Get Creative with Your Wardrobe at Creative Male

by Jameer

baptiste

o On Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors, you have the pick of the litter when it comes to gay-oriented retail stores. The same can’t be said about Miami, however. Unfortunately, there is no one area in Miami that solely caters to gay men. But one store in particular that provides you a one-stop-shop experience or the retail therapy you need is Creative Male, located one block west of Biscayne Blvd. on 25th Street. It has everything a man would need to achieve that perfect look for every occasion. Owners Bruce Horwich and Ben Lyman bought the shop five years ago. They have since transformed it from an underwear boutique to a man’s fashion gallery. Need an outfit for a night out? Creative Male has you covered.

8

Want to spruce that outfit up? Browse their accessories of watches, necklaces, hats, and more. Heading out to the beach or to a pool party? Pick out your most flattering swimsuit from the latest designs. Going to work out at one of the chic gyms in Miami? Be equally stylish with their tanks and shorts. Or do you just need the basic essentials but with a slight flare? Check out their wide selection of underwear from leading designers. They have a cool sock collection also. Don’t forget to test all of their different men’s fragrances. You can also find the different necessities and toys for the bedroom. Bruce and Ben make sure that every garment they purchase is suitable for South Florida weather and South Beach style — fashionable, sexy, and comfortable. And what is great about the boutique

is that Bruce and Ben allow unique apparel to sell out, guaranteeing that you will not be shocked at the next event you attend and involuntarily compete with another person in “Who Wore It Best.” If you can’t make it to the physical store itself, Creative Male offers an online boutique with select items. Bruce and Ben also give back to the community by hosting multiple fundraising events for different LGBT organizations, offering amazing discounts throughout the year. To keep up, follow them on Facebook at (www.facebook.com/CreativeMale) and join their mailing list at CreativeMale.com. CREATIVE MALE 222 NE 25TH ST. Etz Chaim Synagogue A Safe Haven for Jewish Gays, Lesbians

by Jameer

o Have you heard the good news? Etz Chaim has come home. Just last year in July, Fort Lauderdale’s only gay and lesbian synagogue staged a comeback in Wilton Manors. Since its inception in 1974, the synagogue has moved from location to location in South Florida. But after a brief stint in Tamarac, Rabbi Noah Kitty decided to return to Wilton Manors because that is where most of the synagogue’s members live . Rabbi Kitty has been with the synagogue since 1994 and currently serves as its executive director. She is passionate about her role

16

and strives to grow the membership of the synagogue by focusing attention and resources on marketing. She reaches out to prospects personally and works one-on-one with individuals who are interested in converting to Judaism. Etz Chaim provides a safe haven for gay and lesbian non-orthodox Jews to worship and feel accepted. The synagogue follows the Jewish calendar and all the important religious holidays. Anybody is welcome to attend Shabbat on Fridays at 8:00 p.m. “We are very appreciative of the warm welcome by everyone in Wilton Manors,” Rabbi Noah Kitty. The synagogue offers annual memberships. Members partici-

EXHIBIT OPENING

BY CLIFF DUNN

For Chris Dunham, “Thirteen.Three” Is a Very Personal Journey into Suicide

o

Every thirteen minutes and three seconds, someone in America commits suicide. For South Floridian Christopher Dunham, that statistic was made devastatingly personal on January 10, 1998, when his father, Roger, a successful business person and family man, killed himself. “My father’s suicide blew a hole right open in the center of my life, my mom’s, our entire family,” Dunham says. “I was trying to build a business, and struggling to keep a relationship together. His death threw those into turmoil.” For most of the people who know Chris Dunham, he is a longtime South Florida resident, former Major League Baseball player with the Cleveland Indians organization, successful business person (Dunham Insurance Services), philanthropist, and contributor to progressive political causes and candidates. But there is another side that many who know him well have not had an opportunity to see, a side that has battled addiction, selfdestruction, loneliness, and what he characterizes as his “demons.” “I learned the hard way that suicide doesn’t end a single life. What followed for me was a living hell. Dad’s death impacted everything: The image I had of myself. My relationships with my family and my co-workers. My first long-term relationship hit the rocks and never recovered. I drowned myself in a sea of misery, and I chased it down with alcohol, meaningless sex, and drugs with every letter of the alphabet—from ‘K’ through ‘X’.” His journey to come to terms with his father’s suicide, the impact it has had on every part of his life, and what he decided to do about the conflicting emotions and personal turmoil are the inspiration and foundation for

