"Fishing"

Love it Or Hate It How to Fish and Enjoy it Too

Fishing is one of America's great outdoor activities that men would teach their children, but these days more and more women are getting into it too, it's a great thing Children love to learn, it's part of grow like the old saying (yo a kid a fish and he wi day, teach a kid to f will eat forever) so it's that the parents kno teach their kids

When people thi fishing they often thi so gross, slimy worm bugs this is no fun at you think in a positiv don't need to use worm use lures or other typ also they make all kin sprays so there is upside to almost every The best advice is to a chance and think po may surprise yourself Fishing is a great way family together, these do not spend enoug time with our kids, take them out chance will probably enjoy it

Kids these days spend way too much time indoors watching tv, playing video games they need to get outside in nature and see what is going on out there

The most important thing is that the parents learn how to fish first before they teach their kids because kids love to ask questions and if you don't know the answers well you know how that goes, because they expect you to know the answers So my advice to you is to do some research get books and

November is normally the big change in fishing here in Fernandina Beach and hopefully 2020 doesn't put its funk on the fishing.

Water will be cooling down to where the fish will be happy, You will have your pick of hungry fish inshore, the beach and offshore

Offshore the bottom fishing will be found closer to shore meaning shorter runs are needed and more time for fishing Grouper, Sea Bass and the non-existent (per the government) Red Snapper will be found on the reefs with the standard cut baits or live bait working well November also means schools of Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish showing up at times.

Those that do go out by the Gulf Stream might find a school of Sailfish, Wahoo, Tuna and Mahi Trolling plastics at high speeds or naturals like Ballyhoo at a slow speed are the two choices.

Beach fishing should be ending for Permit and Sharks depending on the water temp but an increase in Redfish, Black Drum along with Whiting

Fresh dead shrimp, sand fleas, clams all work as well as fish bites that you can find in most sporting good sections in places like Walmart (or just order online).

Fishing the St Mary's Jetties along with inside of them by Ft. Clinch in the channel will still find Bull Redfish, decent size

black drum and an occasional tarpon. Cut blue crab, clams, jumbo live shrimp, cut bait and big live finger mullet are some of the most popular baits used by the charter captains.

Use stout outfits as you will be fighting the current as well as the fish plus the heavy weights needed to keep your baits on the bottom

Inshore is where most fishermen will concentrate on as the slot Reds, Big Trout, fat Flounder and Sheepshead will be found in numbers a lot of the time. Live shrimp or mud minnows fished on a float rig or on a jig along mouths of creeks, broken structure around places like the two mills downtown and deep holes in the ICW will be places to be sure to hit.

High tides early and late in the day will find fish on the flats where local fly fishermen like like Trey Murry will be found And he has a knack in finding/catch redfish using flies he ties himself He both fishes out of his little boat or will wade fish for them

Freshwater fishing will be also improving Bass will be active at their usual daylight/evening times but will also be active once it stays cool during the day I did good last year using a chugger the night of the full moon last November catching four bass all between 2-4 lbs Not whoppers, but fun. Catfish and panfish will also be more active and readily available during the day

If you're new to the area, hire one of the excellent full time fishing guides we have on the island. They supply the rods, bait, boat and knowledge and want you to have the time of your life

You just supply your food and drink And don't forget to tip Go catch fresh fish to cook alongside the turkey for Thanksgiving and enjoy the holiday.

Charlies Trout

Fishin' S.E. Georgia

Altamaha River - I went over the river on Thursday and it was really muddy You can fish it if you want, but the other rivers will likely produce better bites

If the river comes down before it cools off, the bluegill and redbreast bites should be off the chain with all the high water we have had this year The river level was 6 1 feet and rising (71 degrees) at the Baxley gage, and 7 5 feet and falling at the Doctortown gage on October 22nd.

Ogeechee River - Donny Riner and Eddie Andrews skipped hunting on Thursday and fished the Ogeechee instead and were glad they did. They fished the Millen area and had a blast. They caught them on Satilla Spins, specifically colors that had green in them. Donny’s favorite is catalpa gold. They noticed that when the sun came out the fish bit well, and then they would shut off when the sun went behind the clouds They had fun catching about 30 redbreasts during the day They said that the river was a little full but still very fishable The river level at the Eden gage on October 22nd was 4 0 feet and steady, and the Midville gage was 2 3 feet and falling

Satilla River - The upper river is in great shape for a float trip Expect to drag a bunch if you fish from a boat The middle river is where you want to

concentrate from a boat this weekend. The river level on October 22nd at the Waycross guage was 5.1 feet and falling 74 degrees The Atkinson guage was 4 5 feet and falling

Savannah River - Tyler Finch and a friend fished the river on Tuesday and Wednesday and had an awesome catch They flung Satilla Spins to land 144 fish during the two days Many of their bluegills were approaching a pound They had about all the species of panfish that live in the river, and they even convinced several keeper bass to eat the small spinnerbait

