By Lee BowmanSnapper days have come and gone and we really could have used a few more
Some of us did great and I saw a few who got skunked but most importantly there were a ton of people that were able to get offshore and able to put some fish in the freezer and have some fun with some family and friends.
The kingfish have still been on the beach as well as on our reefs and wrecks. We have had a few members reporting some keeper sea bass inside of 15 miles but they have been weeding through quite a bit of small ones to get the keepers.
A fair handful of cobia have also been pulled off the wrecks in July The B-liners have been good but I'm finding the triggers have not been huge It is probably best to look for them deeper than 100’ You should expect to keep seeing kingfish for a little while longer and make sure when you are on the beach to watch for tarpon in the pogie pods.
My baits of choice for bottom fishing have been cuttlefish or squid using a double dropper loop and for the kings and tarpon pogies seem to be doing the trick

By Capt. Charlie FreemanAugust is the beginning of the real hurricane season here so pay close attention to the forecast But being a Florida Native, and only seeing snow 3 times in my 70 years (twice being when my wife made me go to Rhode Island in November), I'll take a hurricane over a blizzard anytime That being said, I plan on doing write ups on local bait and tackle shops, along with local fishing guides in the next several months.
So, Lets start this month with Amelia Island Bait & Tackle
Exactly one year after they purchased Amelia Island Bait and Tackle from the Johnson family they moved into their remodeled location four doors down from the original shop Throughout that year, they listened and learned a ton from our local fishing community and applied it to the new store
The customers range from pond hopping bass fishermen to deep dropping ledge anglers and everything in-between That’s the beauty of our island, they have it all, but with that said, it demands a wide range of bait and tackle and that’s what they stride to provide.
They doubled the selection of rods and reels and added a great variety of performance apparel including: HUK, Gillz, Tormentor and Atlantic Drift.
One of their favorite new additions is a back door allowing them to utilize the rear parking lot.
Now the customers can safely pull in next to their climate controlled bait shed and park
without having to worry about finding space in the front lot Easy in, easy out, and plenty of room
In addition, the bait shed has a fully insulated structure with an AC unit keeping the water temps at a healthy 74 degrees. No more evening shrimp boils fighting the Florida heat
With all of the live and fresh bait out of the shop and in the shed, it allows them to keep that fresh smell to match the new look
They would love to cater to the customers at all hours, its just not physically possible, but have figured out a solution by placing a bait vending machine in front which offers the basic frozen baits and tackle options to the after hour anglers
A couple things to look forward too are an order / pay in advance app for convenience Come Check them Out!
Amelia Island Bait & Tackle 1925 S. 14th Street Fernandina Beach, FL. (904) 277-0775
REPORT: Kingfish and Cudas will be found close to shore in numbers as will sharks Surf fishing will get Whiting and Pompano as the water temps will be right Cut shrimp and sand fleas will be the baits of choice.
If you are visiting the area, there are plenty of guides you can hire that will put you on the fish and make the trip enjoyable Just remember to tip them well for the job they do

By John "Chappy" ChapmanHope everyone out there is doing half as good as I am this year It’s been a crazy year and we are already halfway through it. The weather has been nuts all year, you would think with being sent home from work for 2 or 3 Covid vacations (exposed to coworkers who were positive and mandatory quarantine) I would have a freezer full of fish Well, that is not the case with the crazy weather we have been having, and it always falls on my time off it seems Anyway, just a little public service announcement I was fortunate enough to get the vaccine when it was first available to first responders and got my second shot in Feb then out of no where I contracted Covid and was down and out for a few days over the 4th of July weekend The symptoms were bad enough to keep me in bed for 3 full days but thank God I didn’t have breathing problems and did NOT have to be admitted to the hospital My daughter contracted and just had a head ache for three days Any way it’s a personal choice on
Vaccine or not but I’m in the go ahead and get it corner and say it certainly doesn’t hurt Sorry for the PSA, today was one of those days that are rare and extremely unusual kinda like a unicorn sighting My adult daughter who graduated from high school this year went fishing with me today (The fishing isn’t so unusual but here getting up at 0530 was extraordinary) We put in on the Northside of town in the Broward River at daylight and ran to the bank for an early morning trout top water bite. I hooked a nice trout over 20 inches with a one knocker spook

