DREAMING OF SKIING IN SWITZERLAND? EATING CROISSANTS UNDERNEATH THE EIFFEL TOWER? CRUISING AROUND ASIA? LAYING ON A FIJIAN BEACH ATTEMPTING TO TAN? WE WOULD BE HAVING THE HOLIDAY OF OUR DREAMS RIGHT NOW IF WE COULD AFFORD IT. WE CAN’T THOUGH – NOT RIGHT THIS SECOND. HOW DO WE GET THERE FASTER? HOW DO THESE WONDERFUL BEAUTIFUL HOLIDAYS WE’RE DREAMING OF BECOME A REALITY?

Here’s how:

I. Make a list of things you want to do. Get excited. Make the holiday feel “real.” Sounds so simple, but it will make saving much easier. Helps you think twice before buying a second pint at dinner – what do you want MORE a pint at the local or a pint besides a London fire while the snow falls down outside? II. Save for actual experiences, not dollar amounts. From this pay, don’t set aside $500 to savings, pop your tickets on layby and buy a rail card. Or buy your museum ticket for the Dali exhibit that you want to see in Barcelona. Or buy theatre tickets for Broadway. These are all things that you would be buying anyway – but buying a tangible item makes it easier to feel closer to your trip. You also can’t “dip” into your savings on a night out on the town if your savings are tied up on rail tickets.

III. Make a picture board of your holiday and put it somewhere you look at every single day. For example, put this wonderful board of pictures next to your phone at work. Or next to your mirror to look at when you get ready for the day. Again, it helps you to focus on the end result. Focus is the key to helping you save. IV. Set yourself little goals with little rewards when you reach them. First $1000 in savings? Invite the girls over for a midweek Mexican night and drink a lot of budget wine to celebrate reaching this landmark. Take a sick day and spend it at the beach. Rent a few terrible travel movies and eat an entire block of chocolate. V. On a practical level, sometimes it helps to set up direct debits. That way the money you want going into your holiday fund can then be transferred into your account without you having to consciously do it. If it’s a big holiday, think about setting up an account that you can’t touch – consider using a highinterest account with a different bank.

VI. Connect with a friend that is also saving. If you both have a reason to save – a joint holiday? – teamwork will help you both stay on track. Share cheap nights in, swap saving tips and compete over who can get to their goals first. Sort out your filing cabinet. Tedious, I know. There is no use holding onto your first ever pay check or stack of forms you have kept for the car that you sold in 2007. Getting your paperwork in order is akin to getting your life in order. VII. Set up a coin jar and put $4 in it when you skip a morning coffee. Empty your wallet every Sunday afternoon of coins. This way, there will be a contribution to it at least once a week.

IX. Quit the gym and set up a workout group with your friends. Or download a program you can follow by running to a local park and using the equipment they have there. Your body will benefit from the routine change and you won’t ever have to compete for a treadmill when you use the footpath to run. X. Make birthday presents by hand instead of buying them in a store. Paint, knit, write, sculpt or print out photos and make a collage with all the good times you have shared with the people you love. Coming from the heart, these gifts will mean a lot more to the recipient than a gift voucher and can be a fun way to spend a few nights.

In no time at all you’ll be exactly where you Lock up your credit card and make want to be. a conscious effort to pay with things in cash only. Using cash helps you see the value of the money you’re spending – not just the dollars coming out of your account. You will find that you naturally spend less without really changing a thing.

WE ALL HAVE TREMENDOUS CAPACITY AS HUMAN BEINGS TO FEEL FREE AND ALIVE ESPECIALLY WHEN WE ARE ON HOLIDAYS. WHETHER WE ARE ALONE OR NOT, TRAVELLING IS BY FAR ONE OF THE GRANDEST EXPERIENCES ONE CAN HAVE, BUT IT TOO CAN COME WITH ITS SHORTFALLS.

We can in many instances find ourselves in moments of stress and anxiety because we are under pressure to meet a certain time schedule so we can catch some form of transportation or something hasn’t really met our expectations, be it the hotel or the food we ate, or even the price of things. Most of us have a story of something not meeting our expectations and being let down. You see, we all have expectations which are driven by how we perceive our lives should be, and I wont get into the intricacies of how and why this occurs but all of us fall into this trap of sabotaging what could have been a little nicer experience if we didn’t live through this filter we walk around with. Some of us have such high expectations that we become engrossed in judgement and some of us cause ourselves severe panic and anxiety related syndromes because we are driven by our own sense of high expectation which fuels this blind voice that nothing is ever good enough - and this is the trap we need to break free from. Sometimes we just need to take a step back and just breathe the fresh air and be grateful for what we already just have because at the end of the day we don’t take anything with us when we die; all we leave behind is our legacy.