The river level at the Clyo guage on October 22nd was 5 3 feet and falling

St. Marys River - Matt Rouse said that the upper river is right for fishing He fished from the bank near his house and flung a red / white Satilla Spin on Thursday evening He caught a keeper bass and a 3-pound bowfin in just 15 minutes of fishing. Catfishing should be good in the lower river. Put cut bait, shrimp, or worms on the bottom to catch a mixed bag of channels and white catfish. The river level at the Macclenny guage on October 22nd was 4 8 feet and rising Paradise Public Fishing Area near Tifton - Cason Smith bass fished on the area for a couple hours Friday afternoon and caught 3 bass up to 15 inches He lost a 3-pounder right at the bank, as well His best lure was a green pumpkin 4 1/2-inch Keitech Mad Wag worm Texasrigged with a 1/8-oz weight

The catfishing in the entrance ponds and Horseshoe 1 and 2 has remained good this week A few bream were caught with crickets in Lake Patrick from the pier and in the Horseshoe series of lakes from the bank The crappie fishing has been a little slow, but expect it to pick up during the next cool snap.

Local Ponds - Chad Lee had a

great day on Saturday, ending up catching 8 bass that were 5 pounds or more He knew it was going to be a good day when he had a 5-pounder on his first cast of the day with a Rat-L-trap He picked up the others throughout the day on a variety of lures, including a sexy shad crankbait, pink flukes, a copper-colored spinnerbait with gold blades, and frogs fished in slop. He also caught several smaller bass on Senkos I didn’t get any good crappie reports, but that bite should fire off any time now Fish the last two hours of daylight and you should get on some fish by trolling curly-tail grubs or drifting minnows under floats Okefenokee SwampThe Okefenokee Swamp staff said that nobody reported catching anything this week and very few went because of the high water level The current level is 121 37 feet, I like it in the low 120 range for the best fishing

Saltwater Georgia Coast - This week’s wind and huge tides were the bane for most trips this weekend and early week Capt Greg Hildreth and his daughter Logan got into the bull reds in the sounds last Friday Their fish were in the 20 to 30 pound range Cut bait worked best for them Conditions are improving at the time of writing this, and it looks like a pretty good weekend with reasonable tides and fishable winds Hopefully that will materialize

Quick sigh, now we are moving into my favorite time of year! Everyone is in the woods hunting, the boat traffic has slowed a little but the bite is on fire! Red fish are thick all along the Intracoastal waterways

The back creeks of our ICW have seen an excellent outgoing bite as well as the first of the incoming. Cut mullet and quartered crab are the go to baits at the moment. That said, plastics are just as productive and at times more effective

I have been using both molting and new penny gulp shrimp tipped on a chart green 1/4 ounce jig head The shrimp are still in our river so these baits are matching the hatch to a tee!

Moving on to Trout, wow two weeks ago you couldn't buy one Now, they are all over our region and they're feeding very aggressively

They have been hammering a variety of suspending baits and just turning on to top water baits such as skitter walks and spook Jr's. You will find that Trout have acquainted all of our creek mouths. Fish the first of the outgoing tide around structure. Look for clean water and make sure it is moving

Trout love using tidal flow as an

advantage to feed. Another useful tactic is a popping cork and an 18" to 24" leader with live shrimp to float over this structure Popping corks can be a huge advantage over a plain jig head while targeting oyster beds, rock piles and a multitude of structures Less hang ups means more time fishing

Next, Flounder are thick around the Blount Island area

Although it hasn't been a banner year, there are still some quality fish being found Most of the bigger Flounder are being caught around the Mayport inlet

That said, I look for there to be a decent run following behind the cooler water temps and upcoming cold fronts. The St. Johns river still has a bunch of shrimp hanging around. That's been a major factor in keeping flounder in our river.

If you find the shrimp you'll be all over the fish! As I've said many times, be sure to focus on clean water and fan cast structure to cover more ground

Lastly, we are still looking for a solid cold front Although we've seen what appeared to be the mullet run, Flounder are still hanging around

As soon as we get a good cold nor'easter, I look for these fish to push out, so be ready With that said, I hope to see you all on the water!

Reels Fishermen! How do you really feel? Resilient! Fishermen are Resilient!