Pier & Surf
By Spencer BrogdenDon’t blink, or the year will be over! Here we are in August already, and the fall is just around the corner! But until that time, August will produce some nice fish in the surf The mullet have shown up, and with them the predators that eat them. The mullet tend to congregate in very shallow water very early in the morning and are easiest to catch at that time.
After catching them I fish them a few different ways My favorite way is using a simple Carolina rig using a 1-2 oz egg sinker, 20-25lb leader and a #4 wide bend hook I usually make the leader 8-12 inches The redfish, flounder, and speckled trout can be caught this way! Redfish tend to inhale the mullet and take off Flounder will thump it and just sit there and the speckled trout usually hit it
Continued from Page 7
Then after the sun came up we switched to fishing the oyster banks and then on to the grass lines of the flats with some jig heads and plastics. Kaitlyn lit into an 18 inch flounder Then I switched it up a little and started throwing a spinner bait with a slayer jig head and a gulp swimming mullet for a couple of outstanding redfish bites We had a great time on the water and fished the 0600 Dame Point High tide, so basically it was falling while we fished It was a great time fishing and after I reminded her how old she was now and that she was responsible for her own fishing
several times before swimming off with it so be patient with the hook set The other way I will fish the live mullet is by free lining it.
I simply tie my main line and leader together with a fg knot and use the same 20-25 lb leader and #4 wide bend. The mullet will swim on top of the water and this method will catch Spanish mackerel, bluefish and speckled trout as well Remember if you reel in a mullet that is bit clean in half it’s usually a bluefish
There are also a few whiting, pompano and black drum cruising the surf Sandfleas are my go to bait for these this time of year as the beach is covered with them! For those with kayaks, the tarpon and kings are also plentiful along the shore as they eat pogies and mulle Don’t forget to subscribe to th brokenreel23 YouTube page keep updated on the week water conditions and what biting! Until next month, tig lines.

license, she very dutifully pu out her FWC app and filled ou the necessary info to renew stuff, we were doing great righ until she says “Hey dad you th I could borrow your card”
Hope everyone up until now has had a fun and prosperous year, and hope that it continuous through the last half of the year Saw lots and lots of bait in the river and the water was actually pretty clear even with the crazy afternoon thunderboomers we’ve been tracking every afternoon. I think in August we will focus on some bait fishing and I’ll have an all-bait report next month Tight Lines everyone.
John ChapmanFreshwater Report
By Capt. Bert DeenerThe dog-days of summer are here, and the number of folks fishing has dropped off some Still, those who went did well. The rivers are all high and some are flooded, so spend time on ponds, lakes, the Okefenokee Swamp, or saltwater this weekend
Altamaha and Ocmulgee
Rivers - The river is still very swollen, but it didn’t stop Brentz McGhin from fishing an Altamaha River oxbow lake on Saturday He fished a few hours in the morning and caught 7 nice keeper bass up to 2 pounds He caught half on watermelonred YUM Dinger stickworms and half on a junebug oldschool curly-tail worm. With the slug of water from Elsa, the mullet bite hasn’t quite fired back off yet, but it should when it drops a little more. The river level on July 15th at the Abbeville gage on the Ocmulgee was 6 5 feet and cresting. The Doctortown gage on the Altamaha was 8 5 feet and rising
Satilla River - Forget it again this week. The river is too high to effectively fish The river level on July 15th at the Waycross gage was 14 1 feet and falling (79 degrees). The Atkinson gage was 13 0 feet (flood stage is 13 feet) and rising
St. Marys River - The Shady Bream Tournament trail held their first co-ed event on Saturday, and it was very wellattended Fishing was tough with the higher than usual water level, but even so it took 6 86 pounds (10 panfish) for Quentin
and Amanda to win the event Dale and Emma placed second with 6.70 pounds. Cory and Cheyenne placed third with 6.54 pounds. Their last Saturday tournament of the year is this coming Saturday (7/17) For this tournament only, bait will be allowed – not just artificial lures. Check out the Shady Bream Tournament trail on Facebook for more information The river level at the MacClenny gage on July 15th was 14 2 feet and falling
Local Ponds - Chad Lee fished an Alma area pond for a short time Friday evening and had a few small bass He fished on his lunch break Thursday and had one on a white fluke and then had a monster bass chase it in but not take it A group of Blackshear anglers fished a local pond on Saturday and caught a small bass They saw activity in the pond they fished but couldn’t get them to eat their offerings. For the best bites fish early or late or even at night (for bass and catfish)
Okefenokee Swamp - The effort this week has been low, but folks who went caught bowfin and pickerel on in-line spinners. The dog-days are a perfect time to get into lots of bowfin They aren’t the best on the table, but they are a blast to catch – especially when most other bites are slow. I’ve caught (and released) well over 100 bowfin during halfday trips in the heat of summer The best part is that you don’t have to get up early They bite best when the sun is high in the sky. I usually go about 9 and leave when the heat runs me off Try different colors of Dura-Spins until you figure out the best blade/skirt combination for the day. The jackfish, fire tiger, or crawfish baits will usually catch them You can either cast down the canal or troll if the surface trash isn’t too bad The water level rose after Elsa, but you should still be able to catch fish this weekend The latest water level (Folkston side) was 121 1 feet
Saltwater (GA Coast) - Don Harrison, Charles West, and a friend fished the St. Marys Jetties on Friday. They casted Assassin Sea Shads and Keitech swimbaits rigged on Jetty Jigs to the rocks on the outgoing tide and caught 8 keeper trout from 15 to 20 inches, 2 flounder (13 and 19 inches), and a 17-inch keeper redfish by working the entire length of the rocks on the ocean side At low tide they fished the deeper rocks with bucktails and caught, tagged, and released 5 big bull redfish to 43 1/2 inches Electric chicken and mulletcolored bucktails worked best for them
Electric chicken Keitechs and Texas Roach
Sea Shads were tops on the plastics. For guide trip information, call Capt Greg Hildreth at (912) 617-1980 or check out his website (georgiacharterfishing com) Check with the Jekyll Island Fishing Center (912-635-3556)

