QUALITY TAKES TIME. AND 121 YEARS OF ADVENTURES HAVE TAKEN US A LONG WAY. Function, quality and innovative technical solutions have been the cornerstones of our stoves and lanterns throughout our history. Since 1892 we have been working to make life in the great outdoors as good as possible. Today we are a part of people’s adventures, both great and small, throughout the world. In the 1880s many people tried to design effective kerosene stoves. However, most of these stoves did not work very well and gave off a lot of smoke. The partners F.W. Lindqvist and J.V. Svenson worked hard in their small blacksmith’s workshop in central Stockholm to develop kerosene stoves. In March 1892 they started to produce the very first soot-free kerosene stove. They called it ’Primus’.
In 1897 Andrée took a Primus stove with him when he made his attempt to reach the North Pole in a hot-air balloon. In 1911 Roald Amundsen had a Primus stove with him when he reached the South Pole. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 29 May 1953. They prepared their food on a stove from Primus. The same kind of stove has been used by Japanese women to cook their rice and by Bedouins to make their tea. In some African villages the Primus stove was the main and often the only household appliance they had. The 1930s saw the launch of LPG gas and the first LPG stove was made in 1938. In the 1940s and 1950s Primus developed LPG stoves, LPG lanterns and LPG cylinders.
Quality takes time, but it is definitely worth it in the long run. Primus OmniFuel has been named the best outdoor stove by Outdoor Magazin, the most popular outdoor magazine in Europe. Seven years running! OmniFuel is our most advanced multifuel stove and has been developed with the help of leading adventure seekers for many years. Our Primus laboratory contains all the equipment we need to test our stoves in extreme cold, heat and wind. But we do not stop there. We also test them in real environments and we have received a number of approvals from test institutes around the world. We started our environmental work as early as 1978. This is when we started to develop gas burners for African countries to help them reduce the amount of wood they used for cooking. Primus Eta Stoves are among the most ecofriendly and fuel-efficient portable stoves on the market. In 2007 our Eta Power stoves won a number of awards in many different countries. In 2008 we started to invest in Bauminvest, a long-term tree planting project in Costa Rica to offset the low levels of carbon dioxide emissions that our Eta stoves actually produce. We continue to be pioneers in this field and are always developing new products with smart functions. After the founders’ modest start, Primus has
been an innovator and a market leader in products for cooking, heating and lighting for more than 100 years. Helping us to become part of people’s adventures, both big and small. But our biggest challenges still lie ahead. We are constantly spurred on

Lindqvist and Svenson sold their first stoves themselves. They knocked on doors and found many of their customers in the open air, among women stallholders standing out in the freezing cold. After a while they came into contact with B.A. Hjorth, who was interested in their invention and signed a contract to sell their stoves exclusively. In the very first year Primus stoves were exported to Norway and success was assured.

Frozen in ice for 33 years
Engineer Andrée’s North Pole expedition disappeared without a trace and was the subject of speculation, rumours and myths for many years. This speculation ends in 1930 when the crew of the Norwegian sealing vessel Bratvaag land by chance on White Island near Svalbard in the Arctic Ocean. At this time the island is surrounded by a wide belt of polar ice and it is normally impossible to land there. It is the summer of 1930 and the temperature is unusually high. Two of the sealers go on land in search of water. During their search they make a sensational discovery, finding a frozen boat with a boat hook engraved with the words ‘Andrée’s Polar Expedition 1896’. The remains of the three expedition members are nearby, along with roles of film, fragments of clothes, diaries and logbooks, and maps that have been frozen in the ice for 33 years. The ceremonial return of the bodies to Stockholm triggers widespread national mourning. The unique expedition material now needs to be handled with the greatest of care. Some of the most talented scientists in Norway and Sweden are chosen for this difficult job. The pages of the diaries are dried together, so they are carefully separated using ammonia, slowing revealing a gripping story of the men’s futile battle against the ice. The task of bringing the films back to life proves to be extremely complicated, but grainy photos are finally revealed showing the heavy boat being dragged over tall icebergs. The equipment also includes a Primus stove, with kerosene still left in the burner. As soon as the stove arrives in Stockholm it is filled with new kerosene and although it has spent 33 years in the ice, it can ‘bring a litre of water to the boil in 6 minutes ”’. ChOOSING ThE RIGhT FUEL
FUEL CONSUMPTION
The choice of fuel depends on a number of different factors, such as where you live in the world and the availability of fuels; but also on factors such as the fuel’s energy content. Below is a brief description of the most common types of fuel:

