“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” ~ Proverbs 31:28 (NIV) ~

CALLYOUR MOTHER

Who knew? Apparently there is at least one shop or deli or store in Colorado where you can actually go to call your Mother. I don’t know why you would need to go there other than maybe they have extra-good telephone reception. One thing I do know however is that they have a large potential customer base:Afterall, we all came into this world by way of a mom!

There’s a story about a man who calls his mother and asks how she’s doing.

She says, “Not good. I’m very weak.”

He says, “Why are you weak?”

She says, “I haven’t eaten in 32 days.”

He says, “You haven’t eaten in 32 days? Why not?”

She says, “Because, I didn’t want my mouth to be full of food in case you should call.”

If your mother is still with you, there are many good reasons to call her. The first (and best) reason is so that she might be blessed and maybe even stay healthy as this old joke above suggests.

Asecond reason to call your mother is so that you may stay emotionally healthy.

Remember when AT&T used to tell us to reach and touch someone that a phone call was the next best thing to being there? Turns out, they were right.

Biological anthropologist Leslie Seltzer tested a group of 7-12 year old girls with an impromptu speech and series of math problems in front of a panel of strangers, sending their hearts racing and levels of cortisol a hormone associated with stress soaring.

Once stressed, one-third of the girls were comforted in person by their mothers specifically with hugs, an arm around the shoulders and the like.

One-third were left to watch an emotion-neutral 75-minute video.

The rest were handed a telephone. It was mom on the line, and the effect was dramatic.

Seltzer said: “The children who got to interact with their mothers had virtually the same hormonal response, whether they interacted in person or over the phone.”

This tells us something about the power of a mother’s words and the significance of her presence in the lives of her family. In Seltzer words, a mother’s mere words can have the same calming effect as a hug. Moms, remember this when you speak to your kids. Kids adolescents and adults alike remember this when you find yourself feeling down. Call your Mother!

Blessings on your week. Reach out and touch someone. Your mom is a great starting point! I do look forward to seeing you this Sunday as I continue my Sermon Series The Business of Living. We will look this weekend at Managing Your Relationships.

P.S. Did you know that Mother’s Day is the third most celebrated holiday in the world? Well, you do now! Only Christmas and Easter are more widely celebrated.

“When I was a child my mother said to me, ‘If you become a soldier, you’ll be a general. If you become a monk, you’ll end up as the Pope.’ Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso.” Pablo Picasso
