It’s been a very good year for me, but I’m looking forward to a bit of down time (or, what I like to call, some champagne time) as we hit December. BAKED SPECULAAS DONUTS Speculaas, also pronounced, speculoos, are flatbaked spiced shortbread biscuits, typically imprinted with a decorative image on the face-up side. The texture is buttery and rich with a caramely-brown sugared crumb. As they bake to a splittery-crisp texture, intense aromas of ginger, cinnamon and cloves waft from the oven, weakening the resolve of even the toughest cookieabstainer. Originating in the Netherlands and neighbouring Belgium, speculaas are traditionally baked on, or just prior to St Nicholas’ Day and eaten as the sound of Christmas carols fills the air. If the provenance of these cookies is of little interest to you, never mind. Point is, if you love donuts, chances are this recipe could lead to a long and very harmonious relationship with the speculaas family. I’ll definitely be mixing up a batch of traditional speculaas biscuits this Christmas, but in the meanwhile, baked speculaas donuts, it is.

• 80ml (1/3 cup) vegetable oil • 125ml (1/2 cup) plus 3 tablespoons demerara or brown sugar • 2 eggs • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 125ml (1/2 cup) sour cream • 60ml (1/4 cup) buttermilk Glaze • 1 cup powdered sugar • 3 tablespoons milk • pinch of salt

Method

1. Sift all the dry ingredients together. 2. In a separate jug, combine the butter, oil, sugar, eggs, vanilla, sour cream and buttermilk. 3. Add the wet ingredients to the flour and mix to combine. The batter should be smooth and lump-free. 4. Spray a mini waffle maker with non-stick cooking spray. Ladle 1 tablespoon of batter into Baked Speculaas donuts each donut hole and cook for several minutes. 5. Alternatively, if using a donut pan, bake in a • 200g (1⅓ cups) all-purpose cake flour preheated oven at 180º C for about 15-18 minutes or until cooked through. • 1 teaspoon baking powder 6. Transfer the cooked donuts to a cooling rack • ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda and continue with the remaining batter. • pinch of salt 7. To make the glaze, combine the powdered • 1½ teaspoons cinnamon sugar, milk and salt in a small mixing bowl. • ½ teaspoon ground ginger 8. Once completely cool, dip the tops of the do• ¾ teaspoon all spice nuts into the glaze and allow excess to drip off. • ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg 9. Zenzero I love Camps Bay, and Zenzero restaurant is located at the heart of this bustling area, overlooking the beach. We went on a beautiful spring day, and spent a lazy Sunday afternoon enjoying the sunshine. I fell in love with the restaurant the moment I walked in. As a writer, the massive bookshelf that lined their walls brought me instant joy. While elegant, it’s also gives off a relaxed and homely vibe.

taste Stop the press! I found my favourite starter of all time, and it was not at all what I was expecting it to be. In fact, I almost didn’t order it. I asked my waiter for a suggestion and he assured me it was one of the best, so I trusted his judgement. What was it? The Spicy Tuna Bowl from Firefish Restaurant. Spicy tuna, sticky rice, avocado, crispy shallot, and crispy garlic, in a nori and spicy aioli. Although I like to call it, heaven in a bowl. Firefish Restaurant just opened up to the public, and I was excited to visit. The pictures to the left are from their website - so you can imagine why I was looking forward to it so much. Also, any chance to spend a relaxing evening at the Waterfront is one I’ll snatch up. Living in Blouberg means I don’t always venture out that way any more. What better excuse then this: beautiful looking food. We went on a chilly Friday afternoon, and I was looking forward to sitting back with a glass of wine and seeing if they were worth the hype. The waiter was very friendly and knowledgable, and there to answer any questions we might have. I decided to leave most of my ordering up to him, and I was glad that I did. It was, as already said, the way I discovered the BEST STARTER IN THE WORLD (worthy of all the capital letters). It’s an interesting menu. They’ve set it up so that you can choose to have your food your way or their way. Their way is the way the chef recommends it, and includes all their signature dishes. I decided to choose only from that side of the menu and put my fate in their hands. I was glad that I did. We’ve already discussed my starter, and for my main I chose the Norwegian Salmon Fillet (with

