Three of the films released by his film production company Plan B Entertainment have won Oscars for Best Picture including The Departed, 12 Years a Slave and Moonlight.

Having got his start in acting on television dramas including the prime time soap opera Dallas in the late 1970s, it was his portrayal of a charming conman in the iconic film Thelma & Louise that his fame began to spread. Other movie roles soon followed, with Pitt

Moneyball (2011), and Rusty Ryan in the remake of Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and its sequels, also loom large in his filmography. Born in 1963 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, the son of a trucking company manager, he was raised in the mid-western state of Missouri. Brad says: “I grew up in Oklahoma and Missouri, and I just loved film. My folks would take us to the drive-in on summer nights, and we’d sit on the hood of the car. I just had this profound love for storytelling.” The eldest of three children, he has a younger sister and brother, his parents were staunchly religious and followed strict Baptist principles. “The latitude and longitudinal lines of where you are born determine your opportunity in life, and it’s not equal. We may have been created equal, but we’re not born equal. It’s a lot to do with luck and you have to pass that on.” At high school, Pitt dabbled in musical theatre and was a keen sportsman. He enrolled at the University of Missouri, following high school graduation, studying journalism and advertising. However, after discovering his love for acting at college he left before graduating and headed west to Los

Angeles and Hollywood to learn the craft before eventually winning low key roles in TV dramas including that hugely popular soap Dallas. But it was in 1991 that he got his first break on the big screen. His brief appearance in the surprise hit film Thelma & Louise (1991), in which he portrays a wickedly charming drifter who seduces one of the stars of the film Geena Davis and then steals her money before disappearing. “When you first get opportunities, suddenly you get surrounded by a lot of people who want to make money off you but also are there to help. But they start telling you so much what you need to be and what you need to do to maintain some idea of career maintenance.” explained. As well as taking roles in blockbuster movies such as the Ocean´s franchise with fellow lead male star George Clooney, Pitt is not afraid to stretch his acting talents and has appeared in films as challenging as Death, in Meet Joe Black, and agreeing to a cameo role in the surreal comic fantasy Being John Malkovich. In 1997, Pitt received a Golden Globe award and an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a visionary mental patient in Terry Gilliam’s

12 Monkeys. Later that same year Pitt to play Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrar in the film adaptation of the book, Seven Years in Tibet. In 2002, he earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his guest appearance in the sitcom Friends. Pitt is a major player in Hollywood as both an actor and producer, through his hugely successful production company Plan B Entertainment, whose first release was the epic war film Troy (2004), which itself starred Pitt, himself. As an actor, he has won and been nominated for Academy Awards (Oscars) for acting including Best Supporting Actor for 1996’s 12 Monkeys, and Best Actor for 2009’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Moneyball. In recent years his work as a producer won Plan B a Best Picture Oscar for backing the film in which he co-starred Moneyball, for 12 Years a Slave and in 2016’s The Big Short. So, while Pitt has had a successful film career in front of the camera and behind the camera as a producer he has lived in the public eye for many years and seen his private life endlessly watched and misreported, he remains a huge box office attraction with fans and film critics eagerly seeking news about his next role, whether its on screen or away from bright lights of Hollywood. His Plan B Entertainment company is seeking to release several films, while Pitt himself is appearing in just one or maybe two movie theatre films a year as he works on mini-series and films for streaming services such as Netflix including the dark comedy War Machine.

A collector ´s dream car from the 1930s the Mercedes-Benz 540 K THE 1930S WAS AN EXCITING TIME FOR THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY, WHICH PRODUCED SOME OF THE MOST DYNAMIC AND STYLISH CARS EVER MADE. EMBRACING THIS OPTIMISTIC MOOD, GERMAN LUXURY CAR MARKER MERCEDESBENZ INTRODUCED THE 500 K. THE CAR EPITOMISES THE GLAMOUR OF DRIVING, THEN AND NOW. Unveiled at the prestigious Paris Salon in October 1936, the Mercedes-Benz 540 K was hailed as conjuring up ‘visions of breath-taking exploits of racing cars and drivers of international fame, but also of superlative comfort and coachwork of exquisite beauty, fine paintwork, brightly polished metal, the finest hardwoods and leather – massive and yet outstandingly attractive bodies – in short: the car for the connoisseur’. The K represents ‘kompressor’, the supercharger that powered this handcrafted art deco cabriolet, and regarded absolute pinnacle of automotive desirability from the moment it was launched and now highly sought after by the modern enthusiast and collector. As one of a handful of roads cars built in the 1930s capable of reaching speeds of 100mph, Mercedes-Benz in the UK retained racing driver Goffredo ‘Freddy’ Zehender as technical adviser and works driver to demonstrate its supercharged power and speed. While Jan Melin noted in the book ‘Mercedes-Benz, The Supercharged 8-Cylinder Cars of the 1930s’, a mere fourhundred and nineteen 540 K chassis were built before production ended in 1940. A total of 11 catalogued body styles were created for the 540 K by Sindelfingen, with each one being a masterpiece of the coachbuilder’s art.

