Florida AIDS Walk, Festival Raise a Record $1.1 Million

[Photos by Big Dewitte] BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

o The Florida AIDS Walk and Music Festival celebrated its 10th anniversary recently, raising a record $1.1 million in 2015. Director Mark Martin attributes then fundraising success to a strong commitment by returning participants, new participants and an increase in corporate sponsorships. For the past 10 years, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) has organized and produced the event, raising more than $5.25 million to support HIV/AIDS services in the state. “Every effort put into the walk translates directly into helping

20

save a life,” said Martin. Each year, participants register for the walk and set personal fundraising goals, with a required minimum of raising $25 per registrant. To make the event more engaging, participants can register as teams and work together to raise funds. This year alone, there were approximately 2,000 online registrations and more than 90 teams. To charm the competitors, the organization created a top-ranked categories for both individuals and teams. Everyone is automatically entered into the competition and the top fundraisers receive special prizes. This year’s top team, Club US, has theguymag

theguymag

won the competition eight out of the last 10 years. Their prize this time was a party at Rosie’s Bar & Grill for all 70 members of the team. Organizers encourage participants to combine the fundraising walk with a music festival at Fort Lauderdale Beach that features a live performance and team costume contest. This year the headliner was pop act Salt-N-Pepa. Cute and whacky costumes added a touch of humor to the festival. To get updates and information on Florida AIDS Walk, email info@ floridaaidswalk.org. Where to Find the Best Chocolate Treats, Truffles in Wilton Manors

by Jameer

baptiste

o JP Cobleigh and Barry Miller have created the perfect little chocolate gift shop in Wilton Manors, JP’s Chocolate Shoppe. Miller was encouraged to open a unique store on the Drive that wasn’t already done. So he thought, “What do must people like?” The answer immediately popped into his head and he went to work researching all about chocolate. What he learned solidified his decision to open a chocolate boutique. “You don’t need to go to Europe. There’s affordable quality chocolate made here in America,” said Miller. Miller and his business partner and boyfriend Cobleigh scoured the U.S. for the best chocolate confections and on Dec. 14, 2013, they opened their doors for the first

time with a great public response. “Chocolate really is the perfect gift for any occasion,” he said. “Instead of bringing a bottle of wine to a dinner party, why not an assortment of truffles,” Cobleigh added. “They’re great for birthdays, anniversaries, a host gift, or a simple thank-you gift.” Cobleigh and Miller pride themselves on their all-natural chocolate products. Whether it’s their chocolate candies, chocolate sauces or their chocolate coffees, their products are free of the preservatives and wax commonly found in store-bought chocolate. They avoid artificial ingredients by keeping their chocolate in a climate-controlled environment and routinely replenish their store confections about every other week to guarantee freshness. They carry chocolate that is gluten

free, vegan and organic. Miller makes specialty truffles with goat cheese, chocolate-dipped strawberries (every Saturday or by request), caramel apples for Halloween and chocolate-dipped pears for Christmas. Cobleigh dreams of adding a second store. But in the immediate future, the pair plan to relocate to a bigger space. They continue to experiment with in-house recipes and are looking to expand their product line with more chocolate flavored coffees and then add pastries and ice cream.

AARON CURRIE o

At 18, Currie entered the U.S. Marine Corps right after high school in 1999. His family legacy motivated him to join, and he quickly proved himself in boot camp

