Flinders Quartet 2021 Season Brochure

Page 1

Who could have predicted the events of 2020? We know you will have missed the transcendence of live music, particularly when it was needed most. The rapid changes to our lives and time out from performing have provided an opportunity for the quartet to reaffirm our love of and commitment to great music & to try our hand at some technological innovation. Our motto has always been “caring for tradition, daring to be different” and 2021 will reflect our will to embrace the future while cherishing the beloved masterworks of our canon. Some exciting new projects are afoot in 2021, including: •

Our Margaret Sutherland recording project for ABC Classic over two years

Mentorship of our chosen group from Musica Viva’s Strike a Chord national secondary school chamber music competition

Continuation of our role as Artistic Patrons of John Noble’s Quartet Program

An exciting second residency at Footscray High School focusing on the music of Bartók

Long anticipated performances at the Adelaide Festival and every Melbournian’s dream in winter: escaping to Townsville for the Australian Festival of Chamber Music

We have changed our concert times slightly to give you more options to hear us live or online. All programs will be streamed - stay tuned for more details. We now have two concert times at the Melbourne Recital Centre Primrose Potter Salon: 11am and 6pm; our Montsalvat concerts remain unchanged at 2:30pm and we are adding the acoustically sublime St John’s in Flinders, on the Mornington Peninsula. We want to take this opportunity to send a big musical hug to everyone and to let you know that we will have many opportunities for you to experience the wonder of the string quartet canon in addition to those exciting live, ‘in person’ performances, which we will never take for granted again. We look forward to sharing live streamed concerts, online performance content on demand, as well as new studio recordings. Thibaud, Zoe, Wilma and Helen.

“...clearly a passionate and precise group that give exquisite clarity to each piece performed.” NIGHT WRITES, MARCH 2020

“... exciting and effervescent ... had the audience sitting up in their seats paying close attention to the impeccable intonation, rhythmic unity and open communication of the four players...” CLASSIC MELBOURNE, MARCH 2019

A NOTE FROM JULIAN BURNSIDE AO QC CHAIR OF THE FLINDERS QUARTET BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Now, more than ever, we are grateful for the artistry and commitment of musicians like Flinders Quartet as we navigate a path through these uncharted waters together. While the delivery methods for concerts may be different, and may even seem strange at times, what remains is a commitment to great music-making and a belief in the need for composers to represent this time in history through the creation of music. I am looking forward to the programs in 2021 immensely and am especially looking forward to FQ winning me over to Bartok with one of their signature performances.

PROGRAM 1 • MAY 2 021 [ P H A N TA S Y ]

FQ Clifford Hocking AM memorial concert We are honoured to remember Clifford Hocking AM and his profound contribution to the arts in this country. Clifford first heard us in 2004 and championed our desire to become a professional string quartet based in Melbourne. His support and subsequent grant through the Harold Mitchell Foundation was instrumental in giving us the time we needed to develop as a string quartet at a crucial time. His legacy as a man who was incredibly intelligent about all matters musical with a desire to champion great music is one that we celebrate in this concert.

“In listening and preparing for this program, I’ve been struck that all these pieces encapsulate the strength and flexibility of quartet playing. The different pieces that stretch across decades, touch almost every emotion possible. I’m particularly drawn to the beautiful Romanze in the Mendelssohn, a movement with which you could draw comparisons to Beethoven with its dark passionate anguish before moving onto the more virtuosic Allegro Molto Vivace final movement. Pairing the lesser known works with Mendelssohn and Holst shows off the quality of our Australian composers. It will be so exciting to be making music again, and I can’t think of a better way to start the year!.” T H I B A U D PAV L O V I C - H O B B A , V I O L I N

“During my early years of quartet playing in America, I was lucky enough to study several of Bartók’s quartets with venerated European emigres who had known Bartók. In fact, one of them, violist Eugene Lehner of the Kolisch Quartet, premiered the 5th quartet in 1935 and also the 6th which Bartók dedicated to them. I still remember studying that one with him. The idiosyncratic rhythmic freedoms he encouraged us to take really opened our eyes to the character of the folk elements so important to Bartók. I’m looking forward to tackling the fiendishly tricky 5th quartet for the first time!” WILMA SMITH, VIOLIN

PROGRAM

( 70mins no interval )

BÉLA BARTÓK Selected movements from Bartók’s six string quartets BÉLA BARTÓK String Quartet No.5 Peter Bartók’s illuminating memoir of his father, Béla, inspired us to delve deeper into the musical portrait of this enigmatic man. Bartók’s fascination with folk melodies and their assimilation into “classical” music is well known, but what about the other elements of his life? The sense of displacement after he fled Hungary to America, the intense discipline with which he lived his life? Through anecdotes and letters, Richard Piper (who was the brilliant dramaturge on our “Puck’s Dream” and Shostakovich projects) helps us unearth some personal meaning behind the seminal canon of Bartók’s six string quartets.

