gymnastics background helped a lot,” he reflects. “My tumbling skills gave me an edge over a lot of the other dancers.” While in New York, Komara was offered a television role on the CBS soap, “As The World Turns.” It was the first time he realized that screen acting might be a realistic goal for him. He left New York for Los Angeles and immediately noticed the difference between the two showbiz cities. “It’s easier to get jobs in New York. You hit the street, go on auditions and eventually someone takes a chance on you. In L.A., it’s about having the right look, knowing the right people or my new favorite, having the most Twitter followers.” Joe Komara obviously met at least one of the

criteria because he now stars as the funny and multi-swinging Tyler in Cinemax’s hit drama series that begins airing its second season this month.

Your character finds love this season. I’m not surprised. Tyler is a decent and funny guy who tells it like it is. He’s doable.

Mark Dawson: How is Tyler different from typical gay characters on television? Joe Komara: Tyler breaks stereotypes. Sure, he rants about problems, looks down on those without much style, and loves to divulge details of his sex life like a lot of gay men I know but he’s also a guy who isn’t defined by labels. He has a laissez-faire attitude toward conforming. I think viewers find him really relatable.

What dating advice would you give to Tyler? It’s the other way around. There’s more I can learn from Tyler.

Is there a reason the character had to be gay? Actually, yes. The show’s writer Heather Rutman (the show is based on Ms. Rutnam’s blog and her book of the same name) says, “Like any good depraved girl, she gets her best advice and stories from her GBF’s (Gay Best Friends) and Tyler is a mash-up of a bunch of them. “Girls Guide” is pretty provocative, even for Cinemax! True, the show is more provocative than, say, “Girls.” Our show doesn’t shy away from nudity and sexual situations. Cable shows are a subscription service, so they can contain racier plot lines than the big network shows are able to air. I think it’s a good thing. Sex is a part of everyone’s lives. I don’t see why it shouldn’t be reflected in the lives of the characters we watch on TV. Would you do a nude scene? I had one in the first season. It was quite overthe-top and silly but I actually had a fun time doing it. Like me, she was a dancer so we kind of thought of it as choreography. So you would do it again? I would do it again. I find as I get older, I’m getting more comfortable with myself. I used to be crazily self-conscious about my body. I would wear t-shirts in the pool in high school! These days I’ll drop trough without blinking an eye. Are you single? Ah, my favorite question. (Laughs) Yes, I am single. My favorite rule on “The Girl’s Guide” is #19: Settling is for quitters. I prefer to wait for the elusive grand prize. Why do think it’s taking so long to find him? It’s hard to develop relationships in Los Angeles: much harder than it ever was in New York. In New York, you can’t avoid running into people. You see them on the subway, in line at Starbucks, or walking home at night. Guys spend a lot more time in their cars in LA.

guymag.net

What lessons can you learn from Tyler? He cares a lot less about outcome. He trusts in the moment that things will work out for the best. I’d love to be more like that. Also, Tyler isn’t afraid to ask for what he wants when he wants it. I think we’d all like to have a little more of that at times. I know I would. Tyler was a player in season one. Can a zebra really change his stripes? I guess the one piece of advice I would pass along to Tyler is to not fuck a good thing up. Bartenders are notorious for their wandering eyes. Tyler is used to playing the field and doing what he wants. I don’t know that I can see him in a relationship for long. But, then again, when love is concerned, people can be unpredictable. I’d advise Tyler to trust in it--love can be real. The show is about a group of girls following a book of dating rules quickly and recklessly. Do you think it’s necessary to play games in the beginning of a relationship? I wish I could stay no, but if I’m going to be truthful, I think there are some games that need to be played in the beginning. You have to feel people out and test the waters a bit. We all come with walls up and trepidation. I mean, nobody wants to get their heart broken, right? Do you follow any of the show’s dating rules? Sure, I follow some. Which ones? Like having a back-up plan in case a date is disastrous. Also, I always do my homework before a date, you know, I do a little stalking on Facebook. What? Is that creepy? How many rules are there in “The Girl’s Guide”? A lot. Following so many rules sounds like it would make dating even more complicated than it already is. When confused, there is a safety net built in. Rule #55 is ‘f**k the rules.’ Watch Joe Komara on Cinemax’s “The Girl’s Guide to Depravity.” The second season begins airing September 13th. Kiss Kiss