and combat training, becoming an active member in November of that same year. He embraced the camaraderie of the Marines, but Currie grew tired of living in fear under the U.S. military’s policy at the time of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” He found himself having to hide his sexual orientation and first romantic relationship with another man while he was stationed as a legal service specialist in West Palm Beach. After Currie left the Marine Corps, he pursued a degree in cosmetology at Indian River State College and graduated in 2002. He’s been a hairstylist for more than 13 years, splitting his time between Edmund James Salon in Palm Beach Gardens and Echo Salon in Fort Lauderdale. He met his husband, David Currie, a detective with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, in 2013 during group fitness at Body Tek in Wilton Manors. “We were both in other relationships and had a lot of mutual friends,” said Currie. “We hit it off on our first date. We talked for hours and spent the entire day together. I saw how kind, gentle and compassionate he was.” That was Christmas Day, 2013 Fast forward to last Christmas. While holiday shopping, Currie said he decided he wanted to marry David and would pop the question. The two wed a few weeks later at the stroke of midnight on Jan. 6. “I didn’t expect Florida to have marriage equality as quickly as it did. We had thought about going to New York,” said Currie. “It was such a historic moment.” Currie said David is more of the thinker, while he’s more live-in-the-moment. Yet both qualify as strong men-in-uniform types given their respective backgrounds. “Always cards down,” said Currie, when asked about keeps the relationship intact. “Communication is key.”

DEBRA HAMPTON

ENERGETIC, VIBRANT STARLIGHT OF PURE DELIGHT on a stretcher and being wheeled o “Lying into the operating room for my back

surgery, I could recognize that voice,” Debra Hampton recalled. “It was my song playing in the background!” Was it just her imagination while in a drug-induced stupor? Hampton later asked the doctor about the operating room music she heard. His response surprised her. “We always operate to that song,” he said. Hampton never questioned her destiny in life. Since the age of four, she was a singing machine conducting stage performances all alone in her bedroom.

“I never played with dolls or my friends,” Hampton remarked. “All I did was sing.” Hampton was born in the beautiful seaside town of Madison, Connecticut to an Italian father and German-French mother. There’s not much she can recall about her childhood other than poignant memories of singing, a gift that everyone around recognized. Her mother would even use her talent as a way to keep track of her little tomboy. “Mom made me sing around her while she lied out in the sun,” Hampton chuckled. “She would wake up when she wouldn’t hear me theguymag

TRAVEL

BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

Vacation Retreats for the Naturists

o

While Fort Lauderdale has a plethora of clothing optional resorts strategically placed throughout our gayborhood and beyond, the choices for other vacation destinations where nudity is not only permitted but encouraged is a little harder to come by. Fortunately, we’ve assembled our favorites to make your selection process a snap. Island House (1129 Fleming Street, Key West, FL 33040; 800-890-6284) in Old Town is a gated and locked private oasis that removes guests from the outside world into a luxurious resort spa experience. The facility is gay owned and the staff is made up of all men so guests feel comfortable to roam the

compound in the buff 24/7. Their front desk and café, which has been rated one of the best in Key West, is always at your beck and call morning and night, so feel free to order that midnight snack or early morning massage to kick start your day. The resort has been completely redone and features a lush tropical paradise that surrounds a heated pool, a bar, a café and a state-of-the art health club. The bar is conveniently situated right next to the pool making it easy to enjoy happy hour while you soak in the sun poolside. The health club comes with a fully equipped gym pleasing those who want a light aerobic workout and others who like to hit the gym hard with free

weights and lifting equipment. Also featured are two Jacuzzis, plus a sauna and steam room. Wonderful. Villa da Costa (7555 46th Ave North, St. Petersburg, FL 33709; 727-546-1477) on Florida’s West Coast is the affordable clothingoptional retreat that models its style after the plush resorts of Key West. The isolated retreat is open year-round with a men’s nude pool club. Guests of the 20-room resort can mingle with locals during the hours that the nude pool club is opened via day passes. Their studio rooms are simplistic yet come with all the amenities found in a typical extended-stay hotel room: Cable TV, Wi-Fi, individual A/C, and fully equipped kitchen. The Green House (1212 Magazine Street, New Orleans, LA; 504-525-1333) located in the city’s Lower Garden District is a quaint bed and breakfast that offers guests the opportunity to relax naked in their magnificent European salt-water swimming pool. The sub-tropical courtyard lined with lush Caribbean plants features a petite waterfall and an oversized hot tub. The 19th-century nine-room Greek Rival townhouse is located only a short distance from the French Quarter and is within walking distance to popular restaurants in town. The whole facility can be rented for private events with overnight group accommodations. Helios (280 East Mel Ave., Palm Springs, CA 92262; 760-323-2868) is the ultimate clothing-optional resort for the uninhibited party vacationer. This Palm Springs playground has a themed party every week for guests and non-guests who would like to join in on the fun. Every Tuesday, enjoy the “Young at Heart” silver fox all-male nude poolside event, or every Saturday take part in their “Where the Boys Are” pool party. Book three consecutive nights and receive the fourth night free. The resort features a 12-person Jacuzzi Grotto, heated swimming pool, outdoor breakfast bar and BBQ station, and an indoor multi-room play annex. Resorts aren’t the only vacation retreats that offer clothing-optional accommodations. If you want to be more exotic with your nudity, try exploring the open seas as you bare it all.