LP gas (Liquified Petroleum): Extremely high energy content (ratio of weight to heat output). gas in gas cartridges is compressed 250 times into a liquid form. The pressure results in a low freezing point and means that the fuel burns well even at high altitudes. Going one step further, the Primus gas is an optimal blend for the greatest reliability, the broadest areas of usage and the lowest weight. Primus’ gas consists of 25% propane, 25% isobutane and 50% butane. There is no need for pumping or pre-heating and combustion is completely free of odor and soot. No leaks or dangerous fumes. Drawbacks – gas cartridges are not permitted on planes. In most countries, you can hand in empty gas cartridges where you buy new ones. Empty cartridges can also be recycled as scrap metal.

The table above applies to a single stove and one person, cooking an average amount of freeze-dried with coffee and tea breaks. For two people and a single stove, increase comsumption by about 50 % in winter. The levels of consumption specified above should be regarded as guidelines. Variations can be expected depending, amongst other things, on the wind, temperature, number of people and type of food. Protection from the wind is of the outmost importance to keeping the consumption at a low level. Winter consumption includes melting snow. Using products from our Eta series helps to radically reduce fuel consumption, thanks to their high efficiency. This means less packaging weight and volume as well as lower carbon dioxide emissions.
White gasoline/petrol (chemically clean gasoline, also called naphtha): This type of gasoline is cleaner than the standard gasoline/petrol used in cars. It can be purchased at paint shops and outdoor stores. Even though car gasoline/petrol is more readily available, it contains a number of harmful substances and should only be used if no chemically clean gasoline can be obtained (unleaded gasoline/ petrol is the least harmful of the different types of car fuel). White gasoline is the most flammable of all liquid fuels. Drawbacks – extremely flammable, and requires pumping and preheating.

Kerosene: Same energy content as white gasoline but more readily available. Drawbacks – pumping and preheating required, not as clean as white gasoline or chemically clean gasoline, and thus requires more maintenance of the stove. Strong odor during combustion. Diesel: Contains the energy equivalent of kerosene with excellent availability. The quality varies significantly depending on your location, and the drawbacks are even more pronounced. Compared with kerosene, there is an increased need for maintenance, which can be quite extensive depending on the quality of the diesel. Diesel should be considered an emergency fuel.
ENERGY vALUES
qUEL EST LE MEILLEUR COMBUSTIBLE? Les différents facteurs qui alimentent ce débat relèvent, d’une part, des contraintes géographiques et de la disponibilité locale, du poids et de la valeur énergétique, d’autre part. Tout ce que vous devez savoir sur le sujet peut se résumer ainsi : GPL ou Gaz de Pétrole Liquéfié : Valeur énergétique extrêmement élevée. Le GPL en cartouches est comprimé pour occuper un volume 250 fois plus faible sous forme liquide, avec un point de congélation abaissé et une bonne combustion à haute altitude. En outre, le contenu d’une cartouche Primus constitue le mélange optimal et donne une fiabilité maximale, un poids minimal et un vaste champ d’utilisation. Il est constitué de 25% de propane, 25% d’isobutane et 50% de butane. Pas besoin de pomper pour augmenter la pression ni de préchauffer. La combustion ne produit ni odeur ni suie. Pas de fuites ni de déchets dangereux. Son seul défaut est que les réservoirs ne sont pas admis à bord des avions (mais dans la plupart des pays, vous pouvez déposer votre cartouche vide à l’achat d’une nouvelle, le métal étant recyclable). Essence (essence purifiée, essence filtrée) : Il s’agit d’un type d’essence plus propre que celui utilisé par les voitures. Les alpinistes l’achètent en droguerie ou dans les magasins de sport. Bien que l’essence de voiture soit plus largement répandue, elle contient des additifs dangereux et ne devrait être utilisée qu’en dernier recours (sachant que l’essence sans plomb est la moins polluante). L’essence brûle facilement puisque c’est le plus inflammable de tous les combustibles liquides, ce qui est aussi son principal défaut. Le pompage et le préchauffage sont indispensables.