“Thirteen.Three,” an installation art exhibit designed and produced by Dunham, and presented at the House of Art gallery (415B NW 26th Street, Miami) for three weeks, beginning March 13, 2015. “People who choose suicide are seeking something, but what are they looking for?” Dunham asks. “Peace? Enlightenment? Heaven? “Most of the conversation about suicide theguymag

guymagtube

concerns what can be done to prevent it, to save those who choose to end their lives. This exhibit is about those who survive. Who tries to save them?” Dunham says that the path followed by the survivors of someone who takes his or her own life is a personal journey, one that is dark and fraught with emotion: Guilt at not having done enough for the dead loved one. Feelings of ambivalence (anger, sadness, despair, frustration, loneliness, hatred, disappointment) towards the departed for what he or she has done. The list and kinds of collateral damage abounds: Broken families. Substance and alcohol abuse. Recurring nightmares. According to Dunham’s vision, “Thirteen. Three” transports the participant to a journey into the last minutes of a chaotic mind, one “that chooses to end the living hell in which it finds itself.” The residual effects are felt most powerfully by the survivors, who—in the wake of the suicide—must contend with their own hell: Their journey to finding enlightenment is only just beginning. As Dunham explains, there are two journeys being undertaken when a suicide occurs: There is the journey of the tortured soul who is seeking a release from pain. And there is the unplanned journey of the survivors. It, too, is a journey of enlightenment—no matter that it is unexpectedly taken, and even unwanted. “He thought he was doing us a favor, but he wasn’t,” Dunham acknowledges about his father’s death. “When Dad killed himself, I didn’t have the tools to deal with the overflow of feelings and emotions,” he adds. “When they came, they came on like a Category 5 hurricane. The anger, the resentment, the confusion, the loneliness, the loss. But especially the anger. And who did I direct it at? Me, of course.” For the exhibit, Dunham is utilizing art installations, an artistic genre of three-dimensional work that is designed to transform the viewer’s perception of the exhibition space. “Thirteen. Three” is comprised of seven interactive installations that were designed by Dunham to capture the disturbing and somber mood of the environs utilized by those who commit suicide, something that enables audiences to experience the meaning of the installation. share with us on guymag.net

‘…WHAT I AM STILL LEARNING AND RE-LEARNING EVERYDAY—IS THAT I CAN FINALLY LET GO OF THE PAIN, THE ANGER.’ The seven art installations of “Thirteen. Three,” and what each represents, include: • “COLLATERAL DAMAGE”—depicting the roughly 22 veterans who commit suicide per day, or one every 65 minutes. • “CONTEMPLATION”—the huge impact of suicide rates in Asia and the Far East. • “SHOOTER DOWN”—depicting those who, like Dunham’s father, use a gun range to commit the act. • “REPERCUSSIONS”—concerning the tragic impact that bullying contributes to suicide rates. • “THE JUMPER”—depicting suicide by bridge, which is more likely to be impulsive than other means. • “THE CUTTER”—representing the toll of self-harm, even in high-functioning individuals. • “ISOLATION”—depicting hotel room suicides. “I want to know, to understand, what my dad went through. Ironically, I got to experience a taste of it firsthand as a result of what he did. I didn’t bring this on myself, but I definitely got to feel the full measure of anxiety and panic attacks, recurring bouts of depression—which wasn’t helped by the substance abuse, which I fully embraced. And of course there was an uncontrollable stream of explosive anger, mostly directed at my mom and my romantic partners, and friends who were only trying to be there to support me. “What I learned in the intervening 17 years—what I am still learning and re-learning everyday—is that I can finally let go of the pain, the anger. There is life after a loved one commits suicide. theguymag