Technical Information • The Mercedes-Benz 540 K is powered by a 5.4-litre supercharged straight-eight engine. • Servo-assisted hydraulic brakes provide sufficient stopping power. • The cars’ coachwork was by created by Mercedes-Benz’s Sindelfingen division, synonymous with the supercharged eight cylinder luxury cars of the period.

itz Paris and Luxury Living Group introduced the official Ritz Paris Home Collection in the French capital back in 2017. The design concept sprang from an encounter between Ritz Paris and the visionary intuition of Alberto Vignatelli, CEO and Chairman of Luxury Living Group: “Ritz Paris is much more than a hotel, it’s an atmosphere, an art de vivre that allows itself the luxury of a timeless elegance, creativity, and eclecticism. Since the beginning it has been an icon of modernity and it has never followed the trends. It is this alchemy that makes it a unique, legendary place. Today, Luxury Living Group keeps this vision alive, bringing back its splendor in a contemporary dimension.” The collection comprises a line of furnishings and accessories that sketches out the unique and sophisticated lifestyle that has made, and continues to make, the Ritz Paris an epicenter of elegance. Inspired by the stylistic and grandiose atmosphere of the hotel it features pieces of timeless heritage. The collection is an interpretation of the Ritz Paris lifestyle. Going Green A look at what big labels are doing for the environment A Native American proverb says that “we do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” There are 7.6 billion people living in our world today, so exactly what are we doing for our children’s world? Large investments have been made on technological innovations in renewable energy sources. Last year alone, global investments amounted to $279.8 billion, with China as one of the leading investors. The transportation sector, particularly the passenger vehicle industry, has been most proactive. In 2017, sales of electric vehicles amounted to 1,223,600 units. This is a 58% increase from the previous year. China remains the leading market for electric vehicles with an overwhelming increase of 73% from 2016. With over 70,000 units sold between January and September of 2017, Tesla dominates this sector followed by Chinese BYD and BMW. Tesla’s Models S and X remain the preferred choices with their durable design and exemplary service. Complimentary to their cars, they have an extensive network of fast-charging Supercharge stations. Tesla also has an impressive selection of energy products which include solar panels, architecturally stunning solar

roofs and powerwall for energy storage. The brand’s commitment to the environment goes beyond their core products to using renewable energy in their own production facilities as well. Once completed, their Nevada-based Gigafactory will be 100% solar powered. Because, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk says, “when something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor.” As other labels in the sector lag behind, Aston Martin will soon step in with their fully electric sedan, the RapidE aimed at a luxury clientele that however wishes to be environmentally friendly. Investments on renewable energy sources alone are not enough, sustainability is of equal if not greater importance. Sustainability is based on three essential pillar: social, economic and environmental sustainability. This means that local community and environment must be protected. In China, market research conducted by Mintel documented that 58% of consumers were more likely to purchase ethical brands at premium price. Sustainability has found its way into leading names in the fashion industry, most notably with Kering, the company behind luxury labels like Gucci, Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen. Back in 2017, Kering launched their environmental and social standards strategy “Crafting Tomorrow’s Luxury.”

PERCENTAGE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY IN THE POWER SUPPLY OF LEADING TECH COMPANIES

The company has paid particular attention to the traceability of their raw materials, the reduction of environmental impact and creating a positive social impact in sourcing locations. CEO, François-Henri Pinault explained, “we are redesigning our business to continue to thrive and prosper sustainably into the future, while at the same time helping to transform the luxury sector and contributing to meet the significant social and environmental challenges of our generation.” Stella McCartney, one of the group’s labels, has always demonstrated her commitment to ethical values and responsible resources. Her collections do not feature animal products and are constantly exploring innovative ways to attain sustainability. Tourism industry has also been affected, for the better, by this environmentally-friendly approach. Sustainable tourism is fundamental in aiding social development of communities around the world whilst protecting the local cultural heritage and wildlife. Leading in this sector, is Marlon Brando’s The Brando on the idyllic French Polynesian island of Tetiaroa. The resort has received platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the highest level of green energy certification with an innovative sea water air conditioning system. The Brando’s mission of sustainable tourism is further demonstrated with numerous cultural tours offered. In Africa, &Beyond has become a standard with 29 lodges proving that modern safari can be

sustainable for future generations. They are also deeply involved with local communities as well as wildlife conservation programs. Six Senses Resorts are also instrumental when it comes to sustainability, they address worldwide issues on a local level. Six Senses are also committed to reducing environmental impact and carbon footprint with activities associated with their resorts. Their Sustainability Fund allocates funds to local communities and wildlife initiatives. By supporting sustainable tourism, we are acting responsibly to safeguard our planet. A study by the Harvard Business Review demonstrated how investor demand has caused an increase in transparency when in comes to company communication. Companies that used resources efficiently were found to produce higher investment returns in comparison to less resourceefficient companies. These companies also exhibited increased levels of innovation and entrepreneurship. Around the globe companies have adopted measures to environmental and social impact even if they do not necessarily operate in the energy sector. According to Greenpeace, most notable amongst these is Apple, who for the third year in a row has become the ‘greenest’ tech company in the world. 83% of Apple’s power supply comes from renewable energy sources. Companies included in Greenpeace’s report are known for transparency and regularity of reports.