Pétrole : Avec le même pouvoir calorifique que l’essence, il a l’avantage de pouvoir s’acheter partout. Ses défauts : nécessite un pompage et un préchauffage. Il n’est pas aussi pur que le GPL et l’essence filtrée, de sorte que le réchaud devra faire l’objet d’un entretien plus attentif. Il dégage une odeur désagréable. Diesel: a les mêmes qualités énergétique que le pétrole et on en trouve partout. La qualité varie beaucoup selon l’endroit et les inconvénients sont encore mieux connus. Comparé au pétrole, il nécessite encore plus d’entretien et peut, selon sa qualité, être largement répandu. Le diesel doit être considéré comme un combustible de secours.

PRIMUS’ EFFORTS TO PROTECT ThE ENvIRONMENT
All kinds of combustion processes produce carbon dioxide, which is the main cause of global warming. That’s why Primus introduced a new generation of fuel-efficient stoves in its Eta series in 2007. Most outdoor stoves on the market have an efficiency rating of about 40%. That means that 60% of the energy they produce is wasted. Eta technology helps to reduce fuel consumption dramatically – it’s possible to achieve up to 50% savings. That means it produces lower emissions. But Primus’ work to protect the environment doesn’t stop there. Together with BaumInvest, we are stepping up to the plate and taking responsibility for our impact on the environment by fully offsetting what little carbon dioxide emissions our Eta stoves do produce. BaumInvest is a foundation that runs a long-term project replanting rainforest in Costa Rica. Its goal is to meet urgent ecological needs, while combining this environmental work with long-term entrepreneurship and commitment to social causes. From 2009, Primus will also donate a sum for each gas cartridge sold.

QUALITY TAKES TIME. AND 121 YEARS OF ADVENTURES HAVE TAKEN US A LONG WAY. Function, quality and innovative technical solutions have been the cornerstones of our stoves and lanterns throughout our history. Since 1892 we have been working to make life in the great outdoors as good as possible. Today we are a part of people’s adventures, both great and small, throughout the world. In the 1880s many people tried to design effective kerosene stoves. However, most of these stoves did not work very well and gave off a lot of smoke. The partners F.W. Lindqvist and J.V. Svenson worked hard in their small blacksmith’s workshop in central Stockholm to develop kerosene stoves. In March 1892 they started to produce the very first soot-free kerosene stove. They called it ’Primus’.
In 1897 Andrée took a Primus stove with him when he made his attempt to reach the North Pole in a hot-air balloon. In 1911 Roald Amundsen had a Primus stove with him when he reached the South Pole. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 29 May 1953. They prepared their food on a stove from Primus. The same kind of stove has been used by Japanese women to cook their rice and by Bedouins to make their tea. In some African villages the Primus stove was the main and often the only household appliance they had. The 1930s saw the launch of LPG gas and the first LPG stove was made in 1938. In the 1940s and 1950s Primus developed LPG stoves, LPG lanterns and LPG cylinders.
Quality takes time, but it is definitely worth it in the long run. Primus OmniFuel has been named the best outdoor stove by Outdoor Magazin, the most popular outdoor magazine in Europe. Seven years running! OmniFuel is our most advanced multifuel stove and has been developed with the help of leading adventure seekers for many years. Lindqvist and Svenson sold their first stoves themselves. They knocked on doors and found many of their customers in the open air, among women stallholders standing out in the freezing cold. After a while they came into contact with B.A. Hjorth, who was interested in their invention and signed a contract to sell their stoves exclusively. In the very first year Primus stoves were exported to Norway and success was assured.
