3. No Reports from Committee 5. Financials – Joe Murray Explained the disproportionate expenditures as was dictated by the structure as an incorporated association. Gordon Stalley – explained the need to consolidate and keep a tight reign on finances. To this end, it is suggested a financial committee be formed to assist in the transparency of reporting and setting in place efficient reporting systems. It is not the role of the financial committee to tell the club how it should be run but rather offer support and advice. Nominations for committee to assist financial director – as per attached motion. Chris Blakeway, Gordon Stalley, Dan Ryan and Spike Jones. Meeting to be convened by above to establish parameters of what the committee will do (also in consultation with executive committee).

Avoca Boys showing their true colours Page 4

Dan Ryan – suggested to show budget breakdown in Annual Report. Also suggested that reports and notes of explanation be included for abnormal accounts and entries. Roger Johnson – asked if an accrual system could work better than a cash based system – Joe Murray to look into it. Spike Jones/Brett Beswick 6. Election of Office Bearers for 2010/2011 Chairperson Garry Clarke Vice Chairperson House John Mitchell Vice Chairperson SP Events Wendy Norman Director of Administration Deb Rendall Director of Finance Joe Murray Director of Life Saving Brett Beswick Director of Competition Matt Mitchell Director of Youth Activities Murray Tancred Board of Life Saving Education Officer Craig Anderson First Aid Officer Karen Douglas IRB Captain Stuart Paterson Vice Captain Peter Saint Surf Sports Board Captain Daniel McClelland Water Captain Darren Clarke Ski Captain Lachlan Tame Carnival Entries Gordon Jones Boat Captain Warwick Pearce Beach Captain Robert Cairncross assisted by Anne Stalley and Jess Ryan Masters Captain Jeff Smith House Committee Bar Manager Howard Jones Functions Manager Joe Murray Building & Maintenance John Robins Additions Member House Committee George Spencer Gym Manager George Spencer Radio Officer Paul Christensen Surfboard Riding Captain Craig Kelly Grievance Officer Brendon Cullen Duke of Ed John Mitchell Presentation Night Marie Ward Long Service & Life Members Committee Andy Hoban, Mike Tamblyn, Graham Love, Bryce Norman, Murray Braund, Garry Clarke, Deb Rendall

Chris Hayes – Patrol Captain

Sharon Brierty Bob Dorrell accepted for Kerry Worrell

Mick Foley – suggested winter rate for functions be offered due to lack of bookings during the colder months.

• This decision was made (Matt Jones head coach $12,000) and as such the executive cannot go back on that decision • Garry questioned the validity of this particular topic being appropriate for an AGM discussion. Head Coach KPI’s include:• Time on beach • Development program • Innovations • Carnivals attended

Quentin Riley – voiced concerns over hot showers.

• Satisfaction surveys

Garry Clarke advised that hot showers are now on but it takes time for the hot water to come through.

• Results • Retention and recruitment.

8. Bryce Norman Medal

Matt Mitchell – spoke on behalf of active and competitive members and said that the resounding voice was the need for a professional structure and a head coach.

Medal to be struck ‘the Bryce Norman medal’ for clubman of the year. Mick Kendal/Wayne Fuller Motion Passed Craig Anderson – asked that the new committee look into wireless internet. Also Bronze Medallion price increase to be a matter of discussion for new financial committee. Quentin Riley – spoke about Anita Jung and her valued contribution to the club and he hoped she would remain active with the club in the future. Dan Ryan – asked that payment (nominal) for storage of skis and boards be implemented. Ballot Papers – all ballot papers to be destroyed. George Spencer – gym roof is under consideration – at this point in time it is not budgeted and will not proceed (for the time being).

Quentin Riley – spoke about the need for transparency however felt an AGM was not the proper forum to address money issues. Dan Ryan – made the point that the new head coach was an employee and as such must be paid market value. Nigel Tebb – indicated that the rate of pay ($12,000) is indeed local going market value rate. Bob Dorrell – voiced his opinion that money is the root of all evil, however, he feels that we should let the executive do what they were elected to do. He would also like to get back to the basics of Surf Lifesaving. Closed 12.55pm.

Head Coach/Club Coaches Richard Brierty – voiced concerns over allocation of money towards coaching, he agreed with the need of a club coach but not the allocation of $12,000 per annum. Murray Tancred – spoke about the Forum that was held and open to all members to have input into new coaching structures. Garry Clarke – feedback from the committee that was formed as a result of the forum was to employ a paid head coach and the following breakdown was discussed at the forum:• $7,000 sponsorship (for coaching) • $6,000 from additional sponsors • $8,000 from beach raffles • Plus additional funds raised by competitors

Roger Johnson – Recruit of the Year

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

oc av

Joe’s role has not been restricted to finance and, along with his wife Maria, has ensured that our function facility runs effectively and profitably. They put in many hours as volunteers to provide the services that many members take for granted. Spike Jones also continues to spend many hours coordinating the bar which provides a great source of income to the club. The season also saw the change in administrator within the club with Anita finishing at the commencement of the season. Anita’s contributions over the years have established the club in a strong position with many processes set up for the future. We thank her for her efforts over the years and look forward to her future contributions as a club member. Kylie has done an admirable job in the short time she has been involved and is quickly settling into her role. It is great to see her passion to continue the role that Anita has established. Kylie has been supported by Nan Jones, Wendy Norman and Deb Rendall in doing many of the volunteer administrative duties. George, Marie and Sonya’s efforts with uniform and registration have assisted in spreading the load within the club. George’s contributions to Gym Maintenance is also worthy of mention.

Brett Beswick is moulding a core group in the life saving area that will enable us to develop the area over the coming years. Murray Tancred and Deb Rendall continue to foster the growth of our Nipper Section resulting in them being one of the leading clubs in the state. Joe Murray as Director of Finance has done a great job in developing systems and procedures which we are taking on board to ensure that the club runs more professionally and continues to provide a good level of service.

The executive would like to extend thanks to all patrolling members for their efforts over the past season. Once again no lives were lost on the beach and the patrols should be proud of their contributions. The first full year of the new patrol trailer provided an excellent resource for our members and we once again would like to thank Kieran Moore and The Ladies Auxiliary for providing such an excellent facility to our club. Recognition needs to be paid to the efforts of Duncan Smith, Matt Parker, Todd Petrie, Dan Mitchell and Daniel McClelland in undertaking a major rescue after training one morning. Their efforts contributed to the mass rescue of a number of early morning swimmers. Well done. Who said boaties can’t do rescues? Our development in training and assessment continues to grow with a large number of young members contributing to the development of this arm of lifesaving. The efforts of these young men was justly recognised with Dylan Coleman awarded Patrolman of the Year and Jono Donnelly Junior Patrolman. Scott Smith’s contribution also resulted in the award of Junior Clubman of the Year. I continue to encourage the many younger members who are taking on greater leadership roles to continue their involvement in the lifesaving arm of the club. Sponsors remain the life blood of our club and their contribution allows us to maintain the services we do. A special thanks to Raine and Horne for taking on sponsorship of the boat section which needed an injection of funds. This enables us to maintain the large numbers who form this arm of the club. It was a pity that the relationship with George Brand was not able to be retained at this stage but we look forward to future relationships should they be able to be involved. Premier Fire Services also provide outstanding assistance to our club and their support is valued. I would like to thank our other sponsors who are acknowledged in the front of our annual report and encourage all members to support their organisations.