AEQUOREA Creating new worlds from polluted oceans

CIVIC LEADERS OF THE WORLD’S CITIES FACE MAJOR CHALLENGES TO CREATE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AND PRODUCTIVE SPACES FOR MILLIONS OF PEOPLE TO LIVE AND WORK. AT PARIS-BASED VINCENT CALLEBAUT ARCHITECTURES, THEY HAVE IMAGINED THE FUTURE AND BELIEVE THEY HAVE AN ANSWER. UNUSUALLY, IT INVOLVES RECYCLING AND LIVING ON WATER. Ambitious plans to build a floating city created from rubbish pulled from the oceans have been created by the visionary and ecological architect Vincent Callebaut. Born in Belgium, but now based in Paris, France the star architect and his team at the eponymous Vincent Callebaut Architectures’ have imagined the Aequorea design concept. Aequorea involves constructing a futuristic city of 1,000 ocean skyscrapers made from 3D-printed plastic waste that extends 1km towards the seafloor. Aequorea would incorporate living spaces, science labs, offices, hotels, sports fields and farms across 250 floors and reach a depth of up to 1,000 meters. In this case, Aequorea is a fictional water city anchored offshore Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with its name is derived from the bioluminescent jellyfish, Aequorea Victoria. The radical underwater colony for ‘climate change refugees’ imagines self-sufficient, spiralling ‘oceanscrapers’ reaching to the sea floor from mangrove-covered marinas on the surface of the world’s oceans. Launching this concept, Callebaut published a letter ‘from the future’ written in 2065 by a fictional resident of the Aequorea, explaining that the new civilisation emerged as a result of the devastating effects of climate change. It’s an imaginative concept whose time may yet come.

Aequorea’s architecture would be made from algoplast, an invented composite material made from algae and rubbish. This repurposed material would be 3D printed to create 1,000 towers, accommodating up to 20,000 people, known as aquanauts. Instead of fossil fuels, citizens would sustain their aquatic life with new renewable energy sources, while using gill masks to breath underwater, according to the concept’s creator, Callebaut.

Polish artist and designer Igor Morski, who describes himself as an illustrator and image composer and now exhibitions curator, has opened a gallery and retail space in Palma, Mallorca in the Spanish Balearic Islands. The gallery showcases Igor’s art, and work and jewellery from his wide circle of talented friends and is a welcome addition to the island’s thriving creative scene. magazine

After graduating with honours from the School of Fine Art in Poznań, Poland in the late 1980s, Igor Morski worked for the state broadcasting company Polish Television, creating set designs for TV theatre, culture and news commentary shows. His advertising art has been commissioned by Saatchi & Saatchi Singapore, Saatchi & Saatchi Sydney and Abelson Taylor among others.

With a successful career as graphic designer, illustrator and set designer Polish artist Igor Morski is now best known for his thoughtful, surrealistic images, laden with hidden meanings about modern life. Describing himself as a ‘photocomposer’, his art has appeared in advertising, newspapers, cultural and news magazines. The work draws upon his commercial experience of using mixed media graphic art based on photo manipulation, drawing, and 3D. The work is all beautifully rendered. More recently, Igor opened a gallery and shop in the Mediterranean island of Mallorca in the old town area of the capital Palma. He’s filled the space with his own work and that of fellow magazine

artists including fellow-Polish artist and jewellery maker Ania Orska. Palma is believed to have more galleries per capita than any other Spanish city, and this fondness for nurturing artistic expression extends island wide. Igor has long had a relationship with Palma, holding exhibitions in the city over several years. For many years Igor’s work evolved through his intensive use of the Photoshop software programme, becoming very comfortable with the range of creative options it offered. Increasingly his work has used 3D programmes including Zbrush and Modo giving him previously unimaginable control over his images.

33

Located in the old town of Palma de Mallorca, the Igor Morski Gallery attracts international admirers and collectors of work by Igor himself and those of fellow artists and craftsman he admires. He is a winner of many prestigious awards including Communication Arts Excellence Award and Applied Arts Award. 34

Inspired by his long-term collaboration with the Polish current affairs magazine Wprost, Igor says his work there led him to a surrealist style after his editor at the time choose to use only graphics and photographs that had been digitally manipulated. Igor says: “This, I must admit, made a great impression, because people were not familiar with Photoshop, and many illustrations were taken literally, as if what was shown in the illustration was really true. This was especially true of photomontages with politicians. The fact that since then I have worked on photographic material has magazine

caused realism to appear in my work. The mere fact of depicting everything upside down has made me a surrealist.” Many of Igor’s creative ideas spring from the huge changes affecting today’s society including social media and our attachment to mobile phones and technology. Wonderfully surreal artworks that are extremely well-executed, Igor’s images invariably encourage the viewer to pause for thought, encouraging one to reflect on the story of our humanity that

Current trends in education The world is changing at an incredibly fast pace, it seems only natural that the way our children learn should also adjust to the change. Technology has made its way into classrooms around the globe, but even that is constantly evolving. Pedagogy has undergone a rapid change with a shift in methodologies, tools and priorities. Here we’ve taken a look at key trends in education for the 21st Century.