crispy skin, black bean, parmesan and truffle). They are not stingy on the salmon - the portions are big and the fish was incredible. For starters Warren went for the Beef Tataki Tartar (which included quail egg, picked mustard seed, fresh horshradish, picked baby onion, garlic chips and onion ponzu). Again, a very big portion and well worth the price. For his mains he created his own sushi platter (he said the salmon roses were his favourite). Let’s talk price. Is it a bit more expensive than what I usually pay when I go out? Yes. Is it in line with other restaurants at the waterfront? Yes. Would I go again? Yes. There are also cheaper options such as the vegetarian dishes and the burger (I saw the burger and it looked amazing). Personally, I would go back over and over again just for the Spicy Tuna Bowl. I’d ask to have it as a starter, and then order it again as a main. That’s honestly how much I enjoyed it. Spoil yourself. The Flying Pig Smokehouse and Darling Brew have collaborated! We can’t go to Darling without popping in at Darling Brew. It’s one of my favorite places to visit for lunch. Beer lovers will love sitting inside – a beautiful restaurant overlooking their working microbrewery, but there’s also the choice of a great outside area as well as a section for the kids. We decided to take a visit to try out their new menu, which has only been out for four months. We met Gil, from the Flying Pig, who explained the new menu to us. The new menu is a smokehouse delight such as smoked pulled pork and pulled brisket, and each element has been carefully paired with a few beer or wine choices. Everything on the menu is locally sourced from the meat and cheese to the bread. This alone is the epitome of what Darling stands for – a community that thrives on its local culture. We decided to start off with two of their new beers. I had the Rooi Bok (a 5.1% lager) which was perfect for me. I’m not as much of a beer drinker as my husband, and this beer was light and easy to drink. Warren went for the Godfather (a 7.5% rye IPA) which he loved. This beer was first launched at the 2017 Clarens Craft Beer Festival. It has a hoppy taste, and was a lot heavier than my lager. There is a wide selection of beers on offer so it’s easy to find something to suit your needs, and Warren and I chose well for our tastes. However, if you’re not sure what to get I would recommend doing a tasting of a few before deciding. They offer 100ml glasses of all their beers.

Choosing something from their menu wasn’t easy. Everything looked amazing. Eventually Warren went for the Smoked Pulled Beef – 6 hour smoked and 6 hour roasted beef served with gherkins, mustard and slaw on traditional West Coast roosterkoek with fries. I decided to try out one of their vegan offerings, the Pulled Mushroom – smoked, pulled mushroom served with vegan dressed slaw on roosterkoek and fries. I received my first Storyteller’s Box and I LOVED it. Here’s what happened... I’ve had my eye on Storyteller’s Box for a while now. So, last month, I decided to treat myself. I’m hopeless at a bookshop. I often want to buy so much that I end up buying nothing, and I tend to stick to the authors that I know. What I loved about Storyteller’s Box is that you’re leaving your reading fate into the hands of someone else. The box cost R350 (without shipping) and I received four books (and a few other fun trinkets). I went for the assorted fiction box, and added a note that I don’t read fantasy. I was lucky. I received four books I had never read before, and they all look beautiful! So, what happens if you receive a book

How did you come up for the idea? About two years ago I was looking at ordering a book subscription from the US and while the cost of the box was not too steep the cost for shipping was horrific. My first response was “Why isn’t there a South African box?” From there I decided to start my very own.

Tell me about your team. Without the team the company would only be an empty shell, with no character. We are a family, where we have each other's backs and we support one another, through tough days and good days. It is important for me that the team is in good health, not only body, but mind too. A happy team is one which moves forward with ease, performs well and will give their best always with smiles included. Together we grow!

Alex & Marla are the names of my two beautiful daughters, whom I hope will one day have an interest in participating in the business. Fingers crossed! It all began many moons ago, in 2009, when I took a chance and bought an industrial sewing machine and some cow hides. I figured that I loved leather, working with my hands, and a challenge. Women love adding to their handbag collection, whether they need one or not, so I figured it wasn't a risky business venture. It took me a year and a half before opening our doors, as I did everything myself: the collection, the website the production… you name it, I did it. The opening was such a success that a little more than a month later, we had shut down in order to get more staff. It was only me, Cindy and baba Marla! Crazy times looking back now. Two years later we have 4 production team members, Cindy, Ayanda, Phelo, Busie and 1 photographer and social manager, Suzanne from Suzanne Swart Photography.

When you're not involved with the company, what are you doing? Weekends I enjoy spending time with my daughters, husband, family and friends. I believe it is important to create a balance in life between business and personal. I don't want to look back one day and regret the time I wish I had spend with the people I care for and love.