Central Coast Branch continues support of clubs on the coast and Energy Australia as the major Sponsor of Central Coast Surf Life Saving also provides tremendous assistance. Our Branch maintains their position as one of the leading Branches in the country.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT cont.

Avoca also had a number of competitors gain selection in NSW teams: Brad McCloghry, Bianca Mould, Jake O’Brien, Zenith Boat Crew, Aaron Benson (NSW 23’s ).

While we did not have large numbers of masters contest events this year there were still some great results. At the World titles in Egypt Dave O’Grady, Doug Jorgensen, Greg Cook and Jeff Smith all achieved Gold and at Aussies Ben Hamilton and Corey Meyers were Aussie Champs. Brett Beswick and Craig Anderson continue to develop a strong lifesaving arm. Karen Douglas once again has undertaken the role of first aid officer keeping the facility well prepared. Our group of trainers and assessors has maintained its growth from last year and we once again thank Mick Kendal, Andy Hoban, Craig Anderson, Jeff Barnes, Dylan Coleman, Scott Smith, Jono Donnelly, Lee Dean and Garry Clarke for their efforts. The committee thanks all members for giving up their time to carry out the variety of volunteer duties in particular patrols. It has been pleasing this year that members continue to organise substitutes on most occasions when unable to attend which ensured we were able to provide required levels at all patrols. Once again I encourage all to do more awards and improve your lifesaving capabilities. Since the last report we have had the sad loss of Sandy Mitchell, wife of Vice President John and a long time member of the Ladies Auxiliary. This was a sad time for the club but a chance to celebrate the life of a lovely lady and great family woman. Fred Spindler once again did an outstanding job in organising the club door knock and we will be looking for someone to take over the role in the coming season. The Golf day, run by Glen O’Brien and Keith Ferrier was again a success and proved to be a very enjoyable day. Con and Marg Ryan, through their association with PAKS have been a great support in providing prizes that we can use at these events. As usual our Ladies Auxiliary have been outstanding supporters of the club and continue to provide the services that allow us to have many of the social activities and formal functions. Fiona and Dave’s efforts in producing the best annual report available around clubs should be applauded as there are many hours of work.

Last season was a letdown due to the cancelling of the National Titles but this season saw the opportunity for fullscale competition. The results were probably the best ever by the club especially at a National Level. It was fantastic to see the club outperform even the strong Queensland clubs to win 2 of the major team events at the carnival. The efforts in winning the Lifesaver Relay by over 3 minutes establishes the club as one of the strongest all round clubs in Australia. This was followed up with a comprehensive win in the boat relay to further our claims as the strongest boat club in Australia at present. Except for some bad luck close to shore it could have been a third team Gold with the Ski Relay run down to finish 3rd. There were a number of other outstanding results during the season as can been seen in the results within the annual report. Riley Fitzsimmons as State Board Champion and 2nd at Aussies, Michael Bain 2nd State in 2 divisions and then achieving Gold at Nationals in 17yrs. Kaitlyn, Amy and Cody-Leigh all achieving medals at both State and Nationals. U19yrs Boat Crew achieving silver at Aussies after unluckily slewing on the winning wave. Brad McLoghry and Luke Pearce also winning medals at both titles. Our new members Trent Martin and Corey Meyers settled in well and contributed a great deal to the enthused effort of the club. After many years without an open individual Gold at Aussies, Avoca were able to celebrate the outstanding win of Lachlan Tame in the ski. Lachlan was also rewarded with selection in The Australian U23 team in kayaking. On the Beach Bianca Mould completed an undefeated season in flags, taking out Branch, Inter-Branch, State Inter-state and Aussies. Bianca also achieved Gold in U15 sprint at Aussies to add to her silver from State. Truly an outstanding effort.

Garry Clarke, President – Avoca Beach SLSC

Director of administration

We are fortunate to be part of a positive growth period, but of course this does not happen naturally. The extraordinary efforts of many, working towards common goals, have contributed to the achievements that we enjoy. I believe that Avoca Beach has developed the right recipe for operating a successful surf club that its members and the community can be proud of. I have enjoyed working with the Board this past year and look forward to many more to come. Thank you to Garry Clarke whose tireless work really does go unrewarded. To the rest of the Board thanks for all your hard work this season and assistance to me when required, John Mitchell, Wendy Norman, Joe Murray, Brett Beswick, Matt Mitchell and Murray Tancred. I also thank Kylie, our Office Administrator, your contribution has been fantastic and next year will be a breeze. Finally, thank you to all the members, their families and friends for the support and contributions they provide. The volunteer spirit is alive and well at Avoca Beach. Deb Rendall, Director of Administration – Avoca Beach SLSC

A special mention must go out to all our Masters Patrol members. A lot of these members have been involved for many years, and continue to put back into the club that gave them so much in their younger years. Many others also joined later in life with their children being involved through nippers or seniors. Approximately 70% of our patrol membership is made up of masters (over 30). I think this is an amazing statistic and one which all members must be proud of. I can’t thank our masters patrol members enough for the efforts they put into their patrols each season. Their dedication to patrols is exemplary, and many of our younger patrol members could learn a thing or two about responsibility and commitment from them. These members come into their own around March – April whilst everyone is away at State and Aussies. Our beach is extremely busy these days and it's vital we fulfil our patrol obligations and if we can’t make a patrol, we get a suitable substitute. Gordon Jones took on the role of Patrol Captain this year which was extremely pleasing to have Gordo share his wealth of experience with our younger members and bolster the patrol ranks. Thanks Gordo, you’re a busy man but your help this season was much appreciated, likewise in Brad Scott. Brad answered an SOS call when the Kelly patrol folded and Craig Kelly himself was unable to keep his patrol together. Brad put his hand up and along with some other exceptional members doubled up and kept the patrol going. Thanks to Bradley’s wife and kids too for their support. Brad was also assisting Killcare SLSC with patrols there as well, and his efforts are well and truly appreciated.

Thank you to all the members who have patrolled our beach and kept us safe for another year. Congratulations to all members who have competed for our club, outstanding results this year in all sections.

This past season has again seen Avoca Beach SLSC leading the way in lifesaving. Our valuable patrol members have again fulfilled their obligations and ensured that Avoca Beach remains a safe place to swim between the flags. Our dedicated Patrol Captains have led by example and special mention must be made to all of our patrol captains who ensure their patrol teams and resources are managed effectively.

This annual report is presented at a time when Avoca Beach SLSC has enjoyed a safe season on our beach and a strong representation in the competition arena. Once again Avoca Beach had a large membership and many volunteers for jobs to be done and helping out where required.

DIRECTOR OF LIFESAVING

Congratulations to all awardees from our recent presentation, it was pleasing to see such a great turnout to celebrate our achievements. Congratulations on the season’s efforts and let's encourage even more people to be involved next year.