TECHNOLOGY-POWERED LEARNING

Technology enhances education. The past few years have seen a break from technology being taught as a subject to technology being used as a tool for learning. This, however is not limited to the integration of computers, Internet, whiteboards and tablets in the classroom. New trends in education see the incorporation of technology in classrooms in a few ways: First and foremost is Cloud Computing offering centralized storage that is accessible from anywhere. This combined with classroom management software such as Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Blackboard Learn or Edmodo have become the new standard. These collaborative teaching platforms allow content sharing, communication management, reduce costs and increase flexibility. Virtual and Augmented Reality are also becoming more and more popular inside classrooms. With tools like Google Expeditions students need not set foot outside the classroom to embark on a virtual reality field trip. They can learn about ancient civilizations, historic events or new discoveries through a more involved and interactive method. EARLY START

Maria Montessori broke ground in her day with her approach to pedagogy. The Montessori Method, embraced around the globe, stresses the development of a child’s abilities through practical play. Though her method may not be favored by the masses, she did stress the fact that “early childhood education is the key to the betterment of society.” Early childhood education refers to education in a child’s early years between the ages of 3 and 6. A recent study by the European Commission reaffirmed the benefits of early childhood education. According to their report, if solid foundations are laid in early years learning in later years is more effective and more likely to continue into adulthood, thus reducing the dropout rate. This is one of the key elements in the United States’ Strong Start for America’s Children Act. The bill aims to significantly expand access to quality education for toddlers and preschoolers in families of low and moderate income. In addition, their research demonstrated that investments in early education provide the highest rate of return. Along these lines, the Massachusetts-based National Bureau of Economic Research also concluded that toddlers who commence education at a younger age demonstrate substantially lower levels of difficulty, were less likely to be inattentive or hyperactive and possess higher levels of sociability. OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) further supported this. In their previous examinations of 15-year olds, it was noted that students who had attended preschool for a year or more scored higher in comparison to those who did not. An early start may be the norm, especially in families with working parents. However the fact remains that at least in most European nations the compulsory age for formal education is of six. This trend is not only being embraced in the United States. Earlier this year, magazine

Finnish schools have long been hailed for their outstanding educational system. Primary education in Finland ranks 1st in the 2017-2018 World Economic Forum. Finnish students continually hold top scores in the OECD’s PISA examinations which tests 15-year olds in areas of reading, mathematics and science. The OECD also noted that Finland has the smallest gap between the strongest and weakest pupils. In 2009, the dropout rate for a highschool student in Finland was a mere 9%. Schools in Finland are publicly funded and adhere to the same national program. Their focus since early childhood education is on ‘learning how to learn.’ Government agencies that oversee schools are composed of individuals with a background in education. In Finland, teachers are required to hold a master’s degree in education and hail from the top 10% of the nation’s graduates. A new reform has been introduced in 2016/2017 in order to keep up with the changing times thus preparing students for working life. Among the changes is a departure from traditional subjectcentered education, to a teaching by topic approach, called PhenomenonBased Learning. This means that courses incorporate a number of subjects (be they math, language and communication) in a central topic. The reform also incorporates a collaborative approach to teaching which sees students working together in small groups to solve problems. Finland’s schools will be on the spotlight with this new program underway, however with their track record it will be an interesting development to follow.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced a shift in this age from the age of 6 to 3. NEW METHODS

The way in which students are being taught is also evolving. Experiential and immersion learning have become mainstream but there are a few newcomers in this area as well. Project-Based Learning is one of the most popular choices. This methodology allows students to learn through the implementation of knowledge in order to achieve a solution. They are given a realworld problem and are tasked with finding appropriate solutions. This enhances their content knowledge, communication skills, creativity and critical. Asian countries like Singapore and Malaysia have embraced the method and integrated into their curricula.

PHENOMENON-BASED LEARNING (PHBL) HAS EMERGED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL SUBJECT CENTERED LEARNING AS IT IS DEEMED OUT-DATED TO MEET DEMANDS OF THE 21ST CENTURY. Instead of focusing on a single topic, Phenomenon-Based Learning incorporates a multidisciplinary approach fusing together multiple subjects allowing students to acquire more in-depth knowledge. This method embraces the interconnectedness of our world. This method had been particularly appreciated in Finland where it has become compuslory since the 2017/2018 academic year. Technology has seen school curricula with a higher focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, known as STEM. Poland has the fourth-largest pool of science graduates in Europe. In 2018, this is expected to change to accommodate arts and humanities to become STEAM. The Rhode Island School of Design has been a very active advocate for this since 2011 and more American institutes have begun to embrace it. LEARNING FOR LIFE

In recent years, youth unemployment has become a major problem. The International Labour Organization estimates that approximately around 75 million young adults are unemployed. A study published by McKinsley & Company explained that unemployment amongst young adults was largely due to a disconnect between the education students receive in universities and the actual skills that are required of them in the workplace.

According to them, 39% of employers list lack of skills as the principal reason behind vacancies in entry-level positions. Education-to-Employment Initiatives that are making headstart: The incorporation of technology-enabled tools with real-time information in higher education institutes to assist students with career advice. Students can digitally map out career and educational paths and view the demands of the labor market thus addressing the skill shortage. Institutes therefore reduce this gap between education and workplace. In the US, Stanford University students and administrators came up with four points to address the needs of employees: open loop university (no longer limiting university for your adults), paced education (breaking away from the standard four year course), purpose learning (where the focus in not on a specific major but on an objective) and lastly competence hubs (which place attention on skills acquired rather than on grades). Ecole 42 in France offers a revolutionized approach as a teacher-less university. Admission is highly selective and only merit-based, but with 80% of students securing a job before graduation (this climbs up to 100% after graduation) it is completely understandable. Italy’s Politecnico di Torino has demonstrated outstanding results with 94% of its graduates finding employment within a year of graduation. They have achieved this preparing a curriculum that balances specializations, partnerships with national and international companies and innovation.

