A Time for Remembering by Rev. Dr. Jerry W. Black, Associate Minister It’s Memorial Day weekend, and for most of us, it is a time for bratwurst, hamburgers, hotdogs, mustard, ketchup, relish, barbequed chicken, chips, and picnics. It’s about a long weekend, graduations, and perhaps a wedding or two. It’s about fun and relaxation.

But, Memorial Day is also about remembering—remembering the rich legacy of love and service left by those wondrous saints and family members who have preceded us; remembering God’s sacrificial and unconditional love for us; and remembering the sacrifice of men and women who have served our country militarily, especially those who have died in the course of that service. Such military remembrances do not mean that we condone or endorse acts of war. We don’t. Only the most

naïve, the most insensitive, and the most arrogant could possibly relish the human cost of solving differences through military conflict. Such actions are often unavoidable, but never preferred. So, we pause during this weekend to remember our legacy of love and the legacy of the fallen—their sacrifice and service. In the course of our remembering, may we include this thought from 1 John 5:5: “…this is the victory that conquers the world—our faith.”

We will meet in the chapel from 10-11:00 every Sunday morning from June 6 through August 15th. Rev. Our Parish Nurses are sponsoring a new way to exercise weekly and learn about other Disciples of Christ Churches and Seminaries as our exercise journey takes us across the country. It’s called Disciple-cise! Visit our bulletin board in Fellowship Hall to see all of the places we have been and where we will go. Remember 30 minutes of exercise equals 50 miles!

Stop #6– Washington, DC 300 miles / 180 minutes of exercise. Home of the National City Christian Church which is known as the “national cathedral” of the Disciples denomination. Did you know: 1843 - Seven people initiated a Disciples congregation in Washington, DC. They met in rented quarters. 1868 – Purchase was made of a small frame chapel for their first church building. 1977 – First female Deacons elected at National City Christian Church Lyndon Baines Johnson, the 36th President of the United States, occasionally attended National City Christian Church during his time as president and his state funeral was held here in 1973. However, his family had been staunchly Baptist and his wife, Lady Bird, was a devoted Episcopalian. James Garfield, the 20th President of the United States, was a member of National City Christian.