DIRECTOR OF LIFESAVING cont. I won’t harp on this any longer but all members should be aware the Patrol Captain of the day is in charge of the beach. If you are directed by the Patrol Captain to a role, or to wear your patrol uniform etc and you fail to heed that direction your membership will be reviewed. Lifesaving is our core business and why we exist today. Each active member has an obligation to fulfil their patrol commitments. We have a long and proud history of patrolling Avoca Beach. To have long time members complain about the lack of commitment and poor attitude of younger members is disturbing, and could lead to disciplinary action or suspension. On a positive note, it is very pleasing to have new young members passionate about lifesaving. With mentors like Craig Anderson, Mick Kendal, Andy Hoban, Garry Clarke and Jeff Barnes, the Junior ranks are well and truly building which is a sign of the dedication these trainers put into the club. This season our trainers were joined by some new trainers (and older) with Dylan Coleman, Alex Tomlin, Jono Donnelly and Scott Smith all taking on not just bronze squads, but ARC and IRB. This core of young men, are the future of our club and they are doing great things for Lifesaving, which was reflected in the Lifesaving results at our annual presentation night. Great result for Jono Donnelly picking up the Junior Patrolperson of theYear and Dylan Coleman the Senior Patrolman of theYear. Their passion is contagious and they have been vital to Avoca keeping our beach open with many volunteer patrols when we were very light on patrol numbers. Guys, I can’t thank you enough, great job again this year. The surprise packet of the season was the ever young Sharon Brierty teaming up with…wait for it…wait for it…yes, husband Richard to train their son Duke and mates for their bronze medallions. This was refreshing to see and I’m sure Richard got as much enjoyment out of it as the boys did. Sharon has always put back into the club and continues to volunteer her time. Again this season Sharon with Jules Mitchell again assisted The Entrance SLSC with patrolling their beach to help that club rebuild their patrol numbers. Well done girls.

to keeping our beaches safe and supporting our patrols. To all our 100% patrol attendance members, I can’t begin to thank you enough. You are the backbone of our club and the members every patrol captain wants on their patrol. Actually, many are patrol captains! Guys, a huge effort. Well Done and thank you. They are: Craig Anderson, Robert Annabel, Dave Babbage, Jeff Barnes, Sharon Brierty, Michelle Butler, Greg Byrne, Scott Champion, Paul Christensen, Garry Clarke, Lindsay Cunningham, Denise De Paoli, Andrew Deurden, Rochelle Deurden, Matt Dignam, Johnathon Donnelly, Karen Douglas, Natalie Gathercole, Ian Gillespie, Phil Henry, Dan Jefferies, Roger Johnson, Steve Jung, John Laing, Andrew Lawler, Nicholas Malone, Vince Malone, Kaitlyn Matuschka, Brad McCloghry, Craig McCloghry, Alan Moffitt, Kieran Moore, Tom Morrow, Bianca Mould, Brian Munton, Joe Murray, Maria Murray, David O’Grady, Lisa Pearce, Matt Penn, Jessica Redden, Matthew Richards, Joey Ristuccia, John Robins, Max Sainsbury, Peter Saint, Brad Scott, Emily Smith, Gordon Stalley, Nick Stylinou, Greg Tobin, Mathew Walter, Tony Wilson, Ian Wiseman, Brittany Woodman. Patrol Excellence is those patrol members who attended all their rostered patrols without any substitutes. This is a fantastic achievement and I congratulate the following members, Graham Ball, Nigel Ball, Tony Bennett, Dylan Coleman, Don Cook, Lee Dean, Chris Haves, Gary Hore, Andrew Parker, Pauline Priest, Stan Priestly, Jessica Redmond, Quentin Riley, Larissa Shelton, Scott Smith, George Spencer, Trevor Tame. Junior Lifesaver of the Year went to Jono Donnelly Lifesaver of the Year went to Dylan Coleman Recruit of the Year went to Roger Johnson and Rookie of the year went to Sam Hutchison. Both these members contributed to the clubs success in many ways and I thank them both for their efforts this season. Patrol of the year this year went to the Tom Morrow patrol, which included young guns Dylan Coleman, Jono Donnelly, Scott Smith and Alex Tomlin. Other members

Many members contribute in many ways and it’s timely to recognise the efforts of our club SurfCom operators who did rostered patrols in SurfCom providing valuable communication support to our Branch as well as Hunter and Lower North Coast Branches. They were Stuart Harvey, Susan Thomas, Greg Collins, Lisa Pearce, Geoff Morrison and Chris Tasker. Our club members also held positions within Branch as RWC Operators, being Dan Ryan, Peter Saint, Stuart Harvey, Brett Beswick, Kieren Moore, Corey Myers and Greg Collins with Stuart Harvey, Brett Beswick and Greg Collins also being Branch Duty Officers and Directors of the Branch. Well done to all and thanks for your dedication

Hope to see everyone back next season for a bigger and better season in 2011/2012.

Our equipment wouldn’t be up to the high standard without the efforts of the Board of Lifesaving:- Karen Douglas (First Aid), Dave Babbage (IRB), Craig Anderson (Chief Instructor) and Peter Saint (Vice Captain). A huge thanks to you all. The club owes you a lot of gratitude for your continued efforts assisting with keeping our club operational within lifesaving. A huge thank you to our sponsors in Lifesaving being Kincumber Village for the IRB section and AB SLSC Ladies Auxiliary and Air-Pak Sheet Metal for the donation of our vital Patrol Trailer. Your support has been overwhelming and I thank all club sponsors for your support again this year.

My wife Leanne and family have been incredibly supportive of my involvement with Avoca and Branch for which I am truly grateful. Avoca Beach SLSC is very close to my heart and I get as much out as I put in, and appreciate the support of my Family and the Club Executive in helping me fulfil my responsibilities this season. Finally congratulations to my vice captain Peter Saint in being recognised for his efforts and contributions to AB SLSC by picking up the Clubman of the Year and the first recipient of the Bryce Norman Medal. A thoroughly well deserved accolade for Peters continued hard work for our club. Last but not least to our President, Garry Clarke. Many members would have no idea how much time and effort Garry puts into our club. With regular meetings within the club, Branch, sponsors,

DIRECTOR OF FINANCE This report cannot commence without taking time to acknowledge and thank Anita Jung for the fantastic work that she did in the finance area as the club’s Administration Assistant over quite a number of years. Anita worked to an impeccable standard, putting in much of her time as a volunteer rather than paid officer to achieve this. While it is said that no one is irreplaceable it must be noted that we will be wondering for a long time, “What is this about? How was that done? Where did this go? Who did this” and always come back to the same answer. Anita took care of this. This is why we appreciate her willingness to assist us in our change phase. Welcome also to Kylie Micklethwaite who is endeavoring the monumental task of following Anita. We appreciate Kylie’s willingness to learn and find out what is going on. On the issue of the club’s financial position I believe we have come to a point where we have to answer some fairly serious questions about what we want from our club as we are still continuing to overspend. While this year we rained in spending and ended with a small surplus it hides the fact that we will have to take some hard and possibly unpopular decisions going forward. There are three major cost areas that we will have to work on. These are the on cost of the senior competitors, the cost of maintaining the premises going forward and the cost to the club of the use of the captain’s office and the first-aid room as change room, public area and general playroom. While competitors largely fund their own personal costs the club funds support competition in areas such as coaching, rep team levies, water safety at Aussies and in 2010/2011