Another sector at risk appertains to adults in older age groups. Adults aged 40 and older are more often than not in need of updating their skills in order to maintain their competitiveness. When it comes to digital literacy younger people are more proficient than their older peers. Graduation is no longer the of learning, instead it is simply another steo in this lifelong process. Digital corporate training has seen a sharp rise in recent years. Learning has gone beyond classrooms to smartphones and tablets accessible at anytime, especially among older age groups. Digital technologies have rendered education a flexible learning experience. Learning platforms such as Enterprise MOOCs and Google Digital Training offer employees a way to expand and acquire new skills. Poland had promoted a national wide strategy to promote digital skills especially in groups mostly at risk, like senior citizens and people with disabilites. In our ever changing world we can no longer afford to take our time, instead we must pick up the pace of technology and continue Learning for Life.

Poland’s Digital Strategy Poland has seen dramatic growth in the past two decades. In a move to improve education, it has allocated 170 million euro to the ‘Digital Poland’ strategy. ‘Digital Poland’ aims to address digital literacy, especially amongst older age groups and those with learning disabilities. Students with advanced knowledge will also benefit by the program with the organization of several competitions that will impact society and public policy. By the end of 2018, all Polish schools will have fast broadband Internet connection. Students will be required to coding lessons from first years of primary school. With this move, Poland estimates to increase their economic added value by a 13-22%.

BORSALINO A HISTORY OF CRAFTMANSHIP AND ELEGANCE

For over 160 years, generations of stylish men and women have worn hats created by master milliners Borsalino of Alessandria, northern Italy. The finely crafted hats have been favoured by Hollywood and music stars on-screen and offincluding the likes of Victoria Beckham, Alain Delon and David Bowie. Humphrey Bogart famously wore a Borsalino fedora in the iconic movie Casablanca. Borsalino hats combine modern elegance and craftsmanship with an industrial approach: over fifty steps, each done by hand over seven weeks, are needed to make a felt hat; straw hats are hand woven, and some hats can take up to six months to create.

Borsalino hat making is a skill passed down from generation to generation of master milliners.

Whether they are classic, modern or fun and quite eccentric, Borsalino hats are a strong statement in terms of an individual’s approach to style.

esigned with its own elevated dining and viewing platforms, tranquil gardens and even a private beach, the enormous 108M hybrid concept superyacht created by the prestigious Hareide Design from Norway is making waves in the contemporary yacht scene. Today’s mega yachts are most often designed like floating luxury hotels with interiors based on traditional luxury, which encouraged Hareide to shift the focus from internal structures and interior design to create a platform to experience the beauty of nature and the changing elements outside. In creating this concept, the designers wanted to offer guests a closer relationship with the outside environment and natural surroundings. spaces. The designers have created flexible internal areas allowing rooms to be converted from intimate spaces into open areas for parties and even musical concerts. Designed for a forward looking owner seeking green credentials as well as efficiency and comfort, the concept utilises power generation through solar cells when in port, and low exhaust emissions when sailing on the open seas. “Today’s megayachts are most often designed like floating luxury hotels with interiors based on traditional luxury. With this hybrid superyacht concept we want to shift the focus from extrovert admiration to creating a platform for actively experiencing the beauty of nature and the changing elements,’ says Einar Hareide, founder of Hareide Design, at the launch of the concept design. Eye-catching details include an elevated dining and viewing area, a tranquil garden surrounding a 20-metre

The concept interiors are minimalist, inside and out with the clean architectural lines characteristic of the Nordic thinking. The boat offers guests exceptional deck space aft and forward, with plenty of room for open areas and intimate seating arrangement, offering guests the choice of intimate corners for quiet contemplation. Seeking to minimise coverage of high efficiency solar panels, charging banks of high-efficiency lithium-ion batteries provide the ship with sustainable energy and enough power for slow cruising along quiet shorelines. For longer distance and higher speeds owners have the option for diesel-electric propulsion. Meanwhile, guests and visitors have access to a helipad, which comes in handy for quick access onshore and offshore.

TWO OF HOLLYWOOD’S GREATEST STARS TOM HANKS AND MERYL STREEP JOIN CREATIVE FORCES WITH DIRECTOR STEVEN SPIELBERG TO PLAY EMBATTLED LEADERS OF THE WASHINGTON POST, THEN AS NOW, ONE THE TOP NEWSPAPERS IN THE US IN A POWERFUL DOCUDRAMA MOVIE ABOUT HOW THE PENTAGON PAPERS SCANDAL FOR THE EARLY 1970S ALTERED AMERICAN JOURNALISM’S RELATIONSHIP WITH GOVERNMENT AND POWER.

