The week reflected back through fabulously funny eyes

BEAUTY IS PAINFUL. Kenny Rogers an American icon, an outstanding musician and a gambler. He knew when to hold ‘em. Knew when to fold ‘em. But unfortunately when it came to elective eye surgery to try and look younger, he didn’t know when to walk away or when to run. And now, quite frankly, he looks like Mao Zedong. IN THE LIGHT OF EVERYTHING GOING ON IN THIS WORLD. Rep. John Conyers nailed it: the Republicans are prioritizing the emails of Hillary Clinton over focusing on the gun violence that not only claimed lives in Orlando and Sandy Hook, but the heartbreaking events that took place on the streets of Minnesota and Louisiana, and the subsequent Dallas police tragedies. Let’s prioritize, people. Not only that, but government is going on vacation again (surprise, surprise) so the Hillary email “fuss” is just another excuse to delay much-needed legislation. I’m so glad that I don’t own a gun, but the NRA runs my life.

KNOCK KNOCK. Every time I think I’ve left Long Island for good, the ghost of Mary Jo Buttafuoco rears its ugly head and snatches me back in! SUMMER HIBERNATING. Is it just me or does this heat and humidity make everyone snap? Not a cute “bend and snap,” but more like Oxygen Network “Snapped!” THE SHADE OF IT ALL. It seems that every psycho out there keeps a journal. Shooters, serial killers, you name it. Obviously I’d be terrible at it because the last time I was able to keep a diary going for more than four days before I lost interest was probably in 3rd grade. I FEEL A READIN’ COMIN’ ON. Most of my Facebook friends have been my Facebook friends for 5+ years now and get my sense of humor, sometimes it’s crude, sometimes it’s tasteless, but it’s usually always in good fun. If you want to publicly announce on my page that I’m a “mean and hateful person” you can go have several seats. Trust me, I will stop patronizing your many failed businesses in the community. Perhaps your shitty attitude is why you can’t keep the doors of your businesses open for very long. FOLLOW THE PICTURES. I mean, I think it’s absolutely noble that the CEO of IKEA is going on the air and telling people about safety tips so that kids don’t die opening their dressers. Now If I could only understand what he’s saying in English, that would be great!

Adam Cohen is South Florida’s favorite and most fabulous social commentator. He’s also single. Find him on Facbook to keep up with his hilarious take on the week’s headlines. 4

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING... Random thoughts from social media and beyond this week Angela Eagle an out lesbian lawmaker of Britain could become the second female prime minister as she announces her candidacy, “I am a person who brings people together, and I don’t drive them apart. I will unite I will not divide. I can bring our party together again. I love my party and I love my country. We are at a crossroads. I am ready to lead. New “Hamilton” star Javier Muñoz, who is openly gay, spoke about living with HIV and surviving cancer. “I have been living with HIV since 2002, and I’m undetectable. I’m healthy, I’m strong and I’m very out about that because of the stigma still attached to it.”

Amanda Nunes became the first openly gay UFC fighter to win a title. “For years I’ve been working hard for this moment. I feel amazing. My girlfriend Nina is going to be the next UFC champion, and I love her.”

Logo network is shooting a gay ‘bachelor’ show, and the prize is Robert Sepulveda Jr. He’s an interior designer with Puerto Rican roots, which now lives in ATL. Production sources say, 13 male contestants have been cast and the show is filming at an L.A. mansion. The show is called “Finding Prince Charming” and it’s hosted by Lance Bass.

a Oakland Park resident Cam-Cam Berry said on Facebook, “All of these people are mad because their timeline is full of people playing Pokémon Go. I’m sorry that joy has been brought back to the your Facebook feed amongst all the carnage, death, despair, and the idiots that have been running for president. Pokémon may be a “stupid” game and people are “childish” for playing it, but do you have better things to do with your time? Some people like to have fun and have some sort of distraction from our shitty lives and meet new friends with the same fun mindset. July 14, 2016

News Briefs Go to floridaagenda.com for other exclusive stories. SUNSHINE STATE Assault weapons ban fails in Fort Lauderdale FORT LAUDERDALE—Vice mayor Dean Trantalis thought he had found an innovative way to keep assault weapons off the streets of Fort Lauderdale. In the city commission meeting on June 21, we suggested banning assault weapons such as AR-15 and AK-47 rifles from sale at gun shows as part of the terms of the lease for renting the city-owned War Memorial where the gun shows take place. Even before the city commission had an opportunity to vote on the measure, the National Rifle Association fired off a warning shot in the form of a letter from litigation counsel Christopher Conte, which said the concept violated state law. As Conte reminded the commissioners, passing such a law would personally make them responsible for damages and the likelihood of losing their jobs for breaking state law.

“We hope the city commission keeps this in mind when considering these matters in the future,” Conte wrote. City Attorney Cynthis Everett agrees. In a memorandum issued by her office, she referenced a University of North Florida rule that suggested that firearms could not be stored in cars on campus. That law was later overturned in court. The memorandum said the action Trantalis proposes “would constitute a rule or regulation of the municipal body, and is therefore prohibited by Florida law.” “Clearly, the approach I thought we could take, may not be possible,” Trantalis told the Sun Sentinel newspaper. The Fort Lauderdale Florida Gun Show operates eight shows a year at the War Memorial in Holiday Park. nn

Florida Democratic Caucus Releases Official Endorsements FORT LAUDERDALE--It was a night of celebration as Florida’s Democratic LGBTA Caucus held its annual summer conference last weekend at the Bahia Mar Resort. Among its many endorsements of the night, the caucus officially gave its blessing to the candidacy of Hillary Clinton. Although the Democratic presidential candidate hasn’t always been on the side of gays and lesbians, since 2013, when Hillary Clinton announced that she was in favor of same-sex marriage, she has been consistently behind the LGBT community. The endorsement of the caucus therefore came as no surprise. The caucus’s endorsement of US 6

