Obama To Name Stonewall 1st National Monument For Gay Rights

WASHINGTON (AP) - The iconic Stonewall Inn where the modern gay rights movement took root will become the first national monument honoring the history of gays and lesbians in the U.S. under a proposal that President Barack Obama is preparing to approve. Designating the small swath of land will mark a major act of national recognition for gay rights advocates and their struggles over the last half-century. The week reflected back through fabulously funny eyes

GAYDAR ALERT! I’m feeling such a gay vibe between those two dudes in a car in those “Sonic” fast food commercials. KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS. Why do they keep renewing this horrible show and making this terrible people richer???? SUSPENDED CAMPAIGN, BYE BYE FELICIA! Go home Ted Cruz you’re drunk! Girl bye. Throw a bucket of water on Carly! WHO’S THE BIGGEST LOSER? Although I know many people that find the show inspirational, Mother Nature still rules. Even maintaining a healthy lifestyle, a lot of these contestants found it hard to keep the weight off because the body is only programmed to such natural limits. Plus, it’s a common fact that a lot of these weight-loss measures were extremely drastic, some bordering on unhealthy. THERE IS ALWAYS A SILVER LINING! Uggghh...I’ve been in the human resources industry for over 10 years. So I should know better, but whenever I get a rejection letter, it still tears at my heartstrings. It’s ok, gives me an excuse to pout for a day and hide under the covers with a carb! OBAMA ROCKS!!! AND HE’S GOT JOKES! I love how all these diehard FOX News Republicans can’t even set aside their bigotry and hatred to laugh at the funny jokes that were told by Obama at the correspondents dinner. Meanwhile if they were so concerned about their future they wouldn’t have two absolute buffoons vying for the Republican ticket. SHOP UNTIL YOU DROP. So Evangelical Christians are boycotting Target? Thank God, a lot less ignorant people with three teeth, obese guts, and small minds. Shorter lines! ANCIENT CATWALK PROVERB. Always remember when life knocks you down, keep on strutting down the runway! ABSOUTLY FABULOUS. I’m so freakin’ excited for the movie coming this summer! Some of the best moments!

Random thoughts from social media and beyond this week

TED CRUZ IS SUSPENDING HIS PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN FOLLOWING A POOR SHOWING IN THE INDIANA PRIMARY, CRUZ SAID, “FROM THE BEGINNING, I HAVE SAID THAT I WILL CONTINUE ON AS LONG AS THERE IS A VIABLE PATH TO VICTORY. TONIGHT, I AM SORRY TO SAY, IT APPEARS THAT PATH HAS BEEN CLOSED.” NICK HAWK, a Las Vegas gigolo who insured his junk for a whopping $1 million said, “Fifty Shades screwed me. Most people are inexperienced [in bondage] and just getting into it, so they’re too rough and it hurts my penis. It also doesn’t help that I took on this “bad boy” image, so I decided to get the insurance. We called Lloyds of London first because they were the most well-known one for insuring celebrities’ body parts.”

Prince Harry arrived at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Tuesday afternoon. Many surprised passengers greeted him. He is in town to play a charity polo match being held at Valiente Polo Farm, in Wellington. Proceeds from the event will go toward Prince Harry’s charity, Sentebale, which raises money for HIV-positive children in Africa.

CEO of True Blue Media, Peter Daou comments, “Ted Cruz is out. Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee. Bernie Sanders owes it to America and to the world to immediately STOP any and all negative attacks against Hillary. The fate of the planet rests on Hillary’s shoulders now. And Bernie must set aside his personal goals and do what’s right for the common good. And he must do it now.