T

hree of Hollywood’s greatest creative, Oscar winning artists have teamed up for the first time to create the multi-award wining film, The Post. Released around the world in late 2017, the subject of the film dates back to the 1970s and is based on a true story of brilliant investigative journalism, intrigue and political drama. The Post chronicles the efforts of the USnewspaper Washington Post’s publisher and editor to get the Pentagon Papers – classified documents about a US government cover-up of its actions in Vietnam – published. The film’s subject matter is weighty and serious, a retelling of a series of events that shook the US government and establishment to the core. The papers were volumes of an unexpectedly candid internal US government reports that proved successive administrations had lied about the war in Vietnam. The film is not groundbreaking or innovative in technique or form, but is a highly regarded piece of craftsmanship. The Vietnam War started in 1955 and last for the next two decades, becoming a proxy war for the Cold War between the then Soviet Union and the West, led by the US. It was a bombshell that revealed the White House knew it was fighting an unwinnable war. Spielberg consulted Daniel Ellsberg, the Rand Corporation strategic analyst who leaked the Pentagon Papers – a top-secret 7,000-page document detailing US strategy in southeast Asia from 1945 to 1967 – to New York Times journalist Neil Sheehan in 1971, about the film. The movie explores events that reference the war while it was still raging, shaking the American establishment as first the New York Times newspaper, followed by

The Washington Post published the papers. The Washington Post decided to publish the revelations after President Richard Nixon and the then Attorney General John Mitchell obtained a federal court injunction forcing the New York Times to halt publication after three instalments. Normally bitter rivals, the two papers responded by launching a legal challenge, appealing to the Supreme Court on First Amendment grounds. The court ruled that the government failed to prove a ‘harm’ to national security and that publication was justified by the First Amendment. What follows is a tense nervous thriller with a series of huge decisions to be made by the two main protagonists in the film - owner and publisher of The Washington Post Katharine Graham (played by Streep) and the hardnosed, highly experienced editor, Bill Bradlee. Determined to uphold the nation’s civil liberties, Graham and Bradlee worked together to expose the decades-long cover-up, risking the paper’s reputation, financial health and even jail time should they opt to publish the secret documents. Ultimately, at stake is the Freedom of the Press, an ideal fully supported by the ethics of the Post’s board of directors. The Post is a thrilling, intelligent film.

The Post (2017) The Post stars Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks as Katharine Graham and Ben Bradlee of the Washington Post, respectively publisher and editor, who challenged the White House of President Nixon in 1971 to publish the Pentagon Papers, the US Department of Defense’s secret history of the Vietnam war. The film was made with a $50m budget and released worldwide in December 2017.

Meryl Streep

AS KAY GRAHAM No film shaped the American memory of (President Richard) Nixon’s era in US politics more than All the President’s Men, the 1976 movie about The Washington Post’s investigation into the Watergate scandal that ultimately drove President Richard Nixon from office. Yet Katharine Graham, despite her influence as publisher of The Washington Post, didn’t make a single appearance in the movie. For Meryl Streep, who takes the role of newspaper published Katharine Graham in The Post, it was important to re-centre Graham as a central force in journalism during Nixon’s presidency. Though the leak of the Pentagon Papers that inspired the film’s scriptwriters took place a year before the Watergate break-in, Graham’s influence over the paper — and over US politics in general — would only loom larger in the coming years. “Our history about The Washington Post largely formed by All the President’s Men, in which she doesn’t appear,” Streep said, speaking at the film’s premiere. “And she was responsible for the courageous stance that the reporters were able to take.” Mary Louise Streep was born on June 22, 1949 in Summit, New Jersey to pharmaceutical company executive Harry Streep and his wife commercial artist Mary. A keen actress from an early age, Meryl was involved with school drama productions and she was soon hooked on becoming an actress. With close to 60 years of acting history, it’s tricky to fully credit Streep’s huge back catalogue and credits in anything less than a full biography. The Post’s plot line revolves around the desire to uphold the USA’s civil liberties with Streep’s character as publisher of The Washington Post, and hard-nosed and highly experienced editor Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) joining forces to expose a decades-long cover-up. Senior figures in the US government’s administration launched a legal challenge to halt their publication. That left Graham and Bradlee with the huge decision of publishing the papers and facing charges of Contempt or halt publication for the apparent safety of the paper and careers. Daniel Ellsberg, the Rand Corporation strategic analyst at the centre of Pentagon Papers, decision to leak the papers

MERYL STREEP Hollywood actress Meryl Streep has won multiple awards for her acting prowess, including in 2010 receiving the National Medal of the Arts from incumbent president Barack Obama. Later, in 2014 she was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her contribution to cinema and the arts led the government of France to bestow on her the prestigious title, Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters.

64

ultimately led to the landmark showdown between the White House and the news media. It culminated in a June 30, 1971 decision that the government did not meet the threshold required to obtain an injunction to prevent their release. The two main protagonists formed an unlikely partnership, working together and risking their careers and the future of the newspaper and hundreds of their co-workers to bring truth to their readership and ultimately to powerful people in government. Interestingly, the papers were first published in an explosive scoop fashion by the New York Times newspapers, but it was the newly appointed Washington Post owner, often referred as Kay Graham, still adjusting to the responsibilities of taking over her late husband’s business and the editor Ben Bradlee who only later fully embraced the implications of the story and committed significant journalism resources to investigating and uncovering the true extent of what lay behind headlines of The Pentagon Papers story. In playing the role of Katharine Graham, Streep was representing someone who during her professional life at the Post was often described as one of the most powerful women in America. Graham was particularly fond of the expression, saying that it made her sound like a weightlifter. Her role as president and later chief operating officer of the Washington Post Company, which also owned Newsweek magazine and a number of television and radio stations, saw the group prosper both as an independent publisher of news and comment and as a businesses. By then she had reached the age of 46 as a wealthy housewife, the mother of four children, and the wife of the Washington Post publisher Phil Graham. However, at that time, she took no active interest in running the business. It was when her husband Phil, a close friend of John F Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, tragically committed suicide, that Katharine took control of the newspaper and associated media. She did this to such effect that she steered the paper through its transformation into a public company in 1971 and through strikes against new technology. Today, her time working with The Washington Post is chiefly remembered for her groundbreaking work on publishing the Pentagon Papers and the Watergate scandal. Many film critics over those decades have described Streep as being one of the greatest actress of her time, continually reinventing herself over the course of her career, following new, unexpected new directions and never doing the obvious, often to surprising results. She remains a performer on the highest level and, quite deservingly, an icon on the evidence of this new piece of work.