If we were to find you at a cafe, where would you be? Definitely at The Eatery in Hermanus. Love it! Madre, the owner, has created such a great atmosphere, with good service and a menu that is sure to please anyone's taste buds. I will be having my favorite, which will be their Thai fish cakes, accompanied by a nice glass of some local Lomond Sauvignon Blanc wine.

How can we stay in touch? Whichever way is most convenient for our client! As mentioned, we strive to give the best service possible. Cindy is the light of our workshop, creating atmosphere and bringing warmth. AYANDA - Our main man, Ayanda. He came like a dream, stitches like a dream, and his dreams are just as inspiring as he is. Ayanda’s patience and enthusiasm has given him the ability to create pieces of pure perfection, which he can be proud of. PHELO - Phelokazi is the softest, sweetest person you’ll meet. She is one of our workshop assistants. Phelo not only has a beautiful smile, but also has a great amount of patience and attention to detail. BUSIE - Busisiwe is the newest member to our little team. We meet one of my favourite creatives in South Africa, the lovely Tracey Preston from 10.11.12.

Tell me more about the company and how it started. It began in thought when I was looking to create a space for our boys to share before Knox was born (five years ago). I was hugely frustrated to find, at the time, that very little existed in the market for boys other than nautical stripes and ‘boxer shorts tartan’. Everything was mainstream movie character driven. As much as Mr V loved Lightening McQueen at the time, he loved SO much more about life, and then out grew McQueen so fast as it was. Life happened and it all got put on hold. Three years, and an entirely different business later, I’m finally here, building a business around those first thoughts. In the interim though, I’ve grown and changed, and so have our boys. We even added another boy to our little tribe. As each fella’s needs and personalities grew, my idea of how this business would roll out did to. I’ve come to the realization that for me, beautiful spaces are not so much about the eye appeal, and more about the heart and mind appeal. It’s about creating beautiful memories. That thought gave birth to my little business ethos: Childhood is forever. Each of us carries it to our end, childhood. We reference it daily and it is an integral part of who we are, and who we ultimately become. So, for me, being a part of creating those first few incredible childhood memories, or helping to bring them back, in spaces that will always be remembered with love, is hugely humbling and a very big honor.

Cool name, tell us more. 10.11.12 is our wedding date. It the date Luke and I cemented our lives together. Much of this business is built around our lives, our experiences and our best childhood memories, many of which are similar. We both keep our inner child very close to the surface. 10.11.12 was also, on inception of the business, my intended target markets age (tweens/teens). As you can see, MANY variations of thought and much processing has happened around 10.11.12, until I realized I didn’t have to stick with one age group only. This brand is about spaces for the young, AND young at heart.

Tell us about your three separate ranges. Basil & Sox – for littles [0-2 y/o]: named for our littlest guys Knox and Zac (nicknames). Everything from linen and scatters to toys, plushies, wall art, vinyl wall stickers and other décor goodies that will help to make spaces more special and memorable. We don’t have a huge amount available on our site yet, (we are still pretty new, all things considered) but there is so much in the planning phase. As soon as I can build solid bonds with reliable suppliers to keep costs reasonable, (a massive challenge for a small business that I was not expecting), I’ll be producing SO much more.

Blanket Fort [9 -16 y/o]: named for my go to survival/happy space. Blanket forts have been our saving grace in our tribe, with one of our littles living with sensory issues and high functioning ASD, he is much like his mama. I had intended to call 10.11.12 Blanket Fort at first (before I had conceived the different ranges). I aim to bring out décor and bedding for tweens and teens that really helps to feed their individuality and sense of self, while still creating amazing childhood memories. At first the range was specifically aimed at boys and their lack of good looking décor/linen generally, but as the range grew in my head, I realized that I was creating unisex items, for individuals, not “boys” or “girls” because that is how we aim to raise our kids. We don’t place any barriers on what is gender specific for them. So my first bedding range “Boards and Baggies” is purely for anyone with the love of the ocean. Again, connected to some of our best childhood memories. Also, we are beach creatures, living in a landlocked city, bringing the surf into our space, in any way we can is a MUST! MaLuna: named for my Mother Moon. My guide and light. The range itself is my slant on décor and home ware that celebrates the beautiful memories from my childhood (and hopefully yours). Time has been tight the last few years with two littles 17 months apart and a business, but I’m truly loving sinking my teeth back into my Terry Pratchett collection again, as things ease and they become more independent.