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Weston), however, was more of an issue. Certain members of the caucus found Wasserman Schultz’s performance as the head of the Democratic National Committee to be consistently blundered. Wilton Manors Mayor Gary Resnick spoke on behalf of Wasserman Schultz, and pushed for her endorsement saying, ““You can’t abandon someone who has been on your side, year after year. It sends a bad message.” Other endorsements included Bob Poe, who is running for Congress in Orlando and is openly gay and HIV-positive; Carlos Guillermo Smith and Beth Tuura for state House in central Florida. nn

Bernie Sanders Endorses Hillary Clinton—Finally PORTSMOUTH, NH (AP) — Bernie Sanders, whose calls for a political revolution energized millions of voters, bestowed his longawaited endorsement on Hillary Clinton Tuesday, the Democratic former rivals embracing and praising each other before a cheering crowd of thousands. Just two weeks shy of the Democratic National Convention, Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, congratulated Clinton for winning the nomination and vowed to do everything he could to help her beat presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. “It is no secret that Hillary Clinton and I disagree on a number of issues — that’s what this campaign has been about,” Sanders said. But he added, “This campaign is not really about Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders, or any other candidate who sought the presidency. This campaign is about the needs of the American people and addressing the very serious crises that we face.” With a huge smile, Clinton embraced Sanders and they raised their arms in a traditional unity pose. Clinton told the crowd, which included some Sanders supporters who have been slow to come to Clinton’s side, that she was overjoyed to welcome “friends, old and new.” She echoed her campaign slogan, telling the crowd “we are stronger together.” With the convention approaching, Sanders said there has been a significant coming together between the two campaigns and “we produced, by far, the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party. Our job now is to see that platform implemented by a Democratic Senate, a Democratic House and a Hillary

Clinton president – and I am going to do everything I can to make that happen. Democrats have coalesced around Clinton’s candidacy since she defeated Sanders in primaries last month in California and five other states, led by endorsements from President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and others. Sanders has spent the past month seeking to influence the party’s platform for the Philadelphia convention and promote electoral reforms including allowing independents to participate in future primaries. The platform includes many of his proposals, including a $15 an hour minimum wage, tougher restrictions on Wall Street and an end to the death penalty. The Vermont senator saw his longshot bid for the White House quickly catch fire in 2015 at largescale rallies where he denounced income inequality, the influence of Wall Street and the role of big money in politics — all part of a system he described as “rigged.” Sanders was powered by an impressive online fundraising machine that raised more than $200 million and threatened Clinton’s once overwhelming lead in the Democratic primaries with the help of college students, independents and white voters drawn to his anti-establishment message. His endorsement could help bring some of those supporters into the fold for Clinton as she faces Republican Donald Trump. “In these stressful times for our country, this election must be about bringing our people together, not dividing us up,” Sanders said. “While Donald Trump is busy insulting Mexicans, Muslims, women, African Americans and veterans, Hillary Clinton understands that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths.” nn

House Democrats hold vigil for Orlando victims, LGBT rights

WASHINGTON (AP) - Dozens of Democratic lawmakers are holding a vigil on the House steps to commemorate the one-month anniversary of the murders of 49 patrons of a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. They took turns addressing a small gathering of onlookers with pleas for equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, new laws to limit sales of assault weapons, and other gun control measures. Some lawmakers noted that Tuesday’s vigil came as the Republican Party added measures to its platform in opposition to same-sex marriage and other items seen as against LGBT rights. Most of the Democratic lawmakers held poster-sized photographs of victims of the Orlando massacre, many of whom were Hispanic. nn

Ban assault weapons: Petition signed by 1.2 million demands

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On the one-month anniversary of the massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando and just days after the horrific tragedy in Dallas, today people who lost loved ones in Orlando, gun owners, LGBTQ advocates, and gun violence prevention activists joined together to deliver 1,201,758 signatures to members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, demanding that Congress ban sales of assault weapons and regulate those in circulation. The assault weapon ban expired in September 2004. nn

WOMEN’S MIXER DRAWING GREAT ATTENDANCE WILTON MANORS--For the past two months, Thirteen on Wilton Drive in Fort Lauderdale has been hosting a Women’s Mixer once a month on Tuesday nights. The crowd is diverse in age, ethnicity, type and relationship status. Over 80 lovely women clinked glasses and enjoyed the newest meetup on the block this past Tuesday. Upon entry, name tags are handed out with a question of the night. On Tuesday, the question was “who was your first crush?” This lead to discussions about Kristy McNichol, Joan Jett, Lady Gaga, and Aubrey Plaza. What an effective way to break the ice and expand your circle! Most of the crowd was interested in how to help each other. Recruiting, selling, flirting, connecting, informing, all in the name of good networking. The Women’s Mixer is a fun, positive, feel good, after work event that you won’t feel odd coming to alone or with some pals. The next Women’s Mixer will be held Tuesday August 9th at Thirteen on Wilton Drive in Fort Lauderdale 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm.

Log Cabin Republicans “Mad as Hell” over Party Platform

“There’s no way to sugar-coat this: I’m mad as hell — and I know you are, too,” Gregory T. Angelo, president of the Log Cabin Republicans announced last week in response to the official platform of the Republican Party. It was a platform that Angelo labeled as the most anti-LGBT Platform in the Party’s 162-year history. “Opposition to marriage equality, nonsense about bathrooms, an endorsement of the debunked psychological practice of “pray the gay away” — it’s all in there,” he said. “This isn’t my GOP, and I know it’s not yours either. Heck, it’s not even Donald Trump’s! When given a chance to follow the lead of our presumptive presidential nominee and reach out to the LGBT community in the wake of the awful terrorist massacre in Orlando on the gay nightclub Pulse, the Platform Committee said NO.” nn Assembled through Associated Press