MIAMI BEACH RESIDENT DAVID RICHARDSON, “CONGRATULATIONS to the Miami-Dade County Commission for taking a stand against discrimination. A TRUMP-SCOTT TICKET:

“Tuberculosis picking leprosy as a running mate”

n

After this week’s stunning victory of Donald Trump in the Indiana primaries, talk on the street has morphed from who will be the presumptive Republican candidate into who will Trump announce as his vp running mate. The name at the top of almost everyone’s list, including The Donald’s, By is that of Florida Richard Governor Hack Rick Scott. Around this state, of course, Scott’s name in LGBT speak is a particularly nasty curse word. As minorities go, Donald Trump hasn’t been exceptionally harsh on gays and lesbians. Not that he’s been nice, but as his big mouth goes, it’s been rather pH balanced on the LGBT acidity scale. Considering that this is a man who takes particular pride in insulting entire religions, sexes, and countries, the fact that he has pasted little more than a sound-bite bandage on the LGBT issue during his nine months of campaigning is akin to a miracle of sorts. After all, he’s labeled all Mexicans as “rapists” and “drug May 05, 2016

8

dealers.” He’s said that every Muslim should be banned from entering the U.S., including those who are Americans. And he considers most women to be pigs, particularly those who have chosen journalism as a career. Yet, LGBTs have flown more or less under his radar, with the recent exception of same-sex marriage. You’ll remember that at one point Trump was willing to tolerate gay marriage and even attended one. Then he gave it some thought and now says it should be reconsidered by the courts—as in the Supreme Court, to which he would appoint justices specifically for that purpose. While Rick Scott has not made any obvious comments about Mexican or Muslims, he doesn’t think much about gays—or at least the ones in Florida. He has tried everything in his power as governor to keep them from having the ability to be legally married or adopt children. And it still bothers him that we actually now have the right to do both, after lengthy court battles that cost the state hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend. It’s just one of the reasons that Michael Mayo of the Sun Sentinel newspaper called the idea of a Trump-Scott ticket akin to “tuberculosis picking leprosy as a running mate.” Mayo correctly pointed to the fact that “Scott is one of the least popular sitting governors,

scoring 48 percent unfavorable (and 38 percent favorable) in a recent poll. Scott has won two terms, but failed to capture more than 50 percent of the vote in each election.” Compared to Trump, however, he’s the prom king. Trump is heading into the Republican presidential convention with the highest unfavorable ratings ever seen among a major presidential candidate--65 percent. The haters speak. LGBT advocate Michael Rajner told the Florida Agenda that “The prospect of a TrumpScott presidential ticket is frightening. Florida is already underwater as Governor Scott’s administration fails to tackle climate change and refuses to speak the words. Most recently, the Governor’s office directed the Department of Children and Families to strike any LGBT reference in a set of rules it is

considering relating to foster care. Trump and Scott are misguided to think building walls and making communities of people invisible will make America great again. Our diversity is what makes us a great nation,” Rajner said. Marc Paige, a speaker on HIV issues in schools across the nation, suggests, “The thought of Rick Scott being a heartbeat away from the presidency is just as frightening as Donald Trump in the Oval Office. Go Hillary!” There are 15 remaining primaries left for voters to elect the leading party candidates, with the highest delegate count in California on June 7. Richard Hack is the awardwinning author of 26 books, and the Vice President of Content for Multimedia Platforms’ publications.

The thought of Rick Scott being a heartbeat away from the presidency is just as frightening as Donald Trump in the Oval Office. Go Hillary!”

OPINION ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

Step Up

n

These past two weeks have been a shining examples in various forms of educating and entertaining others. Sometimes the only way to get a message out is to literally put it out there. Monday April 25th was Season 6 of Dancing with The South Florida Stars, held in the Epic Theatre at The Manor Complex. Ten couples competed to win the honor of first place. The evening was quite the variety of dance routines & styles proving everyone involved worked very hard. The couple who came in first place represented Rumors Bar. Proceeds support The WirldFoundation.org (formally The Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation). Additionally, this evening a few special people were honored. Our own photographer extraorBy Rev. dinaire, “Pompano Bill,” Joel was honored for “Making a Difference,” with a Slotnick beautiful award which looks like a globe, for his tremendous contribution to the world. Other recipients included Chuck Panozzo, who received the “Game Changer” award and Orlando’s Parlement House owners Don Granatstein and Susan Unger received the 2016 Florida Making a Difference Award. It was truly a fun and heartwarming night for all! Thursday April 28th, Broward House hosted Dining Out for Life 2016 (DOFL). In 1991, Dining Out for Life was created by an ActionAIDS volunteer in Philadelphia. Dining Out For Life is now produced in 60 cities throughout the United States and Canada. More than 3,000 restaurants donate a portion of their proceeds from this one special day of dining to the licensed AIDS service agency in their city. More than $4 million dollars a year is raised to support the missions of 60 outstanding HIV/AIDS service organizations throughout North America. With the exception of the annual licensing fee of $1,150, all money raised in these cities stays locally. This year, 18 different venues across Broward County participated by donating from 25% to 100% of their proceeds. Some of the