As a mother, how involved do the kids get in your business? Hahaha! Where DON’T they get involved? They are a HUGE part of it. My daughter is a wonderful sounding board and has incredible design ideas, so brainstorming with her is a treat. She’s been a part of my freelance life since she was born. She has never held back when giving opinions and advice on anything from logo designs (when she was 2) to new textile and wall art designs we are working on now, 15 years later. The Vikings are in and out of the studio (our bedroom is also my studio/office, so don’t think I’m all fancy and have a fabulous, light, airy, glass sided space to play in - #lifegoals) all day and are ALWAYS willing to tell me how I’m doing (they are BRUTAL but funny). I take careful note of their reactions as a gauge when deciding to release a piece of art or not. Their hearts have no real malice, so when they say it rocks, I trust them. When they pull faces… it’s just the truth. A lot of the designs and products I have in planning phase now are based on their brother (they have a beautiful brother who lives with his mama in KZN) and sister’s loves, needs and wants. So literally, it’s all about them. And they are involved as much as humanly possible… and some days that means I NEED to WINE (heh).

I’m a home body (read: hermit, I struggle with being around others, home is my happy place). I love being in the garden. It’s grounding and very needed. Then flat out work until late morning when the Vikings return from their walk and we do some crafts/art/drawing and hands on learning (I will be homeschooling our younger two, our older two are both in mainstream schools). Then a much-needed coffee break with a bit of yoga/ stretching outside and back to work until we all go to fetch the teen again at 4pm. Occasionally I’ll put in a few hours at night, but these days I try to have my work/life balance more in tune with happiness than a sweat shop. Bedtime for littles is 7pm, and then I get to hang out with my fella and daughter, sip a vino, make dinner together and have conversations without someone yelling “ MOMMY HE’S TRYING TO EAT MY FACE OFF!!”

Let's talk colour: Which colour inspires you? I want to say “ALL THE COLOURS” because really, we are surrounded by so much that is just aweinspiring. Green would be where I stand if you pushed me though. Juicy, delicious, first green of spring, green.

Which colour palate is most prominent in your home? We have a mostly neutral palette now. A few years ago our home was an eclectic riot of colour, but on our journey to understanding Knox better, and in doing so myself, we have realized that a neutral palette has been the best thing for us all. Having gentle, restful tones in our spaces really helps to take the edge off having five vibrant humans in a two-bedroom home.

How to design a morning habit that works for you Look, I get it. Not all of us are morning people. And more to the point, not all of us have the luxury of spending an hour journalling away or indulging in whatever morning habits our hearts desire. Because LIFE. However, I’m going to take the liberty here and call BS on the, “There’s NO TIME” excuse. There is, always. (I’ll get to that).

Blue Bay Lodge It’s almost unnecessary to write this article. Blue Bay Lodge is one of those places that don’t need words to describe its beauty. The photos say it all. Driving through Saldanha it’s hard to believe that the place even exists. The road leading up to it feels industrial, and barren. A sign points to Blue Bay Lodge and then, quite spectacularly, an oasis awaits. The tagline at Blue Bay Lodge is “Relaxation” and it’s easy to see why. It’s not much of a drive from Cape Town, but it offers everything you need for a truly peaceful getaway. We’re a lucky bunch in this city – we have so much

place I could not recommend enough. It’s also a photographer’s dream. Our room was picture perfect. We spent the evening drinking wine on the balcony as we watched the sun go down, and watching it rise in the morning with our coffee. If only all days could start and end off that way. The lodge itself offers the following amenities: Tennis court, conference centre, swimming pool, braai area, boat launching access, restaurant, laundry service, beauty salon, bar and bird hide. There was an event taking place during our stay, so we chose to have dinner in our room (although, we might have chosen to do this even if there wasn’t an event - the room was too beautiful to leave), and in the morning we were treated to a breakfast buffet with the rest of the guests. I highly recommend having a drink at the bar, or sitting outside to enjoy the view. They have a wide variety of drinks on offer, including Darling Brew on tap, and the barman is very friendly. As a thirty five year old South African it was a bit shocking that I had been on the London Eye but not on a game drive, but alas, it’s true. Also, after asking around, I was surprised to find that many other South African’s fell into this category too. We’re surrounded by the most incredible opportunities in our country and we don’t even realize it. Which is why, when I got the chance to visit Thali Thali Game Reserve and Lodge, I took it. I can now finally say that I’ve been on a game drive, and feel proudly South African.