On August 1, 2019 Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida announced the appointment of Dr. Julia Nesheiwat as Florida's first CRO (Chief Resiliency Officer). The CRO is tasked with preparing Florida for the Environmental, Physical, and Economic impacts of sea level rise. 67 counties in the state of Florida In Duval County the search for a Chief Resiliency

Officer is underway At this writing that position has not been filled At the 10/12/20 ADAPT- which is a production of WJCT Public Media held a panel discussion on “Activating a Resilient Future”

The moderator and Resiliency Coordinator for the NEFRC(Northeast Florida Regional Council) was Sean Lahav Rounding out the Panel 1 discussion that included Science, Law, & Policy was District 14 Jacksonville City Councilwoman Randy DeFoor and she also serves as an officer of the Executive Committee of the NEFRC Board of Directors

The 3rd panelist was Eric Summa, Chief of Planning and Environmental Policy Jacksonville, Army Corps of Engineers Mr Lahav in order to move the discussion forward asked both panelists to give their definition for Resiliency. Councilwoman DeFoor in her definition for Resiliency responded “Ability to withstand or recover from an adverse event in a short period of time”

Summa added to her definition that Resiliency is also the ability of a community to weather a storm To absorb and adapt for the next storm Mr Summa also added Resiliency is not Prevention

So, How is Resiliency being addressed in your County? Just asking the question. Who would be the Resilient Fisherman in your County?

In Duval County I’m reminded of an angler whose captured the hearts of 1000’s and will eventually grow to millions. He has been on radio, TV He helps with charity fishing tournaments. The Resilient Fisherman! Taylor Tight Lines and Screaming Reels

Keaton Beach, Florida - Capt Pat McGriff of One More Cast Guide Service wwwonemorecast net - Phone: 850-584-9145 reported some great trout fishing this week, despite the high winds. The east to northeast wind neutralizing the tide caused the trout to bite funny, resulting in the best bites being closer to the slack tides.

The 2 1/2 to 4 foot range produced most of his fish. The largest Trout on his charters this week was a 26 3/4-incher caught by Rick Prietz of Marianna, Florida. Redfish up to 25 inches were also mixed in the catch. All of their fish ate live pinfish rigged under Back Bay Thunder Floats

Well, the 2020 factor is still active and if you haven’t been surprised or had a feeling of "Wow I can’t believe this", stand by because you still have time We still technically have a month of hurricane season and what a season it has been so far!

We have been on the good side of the storm tracks this year and considering the number of storms, the number of actual hurricanes and the number of actual landfall storms we have definitely been lucky.

We have had some effects with higher than high tides that have actually caused flooding and serious surf action and rip currents during the last month and some days the surf has been very dirty The salinity in the waterway has fluctuated from 10 PPT on the outgoing tide at Mayport to 31 PPT on the incoming tide

Up river near JU the salinity has been from 1 to 10 PPT. The water temperature of the waterway is beginning to cool off and has gone down to the

high 70’s with cooler temps on the way The plans and activity of the downtown water front is beginning to show progress The new dock at Friendship Park is beginning to see boating visitors, the old damaged docks on the north bank have been removed

The new bulk head project at the Times Union Performing Arts Center has started and soon the new docks will be installed

The new docks for the south bank at River Place Tower area have cleared all permits and the contractor will start building new docks

The area around River City Brewery is being considered for development to include a condominium / restaurant This plan will still include having the St Johns Boat Ramp but the approach route may change some

The Museum of Arts and Science has been stated to move to the North Bank area and with the development of the lot J phase of the development around the stadium the development of

the waterfront at Metropolitan Park and the old shipyard is closer to reality but is changing too often to say what will actually be reality

Stay tuned! The City is in planning phase for our river Islands Exchange Island is going in to the next phase for more picnic pavilions and an overlook on the island and Reed Island across from Blount Island will soon be a boater access park with docks, picnic pavilions and nature trails.

With the great work of our Florida Fish and Wildlife Officers we are near working on grants to remove derelict vessels in the ICW, St. Johns River and Cedar Creek These projects are time consuming because of insuring the rights of the owners are considered then the process of getting grants, contractors and mobilization takes months to follow through The Waterways Commission has introduced legislation to help with floating structures

The City Council has introduced legislation to help with improving our maintenance of our boating access points as well as derelict vessel removals with $1 00 added to each vessel registration in Duval County These issues are in the legislative process so if you have a comment for or opposition now is the time to let your Council Member know how you feel.

We continue to improve our boating access locations all over the city The dredge project for Oak Harbor Basin is out for contract bids and work should start at the first of the year

The camera project at our boat ramps is working out great all of the cameras planned for the pilot locations and now if the contracting company can see positive use and support by the public we will work to add more locations

Be sure to check before you go at USBoatramps.com or go to your app store and get your US Boat Ramps app. The damage at the pump out station at Metropolitan Park Marina from storm action is waiting on a purchase order issue, the damaged buoy in Goodby's Creek has been replaced and we are working on a purchase order to repair the current break timbers at Lions Club Boat Ramp

The Waterways Commission has named a sub-committee to address speed zone requests and needs of the county This committee will be meeting soon to discuss and evaluate several slow speed zone request If this is something that concerns you as a boater or land owner stay connected with the public notices and stay involved. With all of the Patriot boat parades we have had over the past several months and the

activity the waterways has seen with raft ups and boating concerts it is obvious the boating world enjoys things to do and places to go in addition to fishing So the City of Jacksonville for the kickoff of the Christmas Season by joining us downtown for the Light Boat Parade that will take place on Saturday November 28 Sign up at www.specialevents.coj.net/SpecialEvents/Light-Boat-Parade.aspx