participants had multiple locations. It was my fourth year as an Ambassador. A great event with truly delicious food and drink all around! This is a great way to support a cause that hits home to so very many. If you are interested in being involved in DOLF 2017 or would like additional information, contact Broward House (954) 522-4749. Friday evening April 29th and Saturday April 30th, United Church of Christ Fort Lauderdale hosted the UCC State Wide Spring Gathering Conference. The subject of this year’s conference topic was “The Face of Human Trafficking: It’s Happening Here.” Defined by Department of Homeland Security “Human trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery involving the illegal trade of people for exploitation or commercial gain.” Sessions during this weekend included The Church’s Response to Human Trafficking, A Global Perspective on Human Trafficking, The Face of Sex Trafficking, The Face of LGBTQ Trafficking, The Face of Labor Trafficking and Perspectives on Trafficking in the Fields. This ever-growing subject was also in the spotlight when featured as the cover story in last week’s Florida Agenda in an informative article by Richard Hack. Aside from being a participant in one way or another at each of these events, I wanted to yet remind everyone again how so very, very important it is for all of us as individuals or businesses in our community it is to be involved. How to make a difference? In my opinion, you have to step up!

Yes, it can be costly. Giving (back) 25 to 100% of a day’s proceeds can have a big effect on the bottom line of small business. Even as a participant, sometimes it can take a toll on our wallets. In my opinion, you have to step up! Yes, there are a lot of life changing things in the world that not everyone may understand until it hits home, so we have to educate. In my opinion, you have to step up! Yes, it’s an obligation. There is not always a monetary value to it, only rewards of many kinds. If some of you didn’t do it, who would? I trust it will be YOU! In my opinion, you have to step up! I leave you with this: “Always assuming that someone else will step up to the plate to help will leave a lot of people feeling helpless.” - Unknown. nn Rev. Joel S. Slotnick is an ordained Interfaith minister and full time digital court reporter. He can be found on Facebook and followed on Twitter.

PAUL BERGE

Yes, it can be time consuming. Many times I have personally said there just isn’t enough hours in the day. If you’ve done it before, you know how taxing it can be to all involved to put oy an event of any kind together. In my opinion, You have to step up!

CAPITOL BEAT

THE LEGAL FIGHTBACK AGAINST THE INEVITABLE BACKLASH

n

In the first four months of 2016 there have been 200 anti-LGBT bills introduced in 34 states, according to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). It’s the not altogether unanticipated backlash to the landmark Supreme Court marriage equality decision last June. There were about 115 such bills in all of 2015, so bigotry is fast out of the gate this year. That’s the bad news. The good news is that only eight of those current bills have passed through their legislative bodies, and only five BY are already LINDA law — in PENTZ Missouri, Kansas, Tennessee and North Carolina. But it’s five too many. And there are still 53 bills up for consideration in 14 states. Consequently, campaigners for LGBT rights are by no means kicking their heels. With the North Carolina legislature back in session, activists are launching a full court press to get that state’s law rolled back in its entirety. The North Carolina NAACP held a rally at the state capitol on April 25 and a group