Thinkin' Outside the Tackle Box
By Trina Polkey Fluctuat nec mergitur- “She is tossed by the waves but does not sink.”
Painted on the pieces of wood that hang over my fireplace. A beautiful, heartfelt piece of art my daughter made for me And quite literally how I felt the first two days of snapper season and during the Greater Jax this year! Enough with the wind already – we want to fish! There is plenty of good fishing still left to come and the
kingfish haven't yet strayed too far away The beaches are rich with pogies and by the time you read this the kings should be back in after Elsa's little attitude ran them off for a bit
After you clear the first green can at the end of the jetties, go south then head to the beach You'll see some poles coming down from the dunes there about a mile south of the base of the rocks start watching for the pogy pods when you get in around 16 feet of water.
If the sun isn't quite all the way up they may still be down but you can see them on your fishfinder It will look like a relatively large red mass fishing being the only time in life that will be a desirable thing! If you see them pop or see the mass, throw your net! Once you get a couple of dozen, (don't overcrowd your Livewell), get busy fishing
You don't have to go far, many times we run over fish to get to fish Go back to the mouth of the
jetties, either side and put out a spread You'll want to use wire rigs that you can buy pre-made or make your own If making your own I'd look hard at using AFW 7 Strand so much easier to tie and super strong! Hit me up if you need help learning how
If you see the clean water line on the outgoing tide..fish it! Many a heart has been broken by a kingfish scooped up right there at the jetty rocks Back to the painting real quick though..my daughter made it for me because she admired my strength and resilience Little did we know that after quite the battle with irrational fear, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts, I would now be admiring hers Folks, don't go it alone Lean on your friends. Seek help. And seek God
Trina PolkeyIntracoastal St. Johns River
By Capt. John EggersAnother hot month water temps high and the reds can be lethargic in the heat of the day so I like to fish early and late You cannot always choose the perfect tides when fishing the low light periods and that can present a lot of different challenges that can be fun. We all like fishing that out going tide especially when its early in the morning but when its in the middle of the day it can be problem due the heat
High tides in the early mornings are a great time to explore with popping corks and top water lures around the icw and the surrounding mud flats that dry up at low tide. The shade of the morning and cooler water temps normally fire the reds trout and flounder up that aggressively feed during the low light periods of the day
Jigs tipped with mud minnows and live shrimp work equally as well When I have not so experienced clients and kids on board that just want to bend a rod just about every deeper water rock pile or bridge piling will be holding piles of mangrove snapper jacks and lady fish
Jigs tipped with mud minnows or dead shrimp will do the trick. Not only are the snapper aggressive feeders no matter what the tide is doing they are hands down among my favorite for fish tacos Dont let the dog days of summer get you get down just change your species and or tactics
Capt John Eggers
Intracoastal
By Capt. Todd PhilcoxSummer fishing on NE Florida’s inshore water can present some challenges due to heat, storms and higher water temperatures but persistence will pay off with some nice redfish and flounder.
Water temperatures in July ran a bit cooler than average after a cloudy and rain filled June, water temps remained in the low 80’s through mid July Fishing has been decent but finding action with redfish and flounder requires covering quite a bit of water as the fish tend to be scattered
Try to plan your fishing days, or days off, for those with a late morning low tide. I’ve found the last 3 hours of the falling tide through the first hour of the incoming to be the most productive for redfish. Flounder action has been decent through July, when they are your target,
fish the higher tide phases around weed edges that show a good tide rip
Flounder action should pick up this month along the docks and rocks in the St Johns river as well
The redfish bite throughout the summer has been challenging and slot size fish have been scattered, juvenile reds showed up in force in July and readily ate shrimp. I generally prefer active casting and working shrimp, mud minnows or finger mullet on jig heads, along weed edges, flats adjacent to creek runouts and some of the steeper drop-offs along the intracoastal Shrimp baits become more difficult to use this month and next as the increased quantity of smaller fish will clean your hook before a redfish or flounder gets a shot at your shrimp, I prefer larger mud minnows or finger mullet this time of year
Throughout August another productive technique will be to fish stationary baits, mud minnows, live finger mullet or cut mullet on fish finder rigs. Find banks along the intracoastal with bait activity and let your bait sit right in the middle of that activity, patience will pay off! The quantity of finger mullet increased greatly late in July and over the next
couple months they will be the optimal size to entice slot size and larger redfish as well as good size flounder to bite, using finger mullet will also exclude the smaller species from stealing your baits so bring along a cast net Boat traffic will continue to be heavy once the sun gets high in the sky, so, once again, get out early Be courteous to other fisherman as well, when cruising down the intercoastal give fisherman working the banks as much room as possible and when in creeks or shallower waters be sure to slow down to idle speed and once again give fellow fishing boats room Get out fishing, stay cool and be safe!

