“… They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people...” ~ Acts 2:46-47 (NIV) ~

LIFE IS BETTER WHEN WE’RE CONNECTED

Centuries ago John Fawcett was the pastor of a poor church in Wainsgate, England. Since he was a talented and dynamic preacher, he received an offer to be the pastor of a large, affluent church in London.

It was a great opportunity, but it presented a problem: He dearly loved the congregation in Wainsgate, and it was killing him to leave.

After he and his wife had packed away all their belongings, members of the church came to see them off.

During their good-byes, Mary Fawcett said to her husband, “John, I cannot bear to leave!”

He thought for a moment and said, “Neither can I.And so we won’t. This is our home and these are our people and this is where we’ll stay.”

John Fawcett spent his entire fifty-four-year ministry serving this one church. Shortly after making this decision, he wrote these words...

Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.

That’s the verse everyone knows. Here’s one of the other verses.

We share mutual woes, our mutual burdens bear; And often for each other flows the sympathizing tear.

There’s a reason why old-fashioned things like Sunday School and Small Group Bible classes and Home Bible Studies are still such a great idea. It’s not just about what we learn from the lesson. It’s about what we experience in community with others. In fact, it’s no coincidence that almost ten years ago we renamed this weekly newsletter “Connections.” And likewise, it is no coincidence that we named our New Member Seminar the “Connecting Seminar.”

It’s much more than just an advertising slogan:

Life is Better When We’re Connected!

Blessings on your week.As you attend your Sunday School Class or Small Group Bible Study, take time to that God for the friends you have there and look for ways you may be able to serve them better. I do look forward to seeing you this Sunday as we are now in Part Three of Good News for the Not So Good. We will look this weekend at Body Life.

P.S. Many of you are wondering where we stand currently on the major renovation project of our Sound System (ThatAll May Hear) at First Southern. You are aware that it will be a complete overhaul from the ground up. The price tag will be in the $135,000 price range. We will not go into debt on this project (In all of the years I have been a Pastor, I have never led a church into any debt. I have only led them out of debt that I inherited when I came as Pastor.)

We are now 2/3’s of the way though our campaign as of last Sunday and our giving stands today at $74,870.19. So, right now we are a little under 2/3’s of the way to meeting our goal.

Let me thank all who have sacrificed and given so far. How much you have given individually is not the issue. The faithfulness and sacrifice each of you have shown is what’s so impressive. Small or large gifts given out of love and devotion are a pleasing aroma of sacrifice before God! Let’s continue to pray that God will give us the resources necessary to meet the need and the faith to give them back.