LITTLE ROCK, AR (AP) - Arkansas lawmakers gave final approval Tuesday to a rule allowing counselors to refer clients to another provider if they have a religious objection to treating them, a move critics say opens the door for discrimination against gays and lesbians. The rule will allow counselors and therapists to refer a patient to someone else over sincerely held “ethical, moral or religious principles” but only after careful consideration and consultation, and only if the counselor is unable to effectively serve the client. It also says counselors cannot abandon someone who seeks assistance. It was proposed by the Board of Examiners in Counseling, which regulates 2,800 counselors and marriage and family therapists in the state. nn

Four other lawsuits, including a challenge by the Justice Department, are being heard by a judge in another federal court. nn

MOSCOW (AP) - An American pastor who supports LGBT rights has been detained in Russia and ordered to leave the country. Citing his lawyer, the Tass state news agency reported Sunday that 72-year-old pastor Jim Mulcahy of the Metropolitan Community Church has been fined the equivalent of $30 and given five days to leave Russia. The Russian LGBT Network, a non-governmental organization, said in a Facebook post that Mulcahy was detained Saturday in an LGBT community center in the Volga River city of Samara. His lawyer, Karina Artyunyan, told Tass a city court ruled that Mulcahy had violated the terms of his tourist visa by engaging in religious activities. nn July 14, 2016

POTENTIAL HIV CURE: New patented technology removes virus from animals BY RICHARD HACK

n

PHILADELPHIA— Researchers at Temple University have confirmed that their latest research on HIV has managed to remove DNA of the HIV virus from living tissue for the first time in a breakthrough that could lead to an outright cure. In 2014 editions of the Florida Agenda, we reported that school researchers, lead by Temple University professor Kamel Khalili, PhD, were working on removing the HIV virus from the cells of rats. At that time, it was discovered that their novel gene editing system had the extraor-

10

July 14, 2016

dinary ability to eliminate HIV-1 from infected cells with no adverse effect on the host cells. Those test tube in vivo experiments using clinical specimens, including T-cells from patients infected with HIV that were expanded in culture, showed that viral replication was significantly reduced following treatment with the gene editing system. Last April, in the medical journal Gene Therapy, the team reported that they had successfully completely removed HIV from several organs of infected rats and mice. Now the Florida Agenda has

learned that the same researchers have used gene-editing technology to remove the virus from live animals. According to Khalili, the director of the college’s Center for Neurovirology Department, “In a proof-of-concept study, we show[ed] that our gene-editing technology can be effectively delivered to many organs of two small animal models and excise large fragments of viral DNA from the host cell genome.” Current treatment for HIV infection is centered on the use of a cocktail of antiretroviral drugs. And while these drugs have

allowed HIV to be a manageable disease, the drugs are only capable of suppressing the virus’ ability to replicate, and do not destroy it completely. Unfortunately, when antiretroviral therapy is interrupted, HIV replication rebounds, placing patients at risk for developing acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or full-blown AIDS. Such latent infections develop because HIV DNA is able to persist in the genomes of CD4+ memory T-cells and perhaps in other cellular reservoirs where the virus remains silent and is unaffected by current therapy.

Within two weeks had managed to completely eliminate the virus in every tissue, including the brain, heart, kidney, liver, lungs, spleen, and blood cells.

In the latest studies, the edited gene of the HIV DNA was introduced into living rats and mice, and within two weeks had managed to completely eliminate the virus in every tissue, including the brain, heart, kidney, liver, lungs, spleen, and blood cells. “The ability of the delivery system to enter many organs containing the HIV-1 genome and edit the viral DNA is an important indication that this strategy can also overcome viral reactivation from latently infected cells and potentially serve as a curative approach for patients with HIV,” said Dr.

Khalili. The study, which was performed on the most common form of the HIV-1 virus eliminates any chance for the development of replication-competent virus or escape events. The clinical implications of the new study are far-reaching. The gene editing platform is likely not only capable of eradicated HIV-1 DNA from patients, but it is also highly flexible and potentially could be used in combination with existing antiretroviral drugs to further suppress viral RNA. It also could be adapted to target mutated strains of HIV-1. Clinical trial on humans are projected to occur within the next several years. In the meantime, Dr. Khalili will conduct followup studies in a larger group of animals, in which the researchers plan to monitor for effects of the treatment, its safety, and other important indices. Other researchers contributing to the study include Rafal Kaminski, Chaoran Yin, Jessica Otte,Jennifer Gordon, and Wenhui Hu, Department of Neuroscience, Center for Neurovirology, Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University; Ramona Bella and Pasquale Ferrante, Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology, Department of Biomedical, Surgical and Dental Sciences, University of Milan, Milan, Italy; Howard E. Gendelman, Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience, University of Nebraska Medical Center; and Hailong Li and Rosemarie Booze, Behavioral Neuroscience, Department of Psychology, University of South Carolina. Full disclosure: Drs. Khalili, Hu, and Kaminski hold the patents that cover the viral gene editing technology. Dr. Khalili is a co-founder, board member, scientific advisor, and holds equity in Excision Biotherapeutics, a biotech start-up which has licensed the viral gene editing technology from Temple University for commercial development and clinical trials. nn

The Circus Known as the Republican National Convention

n

The circus known as the Republican National Convention begins this week. We say circus not to minimize its importance in the overall political structure of America. We are not even speaking about the circus that is Donald Trump who has been called a “vulgar, demented, pig demon” by some of his closest friends. The circus to which we refer begins right along with the Republican Convention on Monday July 18 through BY Thursday RICHARD July 21, and it will be HACK unfolding on the streets of Cleveland, Ohio. In case you haven’t been looking at the statistics, Cleveland is one of the most unsafe cities in the nation, landing in the bottom two percent, right along with Detroit, where violent crime rates are concerned. Political conventions are always magnets for protests. This particular year and this particular convention, the security concerns are enormous—and justifiably frightening. According to the city’s police department, working in conjunction with the FBI, there are dozens of groups which have officially registered as protesters at the convention. There are expected to be an equal amount that just show up, or are lone wolves with madness in their minds. 12