BARTENDER OF THE WEEK

Albert Pierantoni Of Progress Bar by Jameer

baptiste

o It’s amazing what you can do when you work hard and remain determined. Albert Pierantoni moved to South Florida from Tampa roughly six years ago. Since then, he has been planting seeds in the community that have opened one door after another for him. He first settled in South Beach only to get leery of it quite quickly. Within a brief six months, he decided to relocate to Wilton Manors where he would be closer to his job at Hotspots Magazine. But always pushing himself to try new things and realizing that he wanted a change, Pierantoni left his sales manager position at the magazine and started working at Georgie’s Alibi as a server. While there, an intriguing opportunity presented itself in the form of the Stoli Cocktail Challenge at B. Bar and Grill (formerly known as Bills Filling Station). Not knowing much about mixing drinks, Pierantoni still entered and took second place in the competition. But what he gained from it was so much more than just runnerup; it sparked an interest in him. And yet again Pierantoni was on the move to conquer a newfound passion for bartending. With no experience, however, he realized he would have to start from the bottom, so Pierantoni pursued a job at the one place in town where he knew its owner had begun his career the same way. Pierantoni has known the owner of Rumors for sometime and knows the story of how he started out as a bar-back only to become a successful bar-owner today. So Pierantoni went to work at Rumor’s and absorbed everything he could about mixology. He learned the basics quickly and was eventually rewarded with bartending shifts at the club. At the same time, Albert also turned 30 years old — a pivotal age to work hard and achieve

more based on an early tragedy that happened to him growing up in Tampa. Pierantoni grew up as the youngest of five brothers, and throughout his adolescent years, he lived comfortably. But all that changed when he decided to come out shortly before his senior year of high school. The only love he received from his family thereafter was from his mother. His father and brothers became distant. Tragedy struck when his mother passed away as Pierantoni was discovering the world in his mid-20’s. Alone and heartbroken, Pierantoni fled Tampa to pursue his mother’s advice: “You can only gain success by driving yourself to be better.” The pain of losing his mother left him reckless in life, but Pierantoni’s 30th birthday was precisely when his mother’s encouraging words resurfaced. While bartending at Rumors, Pierantoni picked up a second job as an administrative assistant at

Leatherwerks. He worked both jobs or roughly 80 hours a week, yet still found time to enter the Mr. VP competition at Village Pub. Becoming Mr. Village Pub in 2014 meant he was now that bar’s public face. All of sudden, he became a celebrity on Wilton Drive. It’s been a little over a year since Pierantoni turned 30, enjoying the title of Mr. Village Pub 2014 and will crown his successor later this year. He’s taken bar-hopping to a new level by landing a new job at Progress Bar in Wilton Manors. As logistics manager and event coordinator, Pierantoni not only gets to control the daily operations of the bar, he also gets to handle all the different events at the bar. Now the question is: Where in town hasn’t Pierantoni worked?

TRAVEL

BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

Your Staycation Just Got that Much More Affordable!

Cirque du Soleil La Nouba

o

Staycations became popular during our most recent financial crisis, the recession of 2006. People all over the U.S. were cutting unnecessary expenses just so they can pay for the essentials: Food, water, electricity, etc. It was a severe time of distress in which individuals and families could just no longer afford the simple luxuries of life let alone head out for weeklong trips to desired travel destinations. So we had to think smart and find alternatives to entertain our family and escape from the woes of life’s hustle and bustle. One of those alternatives was to enjoy the splendors and wonders of our own hometown, which allowed us to return from a short distance back home to forgo expensive lodging. The staycation recipe worked and gave us the relief we needed. But as Floridians, we can push the savings further to make our stayca-

tions even more affordable. Florida is known for its many local attractions and world-renown theme parks. Some of these locations offer countless savings exclusive only to Florida residents. Some times these discount are blatant and very common and other times they are hidden and somewhat hard to find. But they’re there and available to us so why not take advantage of them. Orlando and Tampa have some of the best theme parks in the world and fortunately for us, they’re located in our immediate universe. These two travel destinations provide us with some of the most thrilling and enjoyable staycations in the world. Universal Orlando Resort (6000 Universal Boulevard Orlando, FL 32819 Phone: 407-363-8000) is home to two theme parks and a waterpark: Universal Studios theguymag