magazine

Oscar winning actress Meryl Streep took the role of Katherine Graham after being entranced by the energy, mind, grace, humour, and humility famously displayed by the publisher of The Washington Post, tracing her professional journey from a Georgetown, Washington society hostess to a staunch defender of press freedom, while overcoming deeply entrenched sexism in the process. This is the first time that the Streep, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have worked on film as a team.

In a key moment during the movie, editor Ben Bradlee, says: “The only way to protect the right to publish is to publish.” It was this sentiment that Katharine Graham based her decisions made in the Washington Post’s newsroom that the paper had to publish the Pentagon Papers and informs the structure of this timely movie.

Tom Hanks

AS BEN BRADLEE

Tom Hanks met Graham at the annual Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference on July 17, 2001 — the same day she died. “It was a total fluke,” he said. “Rita [Wilson] and I were invited by luck to sit next to her; we talked about the movies and the future of watching movies at home on TV where you can pick and choose. ‘But oh, don’t you think we will always want to go to the movies?’ she asked. We chatted, she drove off in her golf cart to her cabin, and passed away within the next 12 hours.”

In The Post actor Tom Hanks plays Ben Bradlee, the late Washington Post editor instrumental in the decision making process that ultimately led to publisher Katharine Graham’s decision to publish the Pentagon Papers, in the pages of the newspaper back in the early 1970s. In a recent guest column for the newspaper, Anna Bradlee, Ben Bradley’s granddaughter, says that her grandfather would have loved the coalition of Hollywood and Washington D.C. figures that made the film possible. Bradlee, after all, lived in close proximity to Hollywood names like Steven Spielberg and Nora Ephron. Anna Bradlee describes her grandfather as “no saint and no church mouse,” noting that “he was gruff — a teddy bear at heart, but intimidating — he didn’t kiss boo-boos or make sock puppets.” While she does say that the film doesn’t fully represent the many facets of her grandfather personality and working life, the moments that did resonate filled her with emotions. For instance, in a climatic scene, Bradlee phones Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham and says, “If we don’t publish [the Pentagon Papers] … We will lose ... The country will lose.” That felt true to who he was, Bradlee’s granddaughter Anna wrote. By coincidence Tom Hanks actually met Katharine Graham, just the day before she died in July 2001. The two had been attending an event in Sun Valley, Idaho and discovered found themselves sitting next to each other at lunch. Hanks remembers them having a wide-ranging discussion where they touched upon issues including movies and pop culture. Graham, who was then aged 84, was described as being “incredibly sharp, just filled with personality. Curious. Interested.” After their lunch was over, Graham said, “So long,” and drove away in a golf cart. Hours later, she passed away. Tom Hanks has taken many leading roles in a wide variety of Hollywood movies from straight roles, to comedic parts. Many of his films have stood the test of time and are now seen as iconic, often defining the era in which either the film was set or released. His film credits are wide and varied. In the late 1980s Hanks played Detective Scott Turner in the animal comedy Turner and Hooch. It was Turner’s job to befriend the dirty, smelly, drooling dog in order to help him solve a murder. From Forest Gump lines such as; “Life is like a box of chocolates ... you never know what you’re gonna get”

magazine

– lines from Tom Hanks’ 1994 film which sum up main character Forrest Gump’s extraordinary life. Hanks became a household name after this movie grossed $677 million worldwide and he won an Oscar. A year later in 1995 Hanks starred alongside Bill Paxton and Kevin Bacon in Apollo 13. Based on a true story of the controversial Flight Apollo 13 mission bound for the moon on a routine journey in the 1970s, the film skilfully recreates the tense atmosphere when things start to go badly and dangerously wrong. Arguably one of the most iconic of characters Hanks has played is Woody – the toy cowboy from the Toy Story series. Although we only hear the actor’s voice, it’s instantly recognisable and adds a familiar warmth to the film. Hanks starred in Steven Spielberg’s Second World War epic Saving Private Ryan in 1998. He was nominated for an Oscar for this one, but didn’t win, although Steven Spielberg did collect an award for best director. Another film which features on many peoples’ list of top five films is adapted from the Stephen King novel The Green Mile and sees Hanks take on the role of Paul Edgecomb, a prison guard working on death row in Louisiana. Edgecomb’s sense of the world is rocked when an eight feet tall inmate arrives with special powers. The phenomenal literary success of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code published in 2006, saw the book adapted into a film, where Hanks played professor Robert Langdon who unexpectedly finds himself in the middle of a murderous mystery that turns into a personal mission to protect the life of young woman and unravel secrets. All these varied roles prepared Hanks for his role in The Post, seeing him deliver a convincing performance of an editor under huge amounts of pressure from corrupt officials in the most powerful government in the world.