Decorate your boat any way you desire and enjoy a great festive evening on our downtown waterways with a fabulous fireworks show to cap off the evening

In closing I want to congratulate Chip Davis for another record breaking year benefiting the Jacksonville School for Autism and his success with a great Flounder Pounder Fishing Tournament. Again I want to continue to remind all that if you are aware of an event that will impact our waterway or if you are a member of a club or organization that is planning an event that will impact our waterway please let us know so we can help you with promoting

If you send the information to me at jsuber@coj net we will publish on the website and promote on Facebook pages The city of Jacksonville has several events around the city and Beaches that we are just not getting credit for as a community

We want to promote our city and our beaches as a city with great waterways and beaches with tournaments events and entertainment opportunities that are happening just not being included in the Big Picture.

As always allow me to remind everyone to always check your boat and yourself Use of a lookout and being aware of your surroundings are always a priority File a float plan with someone that will miss you first so the search for you can be narrowed and recovery can be quicker Take a safe boating course and do your part to activate our waterways! Flounder fishing is still good as the migration leaves the St Johns river headed out to the ocean. Docks rock piles just about any structure will hold flounder including feeder creeks and mud flats. 4 inch white fish bite paddle tails on a 3/8 oz red head jig will work best to cover water and will also get Red Fish and Trout bites too Mud minnows and or finger mullet will still be the favorite live bait and will also catch the other sought after species Reds will pile up in the creeks especially at low water feeding on live shrimp and will start schooling in the river and ICW areas Look for them at high water in the back of the flats with broken spartina grass pockets

At low they generally pour out of the creeks and school just outside of the creek mouths and stage until reentering on the incoming tide. If spooky dead stick quarter or half cut blue crab chunks and or live shrimp

Trout will be biting and

schooling from the jetties all the way downtown.

Look for deep eddies around the bridges and rock piles as well as docks from 10 to 20 feet for best results. They will be schooling so jigs and curly tail or paddle soft plastics will do the trick

Adjustable float rigs tipped with live shrimp or mud minnows will also be a great way to catch them

Zale Brzoska's Trout Minnesota Mike's Redfish

November fishing on Jacksonville’s inshore waters begins a transition to winter patterns, Redfish start to school up and move into the creeks and backwaters, Trout action will improve and Flounder will continue to be caught along the Intracoastal edges and in the creek holes

I’ll begin to push farther back into the creeks south of the St Johns river, all the way to Palm Valley as the water cools, preferably fishing the middle to the end of the outgoing tides On colder days I will favor a late afternoon low tide working around oyster mounds and the creek bend holes which will hold a great variety of fish including reds, Spotted Trout, Blackdrum, Sheepshead and Flounder.

As the days continue to get shorter and cooler the necessity to fish early mornings subsides, choose your time on the water now based more on tides and don’t hesitate to enjoy a sunny warm afternoon working your favorite creek

This month will offer the last opportunity for flood tide fishing

ntil next fall, pursuing tailing edfish up on the flooded grass ats.

Tides will be optimal from aturday the 14th thru Wednesday the 18th, if you fly sh, or have an interest in fly shing, flood tide fishing offers e best opportunity to stalk, ght and hook into 20-30” Redfish in shallow water

Bull Redfish action will slow but can still be found from the jetties up the river to the Dames Point bridge, fish the drop offs from 35-45 feet deep with cut crab, mullet or ladyfish, use ample weight to hold the bottom, circle hooks and heavy tackle Don’t be surprised if you tie into a bull red along the Intracoastal as well, they scatter and wander away from the river this month and will be caught along the deeper sections of the waterway

Live shrimp are my primary bait throughout the winter along with mud minnows, I fish those baits on a 1/8, 1/4 or 3/8-ounce jig, go lighter in the shallows so as not to spook fish Soaking cut blue crab on a circle hook will also payoff for Redfish throughout the cooler months Trout will aggressively strike swimming and diving plugs fished along the intercoastal banks in 4 to 8 feet of water, schools can be located by slow trolling those banks to cover a bit more ground. Get out fishing and enjoy some cooler days on the water! Give me a call if I can help get you out there.

Pumpkin fish is in order for this month's article Well I guess technically it would be turkey but I’m going with short fat pumpkin shaped Redfish

Such a great versatile fish to hunt for and great table fare I guess the Flounder are still pretty thick but now is a great time to concentrate on the slot size Reds Often, I tout top water but I will not even mention

it this article. The great thing about Redfish this year is they are prevalent in lots of places and can be caught in a huge variety of ways I for one do almost always go with artificial lures, jig heads and plastics but that isn't always feasible for when you take a younger more impatient fisher person with you

The pace of catching versus untangling lines and or equipment might be challenging as well The good thing is you can there are many different easy rigs to catch these guys and one of the simplest fool proof ways is just a flounder rig or one of the other thousands of names it is called.