July 14, 2016

Despite the fact that the city has an official “protest route” for the rebel rousers to take and a park for them to assemble, there will be outbreaks of violence as 50,000 people descend into a town best known for its hospitals—the Cleveland Clinic among them. Throughout the primaries, Trump’s campaign has deliberately agitated vast segments of the population with racial remarks against blacks and Latinos. He has made no secret that he is a religious bigot against Muslims. And his anti-gay LGBT comments are growing more intense as the days tick down to the convention itself. Recent events involving the shootings of blacks by police as well as the deadly ambush and killing of five officers in Dallas last week have heightened tensions. Add to this mix, Ohio’s open-carry gun laws, and you have a recipe for wholesale violence. Making matters worse, Ohio’s open-carry gun laws have the head of “Bikers for Trump” telling CNN that Cleveland’s streets could turn into “the O.K. Corral.” The open-carry gun laws in the state make it legal for anyone over 18 to carry a handgun in the state (unless they are a felon). Ohio is a right to carry state, which means that anyone who enters the 1.7 square mile event zone surrounding the convention center can legally possess and display a gun. What they cannot have is a sword, a hatchet, an ax, a slingshot, a BB gun, a pellet gun and/or brass knuckles. A .450 Magnum on the other hand is allowed. So too are

semi-automatic assault weapons. As if that weren’t bad enough, the Cleveland Police Department has previously been found guilty of using excessive violence in the protection of its citizens. According to a 2014 report from the Department of Justice, “We have determined that structural and systemic deficiencies and practices—including insufficient accountability, inadequate training, ineffective policies, and inadequate engagement with the community—contribute to the use of unreasonable force.” Officially, the police department is saying nothing about any special efforts being taken to protect the delegates and politicians, as well as the protestors and agitators during the convention. It is known that the police have ordered millions of dollars in body armor and tactical weaponry. The police department has 1,400 active members, but has recruited police from surrounding cities to join the patrols during

the convention, hoping to have 4,000 uniformed men and women on active duty. According to CNN, Amnesty International USA announced it would be sending “human rights observers” to both Cleveland and Philadelphia, which will host the Democratic convention from July 25-28. “Given the inevitable demonstrations at each and the uptick we’ve seen in excessive force at protests recently, AIUSA felt it was crucial that we have folks on the ground,” the group said in a statement. Of the $50 million in Federal grant money allotted for security at the convention, nearly half went to order batons and protective suits. And all this for Donald Trump, who claims to be the “Law and Order Candidate.” Richard Hack is the award-winning author of 26 books, and the Vice President of Content for Multimedia Platforms’ publications.

This particular year and this particular convention, the security concerns are enormous—and justifiably frightening.”

Bandwagon Or Real Deal?

n

THE DATE: SUNDAY, JUNE 19, 2016. THE PLACE: WILTON DRIVE.

A street adorned with rainbow flags. Windows of many shops had rainbow ribbons that said “Love Wins! We Stand With Orlando” or similar signs and phrases. We were proud to be LGBTQI, we were proud to let Orlando know they were in our minds and hearts. Within a few days of the festival, there were few, if any, rainbow flags to be seen. Many of the Orlando signs were gone as well. It hasn’t gone unnoticed. I’ve had quite a few people comment to me regarding the void of rainbow. One even asked if the city is truly LGBTQI more than one or By Rev. two days a year. “We’re supposed to be the ‘gay Joel mecca.’ Other than a rainSlotnick bow flag or two, how would you know?” The streets were filled with them a few short week ago. The same thing coming together remembering the lives taken at Pulse Nightclub. Aside from the Monday night peaceful protests on Oakland and Federal, Orlando seems to have quieted down here. There’s one rainbow flag across from Wilton Manors City Hall. Yes, it was momentous for many to get it there, but if you aren’t from or familiar with the area, what really stands out to let you know the LGBTQI are really welcome? In my hometown of Chicago, it’s clear. Those of you who are from or have been there, you know what I mean. Since 1998, Halsted Street in the “Boystown” area of Chicago has 20-foot bronze pylons with rainbow rings adorning the street.

THE DATE: 7/5/16: ALTON STERLING IN BATON ROUGE WAS KILLED BY POLICE. THE DATE: 7/6/16: PHILANDO CASTILE IN FALCON HEIGHTS, MINNESOTA, WAS KILLED BY POLICE.

THE DATE: 7/7/16: FIVE POLICE OFFICERS IN DALLAS, TEXAS: OFFICERS BRENT THOMPSON, MICHAEL KROL, PATRICK ZAMARRIPA, SGT. MICHAEL SMITH AND SENIOR CORPORAL LORNE AHRENS WERE GUNNED DOWN BY A SNIPER. As it does in times of crisis, the nation has come forward to show its solidarity on both sides of the spectrum. Two men whose lives were taken within hours by just being who they are. And, then, just hours after the last shooting, five lives whose lives were taken by just being who they are. People have protested and marched to speak out against racism which reminds us it is very much alive. The color of their skin caused them their lives. So, what do these two very different items have to do with one another? Easy. There are those who jump on the bandwagon. For a short period of time, they get caught up in the hype of the moment, whether it be for a one or two day pride event, or the showing of solidarity when there is an injustice of some kind. There are those who are the real deal; those who won’t stop because the events have. They are the people who continue to hang their rainbow flags or signs every day, long after June ended. They are the people who continue fighting causes to end hate and bigotry, the killings of another because of their skin color, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation long after the press has taken a story from page 1, then put it way back on page 50, and then eventually nonexistent. They’re the ones who continue to fight no matter what. Our world is for-

ever changing. We can’t afford to jump on a bandwagon for a short period of time. Nobody listens. However, we need and must become the real deal; not for today; not for tomorrow, but for always. If the people of yesterday only jumped on the bandwagon, we wouldn’t have come this far. Eric Betzig says it best: “The real deal is always going to win in the end.” ** Columnist note: A year ago, I was asked if I would write a monthly opinion in the Florida Agenda by Peter Jackson, then newly named president and group executive publisher. Twelve months later, I am privileged to be able to contribute a bi-weekly column. I want to not only thank Peter, but a big thank you to Bobby Blair, Richard Hack and Maura Lane for allowing me to continue to say what I want, without stipulation, always with their support and confidence in me . POSITIVE THOUGHTS