Welcome to the middle of summer!
The water temperatures are continuing to warm up and the average is still in the low to mid 80’s. We have had an above average rainfall and this keeps the water temperatures during med 90 degree days The wind seemed to settle down and helped with better off shore days
With warmer temperatures the Manatees continue to arrive in the North Florida waterways. I continue to remind all to be aware manatees and they will be in the shoreline areas and not only in manatee zones.
The river salinity is sitting around 12-18 PPT in the Reddi Point to downtown area and around 36 ppt. near to Mayport Ft George area With Tropical Storm Elsa affecting the area the near shore area of the North Florida Atlantic area causing the water clarity to turn somewhat cloudy but we are seeing improvement
We have seen some great tournaments during June and July and Kingfish Tournaments so far have seen great participation with the King Fish
participating!
The Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament at Jim King Park and Boat Ramp canceled the Down on The Dock Fishing Derby due to T.S. Elsa but the rest of the week went well
The Kingfish were caught but the search for the kingfish was a little bit of a challenge according to the anglers The winning fish for the general Tournament was caught by Spencer Ross and his team on Flossy with a 42 04 beauty The Aggregate was won by Scott Pope and his team on Tall Tale with 73.85 lbs. worth of King Fish
The Jr Angler was won with a 31.37 lb. king caught by Noah Snyder on the Cherokee Rose. The single Engine category went to Mark Feagle on Knotty Times with a nice 38 21 King! The best of the Lady’s was a 39 2 beauty caught by Brooke Anderson Fishing with the Fratt House Team
The Redfish Tournament winners were Megan Risk for the largest with 7 40 lbs and Frank Gregg won the spots division with 12 spots and the Kayak division went to Matt Long with a 7 20 lb redfish
The Spanish Mackerel division was interesting but not productive.
Several Spanish turned in to small kings at the biology tent but Michael Kreinest brought in a 4.1 lb. real Spanish to take the win! Congratulation to the winners and the anglers making it in the prize money A special salute to all the sponsors, Anglers, supporters and volunteers who make a great tournament!
The 42 annual GJKT will be the week of July 10-16 2022 The tournament realizes there are good ideas for the tournament and its future. The GJKT is not the same as other tournaments and we will never be the same
As well the other great tournaments are not exactly like
the GJKT. The tournament is open to ideas and suggestions. The Board of Directors are not ALL Kingfish Anglers but they all bring great value
The diversity of experience helps make the tournament great and they know great ideas and suggestions are always worth consideration. If you have suggestions or great ideas please contact me or any of the Board of Directors for the after action and kick off meeting they will have in August
The Mayport Community Center Construction is in progress. The Parks and Recreation Department has opened the park west of the Ferry complex for over flow parking. We were able to make it through Snapper days and the tournaments with little inconvenience
A contract for the dredge project for Oak Harbor Basin has been awarded and work has started but a small glitch in the pre-surveys has caused a small delay.. When using Oak Harbor Ramp use caution in the area but obstructions and closures are not anticipated
The installation of the new adaptive kayak launch and dock extension for Mandarin Park has started and there will be some closures and restrictions when the floating dock extension starts
New dock projects on the south bank area Jackson Street and Post Street continue to work
through permits and contracts
The Southbank dock additions and the Jackson St dock build has been given the notice to precede so construction barges will show up soon but first the docks will be being built in the shop first so although no direct visible work will be seen work is moving forward
We are working through the process to begin construction phases for the dredging of Burt Maxwell Boat Ramp, The construction of the new dock on the east side of the Jacksonville Zoo, the dredging of the Kayak access at Castaway Island Preserve, and a new fishing platform at River Road Park in San Marco.
A request for the 2021 Florida Inland Navigation District Grants were presented by Parks and Recreation on June 18. We should soon see if our requests were awarded