Put a small half ounce sinker size depending on current and depth of fishing area then a swivel and then a 3/O or 4/O circle hook Once you have your rig figured out you can start looking for your bait of choice, I like a cut crab because of durability or cut mullet Lady

fish is excellent as well as something as simple as Publix shrimp if you get in a real bind

Once you have your bait straight, then where do you drop your line. Lot's of this depends on tide, but you can fish this way on any tide you want. If you catch yourself out on a super high tide like we have had lately then you might want to roll with this rig in some sparse grass along the edge of a thick grass line Reds use these grass lines to traverse like a fish interstate and a buffet line of all the stuff that is hiding in there

If you find yourself out at low tide then try this rig along the sides of a oyster bed or a corner in a creek where the rapid flow of the tide has made a cut along the bank

I've also had luck on the flats where the bottom may change contour or from a hard pan oyster like bottom to a mud bottom. One last thing that I didn't touch on in this article that

is important is what # test line you would use while fishing like this.

Docks and thick grass I wouldn't go any lower than 20# braid, while if fishing in a flat and when you have the ability to chase the fish then 10# is plenty I almost always use an 18 to 20 inch fluorocarbon leeder (not necessary) but that is just what I’ve always done

Thinking Outside the (Tackle) Box

Several years ago I became friends with the then editor of GAFF Magazine Peter Rumenik

He turned me on to the beauty of dragging Stretch 30's for Grouper in the Gulf and though I haven't been in a while, I fully intend on going this year The time is just about right!

There are many places to go but most of my experience has been just south of Dog Island near Carabelle. There is a public boat

ramp there along with a couple of private ramps. Once in, make your way around to the other side of Dog Island and out to about 40 feet of water

There is some nice natural bottom out there Then put out your Stretch 30’s and start trolling Red & white is always a good bet, but I think the colors are more for us and less for the fish You are trolling at about 34 mph, they are doing their little dance and pulling these fish up from the bottom

I feel like it is a reactionary strike and these guys aren’t concerned about the color of your lure I was amazed how well this technique worked... would’ve never thunk it. Just be careful! It’s bad enough to have an angry Grouper with one hook in his mouth, much less one with a treble hook in his mouth and another flopping around Good luck and happy fishing!

I hope everyone enjoyed October, which happened to be quite warm The water temps stayed in the upper 70's, which while is not bad it is not great either

For surf fishing, temps that range between 68-75 are absolutely prime for Pompano, Whiting, Redfish, Black Drum and Bluefish. So while October did not deliver the temps we were looking for, this month surely will Looking at the long term forecast we will have a lot of day with mid 70's for a high and low 60's to upper 50's for a low That is all we need to get the water temp to drop

they are not eating, you leave empty handed! The double hook pompano rigs work best I use 3-4 rods, placing each one at different depths and have multiple baits on them to find out where they are feeding and what they are feeding on.

Once you find out, place all the rods in the same area with the bait they want. The Whiting are not as picky, they will eat the shrimp, clam and sand fleas pretty much every day. The Redfish will eat the mullet and crab as well as shrimp. The Black Drum will also eat everything you use to target the pompano

Remember, the closer to the inlets and any type of jetties or structure, the better chance you have to get the Black Drum and Redfish November is definitely one of my favorite months to fish and I hope you will enjoy it as well Don't forget to check out my youtube page BROKENREEL23, I provide weekly surf fishing forecasts for our area Until next month, tight lines!

Keep in mind, cool nights here in northeast Florida mean cold nights in South and North Carolina The sooner it gets colder north of us, the faster the schools of Pompano head into our area Sand fleas are still plentiful and should be until the water stays in the 60's

Decker wit Bonefish caught at Hanna Park

The mullet tend to be fairly thick in the surf the first half of November and will definitely thin out as the water gets colder and they head south. If you want to target the Pompano, fresh clams, fresh shrimp, crab knuckles and sand fleas along with fish bites will be the buffet you will need

The reason I carry so many baits is because each day the pompano may target one bait over the other So if you only have one bait, and it's the one

Only Veterans Should Get Veterans Day Off

The other day, I was talking to a friend of mine, and they noted to me that their local library would be closed on Veterans Day She told me that she knows everyone that works in the library, and only one person is a veteran That's interesting isn't it? So why is the library closed? All the people there are not veterans, they are merely the beneficiaries of the blood, sweat, and tears which our veterans have provided us in this great civilization of ours. Then, she asked me a very interesting question; Why does everyone get to have a day off on Veterans Day?