Taking that step back and just enjoying what is can release you from that stress especially when on holidays or travelling, or just generally in any situation, expanding your eyesight outwards rather than the usual shortsighted vision we can all find ourselves in, we can then look around ourselves and notice the small things we usually wouldn’t notice - the colours, the shapes, the styles, the creases even, knowing in the moment everything just is - as it is. Our perception can expend in this way and it can allow us to become a lot freer on the inside within our hearts and minds because we are disengaging from a closed minded point of view and experiencing real truth is this way, and as they say, it is truth that will set you free. All things that cause us to limit ourselves and contract are based on judgements. Be in the moment and notice the small things, this most simple of suggestions can have massive consequences on achieving glorious outcomes whether you are travelling or in any situation you can encounter.

FRINGING FEST Fringing, a niche trend, refuses to die! Coming back in big style, it wasn’t just cowgirl or just flapper, it was just omnipresent! From eveningwear to read-to-wear, fringing and tassels shimmied their way on the catwalk and (hopefully) straight into your wardrobe! Featured heavily in NYFW in collections by Altuzarra, Calvin Klein, Emilio Pucci, Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, Rodarte, The Row, Junya Watanabe, Proenza Schouler, J.W. Anderson, Erdem to Derek Lam, fringing has become the embellishment of choice this season. Calvin Klein and Altuzarra brought fringing back into glamourwear, with Klein and Missoni’s mottled fringed dresses and Altuzzara’s over-the-top edgy cobalt blue leather fringing, thigh split skirt mixed with a black fringed lapels and cuffs dinner jacket. Emilio Pucci mixed in Aztec-inspired

geometry black and white prints into his cowgirl top and short ensemble, teamed up with another cobalt blue accessory, a hot blueand-black opened toe ankle heeled boots for a pop of colour. Both Rodarte’s and Klein’s head-to-toe virginal white fringing ensemble exuded the trend in pure luxury silhouette, whilst incorporating another spring/summer trend, hot white. Rodarte’s white satin smoking jacket with a white midriff baring top gave way to the stunning two-tone asymmetric fringed skirt that shimmered like a piece of art-deco flapper couture. Klein’s more modern take of a white body-hugging silhouette with only panelling of fringing added to the trend without overt.

Missoni and J.W. Anderson kept fringing restraint with garments resembling thin threads strung over the top of sheer fabrics to create texture, shimmer without the actual shimmering of the strands found on flapper style dresses. This elegant take showcased the softer, feminine side to fringing that any woman can incorporate in their wardrobes. How to wear fringing? Select materials that can work some fringing into the equation such as leather, silk and beading. Fringing can be an embellishment on an accessory, like a neck accoutrement or leather bag, or can be over-the-top tassel cowgirl getup ensemble. Keep it fresh by investing in pieces with bold or colourful prints. For a more subtle effect, choose loose-form dresses, tops or skirts that feature fringing in multiple, thin spaghetti lines over sheer fabric for a more elegant and feminine touch.

GINGHAM STYLE Just like the inexplicable explosion of fringing in NYFW, gingham has also come out in force with several New York designers favouring the classic picnic-print textile and reforming it and reinterpreting it in a new and fresh manner. Joseph Altuzarra lead the charge, sending his models in gingham shirtdresses, daringly unbuttoned. At first glance, Altuzarra’s cuts looked conservative, until those gazing at his model’s leg reached right up to the inner thighs did the audience realise how provocative his designs became when he featured thigh-high slits. Diane von Furstenberg turned back time, with a runway show overloaded with gingham print items from 50’s inspired French Riviera matching two-piece long-sleeved top and

shorts combo, baby-doll dresses in pink, canary yellow to cobalt blue, to strappy heels and totes - all featuring gingham print. Not to be outdone, American sportswear designer, Michael Kors also drew on the 50’s inspired stylings for his collection, with blossoming sunflower prints and gingham painted in Barbie pink. Unlike von Furstenberg, Kors toned down his pastel coloured gingham trend by teaming up tan and neutral leather accessories and heels. But the designer who stole the runway spotlight with this trend was Oscar de la Renta. With elegant cocktail dresses, to coats to skirts to crop tops, all made surprisingly luxe despite being in a selection of gingham prints. Unlike the smaller gingham squares

von Furstenberg, Kors and Ralph Lauren utilised, de la Renta went with “bigger” as better, with bold, strong squares in pastel and white, or the classic black and white. His array of garments showcased the flexibility the gingham print can muster and have been sorely overlooked. To wear this trend, flirt with the 50’s styling of your gingham one-piece or two-piece ensemble. Stick to accessorising it with leather in a neutral palette to make your bubblegum coloured gingham print stand out. For a more relaxed luxe feel, pick a gingham item in big, bold squares - whether that be a lightweight cloak or top, but in soft pastels. For a more refined and classic look, stick with the traditional black and white gingham print, in a two piece ensemble with an elegant silhouette.