Florida (The Wizarding World of Harry Porter — Diagon Alley), Universal’s Islands of Adventure (The Wizarding World of Harry Porter — Hogsmeade), and Wet ‘n Wild. Each park has single day passes that stay fixed at the same price for Florida residents and non-Florida residents. However, if you decide to experience two days or more the savings start to kick in. Florida residents enjoy a savings of 20% less than non-Florida residents on both single park admissions and park-to-park admissions. There’s also deep savings for you theme park fanatics who enjoy experiencing the thrills and adventures year-round. Take advantage of the choice between one of their three annual pass options that start at a 12% savings from the original pricing. The resort also offers Florida residents Flexpay options on the annual passes, which helps by allowing us to pay the full cost in low monthly installments. Florida residents receive even more of discount when we purchase online. Many other Florida theme parks and waterparks offer the same steep discounts for Florida residents. The enchanting Walt Disney World (Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830 Phone: 407-939-7679) provides Floridians with the chance to save on their 4 theme parks and 2 water parks. You can experience Busch Gardens (10165 N. McKinley Dr. Tampa, FL 33612 Phone: 888800-5447) and the other SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment attractions at reduced ticket prices. Surprise your kids with an adventure to the latest Florida attraction, LegoLand (6000 Cypress Gardens Blvd. Winter Haven, FL 33884 Phone: 877-350-5346), and save 15% on daily tickets and multi-passes. There are even hyper-local attractions within the South Florida area that offer savings to just Florida Residents like Miami’s own Jungle Island (1111 Parrot Jungle Trail Miami, FL 33132 Phone: 305-400-7000). This year we can take advantage of the South Florida resident’s 2015 promotion for only $34.95. The share with us on guymag.net

DEEP INSIDE HOLLYWOOD

Dancing with the Sam, Peter Dinklage, Thomas Roberts, Movie Update by

Romeo San Vicente

DANCING WITH THE SAM

o

You have to hand it to Michael Sam – he does not quit. The first openly gay NFL prospect will try, try again on March 22, when he participates in a veteran’s combine. This one will include football’s between-teams free agents, aka, other players in Sam’s boat, guys who will participate in a variety of activities like position-specific drills, all while scouts watch and size them up. And Sam’s next nonfootball job should probably help keep him flexible for that day: He’s going to be part of the 20th season of Dancing Peter Dinklage with the Stars. Obviously, if [Photo by KathClick] the combine goes well and he’s got to ditch the world of tables-turned comedy brutalism ballroom dancing for a spot you’d expect an independenton a team somewhere, he can minded artist to warm up to. This always forget the choreography is how you run your own show. on the next week’s show. Dancing Shooting is scheduled to take to “Super Bowl Shuffle” seems place during Dinklage’s next break really complicated anyway, so it’ll from Thrones. be entirely understandable if that’s how it goes down. THOMAS ROBERTS IN THE AFTERNOON O’LUCKY DAY FOR DINKLAGE

o

Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, for years, even in the beginning of his career when he really needed it, has refused to take roles traditionally handed to little people, stuff like Santa’s elves and leprechauns. He pushed his way into parts probably written for men double his height, and now he’s famous, which is called having the last laugh. Next step, then? Another last laugh, of sorts – a leprechaun comedy called O’Lucky Day, to be directed by Adam Shankman (Hairspray). Before you consider it to be some sort of capitulation, go watch Bad Santa, because that’s what this story line sounds like: a bad-news con man posing as a leprechaun who’s out to fleece the gullible. In other words, the perfect sort of snarling,