Thali Thali is situated on the West Coast, and borders the West Coast National Park. It’s just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town (fifteen minutes from Langebaan), and the drive

along the R27 is a beautiful one. We arrived just in time to join the game drive, and eagerly jumped on board. We were taken on a two hour trip around the fynbos reserve to do some wildlife spotting, and we were lucky enough to get up close and personal with some of them. Our guide was very informative and stopped often to point out the animals and answer our many questions. They boast a wide range of game including kudu, giraffe, oryx, eland, zebra, sable, springbok, duiker, black wildebeest, bontebok, steenbok, ostrich, dromedary camel, emu, as well as many bird species. My favourite was by far the incredible giraffes who allowed us to get close enough to them to take photos and watch them as they grazed. What struck me

!Khwa ttu !Khwa ttu is a project dedicated to the education of the San culture. Located on the rolling hills of Darling, neighbouring Yzerfontein, there are a variety of things you can do when visiting this beautiful piece of land – from guided tours, cycling, walking, trail running, eating, and even staying over. We’d been once before, and fell in love with the place, so it was an absolute pleasure to go again and experience it all over. This time, instead of just a tour and a lunch, we spent two very peaceful nights at their offered accommodation. There are three types of accommodation to choose between at !Khwa ttu: the guest house, bush house and bush camp. We were, in particular, looking for places to visit with children, and the bush house was ideal for this. It offered two en-suite bedrooms (one with two single beds, one with a double), a central open plan lounge and kitchen area (with a great fireplace

that we used both nights), and two indoor-outdoor bathrooms. I wasn’t sure how I felt about showering in such a natural setting, but I loved it. It was closed up enough for nobody to see you, but still open enough for you to gaze up at the stars at night. It’s only a 45 minute drive from Blouberg (and only 70km from Cape Town), yet it feels like you are truly in the middle of nowhere. While sitting outside and enjoying our coffee, we had a few ostriches running past, as well as the odd eland and springbok. When visiting the main section of !Khwa ttu we were also greeted by horses and zebras. However, I’m sure if we stayed a bit longer we would’ve seen even more. A lot of the indigenous fauna has been restored and, other than the animals we saw, there are also duikers, steenboks, caracals, aardwolves, porcupines and an abundance of birds.

My friends bought along a myriad of toys for their little boy to play with, but said he didn’t want any of them. He was having too much fun playing on the lawn, going for walks, and spotting the wildlife. ‘Fun’ he said over and over again as he looked around him. After a stressful few weeks of work, and far too much time spent on the computer, it was good to get away. !Khwa ttu is the perfect place to relax, and we spent most of our time just walking around the area, or relaxing by the braai.

Unfortunately, the day we were planning on making use of their mountain bike trails and going for a tour, was a typical windy Cape Town day. Instead, we made our way to the restaurant to enjoy a late and leisurely breakfast. The menu is well-priced, and my ‘lite’ breakfast of eggs and potato rosti’s only set me back R55 (and was not ‘lite’ at all). Thankfully, I’d done the tour before, but it’s definitely something I recommend to all that are visiting for the first time. I took notes the previous time: We took a walk with our San guide, who explained the history behind the San people, and showed us how to correctly identify different

species of plants in the area. Our guide wasn’t just knowledgeable, he was also hilarious, and had us all in fits of laughter. He picked some leaves off a Wild Wormwood plant to give to each of us, explaining to us how to dry it correctly and how to create a tea out of it. I realized how much we rely on modern medicine when everything we need is growing all around us. The reason we don’t know what is good for us is purely because we’ve become so far removed from nature. From there we were taken to see the replica huts to show how the San people lived. Here we were given some of their homemade tea while we sat around the fire to listen to one of the San women speak to us in her home language. The translator explained to us what she was saying which included her entertaining rendition on how the San men show the women that they are interested in them. I won’t say more because this is definitely a tour you have to experience yourself and hear the stories first hand, but I will tell you this much: It involves a bow and arrow!

Langebaan Country Estate was not at all what I expected it to be. For a non-golfer, golf establishments have the stigma of being elite, and maybe even a tad pretentious. I knew the venue would be beautiful—I’d already seen photos of the rolling lawns and impressive landscape—but I never expected it to feel so relaxed and welcomed.