She then mentioned that she didn't believe it wasn't fair that everyone got the day off on Veterans Day Indeed, I told here;

"I like your idea about that holiday only being for veterans, and no one else gets the day off. That actually makes a lot of sense to me "

You see, the other day I was at an air show, and the air show host noted that Veterans Day was coming up soon the following weekend He said to the crowd; "please stand up if you are a veteran or an active-duty member of the military of any branch " It was amazing the number of people who stood up, and everyone gave them a round of applause which they surely deserve Amongst the ground displays were World War II aircraft, Korean War aircraft, Vietnam vintage aircraft, and even modern-day fighter planes, they types used in Iraq or Afghanistan. It was great to see them honored and recognized amongst the crowd in this way. Next, the announcer said; "if you have a family member who is a veteran or in the active-duty in any branch of the

military please stand up " I was amazed, there were so very few people still sitting down We have a great country, a great country indeed Still, isn't Veterans Day their day, and if it is, how come everyone gets the day off, even those people who protested wars, or voted for candidates who are against our military and armed forces? For a good many people, I suppose they will take Veterans Day off, have a barbecue, and not even stop for 5 minutes to reflect all of those great

Americans who have risked their lives, or even died in the cause to preserve our country, or to protect the free world on our behalf. If you are going to take Veterans Day off, then maybe you should spend the day thanking everyone you know who is a veteran, inviting them over to your barbecue - they damn well deserve it Please consider all this and think on it

Offshore Fishin'

October is what I refer to as a “tweener” month for the party grounds inside 25 miles

The Kingfish have moved further offshore and normal bottom fish table-fare of larger Seabass and Grouper haven’t moved in yet For the Party Grounds we were sort of inbetween for my time sensitive shorter charters.

Though on these 4 & 6 hou charters I continue to b astounded at the sheer number of Red Snapper we catch an release

It is truly amazing how uninformed or blissfully ignoran our lawmakers are to allow th South Atlantic Marine Fisherie Council’s gross mismanagemen of our Red Snapper stock November is showing all th signs of being a banner mont for bottom fishing depths o 120ft to 170ft

As the Redfish bite dies down, switch gears and starting targeting Trout November is my favorite month to chase big gator Trout The big momma's move onto the flats and into the creeks.

They can be caught any time of the day but early morning and late evening are usually the most productive times. Top waters, paddle tails, hard baits, and popping corks with live or artificial shrimp are the best presentations to trick a Trout

Trout will be hanging out in the area creek mouths along the ICW, especially on the outgoing tide Position yourself to where you are casting into or across the water flow, allowing the bait to drift back to you

A Hackney Jr Belly or a Fishbites Butt Kicker are two great options for these areas A Storm Chug Bug or Rapala Skitterwalk are also very fun lures to use as trout are very keen to topwater activity.

Trout will be schooled up by size this time of year, but the biggest trout are often solitary swimmers. If you find one slot size Trout, you will very often be limited out just a few casts later I have caught my limit in just 6 casts multiple times in the creek mouths during November

Trout will also be stacked up on the flats They will be along the grass flats and islands at high

tide and in the pockets, cuts, and channels at low Along with my trusty Chug, a suspending Mirrolure, a Hackney Jr Belly, and a popping cork with a Fishbite's Fight Club Shrimp or live shrimp are the set ups I have rigged for the flats.

Move around until you find the schools, then make multiple casts into the school, until they move or stop biting, then move again and repeat process

Trout will be thick the next few weeks, so get out and bend that rod

Good luck and tight lines I’ll see you out there

Feel It Move

A fish that appears tired and lethargic needs some help If you simply toss it back in the water, it will likely sink and die Moving it back and forth in still water or facing it upstream in current will get its respiratory system back in operation a lot faster. Wait until you can feel the fish beginning to move on its own before letting it go.

Fishing Guana

excellent fishing conditions throughout the intracoastal waterway and the Guana lagoon

Sight fishing for skinny water reds is one of the best ways to take advantage of these conditions. Redfish get shallow in the backwaters while they seek out heat and stranded bait. I recommend shrimp patterns and crab patterns for artificial lures and fly. Many of the drum in our area are looking for high fat meals during the colder months to maximize their energy

One of the most common questions I’m asked is “What time of year has the best fishing?” I always reply “Year round ” The reason being there is always good fishing in our region, you just have to adapt with the season and target different species But, if I’m being honest one of my favorite times of year to fish is the cooling period heading into winter

The Fall Blitz takes place from late October through mid December. Water temperatures are falling and most of our inshore sport fish are feeding vigorously. The mullet are abundant and shrimp are beginning to head inshore to find warmer waters Excessive amounts of bait almost always means larger fish looming nearby There is plenty of dissolved oxygen in the cool water so predators become invigorated while their metabolism is peaking All these factors combine to create

Crustaceans are high in oil content and provide a vital source of food during the fall and winter Unweighted flies and soft plastic lures are great for sight casting to spooky, shallow water fish Be sure to lead the fish and let them find your presentation

The flounder bite is the best it’s been in a long time Mayport an St Augustine inlet have alread shown signs of a solid Flounde season and it should only ge better as the days grow shorte Target docks, oyster bars, har bottom and rock piles for thes flat fish. Spinner baits and finge mullet are Flounder favorite along with chartreuse gulp grub and swimming mullet Kee contact with the bottom an work slowly

Trout can be found virtuall anywhere during the Blitz prefer working creek mouths oyster bars and grass lines wit moving water between six t fifteen feet deep

I typically start with topwate plugs in the morning an evenings as well as hard plasti twitch baits during the highe light periods of the day. Wor slowly and methodically wit long pauses in your retrieve.

