College Life Live Debrief SEXUAL MISCONDUCT, CHILD ABUSE AND MANDATORY REPORTING STATEMENT The University is committed to combating child abuse or neglect and sexual misconduct. As a result, you should know that University faculty and staff members are required to report any instances of sexual misconduct, including harassment and sexual violence, to the University’s Title IX office so that the victim may be provided appropriate resources and support options.

Also, in the State of Florida, any person who knows, or has reasonable cause to suspect, that someone under the age of 18 is being abused (which includes sexual abuse), abandoned or neglected, must immediately report this information to the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) in order that no harm comes to them.

What this means is that all faculty, staff, and student leaders, including Peer Advisors and Panther Camp Facilitators, are required to report any of these types of incidents that are directly shared with us, or of which we are somehow made aware.

There are University employees who do not have this reporting responsibility and can maintain confidentiality. The Victim Empowerment Program provides free and confidential support services to students, faculty, and staff who have experienced actual or threatened violence in the form of sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking, among others. Victim Advocate Counselors are located in the Counseling Center and available during walk-in hours or by appointment. They are also available for crisis response 24/7 by calling 305-348-2277(CAPS).

3 Easy Steps!

1. Meet with YOUR Academic Advisor

 Login to my.fiu.edu, click on student center and then go to your Panther Success Network to request an appointment with your academic advisor.

2. Submit Documents  Provide course syllabi to your academic advisor.  Syllabi taken from a website must include the URL (web address).  International Students: Course descriptions and syllabi from institutions in a language other than English must be officially translated (certified translator or translating agency). Translations must be accompanied by copies of original descriptions and/or syllabi in the native language. Keep original documents for your own records!

3. Follow-Up!  Equivalency updates are posted on your Panther Degree Audit (PDA).  To view your PDA: Go to my.fiu.edu, under Academic Advisement.  Follow up with your academic advisor, if needed.  Allow up to two weeks for processing, three weeks for international courses.

GORDON RULE with WRITING (GRW) REQUIREMENT Students are required to demonstrate college-level writing skills through six semester hours of Gordon Rule Writing-designated courses (GRW). To fulfill this requirement, students can select any two GRW-designated courses in the University Core Curriculum. These courses can be from the same or different categories.

COMMUNICATION Placement into ENC 1101 will be based on unweighted high school grade point average (GPA). Meet with your academic advisor to determine if you will be required to take ENC 1930 Essay Writing prior to enrollment in ENC 1101.

The Florida International University Agroecology Program integrates science-based education, research, and outreach in the fields of agriculture and natural resources. The program consists of specialized agroecology courses, field trips, internships, undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, and training workshops.

What We Offer

 Agri-Science Major The Environmental Studies: Agri-Science Major Bachelor of Science degree follows a curriculum structured for students to gain broad academic knowledge and experience invaluable to the pursuit of careers in environmental professions or in advanced agricultural sciences fields.

 Agroecology Certificate

Learn problems and issues that emerge from the interface between agriculture, natural ecosystems, and urban areas! The program includes farm and field-level experiential learning through internships, field demonstrations, and minor experiments.

 Undergraduate Scholarships and Graduate Fellowships

College scholarship opportunities available and geared towards Hispanic and minority FIU students enrolled in the Environmental Studies Agri-Science Major or the Agroecology Certificate Program.

Graduate fellowships available to those wishing to seek a Master of Science in Environmental Studies or a Ph.D. in Earth System Science.

 Clubs and Workshops Participate in student clubs such as Garden Club, Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS), and South Florida Beekeeping Association!

When students are going through difficult times, FIU has your back. For this reason, the Student Ambassadors work on bringing philanthropic awareness and raising funds to help our fellow panthers in times of crisis. For example, Aldo Amenta, one of our recent graduates, benefited from the help of the Student Emergency Fund in order to stay in school after suffering from a debilitating spinal injury. He just recently was able to walk across the stage on his graduation. His story is just one of the hundreds of students this fund has helped.
