Equality Florida Announces Ambitious Future Goals Tallahassee, FL – Following their recent recap of 2013, Equality Florida has announced their ambitious goals for 2014 “and beyond,” reinforcing the notion that “Florida is the front line” for equality in the south. “In the fight for LGBT equality, Florida leads among Southern states and has become the new frontline,” said Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida. “The next three years are primed for huge breakthroughs in this battleground state that will ripple nationwide.”

Equality Florida has outlined their goals for 2014, which includes three specific objectives: Full marriage equality in Florida in three years, statewide employment protection, and to “keep winning locally.” “It will take a fight like we’ve never seen before, but with a growing, bipartisan majority of Floridians on our side, we are gearing up to win,” read the statement regarding marriage equality in Florida. “We have screened more than one thousand potential plaintiffs and are preparing to go to court to challenge Florida’s marriage ban.” In 2014, the organization aims to continue pushing for policies that provide “immediate and vital benefits, even in the least hospitable areas” of Florida. Equality Florida is still accepting donations for their year-end campaign in hopes of reaching future goals. For more information, or to donate to the cause, visit eqfl.org.

Pensacola, FL – Last Thursday, the Pensacola City Council gave the final nod to establishing a domestic partnership registry. The ordinance allows coupled, unmarried adults (gay and straight) to register as domestic partners for the price of a small fee. After registering, couples will be allowed to make medical and funeral decisions for one another, visit each other in hospitals or prisons, and will provide additional rights to educa-

couples – regardless of gender – to make important financial, medical, and emergency decisions together. Our city joins with cities and counties making up over 55% of the state’s population in granting these important rights to its citizens.”

A local bartender, Chris Brown, told the Pensacola News Journal that he is happy the registry passed. “I feel like if I had a partner and they were ill, it should be my right to go and visit them in the hospital,” Brown said. “It’s a good step for Pensacola.” No opponents of the registry were present at the meeting according to PNJ, and not one person spoke out against it. Sara Latshaw, regional director for the director for the American Civil Liberties Union and authot of the registry, said that the vote was a victory “for everyone in Pensacola.” “With the new domestic partnership registry, all families will have access to tools to help them build a life together and protect their loved ones,” she told PNJ. “The domestic partnership registry will fulfill the promise that Pensacola is a welcoming community where we treat our neighbors with fairness by allowing

Republican Senators Sponsor New Discriminatory Bill Washington, D.C. – Sponsored by 11 Republican Senators, a new bill has emerged that focuses on protecting the tax-exempt status of churches and religious nonprofits who oppose marriage equality. The bill, known as the Marriage and Religious Freedom Act, would keep federal agencies from revoking the taxexempt status of said organizations, according to the Washington Examiner. The bill’s author, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), says that Obama encouraging the acceptance of gay marriage is a potential threat for religious liberty. “We need not just statements, but we need legislation to protect religious liberty from this kind of potential threat,” Lee told the Examiner. “What I would like to do is make sure that we go out of our way to protect churches from adverse action that could be taken against them as a result of their doctrinal views of the definition of marriage.” Though Lee said that some Democrats have shown interest in reviewing the bill, none of have endorsed it yet. “Nearly every member of Congress on both ends of the Capitol, on both sides of the aisle, will at least purport to be a strong supporter of religious

liberty, and this should be an uncontroversial position to take,” Lee continued. “I don’t think anyone believes that the federal government ought to be making religious doctrinal decisions on behalf of churches and other religious institutions.”

Social Security Offers Survivor Benefits to Same-Sex Couples Washington, D.C. – According to an announcement made this week by the Social Security Administration, widowed gay and lesbian Americans are now eligible for collecting their spouse’s social security survivor benefits. “I am pleased to announce that effective today, Social Security is processing some widow’s and widower’s claims by surviving members of same-sex marriages and paying beenfits where they are due,” commissioner Carolyn W. Colvin said in a statement. “In addition, we are able to pay some onetime lump sum death benefit claims to surviving same-sex spouses. As I stated shortly after the Supreme Court decision on Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, our goal is to treat all Americans with dignity and respect.” Colvin asks any eligible Americans to come forward and apply immediately

ew Dehli, India – Last week, India’s Supreme Court reversed a 2009 ruling that decriminalized sodomy, reinstating a colonial law that prohibits “carnal intercourse against the order of nature with man, woman, or animal,” according to The New York Times. Now, same-sex intercourse will again be a crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison. The Human Rights Campaign was less than thrilled by the decision, stating that the ruling “recriminalizes love.” “It is incomprehensible that a court of law would take the side of discrimination against LGBT citizens,” said HRC vice president Jeff Krehely in a statement. “Criminalizing LGBT relationships leads to dangerous situations, not just for committed couples but also for LGBT

to gain access to the benefits. For more information, Colvin encourages Americans to check out the Social Security Administration’s page dedicated to same-sex couples (socialsecurity.gov/same-sexcouples).