Offshore Deepwater
By Capt. Tim AltmanKingfish
In July the Kingfish bite has been strong from the beach all the way out to the 21 Bottom. The normal haunts for charter captains such as the Southeast Hole and the MR are holding large numbers of fish in the 8-12 pound range with an occasional “Smoker” caught
It is worthy to note that the MR is holding several large tiger sharks that love to eat your catch before it gets to the boat
So be aware the taxman is hungry in the MR Area Bait (Pogies) have been hit or miss somedays on the beach
Out of Mayport you will often find them just south of the poles off of Hanna Park or in the vicinity of the old Sea Turtle Inn which is now One Ocean Resort and Spa Out of Fernandina bait could be found in the Nassau Sound and Cumberland Sound.

The Red Snapper Debacle
What an amazing clandestine “goat-rope” the bureaucrats at NOAA created this year with their pseudo-science driven 3 day opening.
I’ve been interfacing with the South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council (SAFMC) members and Chairman about how they arrive at their decisions to impose restrictions or relax them with fisheries management From my simple South Georgia farm raised education this is how I understand the process from the board members enlightenment in our conversations.
The SAFMC board members are appointed by their state government to serve on the board to advise and propose to NOAA changes on rule-making with their regional fisheries management
Because SAFMC Members are appointed by elected officials, we have a redress system to “can” or remove them at the ballot box on state election days by voting for someone more inline with our views of logical
This leads you to questioning yourself with “Why are they so Jacked-Up then?” Well, this sounds like a reasonable process that we common-sense driven folks can address and fix the lunacy we now know as “American Red Snapper” closure, doesn’t it? No, not so fast my friend, here’s the dirty little secret as I understand it Because I’m restricted to 10001100 words in this article and that makes it prohibitive for me to get into why the Red Snapper Closure started in the first place, let’s concentrate and start with a few common-sense questions about the process of determining Red Snapper openings management / rulemaking or as we call them “Snapper Days”. How do they determine how many days we get?
From the SAFMC explanation it appears they consider the latest projected Red Snapper Biomass surveys / studies that are done by actually going out
These projected mortality discards count against the ACL. This discard death or “mortality rate” is a scientific formula that has some merit because lot of folks don’t know how to release them properly or have the proper equipment to do so But, The determination of how many fish are discarded provided to the SAFMC rule makers by the Southeast Fisheries Science Centeris nothing less than obscene!
How could they determine with any semblance of a scientific approach the amount of fish discarded? The answer is by “Observed Catches”.
Wait, so are they determining “Observable Catches”? Are out there watching me?
Is it reportable data from when the FWC officer when he/she checks my boat on the water?
Is it from FWC biologist checking my catches at the boat ramp or marina when I return?

