COTLANDāS salmon sector āstands on the cusp of something truly great,ā states the Scoļæ½sh Salmon Sustainability Charter. Hailed as a āgroundbreakingā roadmap for Scoļæ½sh salmon, the countryās number-one food export, this ambiļæ½ous document was published a year ago. The charter sets out the sectorās grand plan to lead the world in providing healthy, tasty, nutriļæ½ous food, produced in the most responsible and sustainable way. āWhat began a liļæ½le over 50 years ago as a simple croļæ½ing sideline has grown into a billion-pound-a-year naļæ½onal success story,ā wrote Tavish Scoļæ½, CEO of Salmon Scotland (which at the ļæ½me was known as the Scoļæ½sh Salmon Producers Organisaļæ½on, or SSPO). āAhead of us stands the opportunity to be a key contributor to Scotlandās target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 ā and aid the countryās post-Covid recovery and renewal.ā Salmon Scotlandās Sustainability Charter sets out how the sector intends to realise those beneļ¬ts, with ļ¬ve key pledges and 41 diļ¬erent acļæ½ons. āThe charter is just the start,ā the charter aļ¬rms: āThere is much work to be done now to establish a baseline, to put in place short-, medium- and long-term targets, and agree how and when to measure the progress made. But weāre ready to rise to the challenge.ā The charter is divided into ļ¬ve secļæ½ons covering animal welfare, environment, food, people and community, each with an overarching pledge: ⢠āWe will apply the highest standards of animal welfare;
⢠We will work conļæ½nuously to minimise our impact and ensure a healthy environment; ⢠We will produce healthy, nutriļæ½ous food with full traceability every step of the way; ⢠We will become the sector of choice for people looking to make a posiļæ½ve diļ¬erence; and ⢠We will be good neighbours in every way, increasing our posiļæ½ve social impact.ā Under each of these broad commitments lie many speciļ¬c and bold pledges, such as sourcing 100% of ļ¬sh feed ingredients from sustainable sources with full traceability of all ingredients, and improving pen structures to make sure all ļ¬sh are prevented from escaping. So, one year on, what progress has been made? In November, Salmon Scotland published an update on progress. Protecļæ½ng the environment Following Novemberās COP26 climate crisis summit in Glasgow, environmental pledges are right at the top of the agenda.
