From the start of the new year, makeup trends have been taking off. In the midst of the pandemic, people have been trying all the new things, whether that be food, clothes, DIY projects, makeup, whipped coffee, etc. Thus, 2021 is really looking like it’s the year of makeup boldness. Let’s focus on the eyes: we all know that masks are a constant these days, therefore making the eyes our most noticeable feature. All attention is drawn towards the eyes, so the new thing is to spice up the eyes. Some of the most popular trends hitting Pinterest, TikTok and Instagram lately are the messy, brushedup eyebrow look, colorful mascara, bold eyelashes, funky eyeliner patterns, and white or colored eyeliner on the eyelids. Black mascara has always been the most popular and versatile, but this year the beauty industry has shifted towards more of a bold and vibrant take. Colorful mascara and eyeshadow is a new style that really expresses individual identity and makes a statement. Some are solely wearing a colorful mascara with no other eye makeup, while others go all out and do a matching eyeshadow and mascara for a striking look. The ideas are endless - it’s fun to test things out and have fun with makeup; plus it’s an easy fix if you change your mind. The TV show Euphoria, which was a huge hit last year has also helped set the scene for an influx of glittery, colorful eye makeup. These looks are great to pair with a monochrome or neutral loungewear look to make a bright statement or also as a great contrast with other colors in your outfit. Colors such as blue, green, or pink are the perfect accent for spring and summer to add to your look. Depending on your eye color, certain colors may look best. According to L’Officiel, brown eyes pair well with a purple or green mascara and green eyes work well with purple and pink to help accentuate the green. Makeup is an art and with it comes unique design; for some it’s a passion and form of self expression or personality, while for others it’s just a way to feel confident and try something new. These new trends this year are playful, full of life and fun. Experiment away!

Volunteering in Wilmington

WRITTEN by Kailee Hooks DESIGNED by Jordan Mays

While volunteering is all good and grand, learning how to volunteer at a sustainable level takes things to a whole other level. Agencies that spur sustainable volunteering are ones that promote long-term solutions for those in need, not just throwing money at them. Two new agencies in Wilmington that are doing just this and deserve to be highlighted are Northside Food Co-Op and Eden Village.

Northside Food Co-op is an organization starting in Wilmington that plans to address the problem of food deserts in the community. Driving around Wilmington, it is hard to realize that food deserts exist amongst all the Harris Teeter’s and Trader Joe’s. Food deserts are areas where people have limited access to healthy foods, and more than likely they are in low-income areas. One of the best things about Northside Co-op, which will be located at the Northside of Downtown Wilmington, is that it is community-owned. Organizations owned by the community are beneficial as they allow for more direct input of the needs for those it intends to serve as well as job opportunities, they actually allow the people they are serving to have a voice. The goals outlined on the company website are to provide job security, create jobs, improve the economy, keep it local, and empower the community through local ownership.

The story of Northside Co-op is a powerful one, one of addressing needs that desperately needed to be met and were voiced over and over by the community. The Northside Community received two broken promises in 1996 and 2003 that the grocery

store they desired would be built. However, fifteen years down the road there is still no grocery store in Northside Wilmington. This is what Northside Co-Op desires to address, to mend the broken trust between the community and Wilmington government, and provide them with the basic human right of healthy and obtainable food.

Another incredible agency starting in Wilmington is Eden Village. Eden Village is going to be a community of tiny homes for persons who are experiencing homelessness. Homelessness is an epidemic and with anti-homeless structures going up but little effort to assist those who are experiencing homelessness, Eden Village is going to be a wonderful place to provide shelter to those who are in need. The village will consist of 32 tiny home units that will be offered to those who are chronically homeless which includes patients from hospitals. With an estimated 100 persons who are chronically homeless living in Pender, Brunswick, and New Hanover County, Eden Village will be able to serve as a place of security and community for these individuals. –Learning how to become sustainable with your volunteering, whether local or abroad, truly ups the game. If you want to get involved in any of these amazing organizations and become more in tune with the communities around you, follow their social media or go to their websites and contact them for great opportunities to volunteer.–