I wanted to know, so I pressed the issue with SAFMC Members
To be frank, they weren’t absolutely sure and had to research it further to get the answer from the scientists The Fisheries Science Center in true used car salesman fashion tried to baffle folks with their explanation with $3 words and condescending language, but the bottom line is that they extrapolate this number from several data points including Commercial Fisherman mandatory reporting, FWC Biologist’s Reporting and the return of mailed out surveys
My answer to this is WHAT?
I’ve never received a survey nor has any of my family or friends, much less returned one
Only once have I seen a FWC biologist at my marina in the last 6 years Where are they getting their data from? What formula or algorithm are they using extrapolate a number to
determine “Observed Catches”?
The scientists won’t say nor will they divulge any information that will allow geeks like me to validate the accuracy of the information they provide to the SAFMC rulemakers
In summary, these are the facts as I understand them. The real untouchable bureaucrats are the agenda driven scientists at the Southeast fisheries Science Center.
While we fisherman all know these are inaccurate and skewed to promote an agenda, we aggressively express our cleareyed logic to the SAFMC The SAFMC answers with “we make decisions on the best available science”.
The obscenity of a government institution such as the Southeast Fisheries Science Center operation in a vacuum unchecked and unchallenged and with impunity is pure lunacy

Follow the Emerald Trail!
Follow me on this There are 67 counties in the state of Florida The St Johns River is 310 miles long. When it reaches Downtown Jacksonville 4 8 miles of the Rivers edge zone falls into a different world of River control. Just asking the question. Is this good control for Fishermen? Or is this bad control for Fishermen?
In Duval County the 19 member Jacksonville city council just voted to double the local option gas tax from 6 cents to 12 cents Part of this tax will generate over $130,000,000 00 for the Emerald Trail That’s a lot of gold The Emerald Trail is a nationally recognized centerpiece attracting people to Jacksonville
improvement, and management of the physical environment by developing community-based partnerships which empower people, businesses and organizations to promote environmental, economic and social well-being Our mission has been formally adopted by our Governing Board and is shared with the other 20 Groundwork Trusts across the country
At the same time there is another group Riverfront Parks Now that is also meeting throughout the County for additional input on how this 4 8 miles of our Rivers Edge zone WILL be controlled.

Palm Valley St. Augustine
By Capt. Cory SparksThe dog days of summer are here and the heat of the day will have you fishing early and late The bite will slow around lunch but should pick up after dinner, especially if an afternoon thunderstorm blows through quickly.
Fish will be chasing topwater plugs at first and last light in the Valley this month. Try throwing top waters at grass points and over oyster mounds on high tide stages During low tides, find concentrations of bait and work around the same areas where you see bait cruising through When throwing top water plugs, I like to use a mono leader in place of flurocarbon leader due to the mono’s slower sink rate A flurocarbon leader can dampen some of your lures action because it sinks faster. Either will work, but see if you notice a difference and try both out The results may surprise you!
The water temps are very warm and a rainy July has dirtied the clarity up This will have fish seeking cooler and cleaner water. Shrimp or mud minnows worked through creek bends and hol ill l t d and black dru along grass strikes from lures are you and loud spo and spinner b lures will hel offering when well due to They also crea vibration to as lure as well F
increase in size and numbers and nothing will beat a mud minnow or live finger mullet dragged on a ¼ oz jig head If you see bait, you better believe a flounder or two are underneath them this time of year
Oyster bars and shelly bottom will also hold large flounder so deal with the hang ups to find the sweet spot When you feel that THUMP, don’t get to big of a smile and let them eat for a few seconds before setting the hook
Also, Fishbites Dirty Boxer curly tails fished on a jig will drive the flatties nuts!
The action that tail gives off in the water is irresistible to flounder and you will pick up other species in the process as well with it Keep

