The Lumière Brothers ძმები ლუმიერები The most famous among famous brothers are Auguste Marie Louis Nicolas and Louis Jean Lumière. They were born in France. Their father had a photography factory where both brothers started to work after graduating from university. One was a manager, the other – a physicist. The French history might not be telling us much about the firm, but everyone has seen its gate, everyone who has seen the first movie. Had it not been love for the yet unknown filmmaking of the Lumière brothers, cinematography could’ve been born much later. They arranged the first screening for a circle of friends, in 1895, at Salon Indien du Grand Café – a famous location at the time. The screenings were only 50 seconds long. The first film showed the workers were leaving the factory. They’ve made a total of ten films. The new invention went around the world, but the pessimist brothers thought cinema had no future. So they sold the cinematograph to Méliès… This was where their filmmaking career ended, although everyone still remembers the single-scene films as the beginning of filmmaking. Nobody among inventors has a biography and a list of patents as long as that of Thomas Alva Edison – he was an American inventor and a businessman. Over 1093 inventions are associated with his name. Had it not been him, we would have never been able to record sounds, or use electro energy at home. One of his inventions has his voice recorded. “Mary had a little lamb” – is the text the inventor is reading. The first invention Edison sold was an improved version of the telegraph, a quadruplex telegraph able to receive 4 signals simultaneously. They paid him more than he could have imagined. He used that money to set up a lab. Ironically, he was called stupid at school…The only person to believe in him was his mother. “My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me; and I felt I had something to live for, someone I must not disappoint.” Thomas Edison made the best of himself. He is so often referred to these days that it’s hard to forget that the light-bulb shining in every home is one his inventions…