Langebaan Country Estate has a little something for everyone. Obviously, it’s a golfers dream, offering a big 18-hole experience for its guests. The course is challenging and scenic, with the tee off times currently starting at 7.30am and ending at 5pm (In December this changes to 7.30am and 6pm). If you’re a golfer, but still want to get out and experience the field you can try the following: 18-hole Mashie Course: A lot more informal, but still just as challenging, and a great place to take your adventurous kids. There is also a mini clubhouse at this course, with refreshments, so you can make a full day of it. 9-hole Foot Golf: This takes place on the mashie course, and is played in a similar fashion to regular golf, except players use a soccer ball instead of a golf ball. This is a huge hit with both

kids and adults, and right up my alley. Also, if you do badly, you can just blame it on the wind. Pro Putt Course: Harder than it looks, this cleverly designed course is a great place to improve your putting, great for kids, and perfect for those who don’t want to spend a full day out on the course. Langebaan Country Estate offers two types of accommodation: Golf lodges and golf suites. The golf lodges are impressive and spacious, with a choice of two double story units (four en-suite bathrooms) or one bedroom apartments. They are fully equipped, with patio, lounge and braai facilities included. A lot of thought and pride has gone into these apartments, and it shows in every detail. Overlooking the golf course and lake, it’s the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee or evening wine. My first thought when viewing them was, “When can I move in?”

The golf suites are ideal for smaller families and shorter getaways. There are forty two bedroom apartments, all within walking distance to the clubhouse. And if you don’t want to walk, you can hire a bike or take a short drive. Like I said, the place has something for everyone. We were lucky enough to stay during spring season, so the flowers embraced us in full bloom during our walk. The rooms might be self-catering, but that doesn’t mean you’ll always want to cook. Thankfully, there are two places on the estate to eat (also open to the public). Situated at the Clubhouse is the Horizon Restaurant, which overlooks the beautiful golf course. With seating for up to 80 people you can also hire this for your next venue. My favourite part: the pizza oven on their attached patio. Friday nights are pizza night (as all Fridays should be) and we enjoyed the Boerklong Shank Pizza (biltong, cherry tomatoes, feta and avo) and the Albatross (caramelized onions, blue cheese, parma ham and figs). Both amazing. Thin based, and delicious. We didn’t leave a slice. If you looking for a quick bite to eat, you can also pop into Breeze Café to enjoy a breakfast, lunch or quick snack. And if you’re looking for a cocktail (aren’t we always?) then Blaze Bar is the place to go. Langebaan Country Estate is not only open for residents. They’re a welcoming bunch and encourage members of the public to come by and enjoy their facilities. They’ve also got big plans for the future of the estate, so they’re constantly striving to improve. We enjoyed a two hour tour of the entire estate (by golf cart, not by foot – it’s huge!), by the wonderful Kate and Chantal who obviously take great pride in the establishment. I love places like this. Places where the staff are excited to show their guests around. The sense of pride was evident, and I could easily see why. A museum is such a fascinating insight into an area, and a great way to see the progression that has been made over the years. There’s something so interesting about having a piece of history displayed in front of you. I love the little town of Darling, and a trip is not complete without a visit to their museum. The Darling Museum was founded by a group of local farmers’ wives in 1978 to preserve the butter making history of Darling. This section is still there, but the place itself has since grown exponentially over time to showcase a wider variety of historical items. It is only R10 to enter the museum, which is a small price to pay for such an interesting exhibition. You could easily spend two hours moseying through it, while reflecting on a time gone by. Darling was founded in 1853 and the museum does a good job of illustrating the lifestyle and development of the village since then. The layout of this museum is what makes it stand out from others. It’s easy to navigate and separated into different rooms, showing us what life was like back then. You’re taken on a journey through a typical bedroom, kitchen, parlour & dining room and garden, all the way to a general dealers store, a classroom, and even a saloon. It’s a great place for the current generation to see what life used to be like and how much things have changed. There’s even actual bills and invoices in some of the areas showing how much various items used to cost. Trust me - if there is anything that will shock your kids, this will be it.

The museum is crammed full of treasures, and I’m sure if I went again I would see things I never saw the first time around. I was especially fascinated by the butter-making area, as well as the outside barn filled with local agricultural machinery. Take a step back in time and visit the Darling Museum. It’s open 7 days a week, and at only R10 it’s definitely worth the fee. I recommend the Darling Mystery Trail if you have a bit more time. The mystery trail is a treasure hunt with riddles, and takes about two hours. Tickets are R30 (collect at the front desk of the museum), and includes a treasure as well as a chance to win a prize. Bring your smartphone with GPS, QR-Code reader and navigation app, as well as a pen and paper and a sleuth-like mind. This is a great activity if you have children with you. Make a trip out of it.