Crescent Beach By Capt. Adam MorleyI have scoured the net for the best fish and fishing related puns out there and oh my cod are there some good ones!
I decided to put these together here just for the halibut but if you know of any that I missed just let minnow
They range from one-liners to long-liners, but they’re all catchy Even the most soFISHticated ichthyology jokes won’t leave many Floundering because they were scaled back for your enjoyment
Like the one posed as a question; what’s the best way to communicate with a fish? You drop it a line
But holy Mackerel you can get into treble talkin about dehookers and master baiters in a political de-bait. Speaking of politics, what’s the difference between a catfish and politician? One is a scum sucking bottom dweller, and the other is a fish (Ironic coming from me, I know)
Then there was the f between two fishermen, went mono Y mono
One ended up at the dock will probably regret it once sees the bill-fish.
As you can sea, there are pl of oppor-tuna-ities to lan good fish pun as long as don’t go overboard. I lear that as a Captain

did you know that even the Shakespeare Alpha series has a little drag inside them?
You beta believe it Now before someone wants to put my sheepsHEAD on a northern Pike I’ll give a quick report of what’s been happening in southern St
Johns County
The mullet have been plentiful in the flats and creeks with the redfish a flounder feeding on them
Genung’s Fish Camp has also started stocking live Croakers and the gator trout bite on them has been impressive, tail hook them under a popping cork for best results In the surf we have been getting steady whiting reports - between the catfish and sharks
But something I found unusual was the number of pompano reports we got from around the Matanzas inlet last month
They must be resident fish since the water is still too warm for the migration That’s all for not, catch ya later

The North Bank Docks downtown is complete and open to the public Boaters are making good use of the facility. As most of you know we had a grounded barge full of coal ash 1 5 miles off shore from Hanna Park
The city continues to monitor the progress and we have been in contact with the United States Coast Guard, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Department of Health and the company tasked with the recovery
Several tests of the water, the beaches and the ocean bottom have been conducted and at this time there are no known environmental or health concerns.
As always allow me to remind everyone to always check your boat and yourself Use of a lookout and being aware of your surroundings are always a priority. Invest in a QUALITY EPERB, File a float plan with someone that will miss you first so if things don’t go as planned, the search for you can be narrowed and recovery can be quicker
Take a safe boating course and do your part to activate our waterways! The Jacksonville Sail and Power Squadron, America’s Boating Club, continuously offers America’s Safe Boating Course at Lamb’s Yacht Center and classes have resumed monthly so check there web site for 2021
The cost of the classes to the student will continue to be reduced to an affordable $10 00 thanks to a donation from Jacksonville Marine Charities from proceeds from the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament The next class will be announced on the America’s Boating Club website at usps.org/localusps/Jackson.

Capt Jim SuberKayak Fishin' By
Will NeimannOne of the biggest challenges to kayak fishing in the summertime is the extreme heat
The Florida sun can be brutal, and dangerous. But, there are a few ways to beat the heat and reduce the risk for skin cancer
The most obvious way is to cover up as much as possible. Believe it or not, a good UV dryfit long sleeve will keep you cooler than a cotton t-shirt
The key is to get it wet, by either getting in the water or pouring water over your head
Wearing a face shield will protect your face and ears, but putting SPF50 on first is still a good idea
Wearing a pair of lightweight, convertible pants will protect your legs. The long legs can be removed to turn them into shorts Staying covered will dramatically reduce your risk for skin cancers.
Fishing in low light conditions is the second way to beat the heat The normal peak feeding time for most fish is dawn and dusk, so getting an early start or launching after the afternoon thunderstorms is prime time anyway.
While the sun is rising or setting, topwater plugs are the best lures to throw Rapala
Skitterwalks or Storm Chug
Bugs are my go to topwaters. I also always have a Mirrolure tied on, alternating what I throw until I figure out what the fish are looking for.
Grass lines at high tide and oyster beds at low tide will produce fish
The final way to beat the heat is
to fish after dark, making sure you follow the laws You need to have a headlight on at least, but it’s a good idea to use a 360 light
Fishing dock or bridge lights will produce trout, redfish, and flounder very regularly Throwing an Unfair Rip-NSlash, small paddletail crappie jigs, Ancient City Outdoors swimbaits, or Spook Jrs will be deadly in the lights
A Fishbites Fight Club Brawler or Butt Kicker bounced on the bottom will pull flounder. Most of the fish will be on the shadow line or in the shadow of the dock or bridge
Florida summers are hot, but don’t let that stop you from getting out there Good luck and tight lines, I’ll see ya out there.