New Jersey Advances on Trans Birth Certificate

EDITOR

Trenton, NJ – Last week, the New Jersey Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens committee passed a bill in a vote of 6-2 that could very well shape the future for transgendered individuals born in New Jersey. The bill, known as Senate Bill 2786, will make it easier for transgender people to change their birth certificate to match their true gender identity, regardless of surgeries. If passed, Senate Bill 2786 will replace a 1984 statute that restricts birth certificate revisions only to those transgendered individuals that have undergone surgeries. Basically, the law would allow a transgender person who received hormone therapy to obtain updated records following a proof of treatment affidavit signed by their medical provider. The bill would make great strides for the transgender community, as many people cannot afford the costly surgery right away, if at all. In order to be passed, the bill must still go before the full Senate before it would get to Gov. Chris Christie.

youth, who today received a deeply harmful message that they are less than equal. We call on fair-minded people around the world to show solidarity with India’s LGBT community at this critical moment.” The original law against sodomy was put in place by the British in 1861 when India was still just a colony of the United Kingdom. Over the weekend, activists banded together to create a “Global Day of Rage,” which included a slew of worldwide protests that took place on Sunday. “This judgement is not about any one community in any one country but about the hegemonic structures that oppress many across the world,” wrote the event’s organizers on Facebook. “It is a blow to the various other LGBTIQ communities across the world who might have taken strength from the Indian story to challenge laws/social norms/prejudices that criminalise homosexuality in their own countries.”

to come out as gay. The NBA player was also among the first class of inductees to the National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame. Musicians and actors also played a key role in 2013 by publicly announcing support of gay marriage and rights. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis released the anthem known as “Same Love,” which dominated both airwaves and the hearts of everyone in the gay community. Macklemore has stated that he is not gay, but felt that he had to release the song and video as a single in an effort to combat homophobia. Academy Award-winning actress Tilda Swinton posed with a rainbow flag just outside of the Kremlin in Moscow just after the ban on “homosexual propaganda” was passed. Swinton stood bravely (yet somewhat somber) with the flag in hand, paired with a strong message: “In solidarity. From Russia with love.” Since the ban was passed, several actors and actresses have publicly announced their support of the gay community, including Madonna, Jonah Hill, Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Bacon, Kelly Osbourne and Fergie to name a few. The LGBT community wouldn’t be where it is today without the help of Justice Anthony Kennedy, who is often the swing vote in the Supreme Court. Kennedy, first appointed by President Ronald Reagan

in 1988, had a pivotal role in the case of United Staes v. Windsor, in which he wrote a majority opinion that lead to the eventual ruling that Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional. “DOMA’s principal effect is to identify a subset of state sanctioned marriages and make them unequal,” he wrote. “The principal purpose is to impose inequality, not for other reasons like governmental efficiency. Responsibilities, as well as rights, enhance the dignity and integrity of the person. And DOMA contrives to deprive some couples married under the laws of their State, but not other couples, of both rights and responsibilities.” Of course, Edie Windsor is the one who brought the case to the world’s attention after being constantly rejected by LGBT organizations that she sought support from. On the day of the biggest ruling of the year, Windsor politely stood in front of the crowded room to give her two cents. “Not only does a much larger portion of our country, and the straight members of our country, see us differently, as just people who live and love who bring up kids who will play with their kids, but our own community has come out and seen each other and loved each other in a way that makes me courageous and proud and joyous every day.”