Since 2004, Source Events (888-SOURCE-8), a dedicated gay cruise provider, has been organizing a clothing-optional annual cruise for the gay naturist community. The six-toseven night naturist cruise are planned as once-a-year events. This year, the February cruise sailed out of St. Martin and visited St. Barts, Nevis, Anguilla, and Tintamarre before returning back to St. Martin. At GayNudeSail.com, you can find 40 different nude cruises a year from Greece, Turkey, the British Virgin Island, Croatia, St. Martin, St. Lucia and Thailand. The cruise is committed to offering nude sailing 24 hours a day by staying overnight in a secluded bay. The cruise company offers many types of clothing-optional cruises to fit multiple budgets by arranging accommodations through associated companies. Contact Mark Van den Eshof in Amsterdam at Adonis Gay Sailing (info@adonisgaysailing) if you would like a gay cook and shopping experience, reach out to Gay Sail for the more reasonably priced cruises, and check out Adonis Exclusive for their luxury private cruises. Nothing beats the ultimate naturist experience, which embodies both definitions of the word — a nudist and a person who worships nature. Gay Naturist Camping is a vacation retreat that can be enjoyed throughout the U.S. at multiple designated campgrounds. Most of the campgrounds are members only to keep the facilities private, which allow them to have clothing-optional status, and charge a low annual fee. Some gay naturist campgrounds in and around Florida are: Sawmill (21710 US Hwy 98, Dade City, FL 33523; 352-583-0664); and In the Woods Campground (142 Casey Court, Canon, GA; 706-246-0142). BARTENDER OF THE WEEK

Florida Native Paul Dunn Is Red Hot at Floppy Rooster by Jameer

baptiste

o Paul Dunn stands out in a crowd! Get past his shimmering natural fire-red beard with brown and blond highlights, and you learn that his a Florida native-rarity in the city of Miami. But it’s true! The 24-year-old was born and raised in Miami-Dade County and has lived there for the majority of his life. At age 18, two months after graduating high school and while enrolling into Miami-Dade College for nursing, Dunn decided to move out and come out to his Cuban mother and Irish father. He settled into his place and received blessings from his dad, but his mom didn’t take the news so well. “It was hard on her at first,” Dunn recalled. She struggled with how to react to his committed relationship at time. But shortly later, she came around and was the strong parent figure he needed when his relationship ended. “Everyone can relate to heartache,” Dunn said. In the process of building a new life with the support of both his mom and dad, Dunn moved past nursing and into bartending at age 19. Not easy when the legal drinking age is 21. He learned that Mr. Moe’s, a sports bar in Coconut Grove, was opening a branch on the main campus at Florida International University (FIU). “I thought it would be easy to get my foot in the door at a new establishment,” Dunn said. And indeed it was, but just not with Mr. Moe’s Sports Bar. The new branch was actually an off-shoot, the restaurant Moe’s Southwest Grill. Dunn took the job anyways and what was meant to be a foot in the door to a bartending gig transformed into a meteoric rise in the company from a supervisor position at the FIU location to a General Manager position

where he relocated to West Palm Beach in a matter of a short few years. However, the title came with a number of headaches, and Dunn regrouped to focus back on becoming a bartender. Moving back to Miami, Dunn learned how to mix drinks from his experienced sister and researching YouTube videos online. He went to work at TGIF with the hope to advance to a bartending position. “My parents always said if you want something you have to work for it,” Dunn said.