“Every time I hear the first few notes of Beethoven’s Op. 131 it sends tingles through my skin. I have the same response to the opening of Cheetham’s Bungaree and the third movement of Shostakovich’s 6th string quartet. One could argue that those spine-tingling moments are a prerequisite for us choosing repertoire! I have tried to analyse why some music manages to evoke such a physical and emotional response but haven’t yet found the precise answer. My guess is that sometimes we just have to accept that great art often defies explanation.” ZOE KNIGHTON, CELLO

“The Composer Development Program has become one of the highlights of the quartet year for me. I relish the opportunity to work in such a collaborative way with composers. It’s exciting and satisfying to play brand new works and give composers an opportunity to experiment and receive immediate feedback. We get to see their works develop as a result of hearing their works played live, often for the first time and working with a mentor. I love the way the format of our program gives us the time to rehearse and record the works, giving the composers a product that will take them forward in their careers. H E L E N I R E L A N D, V I O L A

FQ CO M P OSE R D EVELOPM ENT PROGRAM Over the years, the pile of scores sent from composers grew exponentially and we were very conscious of the fact that we could be missing some real gems by not playing them. We decided to devote specific time to establish our Composer Development Program and put out a national call for scores from composers (all ages welcome) to be assessed anonymously. Since the inaugural program in 2016, we have been privileged to discover some phenomenal talent. Successful participants enjoy time with a composition mentor, workshops with the quartet, a studio recording of their work and a live-streamed concert reaching national and international audiences. All emerging Australian composers are invited to apply. We are delighted to announce that our 2021 composition mentor will be Dr Katy Abbott. Stay tuned for an announcement about our 2021-22 emerging composer in residence.

Deadline for submissions: Wednesday 31 March, 2021 (5pm) Program dates to be announced. Sign up to our e-news or social media for announcements. For full details (including submission T&Cs) visit flindersquartet.com/composer

This performance will be live streamed on Wednesday 16 June, 7.30pm AEST please visit flindersquartet.com for details “I can personally attribute a large portion of my string quartet compositional skills to my time spent with the Flinders and their generosity in workshopping and providing opportunities to have my compositions brought to life over the years. They work with both established and emerging Australian composers and are industry-leading in this sense. N ATA L I E N I C O L A S , C O M P O S E R

E DUC AT I O N & OUTREACH Teenagers are the perfect age to introduce to the magic of the string quartet canon. Given that most composers reserve their most intimate compositions for chamber music, there are many opportunities to explore themes that teenagers find really relevant: love, oppression, exile, belonging. In 2019, we began our residency at Footscray High School and it was so successful, we were invited to continue into 2020-21. Students are encouraged to explore the music we play and respond in their chosen medium. Dance, art, visual communication, drama and music students work together to present a concert unlike any we have ever produced. Exploring the music of Bartók, Deborah Cheetham and Margaret Sutherland, this program is inspiring, uplifting and filling the next generation of audience with the joy of chamber music!

STRI K E A CH O RD M ENTORSHIP “The chance to be mentored by the Flinders Quartet, one of Australia’s most enduring, creative and collaborative professional string quartets, is a wonderful opportunity for an outstanding young group.” ANNE FRANKENBERG

Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Musica Viva Australia

In 2021, we are mentoring a prize-winning secondary school ensemble as part of Musica Viva’s Strike a Chord competition. Keep an eye out as we work with them throughout the year and even invite them on stage with us in one of our performances.

JO H N N OB LE ’S QUARTET PROGRAM (JNQP) Since 2018, FQ have been Artistic Patrons of John Noble’s String Quartet Program, and now work with seven regional ensembles from Mildura, Bairnsdale, Shepparton, Bendigo, Warrnambool, Traralgon and Sunshine/ Wyndham Vale. FQ presents side by side concerts and ongoing mentoring, culminating in a weekend that brings all of the ensembles together in a true celebration of the chamber music collaborative spirit.