Thomas Roberts, the gay anchor of MSNBC’s Way Too Early (its 5:30 a.m. show), has a shot at being their afternoon news star. Starting March 2, the network replaced Ronan Farrow Daily and The Reid Report with a daily two-hour block of news programming, from 1 to 3 p.m. Eastern, featuring Roberts. The move comes as a response to flagging daytime ratings and a desire for that slot’s programming to feature more breaking news. Roberts has already worked as a correspondent for CBS News and contributed to Entertainment Tonight, before landing at MSNBC in 2010. For the sake of LGBT TV personalities in need of jobs, we’re happy about this and hoping for robust ratings. But really, we’re just happy that theguymag

the handsome journalist will be available to be admired at a reasonable hour instead of at the crack of pre-dawn. No amount of coffee was going to help with that. UPDATE ON THOSE MOVIES YOU WERE HOPING TO SEE:

o

Remember when Tom Ford showed he could direct a movie with A Single Man? Sure you do. It was only about five years ago. And then remember when he just didn’t follow it up with anything? Well, that might change soon, if the fashiondesigner-turned-filmmaker gets his way. He’s being quiet about details, but he says it’s going to be a two-part thriller based on some popular books. And that he wants to start shooting in the fall of this year. And that, friends, is all the information he deems fit to share right now. If it starts to fall together in a more newsworthy way, you’ll hear about it… And then there’s Pee-Wee Herman and Judd Apatow, who have struggled for years to get that next P-WH film made and distributed. Well, now Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday has a home, one suitably modern for the ageless, small-suited, manchild: Netflix. His stardom peak was 30 years ago, after all, which means that a theatrical release could be marketed incorrectly and misfire. This way, streaming via Netflix becomes a way to get the movie to the right cool-audience eyes without too much budget spent on promotion and fear of butts in seats on opening weekend. We love this so much we’re going to marry it.

GUESTHOUSE

Enjoy a Home Away from Home at Coral Reef Guesthouse

by Jameer

baptiste

o Owner R.W. Wilson bought Coral Reef Guesthouse in 2010 and has done wonders to transform the property from — what he said “looked like the Golden Girls throw up in there” — into what is now a gorgeous Key West motif. Through the powder blue wooden estate doors and beyond the guesthouse office, you stroll across an enclosed sanctuary. And as you step foot onto a brick pathway, your eyes can clearly scan the guest rooms that open onto the main focal point of the villa paradise, the courtyard. The courtyard is lined with sparkling white lounge chairs. Some are positioned perfectly under shady foliage of flawlessly manicured palm trees, while others are arranged strategically throughout the courtyard for maximum sun exposure. the buff or in your best swimwear, it’s your choice. Take a dip in the heated pool or soak in a 12-person jacuzzi. When you’re done, wash off in one of the two outdoor showers. Corel Reef Guesthouse is your home away from home. There are only eight guest rooms on the property. Wilson is constantly around because he lives across the street, where he has just opened up a ninth room to catch any overflow. “I look at the Coral Reef as an extension of my home,” he said. Each newly renovated room comes with a mini frig, free Wi-Fi and premium cable television. Each room offers a different décor and some are remodeled with sleek, rain-shower head bathrooms. Most of the rooms are connected by a door to accommodate groups who may want to share living spaces. A suite and the owner’s suite are equipped with a full kitchen and theguymag

open up onto their own private patios. The owner’s suite has a separate living room. Coral Reef Guesthouse is clothing optional and straight-friendly. This year, reservations can be made through Booking.com, Hotels.com, and Expedia. However, Wilson recommends that guests book directly from the Coral Reef Guesthouse website (www.coralreef.metromediaworks.net) for the best prices. Right now, take advantage of his seasonal promotion, $99-anight, Monday – Thursday (select rooms only) that can be extended through the weekend.

Marti Cummings o “The love child of Liza Minnelli and Johnny Weir” has an expansive career that has included off-Broadway theatre, national tours, one-man shows, and the hit dance single “Real Girl.” Marti Cummings’ shtick is not the typical diva glam, but more of an androgyny in which he sports beautiful dresses and heels while still looking like a man. Until now, Marti Cummings’ nightlife performances only took place at such New York City venues as New World Stages, The Ritz, and Barracuda; fortunately, tonight he will be bringing his unique brand of song, dance, and stand-up to the Village Pub. 10 p.m. Village Pub. 2283 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors. 33305.

o “Jessie’s Girl” became a national sensation in the 1980s and, since that time, Rick Springfield’s name has become synonymous with the title “one hit wonder.” The Australian singer-songwriter actually began his career as an actor, having played Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital and having a bit role in Saga of a Star World—a show that would become Battlestar Galactica. THE WEEK Saturday