MEN STYLE VINTAGE AMERICANA Everything old is suddenly new again. Like previous trends Military and Nautical, which seem to be perennial trends, Vintage Americana continues to be a circle of influence and force in menswear each season. Encompassing a wide range of definitions to characterise this trend, it is best demonstrated in the 1940’s and 50’s clothing, glamourised by movie stars such as James Dean and Marlon Brando. The trend of Vintage Americana comprises of bright colours with striking patterns. This type of rebellious streak came after a period of traditional monotones, austerity and rationing following the end of World War II. The two standout fashion houses to embrace this trend fully in their SS14 runway collection were Louis Vuitton and Missoni.

Inspired by a road trip across America, Kim Jones, the Head of Menswear at Louis Vuitton referenced everything from Ivy Leaguers to frat boys, utilising check and plaid motifs in bold colourings and separates on classic cut blazers, suits, shirts and shorts.

waisted, wide-leg pants, the look channelled the 50’s Americana vibe. Teamed with printed tees underneath open shirts, cardigan-type blazers with loose-fitting khaki trousers worn high waisted, Missoni provided a more updated take on the Ivy League/preppy trend.

Vintage style shirts in bright hues and paisley patterns with wide collared, peak labels also featured prominently. As well as preppy varsity jackets in red with collegiate patches, a multitude of baseball jackets in different fabrics and colours, harkened back to the silhouette James Dean’s iconic red windbreaker punctuated in his classic movie, Rebel Without A Cause.

Following the trend with wide-leg pants, high-waisted suits and short-sleeved shirts were collections from Ermenegildo Zegna, Canali and Nicole Farhi. It is quite clear that Vintage Americana can be easily incorporated into any man’s wardrobe. With a wide variety of influences, whether is it rockabilly-inspired or the deft touch of an Hawaiian print, or just a dash of a classic Ivy League varsity jacket for that preppy look, there is something for every man.

Missoni continued the trend with retro shortsleeved peak label shirts in busy Aztec motifs. Worn with the collars unbuttoned and high-

LUMBERSEXUAL TARTAN Move over metrosexual! The latest trend to hit menswear and grooming has taken over your “Beckham” reign with the rise to all things “manly” related to “lumberjacks.” And that would be beards, tattoos, boots, immaculate grooming and flannels. But to luxe up this traditionally masculine aesthetic were the heavy usage of checks and tartan prints and patterns in this year’s NYFW.

Leading the charge has been Billy Reid, Timo Weiland, DKNY, Ovadia & Sons and Michael Bastian. Billy Reid’s runway show had subtle elements of tartan prints in loose fitted trousers and oversized scarfjackets Timo Weiland put models in an updated,

fitted flannel shirt, half tucked in with black skinny jeans. Both DKNY and Ovadia & Sons crafted tailored, slim-fit suits in gaudy tartan prints in an array of colours and hues.

Whether in muted tones of maroon or navy with a balanced neutral gradient effect or contrast it with pink and black, tartan will no longer be outcast in the sartorial world. The options to wearing tartan are never ending: with an oversized tartan overcoat or matching jacket and pant suiting for that immediate Highland statement.

This creates a smart and sharp styling that really draws attention to the wearer. Or vice versa, teaming the tartan trousers with a bold coloured pullover, shirt or neutral-coloured utilitarian overcoat for that striking ensemble. For those more conservative dressers, select items and garments with a hint of tartan accents and detailing for a more subtle and restraint approach.

Or mix and match the tartan suit by pairing the jacket with a plain-coloured trousers in a complementary hue of the tartan jacket.

Comfort is a large part of the concept, however equally as essential to the brand persona and even more important is maintaining sustainability through all aspects of the brand. “We went for a sustainable brand because at the time there wasn’t really anything catching that was both eco-friendly and fashionable” And the celebrity fans? I definitely geek out, Tik laughs. A native Californian, Victoria Tik ensures that the pieces are all locally made and ring true to the LA spirit of providing green options for everything in life. Eco-friendly often means a large price tag but the team at FROCK L.A do not agree with that, they don’t want to penalise their customers for being environmentally conscious, as it seems to be in most industries. In fact, they make it their goal to offer the garments for less and do it better. The organic, vegan collection is made and sourced locally, colours are achieved by using vegetable dyes, a low waste cutting technique is utilsied. Fabrics are cultivated from bamboo trees minus the used of any toxins.