May 05, 2016

stopped at the governor’s office. And at the restroom. To illustrate not only the idiocy — but the unenforceability — of the law, trans activist Mara Keisling, who heads the National Center for Transgender Equality, used the ladies’ room without incident or arrest. But LGBT advocates face some powerful opposition. The HRC identified three groups as the movement’s primary — and extremely well-funded — adversaries. They are the Liberty Counsel, Alliance Defending Freedom and the Family Research Council. “The Liberty Counsel is claiming credit for bills in 20 states,” pointed out Sarah Warbelow, Legal Director at HRC on a recent phone interview with members. So who is funding the legislative backlash? The Liberty Counsel’s big backer is the Thirteen Foundation. It belongs to the Wilks brothers who are the Religious Right’s version of the Koch brothers. Why are we not surprised to learn their riches come from fracking? (In all fairness, not all of HRC’s corporate backers are to its members’ liking. They include Northrup Grumman, manufacturer of nuclear weapons, which is about as far from human rights as you can get. Another is Boeing, which HRC

members have decried for its production of drones.) Alliance Defending Freedom gets six figure donations from the National Christian Charitable Foundation, God’s Gift (although not directly from Him), and Chattanooga Christian Community Foundation. For activists eager to join the fight to kill the remaining antiLGBT bills in play, and repeal those that have passed, the HRC suggests members refer to the National Equality Action Team as a resource. But turning the tide will take more than repealing bad laws. “We’ve got to come out, over and over and over again,” said Lynne Bowman, Senior Regional Field Director at HRC. “It’s about telling our stories to folks,” she said. “It’s about sharing ‘this is what my life is like.’ So the closer a person gets to us, the more they understand our story, the less they have this irrational fear, and the more they are then able to influence people in their sphere.” nn

WHO IS NEAT? The National Equality Action Team, chaired by Freedom for All Americans, is a coalition of national, regional and local organizations as well as individual organizers who mobilize their equality supporters to volunteer for actions in support of equality and justice nationwide. These actions are done in coordination with, and with the support of the local campaigns and leadership. Our goal is to recruit more volunteers to take more actions (like phone calls or door knocks) to result that lead to more communities winning equality and justice across the country. In fall 2012, Marriage Equality USA (MEUSA) brought together 20 local, regional, and national organizations to support marriage campaigns in Maryland, Washington, Maine and Minnesota. Because of the success of this effort, the coalition was rebranded as NEAT and expanded to 50 plus organizations that continued to host phone banks (in person and remote) and canvass on weekends. When NEAT completed its last marriage action in 2014, the group had participated in 13 successful marriage campaigns (NJ, NH, MN, ME, MD, WA, MN, DE, RI, NJ, IL, IN, NM) and added over 100,000 phone calls to the totals of local campaigns. In 2015, NEAT supported its first non-marriage campaign in support of the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO), and in 2016, Freedom for All Americans – the national campaign to secure LGBT-inclusive non-discrimination protections nationwide – became the national chair of NEAT.

CREEP OF THE WEEK

Louie Gohmert BY D’ANNE WITOWSKI

n

Target. It’s kind of a weird name for a store. I mean, a target is something you shoot at. But say the word “target” anywhere in America and chances are people will think, “I need to buy some underwear, milk and a laundry basket” before they think “shooting range.” But now Target is the target of the anti-trans right because Target did something pretty radical. Something few companies have dared to do because it’s just so fringe, so wild, so unheard of. And no, it has nothing to do with Isaac Mizrahi. This time. On April 19, Target announced that it’s okay for people to use the restrooms at their store. I know! Can you even believe it? Can you even believe how totally mundane and uninteresting that should be? But, no. This nation’s unhealthy obsession with the potty habits of trans people or people who do not have a rigid gender identity has made such a statement revolutionary, apparently. “(W)e welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity,” Target said in an April 19 statement. “Given the specific questions these legislative May 05, 2016