Special Rescue Recipients Matt Parker, Dan Mitchell, Duncan Smith and Todd Petrie

the excess of competition entries over and above that funded by the competitors levy. The difference here cost the club in excess of $20,000 in the 2010/2011 season. This does not include assisting members with the purchase of boards and skis for competition. The other area of concern is the preparedness of the club to meet future expenses. The building is now over 5 years old and requires ongoing maintenance that is increasingly expensive. While the club has always shown a figure in its books for depreciation this is a non-cash entry to show the loss of value in an asset it does not provide us with money. Such action in accounting is for tax purposes or to give businesses a general understanding of their total worth. I believe we need to create reserve funds with actual cash in them for meeting future expenditure. In other words we pay now for our use of the club’s assets so that those in the future do not have to struggle to find the funds for replacement, etc. While the club expects to get in excess of $200,000 from functions and rentals and about $75,000 from nippers in the 2011/2012 season this will only meet just under 70% of our projected $400,000 plus outgoings. We need to consider seriously where the money is coming from, in particular sponsorship which has lagged steadily over the last few years, especially since the global financial crisis bit into business confidence. It is hoped that now that the SLSA have backed away from their discussions to impose a standardised chart of accounts the club’s finance committee can meet and become active in the serious work of taking us forward in the financial area. Joe Murray, Director of Finance – AB SLSC

A donation of $1,250 from Avoca Beach Cellars and another $200 from John Cheedle adding to a total raised of $2,869.00. A great day! Many thanks to Glen O’Brien and Keith Ferrier for their great organisational skills and ongoing support. A HUGE THANK YOU to AVOCA BEACH CELLARS for their fantastic support of Avoca Beach Surf Club. Annual Door Knock Appeal, 7th 8th, 9th January 2011 Many thanks to the skills of Fred Spindler to organise such a massive Fund Raising Event. The weekend was successful in raising $11,984.70. There were many people involved to make this a success from the collectors, the organisers and most importantly the money counters. So a big THANK YOU to everyone involved. CC Branch Masters, Senior & Junior Championships held at Avoca, 12th & 13th February 2011 This was a very successful weekend where all club members worked together to host these carnivals. Our Masters, Seniors, Juniors, Patrol members, Ladies Auxiliary, First Aid, Life members etc. banded together to cover the great range of jobs that needed to be done, in order for these carnivals to fun smoothly. Fortunately the weather was okay and a moderate sea was running.

The Club hosted the Branch Championships again this season, thanks to everyone that helped with setup, pull down, first aid and BBQ. Special thanks to the club executive for all their help over the event and thank you to the Ladies Auxiliary for all the food and their efforts over the branch weekend and season. To all the officials thank you, without your efforts and assistance we would not be able to compete.

Matt Jones, the newly appointed club coach was invited to speak about his role regarding the training timetables and programmes for all club competitors and other members who were interested in improving their surf skills.

To our Boat Captain Warwick Pearce, well done for all your hard work looking after all the gear and crews. Thanks to the boat coaches/sweeps representing the club well with our crews John Mitchell, Jim Mitchell, Richard Brierty, Dave Maguire and Brad Mary Poppins Cox. Thanks very much to all our members that were boat officials.

This annual get together was held in the bar area of the club where President Garry Clarke addressed the gathering to inform the life members about the club’s progress.

To the Board Coaches – Nugget great job with the squad and Spike Jones for all his involvement and effort well done.

Special thank you to Trevor Tame and all the BBQ workers and to the Ladies Auxiliary who organised all the food for the officials and special requests for the weekend. Not only did the club provide these services but they were great fundraisers for the club. Thank you once again to all those who helped out on the weekend. Central Coast Branch were grateful for our support and we may host the branch carnivals next year. Raine & Horne/Hunters Annual Rocks to Rocks, 27th February 2011 Michael Hunter and his family once again ran a great event. Sea conditions were good with a moderate swell running. It is always a wonderful sight to watch all the swimmers assemble for the group photo prior to the swim. We thank Michael, Leslie, Garth, Brett, their families and Raine & Horne for sponsoring and hosting this great event and look forward to 2012. HOUSE & BUILDING COMMITTEE The House Committee’s job within Avoca Beach SLSC is to maintain the quality of the clubhouse for the membership. The new clubhouse is now in its sixth year of operation so the building is starting to show some wear and tear and there is a constant need for maintenance. This is a struggle against the elements of the beach environment and those who treat our facilities with. We would like to ask that all members not share their pin codes as we find non members using the facilities which in turn costs us money. We have found this to be the case particularly with the hot water in the showers and people using the Captain’s office as a change room. On a positive note thanks to all the people who have given their time to help around the club, in particular, Rob Davis, Eddie Baker, George Spencer, Bob Dorrell, Gary Lowe, Spike Jones and John Robins.

FUNCTIONS The functions are continuing to provide a steady income stream for the Club. We have had a busy year with functions, nearly every Saturday night from September to May were booked out with weddings. The week day bookings are starting to increase for small conferences and meeting places away from the workplace. Keep this in mind next time your organisation needs a place for a conference. We are looking forward to another busy year with most weekends over the summer months fully booked. This consistency with functions means that the facilities of our club are being well maintained to be able to attract the money that people pay for weekend hire. This benefits the club and all its members in having such a terrific and clean venue. Our club is one of the most successful function clubs on the Coast and a large part of the attraction is the design of the function room. The size of our function room allows us to seat 250 people combined with the separate bar area and large veranda areas ensures our success. To gain the success that we have had so far has rested on a few shoulders and it is time to encourage others to join our team and share the load. We would like to move ahead with the function side of the club by introducing a team of both volunteers and paid workers so we do not ‘burn out’ our existing volunteers and ultimately provide our customers with the service that is necessary for the type of events they are holding. If you are interested in being part of this new and exciting team please contact Kylie in the office on office@ avocabeachslsc.asn.au

Thanks to Don Cook for his efforts in training and re-qualifying many candidates in Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate. Well done Donny! This season saw several members gain IRB driver and crewman training and a big thanks to Jono Donnelly for his efforts in that training and thanks also to Jeff Barnes and Rob Davis for their time in the duckies. All of the training carried out this year has been coordinated at the paperwork end in the office by Kylie who has done a great job for the club. Thanks Kylie. Another season has come to a close with the auxiliary continuing to support our club wherever needed. It was a much quieter year as far as our fundraising goes but we did raise approximately $7000. Fundraisers 1. BBQ’s were our main fundraiser, tallying approximately $4000. It was down considerably from last season due to us not doing Nipper/Junior nights. We appreciate all members who voluntarily gave their time to fulfill the Sippers Kitchen roster and assist the club at Sunday Night Sippers. We especially thank all members and friends who did the BBQ cooking each week. Their invaluable help and time is much appreciated as it adds to our BBQs running well. This is one of the club’s main weekly social events and a combined effort from the Ladies Auxiliary is necessary. Thank you to Nan Jones (Director of BBQs) for taking on the job this season. It requires hard work to have everything run smoothly and efficiently and at the same time, please everyone. Thank you to Margie who is always there to assist Nan. 2. Other fundraisers were from the sale of Lamingtons which raised $1000. Margie, Gail and the girls were always on the job. Australia Day was its usual success with the only hiccup being somebody stole the National Flag. 3. Our raffle, donated by Jan Dorrell, raised $750. Thanks to all who sold their tickets.

Smith, Jono Donnelly, Matt Williams and Alex Tomlin. These boys carried out instruction and training for most of the season assisting several bronze squads to achieve their goals and receive bronze medallions.