Changes n

This past January I awoke to the news that David Bowie had just died. My partner Stephen told me as I walked into the kitchen. I thought it had to be a mistake, some kind of horrible, twisted hoax. When you are 57 years old, as I am, 69 seems way too young to die.

treatments did finally arrive they were often difficult to take, and some had debilitating side effects. While recent treatment advances have made HIV therapy much simpler and safer, there can often be underlying issues such as mental health, substance abuse and financial instability that need to be addressed in order to be

Treating and preventing HIV is as much an art as it is a science. Change is inevitable. When I graduated from high school in 1976, my parents gave me an all-in-one stereo system that I would play my vinyl records on (it even had a built in 8-track player!). I would listen to Bowie’s album “Young Americans” over and over on the turntable, and was spellbound by Bowie – his music, lyrics, the androgynous look. Everything about him spoke to me, and as a slightly effeminate, young, gay man who was still in the process of coming out, he gave me confidence that everything was going to work out, and that I would eventually come into my own someday. He gave me, and others like me, hope, and made it cool to be different. After testing positive for HIV in 1989 at the age of 30, I wasn’t sure I would live to see 35, as there were still no effective treatments for HIV. When those 14

successful in treating HIV. Take it upon yourself to create your own plan and path to wellness. If you’re depressed or feel isolated, talk to someone at a support group or even an online community (there are many on Facebook such as the “International place for people with HIV/ AIDS, and the people who love us” or “HIV Long Term Survivors”). If you are using, there are resources to help you get and stay sober (AA, NA or CMA) or at the very least play safely and sanely (such as tweaker. org). If you’re HIV-positive, seek out an HIV case manager at the nearest AIDS service organization in your area who can help you see if there are financial resources available to you to help ease some of the stresses of day-to-day living. Consult with a provider who is knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS, and come

prepared with a list of questions about potential side effects and drug interactions that you might be concerned about. If you want to simplify your treatment or help make it easier for you to take it every day as prescribed, see if there is something available that will work for you. If you are HIV-negative, PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a daily pill you can take to prevent HIV. Truvada is currently the only approved medication for PrEP. While any doctor can prescribe PrEP, you can find a list of providers who are knowledgeable and familiar with PrEP at http:// www.greaterthan.org/get-prep. If you are HIV-positive, and are on effective HIV treatment, your virus will be suppressed to a level so low (undetectable) that it is virtually impossible for you to transmit the virus to others. Much has changed in 20 years:

the dawn of the internet, smart phones, social media, even treatment and prevention for HIV. But one constant remains. Treating and preventing HIV is as much an art as it is a science. Change is inevitable, but by embracing it we “turn and face the strange,” as Bowie said, and become the architect of our own future, and master of our destiny. nn

Pulse is already weakening. People are starting to forget. So it goes with the one-hit-wonder-focused media cycle. Not for all of us of course. (See the new WiRLD site --UnitewithOrlando.com -- for example.) We remain outraged, and, at this stage it is hard to know whether it’s directed more at the Orlando mass shootings or at the predictable inaction by our elected officials. There have already been more shootings, mass and otherwise. There will continue to be. After the tweets and the vigils; the Senate filibuster and the House sitin; after the House debated BY “counterLINDA terrorism” PENTZ instead of gun control; after #OrlandoStrong and the editorials; it is easy to be left with a sense of helplessness. “The time for silence is over,” Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) bellowed during that wonderful June 22 sit-in at the U.S. House of Representatives. You could hear the exasperation in the cadences of the 76-year old lawmaker’s oratory. It is the same urgency we’ve heard from him when speaking about LGBT rights, or black rights. We should be there

16

July 14, 2016

by now. But how to get there? A recent “After Pulse” gathering at Busboys and Poets on K Street in DC was intended to find some answers and identify next steps. A straight ally seated next to me said she had come to the event specifically to learn what she could do to help. Speakers ran the gamut from trans activists to gun control advocates to LGBT psychotherapists. Absent a moderator, the presentations meandered from topic to topic. There were monologues and even sermons. Code Pink tagged its upcoming vigil outside the National Rifle Association. But in the end, even in this room full of people who care passionately about gun control and the LGBT community, it was hard to find answers. Why is gun control legislation such a high mountain to climb? Sadly, that’s one question that is all too easy to answer. The NRA has donated $3,781,803 to members of Congress who are currently in office, according to the Washington Post. Top of the charts is Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) with a whopping $60,550, closely followed by Rep. Don Young (R-AK) with $55,650, Rep. Steve Chabot (ROH) with $54,100 and Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) at $51,650. “Guns make hate legal,” observed Christian Heyne of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, during the Busboys event. And lobbying money makes guns

legal. And fear makes guns appealing, as gun sales in Orlando and elsewhere post-Pulse are reflecting. But it’s a bigger problem than just guns, as British satirist Jonathan Pie (real name Tom Walker and if you’ve never watched him, you’ve missed out) so brilliantly pointed out in a recent post-Orlando diatribical monologue. “How do you change a mindset that is around the globe that says gay people do not have the right to live in peace?” Pie asked. “How do you begin to challenge an ideology that says someone’s natural instinct is inherently shameful? More guns? I don’t think so.” And so we have to keep talking about this. Even if the mainstream media moves on and forgets. Because there will be more editorials like the one in the June 13 Asbury Park Press that asked: “How many people must be killed before Congress can agree to ban assault weapons? How many must die before our legislators decide that universal background checks would be a good idea?” Check the NRA donations list. Check it twice. There’s your answer. nn