ilton Manors, FL – 2013 was a quite the year for the gay community. Gay marriage was legalized in seven states, which consists of 37.6% of the total U.S. population. Athletes came out in order to show others who might be facing dilemmas (particularly teens who have endured bullying) that it’s okay to be the person you are, regardless of what other people may say. But perhaps the biggest shock of the year, came from the Catholic Church. Recently, both Time and Advocate named Pope Francis their “person of the year.” He is the first nonEuropean pope in 1,200 years, and has been gaining support due to his humble attitude towards issue like the role of women in the Catholic Church and of course, gay rights. “If a homosexual person is of good will and is in search of God, who am I to judge?” asked Pope Francis in his now infamous July interview. Though Francis’s popular quote landed him a spot on Advocate Magazine’s cover (complete with a photoshopped “No H8” on his cheek), his views on gay marriage leaves little to the imagination. He said that he does not support any non-traditional marriages as the definition of marriage is clearly established by God. However, the pontiff knows that sometimes it’s better to leave your political baggage at the door. “The teaching of the church … is clear,” he’s said in the past according to Time. “I am a son of the church, but it is not necessary to talk about those issues all the time.” Athletes also played a key role this year, coming forward as role models not only for aspiring young athletes but for the gay community as well. Brittney Griner, a player for the Phoenix Mercury of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), was one of the first athletes to come out this year. Griner’s advice was simple yet powerful: “Don’t hide who you really are.” Jason Collins – who last played for the Washington Wizards – was another public figure to break the mold by becoming the first active male professional athlete in a major North American team sport

Kevin Whitt The Man Behind the Drag

evin Whitt is a diverse individual. Part drag performer, part hair stylist, Kevin has the best of both worlds. And by both worlds, we mean the boy and the girl world. Born in Arkansas and raised in Texas, the recent South Florida transplant is eager to make his mark in a completely new environment (he told us he hadn’t ever been to South Florida before his move – he just knew he wanted to be by a beach).

hair. He attended Paul Mitchell in Dallas before being hired on as an assistant at Toni & Guy. Next, he began working at The Green Peridot in Cisco, Texas, owned by Daniel Lewis of Shear Genius Season 2. Following his success there, he opened his own salon suite, and even did hair for an episode of Bridezillas. “In Dallas, there’s a lot of celebrities,” Whitt explained. “There’s a lot of reality TV shows. I had a big local celebrity clientele in Dallas. I even had Beyonce’s vocal coach as a client. I left all of that to come down here.” While the move was a bold one, Whitt is happy down here. He has a job doing hair at Roma 6 Barber & Salon in Fort Lauderdale, and he MCs in drag every Friday night at John-

ny’s. He’s always loved MC’ing (professionally professionally for the past 10 years), where he feels he can be himself and still entertain people. He’s happy to be doing both of his passions and looks forward to a bright future in sunny South Florida. For more information on Kevin Whitt the stylist, check out stylesbykevin.com, or visit Roma 6 Barber & Salon at 2585 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderale, 33304. To see Whitt as Dominique, head on over to Johnny’s (1116 W Broward Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33312) for his Friday night shows, beginning at 11 p.m.

December 18, 2013 H 13

Whitt has been performing in drag (by the name Dominique) since he was 15 years old. He enjoyed it right away and knew that he had a future in it. His first paid drag gig in Dallas – a murder mystery dinner – was received so well that he was eventually booked at a highend dinner club. “In Dallas, I had my own show at Winston’s Supper Club,” Whitt told us. “It’s a straight nightclub, owned by Wade Smith of the Houston Texans. They actually hired me as a joke for Wade’s birthday. A girl came out with whipped cream on her breasts, and then I came out. It was the first time a drag queen probably walked through those doors. They loved me.” Looking at Whitt, you’d never guess he did drag; He looks just like any other guy. But interestingly enough, when he does drag, he strives for femininity instead of over-the-top hair and makeup. “It’s probably because I’m from Texas, but I love being ‘passable,’” he said. “When impersonating women, we should look like women, not clowns. I’ve always been more into glamor. Very ‘pageant,’ I guess?” Whitt said the same statement in his Ru Paul’s Drag Race Season 3 audition tape. While he didn’t make the final cut, Whitt’s tape did make it to the casting special episode. His tape is still aired occasionally before the start of new seasons. About nine years ago, Whitt began doing

Y100 Jingle Ball

Dolly Parton realizes just how hard our lives are out in the working world. The young gay professional has got to get his paycheck, yet, at the same time, “the man” can sure be a bitch. The 1980 film starring Ms. Parton and a pre-Drexell’s Class Dabney Coleman set the standard for comical revengeon-bosses films. Here, it’s been made into a musical, with a score written by Ms. Parton herself, as a trio of women conspire against their boss to make womanfriendly changes in the workplace. Broward Stage Door Theater. 8 p.m. 8036 W Sample Road, Coral Springs, 33065.