It was while working at TGIF, Dunn got wind of a new gay male nude gentlemen’s club opening up in Miami. March of this year marks Dunn’s one-year anniversary as Floppy Rooster’s red-hot bartender.

GUY: While we are on the topic of Madonna: I read that you share the same religion. I understand that you and your sister sought spirituality through Kabbalah after being raised in the Catholic faith due to their stance on homosexuals/ homosexuality. For readers who aren’t familiar with Kabbalah, what differentiates it from other religions (Catholicism, Christianity, etc.)? Grande: Kabbalah isn’t tied up in political hierarchy. Its messages and lessons are easy to understand, very direct and filled with positivity, love and light. It’s about self-empowerment and focuses on the good within us, rather than punishing the bad. There are no limits to what we can achieve. Limits are an unreal construct of the physical world, and we can exist above and beyond that. GUY: If you were able to sit down with the pope and discuss the way you were treated, what would you want him to know and possibly change the way the church handles the issue of homosexuality? Grande: I love this new pope. I think he is doing wonderful things for the Catholic faith and for homosexuality. Basically, I would love for it to be made extremely clear that homosexuality is not a sin and not a choice. GUY: As your star continues to rise is there something you’d like to have the opportunity to do in 2015? Grande: I would love to play Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway. And would you ever consider impersonating your sister Ariana? Grande: My drag name is Consuelo Manuella Raphealla Lopez, and I am giving you a super fierce Sofia Vergara! I have not yet impersonated my sister, however, it could definitely happen in the future. I think it could be fun. GUY: It looks like this April you’ll be the official ambassador for White Party Palm Springs? What was your reaction when Jeffrey Sanker asked you to essentially cohost the event this year? Grande: I was honored and thrilled — the White Party is such a huge celebration of love, light and sexuality — my three favorite things. I fell in love with everything about it. It’s such a great celebration of life and making new friends and new experiences and I’m honored to have been selected as the ambassador for this year. Last year I came with my sister and she was the headliner. So as you can imagine, it was extremely exciting and extremely gay – can’t wait!! GUY: Will your White Party, white-carpet outfit be as daring as what you wore to host the American Music Awards? Grande: Absolutely! It will be even more so. This is the opportunity to go Grande or go home! Get ready Palm Springs for my walk down the white carpet and my hosting duties with Kelly Osbourne.

GUY: What are you most looking forward to at this year’s White Party Palm Springs? Grande: I always love the musical performances, so I’m really looking forward to whomever Jeffrey has up his sleeve this year. His talent choices have always surprised and amazed! theguymag

RECREATION

Where to Go Ice Skating Near Wilton Manors All Year-Round

by Jameer

baptiste

o March 20 marked the first day of spring, so bid adieu to winter. Well on second thought, you might say South Florida doesn’t have much of a winter at all. But regardless of our tropical temperatures, there is at least one winter activity Floridians can enjoy year-round. Ice-skating is a common pastime in almost every modern civilization in the world. The activity dates back to 3,000 B.C. in Finland when people would tie bones to their bare feet and actually glide across the ice. It wasn’t until around the 14th Century that the Dutch revolutionized skating to include shoes with metal blades underneath. Then in the 1600s, the Imperial English

made the sport universally popular. Since then, ice skating has taken many forms -- leisure skating, figure skating and hockey. And what was once performed on frozen lakes and ponds, has evolved to include urban ice rinks in both warm and cold climates. You can find at least one ice rink in each major county of Florida. The two near Wilton Manors are Pines Ice Arena (12425 Taft St. Pembroke Pines, FL Phone: 954704-8700) and Florida Panthers Ice Den (3299 Sportsplex Dr. Coral Springs, FL Phone: 954-341-9956). Each offer skating lessons, figure skating classes and hockey leagues for youth and adults. Both rinks offer a fun, cool atmosphere for friends and families to enjoy the ice together while listen-