Ladies Auxiliary cont. Club Assistance Our biggest effort this season was assisting the club to cater for the Senior, Masters and Junior Branch Championship carnivals held at Avoca. The organisation was done by our President Jan Gee and greatly supported by our members. The weekend was a huge success with Chad Griffiths representing the Branch, thanking us for providing lunches, snacks, etc for the official and working groups. We also catered for the Annual Lifeguard Challenge between Wyong and Gosford Councils plus the Annual Rocks To Rocks run by Michael Hunter. THANKYOU We would like to acknowledge and thank the following for their continued support for our club: • TJ’S FRUIT MART KINCUMBER (Justin & Ava) • PETER’S MEATS ERINA FAIR • Lisa and Wendy for the emails and newsletters • Sewing ladies for club gear • Joe and Maree Murray for their great cooperation and help • Anita Jung for all her past support • Graham Love for photos • Fiona and Dave for producing this report • Jackie Thurlow for her past work as the previous Director of BBQs. The social committee never quite got off the ground this season but have assured us that they will be up and running for next season. The Christmas party and end of season get together were most social. Friday lunches are still happening on the first Friday of every month. Contact Margie for venues. We were happy to assist with the catering for the Love and Mitchell families for their sad loss. Sandy was a

Ladies Auxiliary member in the early days and we all miss her very much. The ladies voted to contribute to the Finance Management Plan set up by the senior club and to be reviewed each year at our AGM. Our pledge this season was $20,000. It was disappointing for the Ladies Auxiliary to note that the senior club still hasn’t arranged a small ceremony date for the patrol trailer co-sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary and Air-Pak. Our contribution was $8,500. Avoca Beach has once again excelled in all competition areas: Master, Seniors and Juniors and at all levels: Branch, State and Australian. The Ladies Auxiliary is very proud of the Club’s achievements and would like to congratulate all our competitors and medal winners. We are especially proud of the Juniors ranking 4th overall in NSW. The Ladies Auxiliary sadly lost three members this season. Mary McDonald, Helen Pickett and ‘our own little’ Sandy Mitchell. All three were great supporters of our club over many years. Discussions were held during the season about several issues regarding ways to improve the image of the Ladies Auxiliary and their work. In order to address these issues, could you please complete the questionnaire which will be sent out prior to the Ladies Annual General Meeting. Our aim is to better inform the general club members and the public as to the work we do and why we do this work. President Jan Gee and the Executive would like to thank all the girls for always being there to help whenever needed during the season and we hope to see you all back again next year… When, we will be supporting the BLUE, GREEN & GOLD of Avoca Surf Club. GYM REPORT

Well yet again another great season for AB SLSC and again another great season for the Board section. Firstly I would like to thank those who assisted with coaching and the transportation of craft to and from the carnivals. A special thank you to Matt Jones who assisted myself with the board program. Matt’s advice and guidance to all involved in the board paddling sector was much appreciated, it would be great to see Matt involved in the club for some years to come. Also thanks to Spike who also assisted with coaching.

Daniel McClelland (Nugget), Board Captain – AB SLSC

This year has been another year of improvement to our excellent facility. We finally introduce a fourth Concept 2 Rower and we replaced our ageing four Spin Cycles with much more modern models. Additionally we purchased a set of kettle bells to enable variation in workouts. We had ordered our 45° Leg Press but were unable to collect it on time, which resulted in the unit being sold to another surf club in Sydney. However, with a new supply on its way to Sydney and with a promise from Gordo to assemble the machine, we should have it in place by the time you read this report. Again, I would like to express my sincere thanks to Rod Power and Grant Russell for their selfless assistance with the maintenance of the Gym over the past 12 months. As with previous years I would like to remind members of those rules of our Gym which are regularly broken: 1. Gym shoes must be worn at all times 2. Wipe sand from your shoes on the mats provided 3. Put equipment away at the conclusion of your visit 4. Use a towel on benches for your own safety and that of your club mates. Last year we reupholstered every piece of covering on the benches. Within days a bench was torn when someone dropped a weight on it. Makes you wonder… eh? We continue to find children and non-members in the Gym. If you find such folk in our Gym, please take the time to ask them to leave or pay to join. We intend to continue our aim to have a roof constructed over the outside area. Again, our members have offered to provide the labour if the Club provides the material. We will finish the year with about $4,000 in funds which I have applied to be directed to the roof over the courtyard rather than on new equipment. See you in the Gym. In the opens both Aaron Benson and Trent Martin showed to be the form paddlers of the state throughout the whole 2011 season but were very unlucky in the State and Aussies finals. The form these guys were in this season assisted the taplin, board and lifesaver relays achieve some outstanding results. It was also great to see Josh Barnes show his true potential on the board with some very good form throughout the season. It is easy to say that Josh will be pushing for an open taplin and board relay position next season.

ab

It was so great to see the youth of the board section achieve some outstanding results this season. As you will see in the results section of this report there were some outstanding performances at the Branch, State and Australian titles. These results confirm the dedication and potential in our junior squad. It is a strong indication that our club is in safe hands for the future. Riley, Brad, Amy, Kaitlyn, Cody-Leigh and Luke are stars of the future. These competitors will form the basis of our Taplin and Board Relays for years to come.

WATER REPORT The 2010/2011 season has seen the continued progression of Avoca’s Robson Civil Engineering Water Section. With improved competition results and far more involvement in the swimming aspects of training and competition, this season has been very enjoyable to be a part of. One of the most pleasing aspects of this season is the growth of the Gosford Gropers Swim Squad – proudly owned and run by Avoca competitors (you only have to pay for pool entry). Whilst there remains mornings where a lone soldier makes it to the pool only to return home and hit the pillow, the majority of sessions have seen the Gosford pool stacked with past and present, old and young, male and female – Avoca competitors. A special thanks to Chris Parker, Chris Turner and Trent Martin for assisting in preparing great training sessions throughout the season. I also encourage other members of the club to drop in one morning and give it a go. Another aspect of this season that has been very beneficial is the integration of swimming training into the Surf Club training regime. The communication between each of the coaches has been very helpful in developing a program that encourages greater participation of club members and ensures coaches have a better understanding of each person’s training workload and specific requirements. A big congratulations to all our club coaches, members are sure to reap the benefits of the systems put in place for many years to come. Whilst the success of the swim squad might not currently match that of other disciplines within the club, the results in competition this year indicate the depth of Avoca’s swimmers as it continues to grow. One of the greatest pleasures you can experience as a coach is watching young members continue to develop their skills and apply themselves as best they can. At this years NSW State titles, there was no individual more deserving of a medal than Rob Annabel. Rob’s bronze medal in the U17 Swim was the perfect example of how continued dedication and hard training can produce results that were somewhat

Page 28

unattainable for so long. Awesome effort. If only he was able to attend Aussies! Whilst there were no individual results at the NSW or Australian titles, there were some incredible results in team and multi-disciplinary events involving the ‘string set of cans’. In particular Chris ‘Kurrawa’ Parker, the bodybashing specialist was influential in helping Avoca win the prestigious Lifesaver Relay at the Australian titles and also pulled out a purple ribbon (4th place) in the Restricted Surf Race and 5th in the Open Belt Race. But I did not notice any pre-race underwater screams this year to pump himself up? Brad McCloghry and Amy Annabel also did the swim squad proud in teaming up with Riley Fitzgibbon and Kaitlyn Matuschka in their board rescue events. The girls managed to bring home a bronze at the Australian titles whilst the boys secured gold at the NSW titles and 6th at the Australian titles. Our ironman ranks were well represented this year in the Open area with Aaron Benson and Trent Martin both making the NSW Final and Trent ending up an incredible 6th in the Open Ironman at the Australian titles. Overall, the season has again been a successful one for Avoca. The aim next year is to integrate surf skill sessions back into the program and start sneaking a few medals in those Cameron and Taplin relay events on the back of strong swimming performances. And here’s hoping the Howard Jones Surf Reel we ordered two years ago is available for next year’s competition! Cheers, Darren Clarke (Dash), Water Captain – AB SLSC

BOAT CAPTAINS REPORT Another year has passed and the 2010/2011 season saw 15 crews ready to take on the hard yards that were ahead of them. Unfortunately there were 5 crews that dropped out throughout the year leaving ten, a nice even number to look after. It also saw two new Junior crews make their debut, the Grease Monkeys and The Avoca Crabs. The

The Avoca Crabs weren’t to be left out, these young blokes swept by Jimmy Mitchell had a bit of a slow start to the season, but by the end they were only just behind the Grease Monkeys. Keep it together for next season boys you are only going to get better.