“Our Artistic Patrons, Flinders Quartet, have enabled many inspiring opportunities for the members of John Noble’s Quartet Program. Not even the threat of COVID-19 has slowed them down. Instead, they have reacted innovatively and created unique virtual lessons for our ensembles. This has ensured that our regional ensembles continue to be connected to professional musicians, experiencing the amazing professionalism and musicianship from the exceptional Flinders Quartet. As soon as it is safe to do so, we will be again taking FQ to regional Victoria. We will host life changing side-by-side concerts with our young musicians as we celebrate the wonderful art of Chamber Music.” JOHN

NOBLE

Director & Creator of John Noble’s Quartet Program

“I can’t thank FQ enough for your music direction and your exuberance. It has opened me up to small ensemble playing, which I NEVER saw myself doing. The excitement I feel when I work with you is something I just can’t explain…” K E R I J E N N I N G S , JNQP participant

A D AY A T D E L A T I T E What began as a one-off concert is flourishing into a mini festival. Wine and chamber music have always been great partners, and FQ is planning a “Day at Delatite” for October 2021 in Delatite Wines’ newly refurbished cellar door facilities. A natural evolution of a long partnership, we invite you to come up to the high country for a spring mini festival involving performances, food and plenty of wine. Stay tuned for more information.

“My parents first began our relationship with the FQ back in 2001 (at the time Delatite also supported Musica Viva and Chamber Music Australia). When I took over in 2006, Flinders Quartet was the one group that I continued to support and love doing so. To me the passion and commitment shown by the quartet to play beautiful music is a perfect match to our passion to make great wines. We love having them play at the winery and my one regret is that I rarely get to Melbourne to hear them play.” D AV I D R I T C H I E , Managing Director, Delatite Wines

FQ SU TH E RLAND FE STIVAL • VILLA ALBA A progressive concert through the rooms of Villa Alba, exploring the history surrounding this magnificent mansion and the music of local icon, and Australian musical matriarch, Margaret Sutherland. As we embark on our project to record the complete works for string quartet by Margaret Sutherland for ABC Classic, we have prepared a unique audience experience, combining the history of this magnificent and sometimes overlooked mansion with the music of a magnificent and overlooked composer. Sutherland’s music is clever, intriguing, passionate and above all, enduring. We know you will fall in love with this music as we have. Before each concert, a short introduction will provide insight into the history of the rooms and the many lives of Villa Alba. If only those walls could talk.

2020 A YEAR OF REFLECTION 2020 gave us the opportunity to debut for Melbourne Digital Concert Hall. Performing Katy Abbott’s “Hidden Thoughts II: Return to Sender” was the experience of a lifetime for us, especially in lockdown and we are thrilled to say that we will be revisiting this work in 2022.

“In delivering what is both a disquieting piece of social activism as well as a moving affirmation of human solidarity, Abbott was blessed with performers perfectly in tune with her vision. The Flinders Quartet (for whom this work was written) engaged sensitively with singer Dimity Shepherd & narrator Richard Piper, both of whom made clarity & sincerity their hallmark.” T H E A G E , July 2020 “The Quartet played with immense sensitivity, totally immersed in Abbott’s depiction of a heart-wrenching situation. Actor Richard Piper & mezzo-soprano Dimity Shepherd were no less committed & compelling as they revealed heartfelt messages sent to detainees.” C L A S S I C M E L B O U R N E , July 2020 Thanks to everyone for sustaining us through what has been a most challenging year for so many of us. One thing is for certain, the landscape for the arts has been changed - perhaps permanently. FQ has used 2020 to reflect on our history and look at how we can seek out future opportunities. The advent of the online concert has proven itself more than a blessing for those unable to go out, those with young children, and those with busy schedules, allowing them to experience more concerts than they would normally. We have loved bringing you Friday with Flinders. The chance to connect was essential to us and your words of support truly sustained us as we spent many hours rehearsing on our own at home.

“Times that would be much more difficult if other cultural groups, an important part of so many lives, had not made their virtual contribution as have Flinders Quartet.” JAN COLLINS
