Buy cheap, buy twice! A tent is the centrepiece of any camping trip - your home away from home so make sure you buy one that lasts. The longer the guarantee, the better the quality of the tent is likely to be. You don’t want to spend your whole trip putting up the tent so make sure the tent is simple to erect and to pull back down. Unfortunately you can never guarantee the weather, so you want to make sure your tent is weather proof. You can check water resistance by looking for a waterhead rating (which is measured in mm). For tent flys, 1000mm is considered low, while 3000mm is considered fairly high. In addition to the waterhead rating of the fabric, fly design and taped seams will add to the weather resistance of a tent. Of course it certainly can get hot during those long summer days, so you want to make sure there is plenty of ventilation and shade from awnings. Make sure your tent has good, strong, flexible poles and plenty of guy ropes to ensure the best possible chance against strong wind conditions. The weight of the tent material, which in polyester tents is measured in denier, and in canvas tents is measured in grams per m2 is a guide to the strength of the material. For the most rugged and durable product, choose the heaviest weight available. The weight of the floor material is also very important as this is the area that arguably receives the most wear and tear during use, and the last thing you want is a hole in the floor that allows moisture and mud in if the campsite ground is wet. Again, the heavier the floor material the better. Coleman tents use heavy duty, waterproof flooring materials so you can be sure you are getting as durable a design as possible. ®

Canvas performs differently to polyester when wet. Polycotton breathes which mostly eliminates the moisture buildup (condensation) experienced with nylons and polyesters. Additionally, when polycotton gets wet the cotton fibres swell and in doing so close any holes in the fabric, hence keeping water out. • Canvas fabric is very breathable • Quiet due to heavier fabric walls • Resists heating up or cooling down quickly due to the thickness of the fabric • Sturdy in windy conditions due to their greater weight and strong steel frame • A solid tent for longer-term holiday camping

What is Canvas? Canvas is a generic term for fabric made from cotton fibres. In Coleman® tents, polyester has been added to cotton to form polycotton canvas. Unlike 100% cotton fabrics which will shrink, fade and mildew more quickly, polycotton fabrics are also stronger and lighter.

For added versatility, Coleman® canvas tents can also be fitted with removable walls and floor to the main front awning area to create a fully-enclosed sunroom/secure extra room, or a windbreak for more comfortable outdoor-living.

BATTERY LANTERN BUYING TIPS

As a guide, a typical 60 watt soft white light bulb provides about 84 lumens. To light a space (campsite area etc.) you should look for at least 140 Lumens. For directional lighting such as flashlights and headlamps, 40 Lumens and up is sufficient for most activities.

The lighting source the product relies on to produce light may have some bearing on the run time and the colour of the light produced. Battery powered lights generally produce whiter light than fueled lanterns. LED lights use the least energy so have a greater run time, and never need to be replaced. On the other hand, they can not light large areas as brightly as fluorescent lights - they have a lower Lumen output.

Run Time is calculated based on the amount of time the lighting product will provide ‘useful light’ from full charge / full fuel capacity. Run time is generally measured in hours. Consider where you will be using your lighting product and your access to different energy sources; different lighting products can be powered by different power sources such as 12V or 24 recharging leads (charge in wall socket before use or via car socket while enroute), alkaline batteries, gas or fuel.

Finally if it really is a good light it should have a long guarantee. Coleman® lights generally come with at least a 3 year and most have 5 year guarantees.

Coleman’s entire range of sleeping bags have been tested in the independent laboratories of the School of Physics and Materials Engineering at Monash University in Melbourne. Dr Don Hutton, an Honorary Research Fellow and a keen bushwalker and camper, conducted the tests by inserting a centrally heated “mannequin” into the sleeping bag and maintaining a constant power input.