We had two 23 girls crews start the year, one being the old Bambina’s crew who were looking good on the water but work commitments and other things forced them to pull out which was a shame, this left the Avoca Havoc crew, a new crew swept by a new sweep, Dave Maguire (who also rows for the Zippers). Dave has done a great job with these young girls, the four girls have the talent and the drive after their first year of rowing together, all you have to do is stay together for the goals ahead of you. We now come to the masters section of the boats, one ladies and three mens, the Zuluz (or the old girls sorry Deni) had good results in what they competed in throughout the year, they won the Peters Series, ran 2nd at State and ended up with a silver at the Aussies, overall a great effort.

This year also saw the Open Men’s crew back, two from the old Z crew (old bull) and two from last year’s Japeyes (young bull). The boys worked hard together throughout the year and there results do tell you that they were in the top ten, hope that you boys keep together for the coming year it would be a shame to lose you.

The Zippers, well these guys really try hard and towards the end of the season you could see the improvement in their rowing. It’s a shame that they really never had a consistent sweep during the year because I really think they could be at the pointy end in their division, never mind boys you did better this year at the Aussies (better than 200 metres) three races in fact.

The Zeniths had things to prove this year, I think most of it was with those Curly girls, but it was always going to be there last year in the boat as a crew. Their conversations under the tent were always entertaining, well they were to

The Silvertails have had an up and down year with not a lot of rowing during the year but trying to make the major carnivals like State and Aussies. The boys made the final at State and after turning the cans were leading by at least

We can’t forget the other multiple gold winners like Johnny Mitchell, Jimmy Mitchell and those Tweakers. Also all the others that have Aussie gold, it just goes to show you how dedicated and driven all of you are to succeed in this crazy sport we call surfboat rowing.

Johnny Mitchell’s Munjas have had their typical year, I have called them part time rowers from time to time, but they have fun and the speed that boat moves along at is quite amazing. They were stiff at State not to win the final and it’s a pity that you didn’t row at Aussies because the conditions at Kurrawa really would have suited the way you blokes row.

ab

First in the Lifesaver relay (a first for the club), first in the boat relay and second in the U19s, not a bad effort for Duke Brierty’s first Aussies, 2 gold 1 silver. Ben Shine 2 gold (no 4), Rory Grinham 2 gold, Kate Broadhurst 2 gold (no 4), John Patterson 1 gold 1 silver, Charlie Glanville 1 gold 1 silver, Rhaedan Curran 1 gold 1 silver, Rowena Bull 1 gold, (not sure on your Billy achievements), Mel Macpherson 1 gold (no 6), Julia Mitchell 1 gold (no 4), Richard Brierty 2 gold 1 silver (no 6).

me anyway, the things that I know now. One thing that I will miss is when you got into a final and just before the race Jules would grab me by the shirt and shake the crap out of me, strong little thing, be careful Nato, but truly girls you will be missed.

oc av

Grease Monkeys have been in the boat since May last year, so when it was time for their first race they were like old pro’s. Their first season together created a lot of success, they had a lot of other boat crews wondering how the hell four sixteen year olds their size could get that surfboat to move so quickly, admittedly Richard Brierty is there sweep – I guess that says it all. He trains them hard and puts a lot of time into all his crews and the results always tell the story, and the story was told at Kurrawa.

BOAT CAPTAINS REPORT cont. a boat, came through the gate cans and a mother of a wave came up from behind them and turned them over. The Aussies were much the same for the Silvertails, it was a wave that robbed them a chance to defend their title. Lucky last is the Tweakers, another crew that hasn’t rowed a lot this year bar the major carnivals, but in saying that First at Branch, State and Aussies and they finished 12th at Pacific Palms out of 20 master’s crews, not a bad effort by the old guys. The Tweakers actually rowed their final with the 240 division only because they were the only 260 crew there. It made it a 7 boat final, they got alley one which wasn’t the best alley but ran 3rd in the final and still won, how good is that. This is Mike Tamblyn’s 50th consecutive year of rowing, Kevin Bootle has close to 50 years, Andy Hoban and Bryan Low over forty years in the boat and I think a lot of those years they have been together. Now that’s a crew, congratulations to all of you for your dedication to this great sport. I found out a few years ago that Kev supposedly knows where every McDonald’s is in NSW, I believe this year he was mapping out the outlets in Queensland just as a reference. To all of our Officials not only in the boat section but overall, a big thank you for all your efforts over the season, you are a dedicated lot that deserve gold medals for the things that you do. Thank you to Uncle Joe Murray for his input on the money side of our section and also for the work that you have done with your camera taking photos. To Bobby Dorrell, you have excelled once again not only in the repair side but in totally confusing the Wollongong people in thinking that we were gay, two guys in a one bedroom apartment and me holding your hand exiting the water, not a good look. Queensland, not only did they relocate the bugger in the perfect position at Kurrawa they gave it a drying out session prior to being erected, and what an erection it was. Thank you to all those who towed boats to State and Aussies, your efforts are greatly appreciated, thank you to Gordo for doing the entries. We have a new sponsor this year Raine and Horne, thank you Michael and Brett for your support of the boat section. I know that it wasn’t one of your priorities to sponsor the boaties but we do appreciate your input. Sponsorship again has been a lacking thing, without Raine and Horne’s input towards the end of the year things in the financial department would have looked a bit grim. Hopefully next year we can get more sponsors aboard to get behind us. In closing, after four years this will be my last year as your boat captain. I am standing down but not entirely running away from it all, I will still be around to help out but I really think it is time someone else took on the challenge for awhile. Our club seems to grow from strength to strength as it showed in the Lifesaver relay this year at Kurrawa, we have a lot of talent in Avoca and we need to keep the spirit and driving force going that keeps us being the champion club that we are. Cheers, Warwick Pearce, Boat Captain (CBC) – AB SLSC

MASTERS REPORT This has probably been one of the busiest years for competition to date. The year kicked off with the World titles which were held in Alexandria, Egypt and concluded with the Australian titles at Kurrawa Beach. As usual a lot of enjoyment was had at the ‘fun’ carnivals such as Fingal Bay and Pacific Palms, where members are able to participate in much more sedate conditions and experience Masters Competition in a less serious, albeit competitive environment. Highlights of the year included the Gold medal performance of the 150 Men’s Board Relay (Greg Cook, David O’Grady, Jeff Smith) at the World titles; David O’Grady taking Gold in the 50-54 age Board final at the World titles; and Corey Meyers winning the 30-34 age group Ironman and finishing second in the Surf Race at the Australian titles. Whilst this report is about Masters Competitors it would be remiss of me not to note the appreciation by all Masters Competitors to Josh and Nick Malone. Still competing in the Open Division they were instrumental in ensuring that Masters could compete at Branch, State and Aussies by taking on the arduous role of IRB drivers. I would also like to thank the numerous other volunteers within the club that go mostly unrecognised but play a major role in ensuring we are able to attend and compete at carnivals.