DINING

Don’t Just Eat Please Your Palate by Tim

HarT

o Prepare yourself for an extremely delightful experience. Liriano’s Kitchen will fit the definition of an undiscovered neighborhood gem. I happened upon this restaurant purely by chance. I was heading out for a Saturday night dinner and I was fully prepared to settle on any number of regular places that are in my neighborhood rotation when I was told of a new Italian restaurant. Now, I very much enjoy Italian cuisine of all kinds. Liriano’s Kitchen is a purveyor of fine Italian dining from the esteemed Chef Jose Liriano and they did not disappoint. I want to get this out of the way up front. Liriano’s is in the western part of the County – but it is NOT prohibitively west. From downtown Broward on a weekend, it would take about 20 minutes each way to get to the restaurant. This is the perfect amount of time to anticipate a great meal on the way (while engaging in a conversation with your dinner companion) and to discuss the evening on the way back. Like any fine dining experience the atmosphere is a must and Liria-

no’s has plenty of that both indoors and outdoors. A more than ample fine wine list is available to get the evening off to the right start. Upon arriving we were greeted and seated by Katie. She took our drink order while we perused the menu. Upon her return, she gave us the evening specials and took our order. I started with two appetizers (both on the menu) — the Calamaretti Fritti — Flash fried Calamari, Zucchini and Artichokes served with Spicy Tomato Sauce and Sweet Tartar Sauce ($9) and the Bufala Con Pomodor-Buffalo Mozzarella with Vine Ripe Tomatoes Topped with Green Basil Oil ($10). The presentation on the Bufala Con Pomodoro was way cool. The tomato’s (which were ripe and fresh) were interlaced with the mozzarella in a tower like stack with fat juicy pieces on the bottom working with smaller (yet still fat) on the top. There was an awesome, tasty green basil oil dressing all over the plate. The garlic bread turned out to be sticks coated in butter, garlic and some Parmesan cheese. There are a number of other appetizers, soups and salads available all between $5 and $12.

Unlike other fine Italian restaurants I frequent, Liriano’s has a few pizzas on the menu along with the standard gourmet Italian fare. I ordered the Linguine Frutti Di Mare — Clams, Shrimps, Scallops, Calamari, White Wine, Tomato Sauce, Basil and Garlic ($19) (also available with risotto). I have had this meal at other places and this was extremely well prepared and very tasty. My dining companion had one of the evening’s specials — Eggplant Ravioli ($15). It was incredible. After dinner, the chef and owner Jose Liriano took time out to come and greet us at our table. We ended with one of the fine desert dishes on the menu. This was a fitting end to a great meal. Liriano’s says “We always make sure to treat everyone like family” and I certainly found that to be true. I plan on going back!

Pilobolus o Inhuman bodily contortions typifies the dance group Pilobolus, making their way to the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. Using interlocking bodies and intricate movements, Pilobolus astounds with topsy-turvy entanglements defying anatomical logic. You may remember them from the 79th Annual Academy Awards where they gamboled into various poses representing the films of that year: Happy Feet, Little Miss Sunshine, and The Departed. Maybe most interesting to our community, PIlobolus signified a change in contemporary dance—the male dancers are brought into closer physical contact with each other. While expecting a gay Dirty Dancing may be stretching it, PIlobolus’ homoeroticism is implicit in their style. 8:00 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd. West Palm Beach. 33401.

Tonight his acidic tongue will dole out the humor. 8:00 p.m. Fort Lauderdale Improv. 5700 Seminole Way. Hollywood. 33314.