3/14

Wicked o One of Broadway’s biggest musicals, Wicked not only captivated audiences across America when it first premiered, but it also began the trend of retelling classic stories from the “evil” character’s point of view (recently seen in blockbuster film Maleficent). Here, the Wicked Witch of the West is given the backstory treatment, and her plot proves that she wasn’t all that “wicked” after all. Based upon the bestselling book by Gregory Maguire, Wicked includes such classic Broadway songs as “Defying Gravity” and “Popular.” 8:00 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

Pi Day o In honor of America’s favorite math related holiday—pi day, as in 3.14…—Funky Buddha presents their own take on the academic holiday. The Oakland Park brewery will be showcasing some interesting brews celebrating the magic number that unlocked so many math theorems. Rolling Chefs and Mr. PB&J will be outside with pairings for the pie-inspired brews (a clever pun). Some of the expected brews include Key Lime Pie Berliner, Bonita Applebum, Lemon Meringue Berliner, and Blueberry Cobbler. 12:00 p.m. Funky Buddha Brewery. 1201 NE 38th St. Oakland Park. 33334.

Guests will enjoy drinking, dancing, and the many spectacular views of Fort Lauderdale’s waterways while floating down the Venice of America. The Garlic Knot New York Pizza and More

by Tim

HarT

o It’s the place your friends are talking about—“that great pizza place” in Oakland Park!!! That is how I found this place. It took me a while to get there my first time, but the one visit was all it took. I was hooked. This is a great place for lunch or dinner. The atmosphere is very casual. They boast “the best food around and an atmosphere to match.” You do not need to dress up at all. There is plenty of seating (indoor and out) and ample parking in the Publix shopping plaza at the corner of Commercial and Dixie. The menu is a traditional Italian. There are the standard starters—Garlic Bread ($4,50), Mozzarella Sticks (10 for $7.25) and Chicken Wings (10 fo $7.75) in a number of flavors: Hot, Medium, Mild, BBQ, Teriyaki, and Tangy Cajun. Dipping Sauces include Blue Cheese and Ranch. But the MUST HAVE are the Garlic Knots (5 for $2.75; 10 for $4.25). I get mine with melted mozzarella cheese and some marinara dipping sauce ($4.50). It is almost a meal in itself. Every time I have gone there—bar none—I have been treated like a customer that they want to see again! My server makes sure that my order is prepared in such a way

that it minimizes the price and maximizes the amount of food I get— WHAT COULD BE BETTER!!! The effect is to maximize my enjoyment. For lunch. they have a number of moderately priced specials ($6 - $7) that include a soda. The specials include a slice of Pizza and some Knots, a Stromboli, Breaded Chicken or my favorite, the Sausage Roll. The portions are more than enough to fill you up. Their regular menu has no fewer than 30 specialty pizzas in varying sizes—Personal (9 inches), Medium (12 inches), Large (16 inches) and XL (18 inches) in price ranging from $8.25 to $25.99 (depending on the toppings). The names are as colorful as the pizzas themselves. There’s Mott Street ($15.75 to $22.50) with Chicken, Mushrooms, Onions, Spinach and Garlic; Ebbet’s Field ($14.25 to $20.50), a White Pizza with Spinach, Tomato and Garlic; the Brooklyn Bridge ($14.75 to $21.25) with Spinach, Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Black Olives and Red Onions; and my own favorite, the Wall Street ($13.75-$20), a meat lovers feast with Pepperoni, Sausage, and Extra Cheese. Mama Mia! In addition to pizza, there are loads of standard Italian dishes. Among the specialities are Spa-

ghetti with Two Sausages ($8.75), Chicken Cutlet Parmigiana ($10.25), Eggplant Parmigiana ($10.25), and Meat Lasagna ($10.25). For the kids, there is a nice Ice Cream Sundae Bar ($1.99). The Calzones are large and stomach stuffers. You can’t go wrong trying the Combo Zone ($9.25), with Sausage, Pepperoni, Mushroom, Red Onion, Green Pepper, Black Olive, and three Cheeses. Or for the really indulgent, sty a Stuffed Slice ($4.45), with Pepperoni, Canadian Bacon, Sausage, Meatball and Mozzarella. Try them and I think you’ll be convinced! Their generations-old recipes, made-from-scratch dough, authentic old-world sauces and cult-following garlic knots were created in New York and perfected in Colorado over a decade ago by native New Yorkers now serving great pizza and Italian food in a relaxed, family friendly atmosphere. Stop in the next time you’re in the neighbourhood and enjoy an old favourite or discover a new one.