FYI

I’M JUST SAYIN’

Guns in the USA It’s tough to know exactly how many guns we have in the United States. Most estimates of the number of guns in the U.S. use federal tallies of the firearms manufactured, imported and exported by U.S. gun makers. A 2013 Congressional Research Service report published, the number of civilian firearms at 242 million in 1996, 259 million in 2000, and 310 million as of 2009. If that 310 million number is correct, it means that the number of firearms in circulation surpassed the total U.S. population. Adding up new guns and imports and subtracting gun exports, in 2013 there would have been roughly 357 million firearms in the U.S. — 40 million more guns than people. This is just an estimate. These numbers are blind to firearms that enter and exit the country illegally, and to guns that are lost or destroyed. It’s important to note that even as the number of guns has increased since the early-to-mid90s, the per-capita gun homicide rate has fallen by nearly half over the same time period. On the other hand, it’s also true that when you make comparisons between states, you see that places with more guns have more gun homicides. These two seemingly irreconcilable facts form the basis of the contemporary gun policy debate. Compounding the difficulty is that now, after years of highprofile killing sprees and vitriolic public debates, each side is deeply skeptical that the other is acting in good faith. Even modest policy proposals, like expanded background checks supported by many members of the National Rifle Association, fail to make it through Congress. Is there a way to reconcile these divisions? It’s hard to tell. nn-Kevin Broady

CREEP OF THE WEEK

Pat McCrory BY D’ANNE WITOWSKI

n

Remember when FEMA put all of those people in North Carolina in trailers after the streets were flooded with the pee of transgender men and women who weren’t allowed to use public restrooms? No? Huh, me neither. I guess North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory gets a different version of the FEMA newsletter. One an aide is apparently typing up and handing out just to fuck with him. In a move that only the most hateful and ignorant people will applaud, McCrory asked that $500,000 be taken from the state’s disaster relief fund in order to help pay for the state’s lawsuit supporting HB2, the anti-LGBT bill that has been taking the state by storm. Figuratively. Although now that state disaster money is being pissed away in order to fight for the right to discriminate, “taking the state by storm” could take on a literal meaning as well. There’s a whole heap of suing going on in North Carolina. First, the Department of Justice is suing the state over HB2 because it violates the civil rights act. But North Carolina didn’t like that much and decided it would sue the federal government right back. North Carolina’s Attor18

July 14, 2016

ney General is Roy Cooper, a Democrat who is hoping to become the state’s next governor. He has refused to defend HB2 because it’s “some bullshit.” OK, he didn’t really say that. But he did call it a “national embarrassment,” which is pretty much the same thing. And since Cooper won’t defend the law, McCrory has hired outside lawyers to do it and outside lawyers don’t come for free. Or for cheap. Hence the half a million dollars being pilfered from a fund that helps pay for silly things like “relief” from “disaster.” Surely not something the fine people of North Carolina are worried about. It’s not like their state is vulnerable to flooding or hurricanes or tornadoes. And it’s not like the entire state shuts the fuck down if snow sticks to the ground. So I’m sure everything will be fine. HB2 is priority #1, obviously, come Hell or high water. Not even economic catastrophe has been enough to sway Republican lawmakers that a bill specifically designed to discriminate against LGBT people, even going so far as to limit the public restroom use of transgender men and women, was maybe a bad idea. Google, PayPal and now

the NBA have pulled or are threatening to pull investments in the state. The 2017 All Star Game is scheduled to take place in Charlotte and the NBA has already said that if HB2 doesn’t change drastically or disappear by the end of the summer, they’ll take their balls and go elsewhere. Lawmakers have made some very minor changes to the law, but nothing that makes it much better for LGBT people. And the NBA has called foul. “We have been engaged in dialogue with numerous groups at the city and state levels, but we do not endorse the version of the bill that we understand is currently before the legislature,” the NBA and the Charlotte Hornets said in a joint statement. “We remain committed to our guiding principles of inclusion, mutual respect and equal protections for all. We continue to believe that constructive engagement with all sides is the right path forward. There has been no new decision made regarding the 2017 NBA All-Star Game.” In other words, the ball is back in McCrory’s court. But it remains to be seen whether he will continue to be obsessed with the balls that are or aren’t in some of his constituent’s pants. nn

OPINION

WHO IS?

Willing to Play Ball The 2017 NBA All-Star Game is an exhibition basketball game that will be played on Sunday, February 19, 2017 and will be the 66th edition of the event. It is planned to be held at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, home of the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets were awarded the All-Star Game in an announcement on June 22, 2015. If the game remains in Charlotte, it will be the second time that Charlotte will have hosted the All-Star game; the city previously hosted the event in 1991 at the now-demolished Charlotte Coliseum. Talks about the NBA pulling the game from Charlotte began rising due to HB2. On June 2, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver met with reporters to discuss the future of the All-Star Game, stating the league was “looking at alternatives”, however he went on to say “...it would not be productive to draw a line in the sand, and we’d be moving on if I didn’t think there were constructive discussions going on in North Carolina right now”. However, he also made clear the game would move if HB2 wasn’t changed. nn –Kevin Broady

THE SECRET RECIPE

CAVIAR PIE

I

f you are having a cocktail party and want to jazz it up a bit, this is one of the appetizers I like to serve. It seems way more complicated (and pricey) than it is, but it looks great, and tastes even better. Directions: Take 6 extra-large hard boiled eggs, chop them and mix with mayo to make a dryish, somewhat under-salted egg salad. Spoon into a 9” spring pan. Layer chopped shallots (to taste, but remember you don’t want the shallots to “overwhelm” the dish.) Take 2/3 cup of sour cream and mix well with an 8 ounce block of softened cream cheese. Spoon this mixture, dropping little gobs of it all over the pie, then gently spreading it, over the shallots. Chill for a minimum of twelve hours, then spread two jars of caviar (American sturgeon; salmon roe, for a red pie; paddlefish roe for a grayish pie or hackle fish roe for a glossy black pie) gently over the top, strain-

ing out as much as you can of the milkytextured liquid. Gently open and lift off the spring pan. For dramatic show-off effect, put a colorful flower in the center. Serve with small toasted black bread triangles.