Menopause the Musical o Riding off the success of The Vagina Monologues in the late 1990s, Menopause the Musical is another probing look at women’s issues people are embarrassed to talk about. SCREEN SAVOR

BY GREGG SHAPIRO

It Follows [Courtesy of Radius]

Girls Like Them

o

The incredible 2014 Australian horror film The Babadook took a tired genre and turned it on its head. Creating terror through suspense instead of ugly violence, The Babadook’s writer/director Jennifer Kent raised the bar for other filmmakers working in the field. American filmmaker David Robert Mitchell now takes Kent’s baton and runs with it in It Follows (Radius). Set, appropriately, in the infected and rotting corpse of suburban Detroit, It Follows focuses on a group of jaded teens and young adults playing games, both silly and deadly serious. Of course, there is sex involved; leading to a sort of STD tag, and Annie (Bailey Spry) is the first to die. Blonde and bored Jay (Maika Monroe) is the next to get infected after having sex with hot but haunted Hugh (Jake Weary). He’s nice

enough to stick around after doing the deed with Jay, knocking her out and then telling her, after he’s bound her to a wheelchair, that if she wants to live she has to pass it on to someone else. Otherwise “it” will follow her and take her life. Talk about a killer STD. That’s quite a setup. Not long after she gets the news, Jay does begin to see “it,” which takes various forms, including an old woman in a nightgown, a half-dressed younger woman who urinates in Jay’s kitchen, and an extremely tall and thin man, to mention a few. Jay’s sister Kelly (Lili Sepe), friends and neighbors Greg (Daniel Zovatto), Yara (Olivia Luccardi) and Paul (Keir Gilchrist), who is still harboring an old crush on Jay, come together for the traumatized girl, and attempt to help her with her problem. Utilizing minimal special effects, Mitchell theguymag

guymagtube

creates maximum fear and tension. Some of the credit goes to Monroe who has skillfully mastered the art of the descent into madness. The showdown finale in the swimming pool is particularly effective, since “it” never really stops following anyone.

o

Don’t be distracted by the high concept of A Girl Like Her (Parkside Releasing). It’s a drama about bullying that is presented as a doc. In spite of a few shortcomings, it’s not a bad movie. Jessica (Lexi Ainsworth), relentlessly bullied by former friend and epic mean girl Avery (Daytime Emmy winner Hunter King), takes an overdose of pills and ends up in a coma when she feels completely helpless and hopeless in her high school social situation. Avery, who turned on Jessica because she wouldn’t let the popular girl cheat off her test, is ruthless in her torturing of Jessica, using every means available from texting to face-to-face humiliation and brutality. Jessica’s suicide attempt coincidentally occurs at the same time a documentary film crew led by Amy (writer/director Amy S. Weber) arrives on campus to get footage of the school following its high academic ranking in a national survey. Because of the tragic event, everyone’s attention shifts to the girl lying comatose in a hospital room. This leads to a close examination of the student body and inevitable incrimination of Avery. The most innovative aspect of A Girl Like Her is the use of a “spy-cam,” shaped like a dragonfly, that Jessica wears to capture what is taking place at the hands of Avery. It’s a gift from her best friend Brian (Jimmy Bennett), the only one who knows what Jessica is going through, sworn to secrecy by Jessica. Unfortunately, it also captures Jessica’s suicide attempt. A Girl Like Her also provides important insight into the bullying crisis, such as “hurt people are the ones who hurt people.”

o

As in Kirby Dick’s acclaimed doc This Film Is Not Yet Rated, about the MPAA and its corrupt rating system, his latest documentary feature, The Hunting Ground (Radius), is about people challenging a system in which others are harmed. Dick applies his critical eye to the ongoing issue of sexual assault committed on college campuses. share with us on guymag.net