16

proposals raised about how we manage our fitting rooms and restrooms, we felt it was important to state our position.” To which I say, “Bravo, Target! Now if you would just let your workers unionize I might love you instead of just liking you.” Other people, however, are FREAKING. Dumb people, but people nonetheless. And one of those dumbs is Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas. “I understand Target may now be changing their restrooms,” Gohmert said on the House floor on April 21 according to the Huffington Post. “If they’re going to be having women come into men’s restrooms, I won’t be going to Target to shop, unless and until that changes.” Uh, Target is not changing their restrooms, nor are women all of a sudden flocking to Target’s urinals (because urinals are very hard to sit on). But as I’ve said, Gohmert is not the brightest bulb in the House. After chiding folks for being so hard on North Carolina, Gohmert says, “It’s already been shown: you give guys a chance to say I’m transgender and I can get to go in and film a girl in a shower, there will be people that do that. Why not let the transgender LGBTQ, R, S, T, whatever the initials are,

let them have their activities where they don’t impose upon the privacy of someone who wants to go to the restroom or shower without someone of the opposite sex being there with them?” First of all, ha ha. Get it? LGBTQRST… Because there are so many weird letters! And who cares what they mean? Secondly, it has not already been shown that guys will fake being trans so they can go get nudie videos. That is not a thing. There are guys who are predators. And those guys are predators regardless of whether the law discriminates against trans people or not. To say that trans men and women are by definition sexual predators simply because they make you feel confused and uncomfortable is stupid and hateful. The crux of Gohmert’s complaint, and really the entire argument in favor of the bathroom police laws being proposed across the country, is who gets to define what a man or a woman is? Target thinks it should be up to the individual person. Gohmert thinks it should be him. Gohmert is totally going to delete his Cartwheel app as soon as he can find it on his flip phone. nn

Their newest hybrid performance is of Louisa May Alcott’s canonical novel Little Women. The plot follows the lives of March sisters Amy, Meg, Jo, and Beth as they navigate true love, scarlet fever, domesticity, and their personal desires during the American Civil War. 7:30 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

n THE HAMMER TRINITY

SUNDAY 5/08 @ 1:00PM Adrienne Arsht Center This epic theatrical event includes three plays performed all in one day with added stretch breaks and a dinner break. The story follows epic hero young Casper Kent as he discovers he is the heir to the Crown and that he must recover a lost hammer and defend against pirates and a militant faction. This larger than life show includes over twenty actors, a sixteen-foot dragon, brilliant puppetry, model ships, and stage combat all taking place from 1:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. It promises to be one of the most unique (if exhausting) theatrical experiences of the year, and, perhaps, a perfect day to spend with Mom for Mother’s Day. 1:00 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

n BEATRIZ SANTIAGO MUNOZ MONDAY 5/09 @ 10:00AM Perez Art Museum Perez Art Museum Miami’s newest exhibition presents a selection of work from innovative filmmaker and video artist Beatriz Santiago Munoz. The works capture the ironies of postcolonial conditions in the Caribbean, including stories about a popular Haitian market, a toxic tropical flower, and a newly discovered archeological site in Puerto Rico. The exhibition runs until November. 10:00 a.m. Perez Art Museum Miami. 1103 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

n BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL

TUESDAY 5/10 @ 8:00PM Broward Center Broadway’s smash musical Beautiful: The Carole King Story comes to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts to tell the biography of music legend Carole King. This jukebox musical uses some of King’s best-loved works in order to tell the story of her early life and her quick rise in the music industry. The 2014 Broadway production won Tony Awards for Best Sound Design and Best Leading Actress in a Musical. 8:00 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

n RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE: BATTLE OF THE SEASONS

WEDNESDAY 5/11 @ 9:00PM Parker Playhouse As a reality show, RuPaul’s Drag Race has reached critical mass: it has become the most successful LGBTQ-themed reality show of all time. This American Idol-esque tour lends credence to such assertions. The 2016 Extravaganza Tour includes such beloved performers as Adore Delano, Ginger Minj, Miss Fame, Courtney Act, Phi Phi O’Hara, and Violet Chachki. Singer, radio DJ, and author Michelle Visage hosts. 9:00 p.m. Parker Playhouse 707 NE Eighth St. Fort Lauderdale. 33301.