Faith Michaels’ New Track is Passionate and Sexy

o

Faith Michaels’ newest track may share the same title as the 1986 single by Prince and The Revolution, from the “Parade” album, but that’s where the similarities end. “Other than both songs being called ‘Kiss,’ I couldn’t compare the two,” she explains. “My ‘Kiss’ is more like Prince’s ‘Cream’ or ‘Do Me Baby’ because the moans in the three songs are meant to inspire listeners into a certain state of mind, if you catch my drift.” Michaels penned the song, drawing inspiration from her first love (who just so happened to be a fan of Prince). “It’s about the passion we felt towards one another. You know that feeling you get when you first look deeply into your lover’s eyes and they take your breath away? Then when you go in for the kiss, you feel that explosion of sensuality. That’s what ‘Kiss’ is about,” she says. “Kiss” is Michael’s second single release with DJ Georgie Porgie, the Chicago-based dance music remixer/producer who has reached the top five on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music chart multiple times with hits like “Let the Music Pump You Up,” “Everybody Must Party,” “I’m in Love,” “Love Story” and “Life Goes On.” Last winter, the pair collaborated on “Go Home,” a joyful song about staying out all night on the dance floor.

32

theguymag

“Georgie and I work so well together,” continues Michaels. “Georgie has been making club music for a long time. He knows the ins and outs of the industry. I bring an idea to him and he lets me know how we can make it work. All I have to do is listen…and then sing.” The two first met after Georgie Porgie heard Michael’s 2011 track, “Fetish.” Similar to “Kiss,” “Fetish” is a sex-tacular floor shaker with hard beats that continue to be played at underground and after-hour events throughout the country and abroad. “I was really trying to stay away from producing another erotic anthem,” Michaels says. “I didn’t think I could ever top ‘Fetish.’ But people kept asking me when I was going to do another song like it and finally I realized it’s who I am. It’s what I enjoy. I’m a Leo. Leo’s are very seductive people.” She’s also excited to help bring back the big room sound. “Big Room deserves a comeback,” she says. “Everything that worked before always comes back, just modernized. That’s what ‘Kiss’ is…a modernized ‘Fetish,’” “Kiss” is available now on iTunes, Amazon. com, and most major music retailers. East End Boys

Adam Levine...and the Rest of Maroon 5

o The Pet Shop Boys have been fighting for a comeback for a number of years, but it seemed as though last year’s “Elysium” was the final nail in the coffin. While “Elysium” was atmospheric, emotional and ambitious, it was perhaps a little too ambitious. After the album received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike, the English electronic duo (consisting of Chris Lowe and openly gay lead singer Neil Tennant) decided to head back to the studio to record a follow up album, this time aiming for a dancer vibe. The duo teamed up with acclaimed producer Stuart Price (who’s worked with Madonna, Kylie Minogue, and Scissor Sisters to name a few) to create their dance record, and thankfully, the outcome was phenomenal. The album, appropriately titled “Electric,” peaked at #3 on the UK Albums Chart, making it the duo’s highest charting album since 1993. Virtually every track is single-worthy, and each track can hold its own on any club DJ’s playlist. 8 p.m. The Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

oIf you feel like Maroon 5 was just here, it’s because they were, on March 29. Although it was just a short five months ago, we cannot tell a lie – we’ve missed Adam Levine. That flawless face...those tattoos...that body...his voice isn’t that bad either, though. Jokes aside, Maroon 5 is shaping up to be a memorable band for years to come. The band just recently released their fourth single from last year’s “Overexposed,” and is currently working on a fifth album, rumored to have a darker sound. Levine’s a force to be reckoned with, so we can only imagine the possibility of a darker, sexier sound. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601 Sansburys Way, West Palm Beach, 33411.

Bears at Bill’s oBill’s Filling Station is the destination for bears on a Friday night. Before you know it, you’ll be lost in a sea of bears, dancing to progressive house music. Don’t ask how it happens, because we don’t know – it just does. Growl also tends to bring in cubs who aren’t from our neck of the woods, so you’ll never get bored. You should know that bears are very well trained, and usually won’t bite unless provoked. 10 p.m. Bill’s Filling Station. 2209 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305. guymag.net