Surf Fishin'

Fall 2020 has arrived, time to hit the Beach

The most popular fish are Redfish and Pompano mixed in with other’s like Whiting, Bluefish, Sheepshead, and Black Drum Surf Fishing is a little different than fishing from boat When fishing the beach you must carry your stuff so you have to do planning on what you want

Most regular beach Fishermen buy a fishing cart from area tackle shops. Then the rods are a lot longer so you can get over the breakers plus I recommend a metal sand spike to hold you’re rod up so you can see the fish bite.

The rigs differ, rig’s have all kinds of different looks depending on what fish you are targeting Most fish should be Circle Hooked so if too small or big it's easier to remove the hook and not kill the fish

As far as surf fishing rods, the best is a 12ft, so you don't have to fight the surf and you can cast 100 to 300 yards to reach the fish. Most people use a 20lb braid line or 15lb mono line so you get the distance. The weights are different depending on how rough it is.

Some weights have wires called a sputnik break away or you can use pyramids or storm sinkers I recommend 3 to 4 ounces in most conditions As I am writing this month we are getting ready for a Fishing Tournament put on by Roy’s Surf Fishing Guide Service, Surf Fishing Challenge Follow me on Facebook for the winners or you can see them here next month

Good luck Fishing and we will see you on the Beach Happy Thanksgiving to you and your Family

Awesome fishing continues despite the crazy weather we’ve had with buckets of rain and gale force wind! In Ormond and Daytona Beach we’ve been catching Snook all over the place from docks to creek mouths and all of the area bridges with a bunch of big Snook being caught at night

Areas with strong currents from the very high flood tides we’ve had are great places to fish I’ve been doing awesome using artificial for Snook lately. YoZuri divers have been a favorite snook bait for years now!

Water temps have started cooling down over the last couple weeks and Seatrout started showing up with some nice 4-5 lb fish caught in the Intracoastal and the Tomoka basin Live free lined finger mullet have been working great

with a few Redfish along the way We’ve also been getting quite a few juvenile Tarpon in the basin using live finger mullet and even some topwater artificial lures.

Down around the inlet there’s been a bunch of Redfish both slot and some big bulls caught right around the inlet itself and the Intracoastal too.

Live finger mullet and blue crabs either halved or whole are good baits and you can even find the Reds fishing just off the edge of the channel in Ponce and new Smyrna just north and south of the inlet right now

There’s been some pretty big Tarpon scattered throughout these areas so keep an eye out for them rolling We’ve also caught some big Jacks up to 10 lbs or so around docks and sea walls are an awesome place to try

Water It’s what makes our state great It’s why we are “The Fishing Capital of the World” It’s what drives our economy and supports countless livelihoods

For many of us it was in our childhood that we first connected with water when we were introduced to fishing, family outings on the boat or trips to the beach. It could be saltwater, brackish, or fresh it doesn't matter. In Florida it's all connected, it's all vital to our health and overall quality of life. I owe the life I have to the Matanzas River, it's where I first fell in love with fishing

It was the body of water I logged my hours on to get my Captain's license and where I've spent the majority of my working life making a living I've done it all on this river; kayak fishing charters as a teenager (arguably the first to do so), flats fishing charters as a captain, Eco Tour guide, commercial fishing, and the most significant thing of all - I've been able to give my son the opportunity to experience the wonders the river has to offer for himself.

We are lucky on the Matanzas in that we were able to preserve the “buffer” along the west shore that enables the natural system to maintain healthy water quality

Because we know the best way to protect our rivers and waterways is to protect the green space, the land, around it

With Moses Creek conservation area, the Matanzas State Forest, and Faver Dykes State Park all along the west shore we can continue to enjoy what this river has to offer. But if we continue to neglect our state’s most precious resource in other areas the problems will seep into our backyard and the generation that comes after my son may not be as fortunate So let us remember a few quotes to inspire our decisions going forward: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better It's not ” And "When the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten and the last stream poisoned, you will realize that you cannot eat money” Protect what you love

Fishin' Tidbit

Live Bait Stays in Top Condition

Live bait stays in top condition longer if kept in a well with good circulation. Incoming water is always best, but if that's not possible, use an aerator. Warm water cannot hold as much oxygen as cool, so temperature is critical. In an aerated, noncirculating system, the water must be changed every few hours to remove waste material that replaces oxygen in the water.