RECREATION

Work Hard, Play Hard with Cycle Party

by Jameer

baptiste

o Cycle Party is group entertainment and fun exercise. The Fort Lauderdale-based company has created a unique outdoor pubcrawl experience that gives riders a self-propelled tour through the downtown and beach area of Fort Lauderdale. Here’s how it works: a Cycle Party tour guide steers a group bicycle (quadracycle) with 10 people pedaling, five on each side, as they operate the bar-top table contraption and enjoy the local scenery, sipping beverages of their choice as they ride. The quadracycle can actually hold up to 15 people so five lucky passengers can join in

on the fun but without having to lift a leg. It is a great way to tour Fort Lauderdale whether you’re celebrating a birthday, a bachelor/bachelorette party, a sightseeing tour during the day or just an interesting night out on the town. It also works well as a team builder for companies as employees work together to get from one destination to another. Cycle Party can be used for countless events: ice cream socials, fundraisers, church outings, dinners, tailgating, pub crawls, mixers and parades. The company’s two-hour tours are structured in multiple ways. You can book one with 6-15 of your friends for either a daytime excursion or a nighttime party with

3-4 stops along the way. You can also partake in a social tour, where you book a single seat and meet some new potential friends. Or you can craft your own fleet ride with up to three quadracycles that can accommodate 65 people. In addition to Broward County, Cycle Party provides a pub-crawl tour in West Palm Beach. SCREEN SAVOR

BY GREGG SHAPIRO

The Inevitable

o

There was much to love and admire about the 2011 film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Although it was a familiar formula – a group of people who might not otherwise become friends do so with wonderful results -- the film struck the right chord with audiences of all ages and became an unlikely box office hit. You know what that means, don’t you? The inevitable sequel. Director John Madden returns to helm

the sequel. As in the previous version, Maggie Smith steals every scene in which she appears. From the first, where her character Muriel joins entrepreneur Sonny (the increasingly hot Dev Patel) at a meeting with a New York hotel franchise headed by Ty (David Strathairn) to discuss a potential business partnership, to the last, where she may be saying farewell in her own way. In between, there’s the wedding of Sonny and Sunaina (Tina Desai) to plan, the arrival of new hotel guests Guy (Richard Gere) and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig) – one of whom might be employed by the New York hotel company, a business proposition for Evelyn (Judi Dench), a decision about suitors for Madge (Celia Imrie) and a divorce to finalize for Douglas (Bill Nighy).

L - R: Celia Imrie as “Madge Hardcastle,” Ronald Pickup as “Norman Cousins,” Diana Hardcastle as “Carol,” Judi Dench as “Evelyn Greenslade,” Maggie Smith as “Muriel Donnely” and Bill Nighy as “Douglas Ainslie” in The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel [Courtesy of Fox Searchlight]

There’s also plenty of tomfoolery involving mistaken identities, miscommunications, jealousy and other intrigues. Being a sequel, without having the novel by Deborah Moggach for its basis, Ol Parker’s screenplay relies more heavily on humor than heart. The jokes, mostly coming from Sonny, are shticky, as if the hotel was in the Catskills instead of Jaipur. It’s not all schlock – Sonny’s line about questioning his own sexuality after meeting Guy is handled well. But, unlike with the first film, watching TSBEMH, felt like setup for yet another sequel on the docket. Even worse, the film lagged on more than one occasion, becoming, dare it be said, boring. For these reasons, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel will always be second best.