Daytona Ormond Beach
By Capt. Jeff PattersonWe’re getting into our hottest month of the year and all kinds of great fishing! There’s already a lot of bait showing up in the intracoastal and out on the beach as well.
The fall mullet run is right around the corner so the bait will only get thicker Around the inlet we’re catching a bunch of nice size inshore mangroves up to 15-18” and Smaller mud minnows and finger mullet seem to be getting the bigger ones. We’re also catching quite a few flounder around the inlet and in the Intracoastal as well on these same baits.
The red fish bite has been hit and miss with slot fish and over slots using live croakers and pinfish Tarpon have been stacked out there by the hundreds some days and we’ve got them to bite but it’s tricky at times with all the boat traffic
Free lined croakers and pinfish have done the trick and some of these fish are over 100 lbs.
In the river snook have still been everywhere and a lot of very nice fish are being caught Season is closed until September but they are a blast and it really seems they are extra plentiful this year
Dock, bridges, and mangroves have all been holding a bunch of fish The tough part is getting them out of the structure Jacks are going to be around sea walls, docks, bridges, etc and we’ve been getting them from a couple pounds up to 10 or so on a variety of live baits
Trout have been all over the dock lights at night and a free lined shrimp is about a guarantee If you’re not getting them don’t hang out long and try multiple docks until you do Off the beach the sharks and bonita are thick right now and good for some drag screaming! You will see the bonita busting The surface and a small 1 oz vertical jig or metal jig worked very fast works almost every time

Understanding Braid
By Brett WarrenWhether you’re making the switch from monofilament line to braided line or learning to cast braid for the first time, it can get a little frustrating. You’ll have an option of choosing either 8 strand or 4 strand braided line
From a casting standpoint, the 8 s m c t
which in turn gives you more distance in your cast Remember, the smoother 8 strand is slicker, so wrapping your knot a few extra times is not a bad idea
The drawback for 8 strand, would be abrasion resistance
From that standpoint the 4 strand wins over when fishing structure or when abrasion could be an issue
When choosing a color for your braid, match your braid color to the reel you use for each specific type of fishing you do Surf fisherman generally prefer high visibility colors in an effort to keep birds from flying into their line and hopefully catch a swimmer’s eye you may be getting too close.
Inshore anglers want to match the water color in which their fishing Moss Green is a good all-around l h i f fi hi
color to blend in As temperatures cool the water clears up and you may want to switch to sliver/grey color
Offshore fisherman prefer the blue braid but at deeper depths it may not really matter. If you’re fishing gin clear water down south or in the Gulf the white or silver/grey seems to get the job done Remember braid is 1/3rd the diameter of mono meaning less water/current resistance and less wind resistance It also has no stretch which means you feel everything.
Use a mono or stretchable fluorocarbon leader for a little forgiveness on casts and hooksets and also to keep from spooking the fish

Hook It & Cook It
By Jeff AltmanKING OF THE FISH DIP
We just had the 41st Annual Greater Jacksonville Kingfish tournament the weather is hot and the off shore fishing is on fire There will be plenty of kings hitting the deck this month. Once you have a boat load of fish you're going to have to share with all of your friends so you might as well make them the best fish the they've ever had
The first thing you're going to need to do is smoke the fish on the grill Put the coals on one half of the grill so you have a hot side and a cold side or if you have a smoker that will work perfect Make sure you season the fish with some olive oil lemon juice and cajun seasoning You want to cook the fish between 225 and 250 degrees for about 45 minutes or until cooked thoroughly through Next you need to flake the fish and remove any bones. Now just follow these simple instructions and you will have the best dip you have ever eaten
Ingredients:
2 cups fresh smoked Flaked fish
One package Philadelphia cream cheese
8oz sour cream 1large onion finely chopped or grated
2tablespoons Cajun or blackened seasoning
2 tablespoons old bay
2-3 tab
