Jim formed Leachman Cattle Co (LCC) back in the 70’s, breeding primarily Red Angus cattle. He, along with his family, promoted the red breed through their own sales, hitting the show road (very successfully) and through his own sale management company called the “Red Connection”.

Everywhere they exhibited, we all knew that when their red angus animal was in our class with the famous “hairpin” brand on it…we were fightin’ for 2nd!!

LCC had a bull called Stamina and even though he didn’t hit a ballot recently, he could be considered one of the greatest of all time. Not even Mulberry got to ride in an elevator to be at Leachman’s Banquet on the top floor of the Sheraton Hotel in Billings!

Oh, the stories we could tell of loading up and driving down to Billings in mid April…Let’s just say they are colorful. The Leachman Bull Sale at the “Bull Palace” 18 miles East of Billings was a gathering place of everyone who had even heard of the breed called Red Angus. Jim was the breeds true leader.

The Red Connection managed Red Round up several different times. In 1977, at the Red Angus Societies Annual meeting, a motion was made to move to an open herd policy and then secondly have Jim Leachman come and do on farm selections for the first time to ensure the quality being brought to town to sell in the sale.

From 1978 to 1985 Jim managed RRup and then was brought back again in 1991 to1993. I truly am looking forward to hearing Jim speak at our 50th anniversary Golden Banquet Celebration. Back in the day, when Jim had a microphone in his hand, how he could capture the room’s attention were absolutely the most incredible moments I’ve enjoyed ever in the cattle business. Be sure to RSVP for your Banquet tickets and take in all the grandeur the night of October 14th in the Cow Palace in Olds, Alberta has to offer.