Kaskade in Miami oA Kaskade show is the closest you’ll get to Ultra until March 28, 2014. Kaskade (born Ryan Raddon) is everything that you’d expect a modern, progressive house producer to be: he’s handsome, dapper, and makes radio-friendly house music that the masses can really move to. His forthcoming album, titled “Atmosphere,” has been described by Rolling Stone as “[featuring] classical elements.... with dramatic, ‘Inception’-esque strings.” The title track (and lead single) also doubles as Kaskade’s singing debut. “It’s not necessarily about being a singer – it’s more about just catching the idea of the song,” Kaskade told Rolling Stone. Kaskade was recently ranked number four on Stone’s list of “The 25 DJs That Rule the Earth,” squeaking by big names such as Diplo and David Guetta. If you’ve been meaning to unleash your inner raver, you’ll regret missing out on this set. 7 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132. THE WEEK continues on page 36 theguymag

THE WEEK ____________________ Sunday

9/15

Adopt-A-Pet Day o Now in its 16th year, Mona’s Adopt-A-Pet Day is a truly unique event. Not many cocktail lounges host a pet adoption, let alone 16 consecutive ones. The event will be hosted by The Pet Project, a nonprofit that ensures that pets belonging to persons living with HIV/AIDS or other disabling conditions will still get the proper care and support. If qualified, the organization offers a food bank of low cost pet food, home delivery of said food (for clients who aren’t mobile), low cost veterinary services, and tons more. If you decide to take home a furry friend, you will also be provided with three months of free food. 3 p.m. To 7 p.m. Mona’s Cocktail Lounge. 502 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Just Can’t Seem to Get Enough o Depeche Mode are the godfathers of dark, electronic music. Thirteen of the band’s albums reached top ten status on UK charts, and they’ve sold over 100 million albums (and singles) worldwide, making them the “most commercially successful electronic band in music history,” according to billboard.com. Most remember the English electronic group for smash singles “Enjoy the Silence,” “Just Can’t Get Enough,” “Personal Jesus” and “People Are People.” The goth-electronic band has enjoyed a solid fan base for decades now (with their biggest singles appearing in the 80s), releasing their thirteenth studio album, “Delta Machine,” earlier this year. The album also peaked at number six on the Billboard 200, making it their seventh top ten album in the US. The band has influenced a number of artists, big and small, including Shakira, Pet Shop Boys and The Killers. Throw on your finest black clothes, and get ready to sway your heart out. 7:30 p.m. BB&T Center. 1 Panther Pkwy, Sunrise, 33323.

der catalog,” Lynn sings on the track. The single became Lynn’s signature song, in addition to her duet with Conway Twitty – “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man.” Lynn’s controversial songs kept her in the spotlight during her career, including “Rated ‘X’”, which touched on the double standards that divorced women face. “The Pill,” about a wife and mother being liberated by birth-control pills also stirred the pot, making Lynn a key figure in feminism and a role model for working-class women. 7 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

____________________ Wednesday Fun with Tegan and Sara o Mizner Park is usually overlooked, that is, until a big name artist pops up for a night in the park’s amphitheater. This Wednesday, Fun (of “We Are Young” fame) and Tegan and Sara will draw a large crowd of concertgoers to the outdoor space. “We Are Young” is that one song that you only liked because you heard it so much, but in reality, Fun is actually a talented group of individuals. They even joked about their single when receiving a Grammy for “Record of the Year,” saying, “I don’t know what I was thinking, writing the chorus for this song. If this is in HD, everybody can see our faces, and we are not very young.” Hailing from Canada, lesbian twin sisters Tegan and Sara will be opening for Fun, in support of their recent album, “Heartthrob.” The album is pure pop, with slick production and fantastic vocals from the sisters. The idea of the two bands sharing the same stage is nothing short of amazing. 7 p.m. Mizner Park Amphitheater.

Louisiana Woman o Country singer Loretta Lynn made it known early on in her career where she was coming from: Released in 1970, “Coal Miner’s Daughter” told the tale of Lynn’s life growing up in a cabin as a coal miner’s daughter. “In the summertime we didn’t have shoes to wear, but in the wintertime we’d all get a brand new pair from a mail or-