YOUR LIFE: AN OWNER’S MANUAL

Too Much Baggage; Join The Group!

n

Baggage is something we all feel we have at some time in our life. What exactly is baggage? Baggage is an analogy we use to describe elements in our past that we bring into a new situation. It often interferes with our ability to be successful in our new venture. However, most people don’t realize that baggage is not the event that transpired, but the emotions we assign to the event. There is a clinical By term we use that’s called James Radical Miller Acceptance. It essentially means you accept the facts as they are without the emotion that you experienced. The facts are the facts and will not change regardless of how much you want them to. When you accept the situation for what it is, it’s easier to see which feelings you have assigned to it. For example, let’s say your current “baggage” is you’ve been in, what you perceive to be, multiple failed relationships. You enter into the next relationship feeling broken,

with low self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness and shame. The fact is your relationships did not last. The actual baggage you bring into the new relationship is the negative self-perception you experienced after each relationship ended - not the failure of the relationship itself. What most people do is assign situations from their past as descriptors of who they are today. The events you went through are simply events, they are not your identity. If you assign them as such, you ultimately will bring the emotional baggage into the new situation and will not be able to start afresh. Think of your life as a jigsaw puzzle. Each life event is somehow connected to another event and they make up the overall picture of your life. If you were to isolate one of those puzzle pieces and try and figure out how it fits into the final picture, it will not make sense. It’s the same thing in your own life. When you isolate a past event, you often will have tunnel vision and it colors your future. You then identify yourself by the fallout of that event. Life is fluid; it’s always changing. If your belief about yourself and the events you experi-

enced become the identify of who you are then you will not be able to successfully transition into the next chapter of your life. Each event you have experienced has all worked together to create the amazing person that you are today. You cannot always be on the mountaintop. Life will make you walk through many valleys to reach the next summit. The key is to walk through the valley and not camp out in it. Of course, you would not want to experience the same life events again, but remember, just like the jigsaw puzzle, it all works together to create the person you are today. You determine what is considered baggage in your own life. Society often dictates that certain things are not socially acceptable and will try and make you feel badly about yourself. You get to decide how much you let that affect you. If you remove your negative emotions from past events and focus on who you are today, those past events will be a healthy foundation for the next chapter of your life. Leave the baggage in the past. The only thing that serves you today are the lessons you have learned along the way. Travel lightly.

CHECK YOUR LUGGAGE AT THE DOOR

T

hough you’ve now been told for about the 37th time that, “it’s not you; it’s me,” we’re thinking it’s time to consider the fact that it might, in fact, be you. Trust us. We’ve been there. And no, we’re not projecting. Though on the list of the 5 ways you can tell you have emotional baggage.

YOU’RE PROJECTING. Those with baggage can oftentimes be riddled with self-doubt. What makes this self-doubt even worse is that, as you see the worst in yourself, you also begin assuming the same of others. YOU’RE PARANOID. We don’t blame you for being a bit suspicious about infidelity, especially if you’ve been burned in the past. But in order for a relationship to work, you have to trust each other. YOU’RE COMPARING TO THE PAST. This goes beyond simple paranoia. If you see him smile in a certain way— or utter a certain phrase—and you immediately think of your abusive ex-partner, or that immature idiot you rebounded with, or that unfortunate one-night stand, you’re letting your past drag you unnecessarily down. YOU’RE THROWING UP WALLS. In order to fully commit to each other, you should also know each other pretty darn well. Holding back on emotions, or reliving painful events from the past in ways that affect your present, can keep a relationship stagnant. YOU’RE HOLDING BACK OK. So commitment-phobes are everywhere, and some of them aren’t carrying an ounce of baggage. But in many cases, the fear of tying oneself down can be indicative of a deeper problem. If you’re not giving any of your relationships half a chance, it’s time to do some soul-searching. There’s nothing wrong with being single, but is it what you really want? And if it’s not, what’s making you hesitate when you come across the possibility of love? In the end, it all comes down to trust. Want to leave that baggage behind? Allow yourself to trust again.