So far, one Disney cartoon character has survived the transition from animation to liveaction and that’s Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmations. Of course, that probably has more to do with the actress portraying the character, in this case the very versatile Glenn Close.

o

After the dismal live-action Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie in the only role she was truly born to play, it was probably inevitable that Disney would continue to crank out these kinds of movies. The proof is here in Cinderella (Disney), opening in theaters in March. As with Maleficent, the (future) princess is far less interesting than the evil villainess. In the case of Cinderella, Cate Blanchett fully embodies the despicable Lady Tremaine, the widowed mother of two who marries the widowed father (Ben Chaplin) of Ella (Lily James). Following the death of Ella’s father, Tremaine’s abuse of Ella begins. She and her dreadful daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drizella (Sophie McShera) treat Ella less like family and more like an indentured servant. The one high point in Ella’s life is forest encounter with hot Kit, aka Prince Charming (Richard Madden), although she is unaware of his identity and status. What follows is the announcement of a ball to find the Prince a suitable bride, Cinderella’s transformation at the hands (or should that be wand?) of her Fairy Godmother (Helena Bonham Carter, providing comic relief while wearing Meryl Streep’s Hollywood teeth from Into The Woods), the lengthy dance sequence, the stroke of midnight and so on. Everyone already knows the story, a tale as old as time. Sadly, neither Chris Weitz’s screenplay, Kenneth Branagh’s lackluster direction, the unimaginative special effects, or the questionable costuming and hair situations (gay men would be wise to pay attention to Tremaine’s styling) does anything to make it better than the original 1950 Disney cartoon version or the 1965 TV musical version, for that matter. Even the Frozen Fever short, featuring the voices of Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell, in which a head cold results in snotty snowmen (no kidding), which precedes the movie, isn’t up to par.

Sleep Your Way to a Healthier, Sexier You! by Tom

bonanTi

o

Sleep is important to your well being. However, according to the National Sleep Foundation, at least 40 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder. How much sleep one needs depends upon the individual. Most people who say, “I can do with five or six hours a night,” are just plain fooling themselves. Evidence points to a need for at least eight hours of sleep per night and often as much as nine or more hours. We can get by on less, but eventually this “sleep debt” can be hard to overcome. Lack of proper “beauty sleep” can get ugly on many levels. Besides bags and circles, sleep deprivation has been linked to such serious conditions as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression and even obesity. Fortunately, there is a lot you can do to get a good night’s sleep. First of all, you need to figure out what is keeping you awake. What’s really bugging you? Stress is the number one cause of shortterm sleeping difficulties. Financial or relationship concerns or pressures at work can trigger long hours of sleeplessness. Often just venting your anxieties to a friend or a professional counselor can relieve inner turmoil. Environmental factors – room temperature, noise, bright lights and an uncomfortable mattress – can cause sleeplessness. A busy lifestyle is another factor in poor sleep. Computers, cell phones (turn it off at night, you’re not that popular!) and television can make it difficult for you to “unplug” and allow your body and mind to slow down enough to sleep. If you are on medications or have specific health problems, check with your doctor, because these can all interfere with your sleep. If you sleep soundly for at least eight hours a night, you will be more wide-awake and alert during the day. If you are tired much of the time and feel like dozing off during the day, then you are not getting the quality sleep you need. Depression and high blood

pressure are only a few indications of prolonged sleep deprivation. This is serious and you need to take action. Here are some tips to help you fix your problem. Regular exercise consisting of light aerobic activity (power walking or cycling) two to three times a week for 30 or 40 minutes is a great start. Combine this with weight training twice a week for 30 minutes to an hour and you have a sure formula for better sleep at night. Most trained athletes sleep soundly, and those just getting introduced to a regular exercise program say that sounder sleep is the first physical reaction they experience from their conditioning regime. Go to bed and get up on a regular schedule, even on weekends. Keep to your schedule and try not to nap during the day. Taking a brief 20 minute cat-nap in the afternoon can make some people sharper, more alert, and promote faster recuperation from exercise. Avoid the deep sleep that comes from longer naps. Pay attention to your surroundings. Minimize noise, light, and extreme temperatures in the bedroom. Cut out TV before bed in favor of reading, quiet music, or a warm bath. Pay attention to what you put into your body. Avoid caffeinated drinks four to six hours before bed. No large meals, alcohol, or smoking before you hit the sack.