It was a shock, certainly, when Time named Pope Francis the Person of the Year ahead of Miley Cyrus. Let’s be perfectly frank: Miley owned 2013. From tearful, heartfelt feline renditions of “Wrecking Ball,” to smoking joints on stage, to that VMA performance, to feuding with an emotionally unstable Sinead O’Connor...If Miley wasn’t making headlines, it wasn’t the last half of 2013. What better way to cap off the year in Miley than with seeing her, live, on stage, at the Y100 Jingle Ball? If it’s anything like her recent Jingle Ball performance in LA, expect twerking Santas. Not only is she the opening act, but appearing as well is, none other than Mr. Inappropriate himself,

Robin Thicke. Other acts include Ariana Grande, Austin Mahone, Demi Lovato, Armin Van Buuren, Enrique Iglesias, Fall Out Boy, Flo Rida, Avril Lavigne, and a preevent celebration at 2 p.m. on Plaza with Fifth Harmony, Travie McCoy, Tegan & Sara, and Jake Miller. 7 p.m. BB&T Center. 1 Panther Pkwy, Sunrise, 33323. Miley Cyrus, David Sedaris and Bells in Boyland

The Santaland Diaries David Sedaris is sort of a literary gay superhero. His books become national bestsellers without a hitch, populating the shelves of every airport bookstore in the US. Sedaris’ career began with one singular broadcasting on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition in which he read his famous essay The SantaLand Diaries about his job as a Christmas elf at a Macy’s department store. From there, he shot to fame with collections of essays like Me Talk Pretty One Day and Naked. Here, Jamie Morris steps into the Sedaris role for the play adaptation. 8 p.m. Empire Stage. 1140 N. What’s Christmas without a little Nutcracker? Not like that! Tchaikovsky’s famous Christmas tradition comes alive in Miramar for its 39th annual performance. With over 100 international dancers this year, the magical production from Ballet Etudes Company features lavish sets and scenery, colorful costuming, exquisite lighting, superb choreography, and delightful theatrical effects. All that and a handsome, dancing toy soldier? The Nutcracker is gay Christmas at its finest. 8 p.m. Miramar Cultural Center. 2400 Civic Center Place, Miramar, 33025.

Matzoball

Wilton Drive

A recent self-help book for gay men recommended ditching gay culture altogether and focusing your mating efforts on straight men, because they’re probably closeted anyway and less likely to be bitter. Well, if you’re gay and also happen to be Jewish, take that book’s advice and spend Christmas Eve at the Matzoball, a traditional singles night created 27 years ago. Since young Jewish people would find themselves on vacation with nothing to do on a night where practically everything was closed, this wonderful mixer was created. Now a cultural institution, the Matzoball takes place at several venues across South Florida, including Liv, Il Baccio, and Panagea Lounge/Gryphon Nightclub. 8 p.m. Pangea Lounge & Gryphon Nightclub. 5707 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

It’s Christmas and you’re alone. The family is somewhere far away, and you didn’t bother to buy a plane ticket. Your boyfriend or girlfriend left you a good six months ago. It’s just rough to get out of bed. Work’s been bleak (recession and all), and no one except your dentist sent you a holiday card. Well, stop moping. Get to Wilton Drive on Christmas and drink. Stop at the Alibi, sing a few carols, and have some Jagermeister. Stop at Bill’s, order a few tequila shots, and toast to the holidays. Pretty soon you’ll be hallucinating three ghosts telling you to change your ways, or some angel reminding you what the world would be like if you were never born. Finally, go to Village Pub and drink some more. It’s the holidays after all: You deserve it! Establishments all open at various times. Wilton Drive. Wilton Manors, 33305.

The compact, seven-ounce WakaWaka solar charger juices up a phone in just a few hours and has a built-in light that can shine for more than 60 hours. Best of all? MULLED WINE (VIN CHAUD)

/floridaagenda

BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY

/floridaagenda

RECIPE

floridaagenda.com

C

When winter season swirls in, nothing could be cozier than a toasty mug of mulled wine. It’s the vine’s version of a classic hot toddy, and is a traditional holiday treat all over the World even in places like South Florida. I always think of our skiing outings when I have “Vin Chaud”. Mulled wines have been warming people for centuries, they are wines that have been sweetened, spiced and slightly heated - offering a fabulous alternative to traditional coffees, ciders and toddy’s at holiday gatherings or just because we need to get our party on under the palm trees. This recipe is for ten servings…so if you want more do the math. It’s always nice to taste as you go along, as some people may prefer more or less sweet.

• 2 bottles of dry red wine • 4 ounces port or brandy • 3/4 cup white sugar • 12 whole cloves • 4 cinnamon sticks • 2 large oranges, 1 squeezed and zested , 1 sliced for garnish

and garnish with cinnamon sticks or freshly ground nutmeg….you are the chef!

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.
