A surreal journey: Night kayaking at Biscayne Bay Campus takes you on a surreal hour-long journey through Biscayne Bay under the full moon. Kayaks are outfitted with LED lights that illuminate the surrounding mangrove canopies and seafloor, allowing for a view of the wildlife all around you. Best part of all, there’s no sticky sunscreen.

At FIU, you’ll take classes and make friends with students from all over the world, in the spectacularly lush settings of our Modesto A. Maidique and Biscayne Bay campuses. You’ll do it while being 30 minutes from South Beach and the Atlantic Ocean, the Everglades and downtown. Heck, you’re only four hours away from Key West.

Go beyond what’s expected. As one of the 10 largest public universities in the country in one of the most diverse communities in the United States, we’re able to offer you

Worlds Ahead opportunities that other universities can’t.

Descend on Aquarius: FIU runs the world’s only undersea research lab – Aquarius Reef Base. Deployed 60 feet beneath the surface, Aquarius provides unparalleled means to study the ocean, test and develop state-of-the-art undersea technology, and engage the world’s imagination. Our students have strapped on their gear alongside Fabien Cousteau, NASA astronauts, Today Show reporters and Entourage actor Adrian Grenier.

South Florida is our living laboratory, but your opportunities won’t end at the county line. Our faculty and students conduct research all over the world, practicing collaborative problem solving with local and global communities. FIU is made up of men and women who are smart, creative and inspired. Our research generates results. It’s a powerful combination.

Chillin’ in the Arctic: In the summer of 2013, scientist and Ph.D. student Mark Barton went to Barrow, Alaska, to collect fish and invertebrates along the Chukchi and Beaufort coast. His research will help establish a baseline to measure environmental and anthropogenic change in the Arctic.

From MMC to Wall Street: Students train for a job in the financial services industry in the State Farm Financial Literacy Lab in the College of Business complex at Modesto A. Maidique Campus. This trading, research and teaching facility has 50 high-end, networked, workstations with dual-screen monitors and is equipped with advanced audio/visual systems, plasma screens and a ticker tape with real-time data..

Prized mentors: Undergraduate biology student

Aneysis Gonzalez trained for two summers in the lab of Nobel Prize recipient Thomas Sudhof. Gonzalez investigated RIM binding protein, a type of protein that binds to other proteins but is not fully functioning in autistic patients.

We’ve got the only Wall of Wind you’ll find at a university. The massive machine generates wind speeds up to 157 miles per hour for purposes of testing the hurricane resiliency of everything from private homes to warehouses to light poles. By recreating Mother Nature’s fury, our researchers are helping build safer, storm-resistant communities around the world.

“Radiate FM is my home. I’ve met some of my closest friends here, my longtime boyfriend here. I love my sorority and other organizations, but I’ve learned everything through Radiate FM. The trick for me was finding the classes and activities that I was passionate about and making the most of them. Luckily, FIU was a place where I could explore all of those possibilities.” —Giancarlo Simpson, senior psychology and sociology major

Some straight talk here… in today’s competitive job market, relying on a college degree to secure a job out of college is not enough.

It’s okay, though,. we have an awesome portal that helps students obtain information about internships, identify helpful outside resources, and get inspired by success stories. And trust us—you won’t be fetching coffee at any of these internships. We have a job bank with more than 3,000 opportunities posted year-round, and we work hard to build relationships with Fortune 500 and other major corporations that recruit on campus. We also offer career counseling, resume critiques, professional networking events, and other workshops designed to get you ready for life after college.

We’ve got

you covered.

Your path to a sweet paycheck and a career you’ll love starts at FIU.

Building a Resume:

Do you know that graduates who enter the workforce with at least one internship under their belt earn about $11,400 more than those who don’t? And students with internships make a quicker transition from college to career and are more likely to receive a job offer when they graduate.

Be the change: At FIU, we connect people who want to change the world. We’re Worlds Ahead. Through our Office of Engagement (recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as a community-engaged institution), you can serve the community and engage in pressing issues, both locally and globally. The office oversees the nationally acclaimed partnership between FIU and Miami-Dade County Public Schools - The Education Effect. The initiative has transformed the lives of kids in Liberty City by addressing the pressing educational and social needs of students.

Setting a Gold Standard:

Maximilian Staedtler received his bachelor’s of International Business in Spring ’14 and, with two New York summer internships under his belt, was selected as Goldman Sachs’ first Campus Ambassador for FIU. Hard work at the firm and an escalator conversation with Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein led to a full-time position as a financial analyst. career.fiu.edu

Break away.