Maintaining sustainability goes further than the materials used and the way the clothes are manufactured. As Tik believes trends have a big impact on what people are buying and throwing away, so she wants to create timeless pieces. “It’s actually easier for me not to follow [trends] when I’m designing. Instead I’m focused on what people want to wear rather than what’s cool to wear”.

After launching a career in the fast-paced world of advertising, Tik endeavored to find the perfect frock that would take her straight from the office to fashion events at night. After failing to find one, she took matters into her own hands and created a simple jersey dress that was fashionable and verstile enough to wear all day and night. FROCK L.A was launched in 2009 with a small collection of basics and soon became a success. Still to this day, the team at FROCK L.A stick to their constants: high quality no-pill eco-friendly fabrics, careful construction, flattering cuts, low maintenance care and timeless yet edgy designs. It seems these days, especially in the US, that being ‘cool’ and being environmentally friendly go hand in hand. Organic restaurants and shops are popping up all over LA and with many of the rich and famous going green and urging others to do the same. So is just a passing fad or are people starting to change their lifestyle for good? “I hope it’s not a trend” Tik says “I urge for it to be more of a lifestyle. I see a lot of international brands adapting or at least offering it in addition to. For us it’s a personal choice, and I’ve found ways to make it better than synthetic so why not?”

To add more to her already impressive resume, Tik is also a social media guru, she has consulted for Google’s Boutiques.com and has executed multi-platform marketing opportunities. She strongly believes that social media has given the industry a fresh face and that tastemakers now aren’t just the magazine editors anymore, they are everyday people. “That’s exciting to me, because ultimately it’s who we’re trying to reach”. As for aims for the future, it’s back to sustainability “For the future, I’d love for more and more people to care more about their belongings, in a way that’s trying to understand who benefits from them and how they’re made. Ignorance is harmful not only to your wallet but to everything around you.” And finally, the question I couldn’t not ask a fashion designer from LA. Which celebrity would she most like to dress and why. The answer? Blake Lively, she makes all her own fashion decisions and she’s very wise at it. She’s the quintessential California Girl!”

We caught up with Lauren to chat about THE SUCCESS OF THE FALL LINE ‘Lauren’s closet’, her incredibly successful HAS BEEN HUGE. ARE YOU BLOWN collaboration with Canadian label Le Château. AWAY BY IT ALL? WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO TELL US ABOUT LAUREN’S CLOSET? It all sort of came about a year ago. I was doing a movie called After the Ball, which is sort of a Cinderella story set in a world of fashion. I was told that Le Château was designing all of the clothes. They’re a Canadian company based in Montreal. Even though I live in Canada now, I’m not a big shopper. I don’t go to the malls or anything, so I didn’t really know the brand. When I tried on the clothes, I loved them. I loved the way they fit, I loved the way they were tailored. I became a huge fan and started shopping there so much that I told the owner of the company that they should call their store ‘Lauren’s Closet’….and then it all just sort of came about! SO YOU JUMPED AT THE OPPORTUNITY TO COLLABORATE WITH LE CHÂTEAU? I did, because in all ways, I could be excited about it. I truly did love the clothes, I found myself wearing them all the time. They fit my lifestyle, and when I say that I mean a busy, working mother, that is always travelling, always going to things. The price point, also, was also amazing especially for the quality and the way everything’s made, that I felt really good about going out there and say, ‘Buy this! Do this! Get this!’, because I felt it was attainable for everyone. I think the most incredible thing is that all the shoes are leather and made in Italy. The way things are tailored…and the way things are made…it’s kind of amazing at that price point! I always tease them, I say their online doesn’t even do them justice! WE KNOW YOU’RE A HIGHLY ESTEEMED ACTRESS, BUT IS THIS THE FIRST FASHION BUSINESS VENTURE YOU’VE TAKEN?