ran smoothly. The weather was great with plenty of cloud cover on the first day of competition, there were plenty of deceptive waves on the day of arrival, but by the end of competition the Mediterranean was like a lake. We may have only had 8 competitors, however, we snagged a bag full of medals, 17 in total. One of the highlights of the carnival occurred in the last event of the final day of competition when the 150 Men’s Board Relay (Greg Cook, David O’Grady, Jeff Smith) team won gold. Against all odds, all three paddlers produced the paddle of their lives to win a title they had spent months training for. Other highlights included our renowned Boatie and Water competitor, Karen Douglas winning silver in Flags (with a small amount of help from our North Avoca friend); Greg Cook picking up silver in the 50-54 Men’s Sprint and Flags final; and in the 150 years Sprint Relay winning gold against some stiff opposition (Jeff Smith, Greg Cook, Doug Jorgenson). A special mention must go to the Team Manager, Anita Jung. Anita put the trip together including tours and managed all our daily issues whilst in Alexandria (and let me tell you there were many). Central Coast Branch Championship – Avoca Beach February 2011

Again, the Lizards have continued to provide great support to the Masters and bring that fun and enjoyable aspect that sometimes is lost in the heat of competition. The Lizards supplied a number of medallists this year including the Ball boys (Graham and Nigel), Murray Iles, Greg Byrne (semi Lizard) and as usual Pauline Priest.

The Branch titles were held on our home beach in some good sized swell. This year for the first time they ran the Opens and Masters Branch titles together, which robbed some of our older Open competitors the opportunity to compete in Masters. Our numbers were down this year due to numerous reasons, however, as usual we bagged a swag of medals. Highlights included Ben Hamilton winning the 30-34 Individual Ski Gold; David O’Grady winning Gold in the 50-54 Board Race and Pauline Priest winning the 55-59 years female Swim and Rescue Tube races.

NSW State Titles – Kingscliff March 2011

Avoca Beach came and conquered at Alexandria, Egypt. Despite the problems with accommodation and everything else associated with the stay, the championships themselves

Avoca placed 14th in the State which is a great effort. State is a long day of events for all competitors. Key highlights of the day included; Ben Hamilton being pipped for Gold and

Unfortunately Club Champs was a non-event this year. A busy schedule and a number of rescheduled dates did not help. Hopefully we can get back to running Club Champs with the Open’s next year and make a full day for all. This will be my final report as I will be stepping down as Master’s Captain due to my ever increasing work commitments. I would like to thank Anita Jung for her help through the last 4 years. Anita has been invaluable in stepping in and sorting out the administrative side of the role and pointing me in the right direction. I encourage all members over 30 to consider competing with the Masters. It is a good way to stay fit, meet people and to hone your life saving skills. Until next year, enjoy.

The regulars enjoyed the opportunity to have some surf fun and friendly competition on a handicap basis. This season we were very fortunate to gain the support of Avoca Sands Café as our weekly sponsor. The added incentive of winning a family meal voucher made the weekly results more exciting. We have been assured that the Avoca Sands Café will continue their sponsorship through the 2011/2012 season and we thank them for their continued support. There were some memorable duels throughout the season. The standout performer was Garth Hunter. Garth’s consistency coupled with his improvement throughout the season paid off with an overall win. Our dark horse was Roger Johnson who took out a well-deserved second place, with a very consistent and seasoned performer, Vince Malone, in third place. We encourage all members to attend and have a go next season. The Sunday Events are very low key surf lifesaving based events that allow all active members of all abilities to compete on an equal basis courtesy of our handicap system. We particularly welcome all new bronze holders to come along and join in the fun and improve their surf skills.

The events will commence on Sunday mornings at 11am. We have chosen this time to allow Nipper Parents to be involved in the Nipper Events and then have the opportunity to compete in some surf based events. John Robinson & Quentin Riley

The Sunday Morning Events were offered to all club members again this season.

The Aussies were held for the second year at Kurrawa Beach. As usual Kurrawa put on some extremely challenging conditions for the Masters. A large swell with onshore winds made for some spectacular competition. Our star performer was Corey Meyers who took Gold in the 3034 Ironman and Silver in the 30-34 Swim. A great effort by Corey who also backed up for a sixth in the 130 years Board Relay and 5th in the 110 years Taplin Relay. Ben Hamilton took Gold in the 30-34 years Ski. He seems to own this event. Other highlights included a gallant 6th by Trevor Tame and Steve Jung in the 55-59 Double Ski (the ability to stay upright all race was a reward in itself) and a gallant 5th by David O’Grady in the 50-54 Board Race. Again, David was in with a medal chance only to falter in the run up the beach.

having to settle for Silver in the 30-34 ski, Gordon Jones winning Gold in the 30-34 Men’s Rescue Tube; Greg Cook winning Gold in the 50-54 Men’s Sprint; and the 150 Men’s Board Relay (David O’Grady, Jim McAtamney, Jeff Smith) taking Silver. The Zuluz continued their impressive form – 2nd in the 160 Years Women’s Surf Boat race.

HUNTERS Rocks to Rocks Classic Swim On Sunday 26 February 2011, the 19th Annual HUNTERS Rocks to Rocks Classic Fun Swim was conducted. The week before the sea conditions were too big, but on the day, there were no hesitations, so 156 competitors enjoyed the adrenalin of the swim and the activities. Thanks to all those who helped with the setting up (Garry Clarke, Dan Ryan, David O’Grady, Wayne Ludham, Peter Saint, Craig Anderson, Eddy Baker), registering the swimmers under the Raine & Horne marquee (Jenny Bennett, Diana Short, Tina Lakes, Christine Kimberley, Anita Jung, Lesley Hunter), setting out the buoys (Rod Butler), preparing the water safety craft and taking the traditional photo (Graham Love). Thanks also to all those who didn’t swim but made sure the swimmers were safe out in the water by providing the security for all swimmers. The progress walking to North Avoca looked like Arabs crossing the desert! Times were slower this year due to the off shore currents against the swimmers returning to Avoca, nothing to do with swimming up hill or down hill back to Avoca. Most swimmers times were more than previous years. This year’s average was 32 minutes 28 seconds. The first back to Avoca was Chris Turner (20.46 mins), closely followed by the first lady, our Amy Annabel (23.15 mins), capably recorded by our time keeper Joe Murray. Dr David Little acted as the on-site doctor replacing Dr Geoff Norrie who has officiated for the last 10 years and was unavailable this year. Dr Little so loved being involved that he wants to compete next year! Thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary for again serving the BBQ to all competitors. Most enjoyable. It always makes the presentation special having our Life Members give out the Certificates (Jim Harpur, Colin