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION, CLEVELAND, OHIO

Is Anyone Speaking Besides Don King?

n

That’s the question being asked as mystery swirls around the chaos created by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. As conservative Republicans push each other aside in an effort to distance themselves from the drama of a convention that has almost nothing to do with actual Republicans and everything to do with the vulgarity of their candidate, we’ve patched together some bits and pieces of info about the actual schedule of events—such as they are.

MONDAY, JULY 18 1 PM

WEDNESDAY JULY 20 7 P.M.

If all goes well, the Republican Convention will open today in Cleveland, with Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton expected to speak to delegates on opening night. Cotton, you’ll remember, is the junior Senator from Arkansas, who once told gays in America that they should feel fortunate that they don’t live in Iraq where they would be executed on sight. Cotton is supposed to be speaking about veterans and the military. Cotton served in the Army and had deployments in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.

This is the time when Trump’s vice presidential running mate will be revealed. The most talked about possibilities include Indiana Governor Mike Pence, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, retired Lieutenant General Michael Flynn, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and Oklahoma Mary Fallin. The big money says that Pence has the job. We’ll see.

TUESDAY, JULY 19 5:30 PM This evening is the moment when Donald Trump’s name will officially be placed in nomination for the President of the United States. There will be more Arkansas on display as its Governor Asa Hutchinson is scheduled to speak.

THURSDAY, JULY 21 This is the night that the big cheese, Donald Trump himself, will speak. Others who are supposed to be given an opportunity at the microphone are Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky (who is a delegate), Trump’s one-time competitor Ted Cruz (who once said, “For 40 years, Donald has been part of the corruption you’re angry about”), and House Speaker Paul Ryan who has been very outspoken about his distrust of The Donald. Also expected to speak at Trump’s sons, Eric and Donald Jr., his daughter Ivanka, his current wife Melania, as well as Wisconsin Goveror Scott Walker, Iowa Senator Joni Ernst, Tennessee Rep. Marsha Blackburn, and Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette.

lovers. Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda are opposites in this heart-warming sitcom style series. Lily (Frankie) is a tie-dye clothed artist with a flair for getting into jams, and Jane (Grace) is a starched shirt martini swilling perfectionist. Their relationship fosters change and understanding as they toil through finding romance, being valued and dealing with vices. The series also explores the chal-

lenges of coming out in your 70s as the husbands Sol (Sam Waterson) and Robert (Martin Sheen) discover. Hiding the romance 20 years sounds easy when now faced with challenges of homes, and children and friends. Season 1 episode one will have you wonder why it is recommended, but hang in there, character development takes time.

PET BOOK REVIEW

Woof! Woof!

WHY DOGS LOVE GAY MEN

SPOILED PUP IN A BED

The Secret Life of Pets premiered this past weekend as a box office hit generating $145 million worldwide. And of that group, a good half were likely gay. You see, we LGBTs are major pet owners--some 70 percent of us have them in our homes. We are, however, not your typical pet owners. Just ask Andrew DePrisco, author of Woof! A Gay Man’s Guide to Dogs (Bow Tie Press, amazon.com, $16.95).

32

July 14, 2016

T

his is the book that Joan Rivers called “my dog bible.” Woof! is the quintessential queer guide for dog lovers, offering a hilarious take on gay dog ownership unlike any other book out there! Author Andrew De Prisco and illustrator Jason O’Malley have created a LGBTQ classic that defines the 28 “breeds” of gay men and recommends which breeds are best for each. From Drag Queen and All-American Boy to Twink, Leatherman, and Log Cabin Queer, every gay man will find advice and hilarity on every page of this award-winning gift book. (For gay men who are not sure of their breed, there is a temperament sorter to help determine their homo DNA.) In addition to being a breed-selection guide for the dog-loving Q-set, Woof! provides no-nonsense information about how to purchase a dog from a breeder, bringing the puppy home, training, caring, and feeding for the dog. It also offers tongue-in-cheek pointers along the lines of choosing the best gay name for the puppy, shopping for extravagant accessories, throwing a gay puppy shower (for the gifts!), hiring the right staff to take care of the puppy, and using the well-cared-for dog as a man magnet. DePrisco, who has been actively involved in the dog (and gay world) for over two decades, has tapped all his doggy resources to bring readers the most fabulous advice from some of the nation’s Top Dog Men, including breeders of Westminster Best in Show winners, world-revered judges, and international canine experts. The chapter “Studs and Bitches: The Secret Sex Lives of Dogs” addresses hot topics such as homosexual dogs, promiscuity in the dog world, and getting unleashed and hooking up at dog parks. In the book’s final chapter, “The Rainbow Tour: Stepping Out in Gay Society,” the author throws a virtual pride parade of doggy activities, from the über-queer world of dog shows to vacations, gay resorts, and camping (with actual tents!). The true message of the book—beyond the campy humor, wildly funny illustrations, and off-color remarks— rings out from every page: Woof! is for everyone who wants to be the most responsible and devoted dog owners on the planet.

ENTERTAINMENT HERE ARE SOME OF THOUGHTS, DIRECTLY FROM THE AUTHOR’S MIND. “Dogs welcome any chance to be outdoors with a group of half-dressed homosexuals, whether it’s for a gay pride parade, a Lady Gaga concert, or a Log Cabin convention in the Ozarks,” says the charming author, who counts Joan Rivers and Carson Kressley among his book’s many fans. As it turns out, there are a few key factors making dogs grateful for its gay owners. Following are just three: 1) The gay ‘family’ dog usually doesn’t have to play second fiddle to two-legged children. 2) Dogs are, by nature, greedy. They don’t like to share their meals, their toys, or their owners (men). Gay men are essentially just as greedy, though we will share our toys with men if they buy us a meal first.