Dick begins the doc on the high note of college acceptance letters, via snail mail and email. The excitement is palatable, but short-lived. Before long we are shown interviews with college students, mostly women with a few men mixed in for balance, relating the horrid stories of their sexual violations. A number of the colleges featured (more than 90 are under investigation), which appear to be more interested in their financial well-being, often connected to college athletes and fraternity houses, than the safety and security of the student body, come off as guilty as the sexual predators (some of whom are repeat offenders). For example, one frat, SAE (Sigma Alpha Epsilon), recently in the news for the Oklahoma University racist video scandal, has a long history of sexual crimes committed by its members. Several interview subjects say that SAE also stands for “sexual assault expected.” In addition to interviews with survivors and their parents and family members, viewers also hear from current and former faculty members, a variety of advocates, psychologist and others in the medical field, legal experts, as well as those in the media. Difficult to watch, but important to see, The Hunting Ground shines a necessary light on the sexual assault epidemic and the outspoken individuals and survivors who made sure that the subject made it to the top of the national agenda. With a screenplay by Emma Thompson, who also stars in the film, Effie Gray (Adopt Films), an admirable, if overly drawn out, dramatization of the titular young woman trapped in a sexless and loveless Victorian era marriage. Based on the true story of teen bride Effie (Dakota Fanning) and her much older husband, the art critic and writer John Ruskin (Greg Wise), who is under the thumb of his controlling parents (played by Julie Walters and David Suchet). There are flashes of light in this mostly foggy flick, in the form of progressive Lady Eastlake (Thompson), young painter Millais (hot Tom Sturridge), Ruskin manservant George (out actor Russell Tovey), and even Fanning, who is turning out to be a decent actress. The leaden direction, by Richard Laxton (director of An Englishman In New York about Quentin Crisp), moves a story that would have been more compelling at a clip, at the pace of paint drying on a canvas. theguymag

o

So you hate working legs at the gym? Join the club! The weight training exercises involved in building mass and sculpting legs are some of the most grueling routines known to athletes and body builders. Squats, presses, extensions and lunges require that each repetition of every set be executed according to proper form and with serious concentration. Practically speaking, you need strong legs for just about every activity. Aesthetically, a great set of legs and a sculpted butt are what make a truly superior looking physique. Squats with a barbell or on the Smith machine are the “king” of all leg exercises since they involve glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves. Squats are also great for abdominals and other core muscles, provided you utilize proper form and technique. Ideally these are performed with the assistance of a spotter or trainer to help you. Yet there are other ways to perform squats. Dumbbell squats particularly work quadriceps and glutes. Stand with your feet slightly apart and grasp a dumbbell in each hand with your arms hanging down at your sides. Look straight ahead, inhale, slightly arch your back and squat down slowly and carefully. Once your thighs are parallel to the floor, straighten your legs to return to the starting position. Exhale as you complete the movement. For power and mass, I recommend leg presses almost as highly as squats. Sit upon the machine, lying back against the angled back pad and place your feet about shoulder width apart and point your toes slightly outward. This will work your whole quad with a very slight emphasis on the outer sweep of the quad. Inhale and rotate the stop bars at the sides of your hips to release the carriage of weights for your set. Bend your legs as

much as possible while making sure your knees travel to the sides of your chest. Push up the weight with your quads, butt and hams as you return to the starting position. Exhale as you complete the movement and make sure not to lock out your knees at the top of the exercise. If you place your feet lower on the footplate, you will target your quads. Conversely, if you place your feet on the top of the footplate you will shift emphasis to butt and hams. Always make sure you keep your low back and butt on the pads. Your movements should be smooth and steady. Leg extensions are the best quadriceps isolation movement. Heavy squats and presses will ensure your mass, but extensions will define your quadriceps. Sit on the machine. Grasp either the handles or the edges of the seat to steady your body throughout the movement. Bend your knees and place your ankles under the set of roller pads. Inhale and raise your legs until they are almost parallel to the floor. Exhale as you lower the weight and complete the movement. It should be noted that this exercise places a great shear on the knee joint, so don’t lock out your knee at the top of the extension. Be careful and steady during the lower half of the movement. I suggest three to four sets of 10-12 reps for each of the leg exercises discussed above. When I’m training legs, I rest three minutes between sets. For all other body parts one to two minutes will do.

What can I say? You must train legs, so make it pays off! Contact Tom at trainertomb@ aol.com or call (954) 557-1119 with your questions or to set up a free intake today. Checkout my gym www.pumpnincgym.com .