Page 34

Barker, Graham Love, Spike Jones, Larry Thorncroft, Rick Parsons, Wendy Norman, Jim McAtamney, David O’Grady, Bob Cairncross, Mick Kendal, Joyce Harpur). Garth Hunter was MC, and grateful to our dedicated President Garry Clarke who found the time to be present in his busy day of Club activities. Lesley and Brett Hunter handed out this year’s embroidered polo shirts. The special large Avoca Beach photos taken by Graham Love, were presented to Ava Bourke, Brett Hunter, Darren Clarke, Rob Steller and Steve Tatham, for completing their 10th swim. This annual event provided great camaraderie for the two Surf Clubs who share this strip of sand, Avoca Beach and North Avoca Surf Life Saving Clubs. The support of Presidents Garry Clarke and Rick Parsons are always most appreciated. Next year will be our 20th anniversary! Michael Hunter

FIRST AID Report This season was a quieter season than previous seasons in the lifesaving area due to fewer rescues and first aid procedures. Those instances where first aid was required highlighted the training and skill level of our volunteers. A big thank you and congratulations to all patrolling members for their professional approach to first aid within Avoca Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. It is pleasing to see members continue to up skill themselves with first aid and resuscitation awards and we encourage more members to take the opportunity to improve in this area. Thank you also to the patrol captains for their efforts in maintaining strong patrols. Once again appreciation must go to those businesses that have supported our Club in donating First Aid supplies and equipment. Terrigal and Avoca Beach Medical Centres, SLS Central Coast, Megasave at Erina and our Ladies Auxiliary deserve our heartfelt thanks.

VALE – Sandy Mitchell 19.5.1949 – 1.7.2010 Sandy was a big part of our club through the 60’s, 70’s and the 80’s but due to the long and courageous battle with cancer she was not so often seen in recent years. A member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary in the early days and one of Avoca’s greatest supporters, with a voice that certainly didn’t match her body size. Through many decades she promoted good clean healthy living to many young girls and women with her dance school and was always first

to encourage the young men of the club to achieve their maximum fitness, good health and strive to achieve the best in their ambitions. (She always seemed to have the right answers to anyone’s troubles, whether it be family or not). Sandy will be sadly missed by many friends and her big family as they were her life. She will always be remembered as a wonderful lady with a kind word to all. Sandy was a loving daughter, aunty, cousin, sister, mother, grandmother, sister in law and wife and will always be remembered as a wonderful woman with a loving heart and soul who will live on through her six beautiful children and 14 plus grand children. We miss you but will never forget you, especially Billy who was 4 when he met you. Hold our love with you always.

JUNIOR ACTIVITIES 2010/2011 The older you get the quicker time seems to pass, as another season has been and gone. As usual it was a very busy one on the Nipper front, and a lot of hard work by not enough helpers. To our kids, a lot of great results in all areas of competition, and fun by all at Sunday Nippers. During any season you require many hands to ease the workload, but Sonya Walters and Deborah Rendall gave so much time to ensure that this season could happen. Enough cannot be said for how much work these women put in for our Nippers, thank you. To the other members of the Nippers Committee, thank you for your assistance throughout Season 2010/2011 as without you it would not be possible. To all our other helpers a massive thank you too, whether it be slaving over the BBQ, on the beach, officials, water safety, fundraising, or helping in the uniform room, the Nippers could not continue without your help. In our 2nd year around the Committee put a lot of emphasis on coaching for Season 2010/2011. We felt that some areas of competition were not getting enough support, and endeavoured to improve in these areas. Ironperson and beach were the prime focus, with ironperson being offered each Saturday, and beach training sessions being completed twice weekly. Next season surf swim training will be high on the priority list. A special thanks to all our coaches, as the time you all put in for our kids is amazing, and the dedication and commitment you show them is second to none. This is highlighted in the Nippers continued outstanding results. Our Nippers are awesome, as the feats of the children that compete at all levels of competition continue to amaze me each and every year. Not just those kids winning medal after medal, but the kids that continue to battle and improve year after year, and the little Nippers with those massive smiles and desire in their little eyes. For those that have not already heard, Avoca Nippers won 3 out of 3 branch Nipper carnivals, won the Branch Championships on home turf, and came 4th at the 2011 State All Age Championships held at Cudgen Headland SLSC. Our Nippers won the branch carnivals by as many as 200 points and were only headed by the largest clubs at State being Manly, Cronulla and North Cronulla.

My 3 biggest personal highlights for this season were; 1. The efforts and achievements of our younger age groups, the new U8’s and their results in both the boys and girls were outstanding, and the U9’s that stepped up to the swim and board this season also excelled and made us proud. 2. The all age board relay at State was held in very challenging surf conditions to say the least, just ask anyone who watched. Our kids achieved 5th in this event but everyone of these kids bashed themselves to get out and in for each other, it was brilliant the effort they displayed for each other. 3. Although no longer Nippers, Avoca’s U15’s finished equal 1st at the Australian Championships, a great result for our recently departed Nippers. To our departing U14’s, best of luck with all your future endeavours, whether that be in surf lifesaving or other areas, but we look forward to seeing you on the beach patrolling and competing next season with the senior club. Thanks for all your dedication to Nippers over many years. The Committee for Season 2010/2011 has now been elected, and I would like to thank those new bodies for their commitments for next season. We again look forward to another successful year, where we continue to progress forward. Lastly thanks to our Nippers for allowing me to be involved and being a part of their achievements. See you all again next season. Murray Tancred, Nipper President – Avoca Beach SLSC Executive 2010/2011 Murray Tancred . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Congratulations to all those kids that excelled at State this season with 36 of our 70 starters gaining medals which is an outstanding achievement. Also to all those kids that made finals at State, it too is an amazing effort, with 58 of the 70 reaching this level.

Age Managers

To all those families that travelled north for the State Championships thanks for an enjoyable tour, and looking forward to doing it all again in 2012. We also look forward to seeing Garth and Stan with their U7 boys and girls in the competition arena next season.

A RESCUE OF THE MONTH November 2010 Avoca Beach SLSC

Lifesavers involved: Dan Mitchell, Matt Parker, Todd Petrie, Duncan Smith, Daniel McClelland, John Mitchell

At 6:30am on 26 November 2010, the reserve surfboat crew had finished a one hour training session in very testing conditions. The swell and wind was out of the north east and the tide was dead low. A strong rip running at the southern end of the beach was combining with another large rip, making sea conditions very messy and dangerous. The boat crew were swimming in the southern corner close to shore to avoid the rip when they noticed a fitness group jumping off a rock platform and attempting to swim back against the rips, which were travelling quickly out to sea. After watching their progress and talking to one of the women who had remained on shore saying she didn’t feel confident enough to do the swim, the crew decided the swimmers were in need of urgent assistance. The group of 12 were becoming separated with some stronger swimmers making progress, while most struggled in the rip. It was now obvious that some of the group were in real danger of drowning.

Brett Beswick, Director Lifesaving CC

With the IRB inaccessible so early in the morning, the boat crew chose to grab the rescue equipment that was available and proceeded to do what they had been trained to do as surf lifesavers. Dan Mitchell, Duncan Smith and Todd Petrie grabbed rescue boards and Matt Parker proceeded with a rescue tube. John Mitchell stayed on shore to direct proceedings and alert the rescuers to the positions of the swimmers. Daniel McClelland arrived at the beach and was alerted to the fact that the rescue effort required the help of a jetski. Daniel launched the jetski and was able to bring the swimmers back to shore, two at a time. After six trips, all swimmers were safely back on shore, thanks to the efforts of the reserve boat crew and Daniel McClelland. The brave actions and professional skills of all involved on this day prevented a possible tragedy from occurring. The club and its members can be very proud of their actions