That’s when the real learning occurs. At FIU, we’ll challenge you to step outside your comfort zone and live your life as a citizen of the world. In fact, we’re so committed to graduating global citizens that we revised our undergraduate curriculum to make sure every student gets a Worlds Ahead global education. But that’s just one of the ways you’ll be encouraged to explore the world around

you.

Have passport, will travel: In 2013 five Alternative Breaks (aB) groups traveled to Nicaragua, the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, to work on issues ranging from health advocacy to reforestation.

Whether it’s participating in Tuesday Times Roundtable discussions, where students get together over lunch to discuss New York Times articles on global issues, or spending time in a country you’ve never visited as part of the university’s popular Alternative Breaks (aB) and Study Abroad programs, you’ll have many opportunities to put into practice the lessons you learn in the classroom.

We think of these opportunities as life-changing. Our students describe them differently:

Best. Trips. Ever. FIYou in China: Many students spend a semester in China as part of the Marriott Tianjin China Program in hospitality management. It’s part of a cooperative venture between FIU and Tianjin University of Commerce, which is located in China’s sixth-largest city. Students pay FIU in-state tuition rates for their Study Abroad courses and may use their FIU financial aid. Students who are not majoring in hospitality management can complete a minor in international hospitality studies in just one semester.

Student Andrew Hofmeyer was introduced to the concept of microfinancing through the course “Women, Culture and Economic Development.” Inspired by what he learned and encouraged by his teacher, he interned with the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, India.

That’s what greeted nine members of the university community who made FIU Alternative Breaks (aB) history in 2013 when they arrived in South Africa to work with children and adults with HIV/AIDS. Theirs was the first aB group at FIU to travel to the African continent.

13834_ADM_Viewbook2_outline.indd 13

In a remote jungle of Papua New Guinea, a tribe of former cannibals claims to be one of the Lost Tribes of Israel. Religious Studies Professor Tudor Parfitt, who has been tracking such Israelite movements around the world for more than two decades, took a group of students to Papua New Guinea in 2013 to continue his research with the Gogodala Tribe.

We took donations and volunteered at the Blue Roof HIV/AIDS Centre, where we were exposed to a different culture, various points of view, and important global issues such as young girls living with AIDS. I gained more than I gave. After this trip, I’m much more of a global citizen. Plus, I formed bonds that will last a lifetime.” — Valeria Paz, senior biology major

“Global learning has expanded my worldview, I was exposed to the conditions of the world, the nexus between nutrition, health and international economic development. It was eye-opening to learn about vital health issues that are virtually non-existent in the U.S. Here at FIU, I am surrounded by a wealth of resources, support and opportunities. Today, I see a clear direction for my pursuit of science education– all due to my first global learning course.” — Randy Juste, a junior chemistry major who received a USDA agroecology internship and is working with FIU’s organic garden and related research projects.

They study under our Knight Innovator in Residence; work in our Media Incubator Innovation Lab; get hands-on experience in our campaign classes and our very own faculty-managed, student-operated PR, advertising and marketing agency, the Bold Agency; and write real copy for major newspapers through the South Florida News Service.

Work hard. Play harder. At FIU, we offer a university experience as big as you decide to make it because we know college life is about much more than what you learn in the classroom. We’ve got more than 200 student clubs you can participate in. If you don’t find one that interests you, you can create one. We also bring the world’s most provocative thought leaders and entertainers to both campuses each year for concerts, lectures and workshops.

It’s all part of our Worlds Ahead, “think differently” philosophy. As an FIU student, you can attend any home game or match for free – and we’ve got 17 Division I sports teams for you to choose from. Just gather a group of friends and go. If you’d rather break a sweat of your own, we’ve got state-of-theart gyms on both campuses plus plenty of intramural teams. And if you live in one of our residence halls at Modesto A. Maidique Campus or Biscayne Bay Campus, all of these activities are just steps away.

Veterans

FIU recognizes the great sacrifice of all those who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. Our Veteran and Military Affairs office assists military veterans, students serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and eligible dependents receiving education benefits from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. In addition to student resources, the office frequently hosts events and gatherings, including regular barbecues on Fridays, for students serving in the military. Visit onestop.fiu.edu/additional-information/veterans for more information.

Take a selfie with Roary. It’s tradition. #fiupanthers

We are a young university, but we love our traditions: You’ll never see a Panther step on the university seal in front of the Graham Center – it’s really bad luck and you won’t graduate on time. That’s just one, but we’re always looking out for the next great tradition. Who knows, maybe you and your friends will create it.

For Good Grades at BBC, Panthers dip their toes in the waters of Biscayne Bay.

On Commencement Day: Before you conquer the world you must take one last photo in your cap and gown with the Panther.