I must say, it’s very exciting. It’s really fun too, because now I am shooting a series called Motive, and my character is wearing all of my own clothes now, and other characters pull a lot of pieces from my collection too! HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR OWN PERSONAL STYLE, DO YOU THINK IT’S CHANGED OVER THE YEARS? Yeah, I think it has changed because I got simpler as I got older. I always tried to do so much as I got older. It’s very important to me that clothes are easy to wear. I can’t stand to feel like I have to suck in all day, or that I need all these special undergarments or whatever! WHAT’S THREE ITEMS A WOMAN SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE IN HER WARDROBE? A great pair of leggings, a cosy big sweater with a hood and a great black tuxedo jacket. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE IN YOUR WARDROBE, AND IS THERE A STORY BEHIND IT? I would say probably a pair of lace-up boots that I’ve had since I was 18. I’ve worn them in a bunch of movies, and to go on crazy hiking trips all over the world, and all I’ve had to do is replace the laces. THAT’S AMAZING! Yeah, especially when you realise how many years that is! WHAT ARE YOU EXPLORING FOR THE FORTHCOMING SEASON? Following the immense success of the fall edition, a holiday, fall and summer selection is soon to follow, with hopes to soon ship to customers internationally.

It is. I would say that it’s been a great collaboration, because I would never call myself a designer. I feel like I represent a type of woman, and I know what she wants. They’ve been so fabulous when I’ve gone to them and said, ‘We need this!’.

My journey for fashion all started actually in Melbourne Australia almost 4 years ago. I feel Australia is where is developed my own unique style and where i really started designing and being exposed to every aspect of the fashion industry. EXPLAIN TO ME HOW ONE OF YOUR WORKING DAYS WOULD LOOK, WHAT WOULD YOU DO, ETC. I wake up have my green drink check emails and prepare for any events, class or shows I have on. My day usually is filled with class which i study part time FRM (Fashion Retail Management) at Art Institute of Houston also meetings with buyers, boutiques, interviews, event planning, speaking, meeting with my production team and working on next seasons designs. You never know when you will get a spark of creativity so if you do what you love everyday is filled with so called work. WHAT’S THE BIGGEST TREND THIS SEASON? I feel like the color royal electric blue is really shining this season not only in my collection but all over the fashion globe in many variations of styles.

I love to use all types of fabrics but I am very tedious when it comes to my fabrics I will travel all over the world just to find the material i am looking for. My favorite are organza and brushed silks... I have a pair of high-waisted brushed silk pants in my SS/15 collection that have comfort and style in one. I LOVE TO USE ALL TYPES OF FABRICS BUT I AM VERY TEDIOUS WHEN IT COMES TO MY FABRICS I WILL TRAVEL ALL OVER THE WORLD JUST TO FIND THE MATERIAL I AM LOOKING FOR. MY FAVORITE ARE ORGANZA AND BRUSHED SILKS.. I HAVE A PAIR OF HIGHWAISTED BRUSHED SILK PANTS IN MY SS/15 COLLECTION THAT HAVE COMFORT AND STYLE IN ONE? I would have to say Madonna. I have always had a vision of the celebrities and people I would love to dress and see wearing Demartini. But Madonna has always been a love of mine because her authority as a woman I believe what you wear should empower you. She always stood out and made a statement and I idolize that about her.

It’s always good across the Festival – it was like going through to play in Boston as it’s home. We love the a warzone! Having said that it was epic as we Movement Festival in Detroit and the aftergot to see WuTang and Beyoncé; for music it’s parties; it has a special setting, audience and an amazing festival to attend. atmosphere. We’ve played there twice and looking forward to playing there again.

IS THERE A TIME-FRAME OF CREATING A MIX? Depends – you can record live, do a record, or create mixes where you can plan everything out and make a collage. With a theme and concept, it can take two weeks to get right, so there’s a whole range of time it takes to make these. Our mixes are about something that’s showcasing our sounds or labels, or history, or history lessons like barbeques, retrospective mix…it’s fun when you have direction. CAN YOU SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE TOURING WITH WOLF + LAMB – WHAT WAS IT LIKE TOURING WITH OTHER DJS? We’ve toured together almost since the beginning and are very close. They started adding numbers like us and we began doing parties together. It’s just something we’ve always done, and it’s more fun touring with our friends.

WILL YOU BE EXPANDING YOUR MUSIC INTO OTHER GENRES IN THE FUTURE? IF SO, WHAT WILL THEY BE AND WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO EXPLORE FURTHER? We grew up in different genres and we try to take all of them in so we haven’t really been into dividing ourselves by genre. As we continue to grow we go into the funk world like George Clinton. We want to experiment with funk – anything and everything can be funky. We want to explore how funky we can be. WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT IN FUTURE, IN PARTICULAR 2015? 2015 is all about putting music back into fun, going out dancing and all night. We are continuously opening up to different kinds of music. We will continue to grow our label and grow artists. See where you can all go with our merry band of gypsies. Free your mind, and your ass will follow.