Report

Cool seasonal changes are in the air! Water temps have dropped slightly and that means the Trout bite in Palm Valley will be picking up!

I love throwing Slayer S S T paddle tails on a ¼ oz jig head for trout all this month Root beer with a chartreuse tail is my go-to but any dark body with a flashy tail color will get their attention

This set up is my overall most versatile presentation in Palm Valley. You can throw it anytime of year and cover different levels of the water column. Landing it on the bank and sliding it off stealthy with a twitch in front of tailing Redfish, slow dragging the bottom for Flounder, or straight retrieving it higher in the water column for Trout to hit can all be utilized by this one simple set up

On falling tides, Trout will hold in cleaner water with run outs ripping near them On higher incoming water, search grass lines that have oyster mounds covered or clear visual current

running past an ambush point Trout will hang in the calm eddies behind these natural currents and ambush targets as they drift past.

If artificial isn’t your thing, then the tried and true “shrimp on a popping cork” will be more than productive. If you get into a bunch of small Trout, use a circle hook under your cork to eliminate deep hook sets and handle fish as minimally as you can Circle hooks and dehooking tools minimize stress on these small trout and save many of our future trophy fish from an early demise

There is still mullet around and reds will be closely following them Fish main ICW banks when we get good low tides and light wind Clients new and old to fishing are always amazed at the wakes and commotion a Redfish will create while giving themselves away in inches of water.

So many times, people say they never knew to look for the telltale signs of Redfish right in front of them Once you learn to identify these signs, the success rates of stalking these bank fish will go way up!

Enjoy the Fall weather and fish! It is a great time of the year here in North East Florida! Get outdoors and soak it up!

Maryland Crab Cakes

Growing up in the midAtlantic state of Maryland, the concept of having fish only Fridays was non-existent. In fact, no type of seafood was safe from consumption in our house on any given day. Admittedly, crab legs (snow or king) are quite delicious and lobster tails are pleasingly succulent But in my opinion, there is nothing like Maryland style crabcakes to bring a smile on your face and satisfaction to your tummy Below is the recipe for one of my all time favorite dishes If you're a seafood lover, try it and see

Maryland Style Crab Cakes

Ingredients

1- container of lump crab meat

16 or 20 oz.

2- drops of Worcestershire sauce

1- tablespoon of mayonnaise (do not use salad dressing)

1 -tablespoon of yellow mustard

1 - egg

2- teaspoons of pepper concentrate such as Jamaican's Hell Fire

Half pack of crumbled Saltine

crackers

Half teaspoon of Old Bay seasoning

Empty the contents of crab meat into a large mixing bowl Pick out any remaining pieces of shell fragments Mix in ingredients listed above with (clean) hands and form into patties as you would a hamburger

Placed patties into a hot frying pan layered, not filled, with hot cooking oil. Turn sides until golden brown. Serving portions depend upon the size you make your patties.

Some suggested side dishes are: Fried corn, green salad, yeast rolls

Take your pick or add your favorite dishes As far as drinks are concerned, try a mixture of Ginger Ale and White Grape juice or Blueberry Juice Bon Appetite!

Safety Tips When Fishing While Boating

One of the most pleasurable activities to do on the water with a boat is to go fishing. Recently boating and fishing have been rising in popularity and long recognized as true sporting activities.

Many people spend their leisure time fishing and boating, making their way to the water whenever they can squeeze in the opportunity

If you have never taken to the water before, it is best to get used to calmer seas before setting sail Here are a few safety tips for you to make sure your fish fishing trip is one to recall with fond memories.

1. Make sure that you choose an outboard motor that suits your boat. Choosing an outboard motor that is too powerful will overpower your boat and could lead to disaster Take note of your boat's power capabilities and choose one accordingly

2. When you are out on the water be courteous. The waterways are similar to highways, and there are certain rules and regulations you must follow in order to be safe You need to pay attention to others who are around you So make sure that you are aware of any other fishermen, swimmers and, of course, boats. If there are any notices or warning signs where you are fishing take note.

3. Take care to anchor your boat for optimum fishing results Doing this will both ensure that you end up with a good day's catch but will also make sure you remain safe while enjoying your fishing trip Moor your boat in a position

corresponding to any points or other landmarks

4. Make sure that you have all the appropriate kits that you need. This not only includes all your fishing tackle and safety kit, but also everything you need for your boat, such as your tachometer and anchors Also make sure that your battery and fuel will last the entire trip

5. Watch where you are going; don't get too caught up reading graphs and operating flashers while steering. As boating is similar to driving a car, you need to pay full attention to what you are doing

As much fun as the fishing experience surely is, your safety and that of your guests (and others on the water) should always take top priority If you take heed to these simple tips you're sure to have a fishing experience that will be pleasurable and have you

returning to the water time and time again!