TOM HANKS Tom Hanks thinks deeply about this craft of acting and is often asked to talk to young actors about his work. On choosing roles such as Ben Bradlee in The Post, he says: “The odd lesson for that is, I figured out that’s how you end up making the favourable work you do.... Saying yes, then you just work. But saying no means you made the choice of the type of story you wanted to tell and the type of character you want to play”.

Steven Spielberg

THE DIRECTOR Released in late 2017, The Post is a tense political drama directed by one of Hollywood’s best known and financially successful directors, Steven Spielberg. The film is headlined by two Oscar winning actors Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, dramatises the Washington Post’s 1971 publication of the classified Pentagon Papers, which exposed government falsehoods about how the hugely controversial Vietnam War was presented to the American public. From the time Spielberg read the script and completing production of film took just nine months. Often it can take years to take a film from a script to the cinema but said, producer Kristie Macosko Krieger, when Spielberg read the script, he said, “If I can’t make it this year, I’m not making it.” Spielberg focuses the film deals on the human relationships that allowed huge decisions made by senior editorial executives leading up to the publication of the papers in the Post, following on from the work done by the New York Times who originally broke the story. As a director, Spielberg is exceptional in his ability to tell uncynical, everyman stories. As Richard Dreyfuss, the actor who starred in one of Spielberg many iconic movies, Jaws points out, “there’s a positivity surrounding much of his work. A “niceness” that encompasses the tone and the aesthetic. There’s also a grand sense of adventure, and doesn’t that always stand in for a theme of human achievement? Of human possibility?” US-based film expert Scott Beggs considers Spielberg’s work as seeking to understand the pragmatism and morality of advancement, but on a human level, Spielberg succeeds because he’s able to make jaws drop. Sometimes it’s because of human cruelty/kindness, a terrifying nightmare, or because a STEVEN SPIELBERG Speaking about the process of filmmaking, Spielberg says “When I was a kid, there was no collaboration, it’s you with a camera bossing your friends around. But as an adult, filmmaking is all about appreciating the talents of the people you surround yourself with and knowing you could never have made any of these films by yourself”. His fundamental success is owed to a lot of things, but principle among them is his childhood sense of wonder and magic – a sense he’s never relinquished.

68

huge valley is filled with living dinosaurs. Dropped jaws are at the heart of his filmmaking, and at the heart of that sensation is a spark of wonder that the younger versions of us understand better than we do. Spielberg stands hand in hand with his younger self, making magic, says Beggs. Spielberg’s Hollywood résumé includes filmmaker, director and producer, started his career in the late 1960s directing TV shows as one of the industry’s youngest television executives for Universal Studios. The highly praised television film, Duel (1972) brought him to the attention of Hollywood where he then directed long string of hits that have made him the most commercially successful director of all time. Born Steven Allan Spielberg on December 18, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio he is considered one of the founding pioneers of the New Hollywood era and one of the most popular directors and producers in film history. He is also one of the co-founders of DreamWorks Studios, a major producer of films and animations that was subsequently purchased by Paramount Pictures. Spielberg’s films have explored primeval fears, as in Jaws (1975), or expressed childlike wonder at the marvels of this world and beyond, as in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and E.T. (1982). He has also tackled literary adaptations, such as The Color Purple (1985) and Empire of the Sun (1987). And audiences around the world were riveted by the continuing adventures of his daredevil hero Indiana Jones in such films as Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). Imaginative fantasy is dominant in Spielberg’s Peter Pan-inspired Hook (1991), while J urassic Park (1993) and its sequel T he Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) rely on traditional action and monster-horror sequences. In choosing to make this film he was drawn to the contemporary relevance subject matter, which earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director and an Oscar nod for Best Picture. Along with delving into the issue of governmental cover-ups, The Post explores the treatment of women in the workplace. “I need a motivational purpose to make any movie,” Spielberg said. “When I read the first draft of the script, this wasn’t something that could wait three years or two years — this was a story I felt we needed to tell today.” Spielberg made the movie in just nine months.

Pentagon Papers The Post is multi-award nominated film was released in late 2017 and features a moment in time, when in 1971 the Washington Paper published a series of sensitive, secret papers compiled for a series of US governments. The papers are referred to are the Pentagon Papers, but an aggressive campaign by the administration of Richard Nixon calls the newspaper action treasonable and sets the press at loggerheads with a Republican White House. The Pentagon Papers were declassified in 2011 and released for the public.

For over five decades, filmmaker Steven Spielberg has made movies as diverse as Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind to Indiana Jones , The Color Purple, Empire of the Sun, Jurassic Park, to Schindler’s List and Munich. As a film director he’s been a prolific, skilled presence in Hollywood by confidently and creatively spanning genres, tones and subjects.

Meet us in Santanyi !

In May our newest office in Santanyi opened its doors. The building dates from 1769 . We restored the premises to its original glorious beauty... history can be lived again! You will find fine art by Eva Choung-Fux, a world renowned painter who kindly allowed for her work to add good energy to the office. We are very grateful - thank you, Eva! Waltraud Salpius, our director in Santanyi has a passion for real estate on the island and lives that passion, just as we all do at First Mallorca. Waltraud and her team can show you amazing fincas, close to the sea that you can smell the spray of the water, or high up