The last time we were in Detroit—oh, about three years ago— we were mugged. The previous visit, maybe two years earlier, we were mugged as well. And during out first visit to Detroit, way back in 1977, we were—you guessed it. Mugged and, as it happens, carjacked as well. The car, a rental from Budget, was later involved in a murder/burglary in which a house was set on fire and all the occupants killed. So too was the Budget Rental Car, which was parked in the garage at the time. Still, we have a warm spot of this city of 700,000. With decaying factories and the highest murder rate in America after New Orleans, it does have a tough image problem. While its high crime rate is a fact of life, it should not keep you from giving this town a shot—or, rather, try. The downtown architectural drama is reserved for the Renaissance Center (100 Renaissance Center), a cluster of seven high-rises. The tallest among them is the Detroit Marriot at the Renaissance Center with its 73 stories, making it the tallest all-hotel building in the Western Hemisphere. Incredible views look out upon the Ambassador Bridge connecting Detroit with Windsor, Ontario, in Canada. While the hotel is dramatic and its views spectacular, the place isn’t for anyone—in particular those with any kind of height issue. While there are many elegant hotels in Detroit, including the MGM Grand Detroit (1777 3rd St), there is an artificial cheap universality among them, much like the one shared by hotels in Las Vegas. The continuing decay of the downtown area, coupled with the July 18, 2013 filing for bankruptcy by Detroit (the largest U.S. city to file for bankruptcy), would seem to make Detroit a unusual choice as a travel destination, but it is, in fact, a totally fascinating selection. The Detroit Institute of Art (5200 Woodward Ave) is a massive museum, with several excellent

guymag.net

examples of works by Degas and Cézanne and a collection of pieces by African-American artists. It is not a world-class museum, but it reflective of the city itself. Once among the world’s wealthiest; now a graffiti covered shell of memories and success. It is nearly as tragic and glamorous an example of faded glory as the Michigan Central Station (2405 West Vernor Hwy). Built in 1918 at the start of Detroit’s greatness as the Motor City, the Greekinspired temple served as the gateway to the Midwest until the last train left the station in 1988. Since that point, this again colossus to a lost past has remained a neglected, yet significant reminder of Detroit’s heritage. Not even the delightful Belle Isle (E Jefferson Ave) has managed to escape the plague that surrounds Detroit. Designed in the late 1880s by Frederick Law Olmsted, a chief architect of New York’s Central Park, this island located between Detroit and Ontario, Canada, in the Detroit River. There is a small zoo and the city’s aquarium (which has been closed for years due to lack of funding) on the island, which is a popular place in summer to spend picnicking and remembering former glories. It is reached via MacArthur Bridge, three miles east of downtown. Go, relax, and imagine.

FITNESS

A Leaner, More Muscular You It’s Easier Than You Think! by Tom

Bonanti

o

Ask any guy about his fitness goals and I’m sure that he’ll say something like, “I want to build muscle and lose fat.” While this seems like a plan, you can get confused by the amount of conflicting dietary and workout advice coming from all sources. If you did what you were told by every expert out there, you’d starve yourself one day and eat everything in sight the next. Always consult your physician before beginning a weight loss program or new workout regime just to be safe. Here are my five best strategies on how to build muscle and lose fat at the same time. First, to lose weight, you must cut calories. This does not mean going on a starvation diet or cutting out all carbs and fats as many will mistakenly tell you. The low fat, lower carbohydrate debate comes down to this: you have to eat fewer calories than you burn if you want to lose weight. The key here is eating fewer calories by cutting saturated fats and junk foods from your nutritional plan. Focus on eating smaller meals, five to six times a day, every two to three hours. Consume low glycemic index complex carbs (whole grain cereals, pastas, breads, fresh fruits, veggies and nuts) early in the day so that your energy level won’t lag as the day wears on. Second, remember that eating protein builds muscle. Proteins fills you up so you are less likely to graze between meals. Another great fact about protein is that your body expends more energy to guymag.net

digest it than it does to digest carbs or fats. Build your meals around lean chicken, beef, fish or pork. That way you will burn more calories throughout the day and your muscles will get the protein they need to grow. Third, eat more fiber. Fiber is not a nutrient, but it is important to a healthy diet. Fiber is the part of plants that cannot be digested and it is found in all fresh fruits and vegetables. Beans, seeds and nuts are also a good source of fiber. Lack of fiber can result in sluggishness and constipation. Eating enough fiber not only provides you with a healthy digestive system, but it also helps you to feel fuller and even lowers cholesterol. Fourth, remember the importance of omega-3 polyunsaturated fats found in fish, nuts, seeds, flax seed and fish oil. Health benefits include less risk of diabetes and heart disease. But omega-3 fats can also contribute to a “fab” physique as well. For example, omega-3s reduce inflammation throughout the body. This not only prevents heart attacks, but it also helps sore, tired muscles to better recover. Eat fish and eggs a couple of times a week. Finally, remember that in order to stay lean and build muscle you must have a plan. Working out regularly, with a varied routine and challenging weights, will build muscle, provided you rest and feed your body the proper nutrients. Any questions or comments?