LADY OF LEISURE

3) Dogs love to be the spoiled ‘kids’ of a gay couple — two incomes and all the toys, clothes and nylon bones that money can buy. What’s the biggest difference between gay dog lovers and straight ones? “Regardless of sexual orientation, any sensible, responsible person can make a great dog owner,” DePrisco is quick to point out. “There are wonderful gay and straight dog owners out there. When a sensible, responsible gay man commits to a dog, the dog becomes his family, his kid, and a truly important part of his world.” When breeders, rescuers, or shelter-dog adoption counselors see a potential dog owner/adopter who is gay, they tend to jump for joy, figuring that the dog will enjoy a great, pampered life. Is there truth in this stereotype? “Truth exists in all stereo-

THE BREEDER

types, even the positive ones like this one,” DePrisco says. “Yes, gay men tend to spoil their dogs, treating them like true family and giving them high priority. For lots of gay men, dogs exist as substitutes for lovers, children, close family, and maybe even good friends. Unlike most of our lovers, dogs truly enjoy being used and don’t panic when they decide that you’re devoting too much time to them. Dogs believe in commitment and are defined by their loyalty. Secretly, most gay men want to be like dogs, even when they’re standing.” Acceptance, tolerance, unconditional love, these are things dogs give everybody, but gay people haven’t always been the beneficiaries of such gifts from their fellow humans. Are gays especially GYM CUTIES appreciative of that canine love — more, perhaps, than someone who’s never experienced intolerance or prejudice? Gay men have a lot to learn from dog love. Dogs are not judgmental — they will sleep with you any night you come home, even if they smell a raunchy Poodle on your breath. Dogs accept

you for who you are. They don’t care whether you sleep with men, women, or stray cats. In fact, they’d prefer you share your bone with everyone as long as they’re not left out in the cold. Many gay men feel a disconnect with their own families. Dogs live to connect, and the unconditional love a dog offers when he raises a paw or rubs his nose in his new owner’s crotch may be the first true moment of family a gay man experiences. A dog can really make a person feel like he’s come home, especially if he’s bearing a bag of groceries or a smelly pepperoni pizza. “Dogs love to be used, as companions, playmates, bedmates, pets, and accessories! As long as they are loved and properly cared for, they will bloom into wonderful, happy dogs. Unlike gay men, dogs are fairly indiscriminate about the details of their lifestyle. They’d just as happily dwell in a $90 million penthouse on the Upper East Side as they would in a double-wide in Dollywood.” DePrisco says. One of the wonderful takeaways of Woof! is the idea that commitment doesn’t have to hurt — anybody. Is a gay man quicker to give his whole heart to a dog? “I don’t see gayness having much to do with how open you are to giving of your heart or yourself,” the author says. “I know plenty of gay men who wouldn’t expend the energy to water a Christmas cactus, much less care for a needy, four-legged animal. But I think it’s fair to say that most gay dog owners are equally, if not more, as devoted to their canine companions as our straight counterparts. All of which brings us back to why the movie The Secret Life

HOWLING SHOWTUNES

of Pets is so successful? Just maybe it’s because we LGBTs are unafraid of exaggeration, are moved by strong emotion and passion, and tend to go a wee bit over the top. And, of course, gay men who truly live for their dogs. We put them right up on the top of the list--above our partners, parents, and (yes, even) personal trainers. One might wonder if the things that happen in the movie, actually happen to us when we are away from our pets, and if a scene or two was actually inspired by this book. Either way, the movie is a must see and the book is a hilarious must read and the illustrations are works of art.

YOUR LIFE: AN OWNER’S MANUAL

Getting your life back on track

n

We all have ideas of our perfect life, the perfect job, partner, income etc. We begin life with grand ideas, but years later we don’t recognize the person we’ve become. We find that our sense of selffulfillment and overall happiness is low and our life feels unbalanced. The good news is, it’s never too late to get your life back on track. Working with many clients over the years, each has his own version of what By success James meansMiller -mainly found with financial freedom or material things. One thing I encourage them do is to develop multiple measurements of success. If they are only focused on one measurement, then after they achieve it, they realize their life is now unbalanced. This is often where you hear of the stereotypical mid-life crisis. The person is attempting to redefine himself with different things. When you can create these different success measurements now, in the end, your life will be fulfilled.

As you continue with your journey, you may find yourself compromising in small areas of your life. This slowly starts to divert you from your course. You lose focus of what your goals are and over time these small compromises turn into larger, radical decisions which lead you astray. It is important to analyze your life right now to see if you are making compromises in your actions as well as your thinking. If you are, it is vital to correct this now as opposed to years later when you are having feelings of regret. We often use distractions as a way of checking out from daily stressors. This is a good way to decompress if it is planned or a part of your routine. If using distractions becomes a lifestyle instead of a tool you use, then your priorities are skewed and you will find your life slowing down. Keep in mind, distractions can be many things such as tv, going out, dating certain people, clubbing, etc. A good rule of thumb is, if you are more interested in engaging in one of these distractions than working on your goals, then it is a good indication that your distraction is turning into a lifestyle. Feelings of defeat are easily accessible when we experience a setback. We suddenly lose momentum and find ourselves

struggling to find the right side up. We often lose focus and feel as if we will never reach our goals. This is a critical time to regroup. The longer you sit with these feelings, the more your goal is going to feel unattainable. This is where many people settle and only achieve a mediocre life. Sometimes we have to be our own cheerleader. Learning how to develop healthy selftalk during this time will bolster your confidence and help you redouble your efforts.

Regardless where you are in your stage of life, you can always reset, redirect and refocus. There is no decision you have made that can stop you from fulfilling your purpose. As long as you are willing to recommit yourself to find your fulfillment, you will be successful. Think of your life like a bank account. You can only withdraw what you deposit in to it. You get to determine what that is. Your life is only as limited as you want it to be. nn
